Leeds: Phil Hay reveals Bielsa’s injury news ahead of Newcastle clash

The fixtures come thick and fast in December, and Leeds United will be pleased that they face a damaged Newcastle squad only five days after their 2-1 defeat to West Ham at Elland Road. Phil Hay has provided an injury update for supporters after hearing from Marcelo Bielsa.

The latest on Leeds

Hay tweeted from Bielsa’s pre-match press conference: “No new injury updates from Bielsa’s latest presser. He did say he’s going to refrain from naming his full team in public from now on, not because he thinks it’s wrong but because it became a talking point last week.”

Llorente still out

With players like Jamie Shackleton returning from injury, Bielsa only has four players missing, which is probably the fewest he has had since the club returned to the Premier League.

The bad news though is the fact that three of these injuries are to defenders, and with Leeds conceding the joint-second most goals in the division, no ‘new’ updates means no new additions, namely Diego Llorente, to the back four that struggled against West Ham.

Due to these injuries, the manager had to move Luke Ayling from the right-back position to centre-back against the Hammers. He actually picked up the best rating on the pitch (8.0), but the gaps in the defence were there for all to see and the Hammers really should have bagged more.

Ayling has also been a vital asset for the attacking game plan, and last month, the defender was in the top three Premier League defenders with the most passes into the final third this season.

So, Llorente in particular still being out is a big blow. Robin Koch is out long term, but Llorente is the one fans must be praying will return sooner rather than later.

Guillem Balague praised Llorente for his athleticism and ball-playing ability, calling him a ‘top player’ and saying he is ‘fantastic with long passing’, and the fact that he not only is he missing but that his absence will likely force Ayling into unfamiliar territory again, is a big loss for Bielsa.

Sunderland must be ruthless and axe George Dobson

At long last, we may actually watch Sunderland play some football on Saturday.

It has been a number of weeks now since the Black Cats last played due to a bout of Covid but the scene around the club is thankfully improving.

On the chalkboard

Sunderland put in a rather mixed display against Wimbledon last time out. Callum McFadzean gave away a first-half penalty which put the Mackems on the back foot.

Fortunately, Bailey Wright popped up with a second-half equaliser which saved Lee Johnson’s blushes.

It has been a frustrating period for the new boss whose chances of putting his stamp down on this side have been halted.

It’s likely that a number of changes will be made to the starting XI given their players have recovered from the illness that pillaged the squad and thus, George Dobson could be one of the names to miss out.

He played alongside Grant Leadbitter and Elliot Embleton in the middle of the park against Wimbledon but was withdrawn at the interval after barely making an impact. He won just two duels which led to a number of supporters mercilessly slating his display.

The solution

Well, the simple thing to do would be to axe him completely. Johnson needs to be ruthless in his early days as Sunderland boss and this would send a big message that he needs to improve.

Dobson has only started three league matches as it is this term and once Josh Scowen returns, he could be in a spot of bother.

The midfielder has had a tough time of it, producing just 0.4 tackles a match from the games he’s played in this campaign. For a defensive midfielder, it’s not an ideal tally.

But there’s more to Dobson’s game that isn’t up to scratch. The 23-year-old rarely plays on the front foot and struggles to provide a positive impetus. He let himself down with some poor touches and passes against Wimbledon and that cannot afford to happen again.

One possible solution could be to bring in Max Power providing he’s fit. He missed out last time but already has ten starts to his name in 2020/21. It feels like a no-brainer to drop Dobson and bring him in.

Johnson has to be brutal.

Everton: Fans laud Carlo Ancelotti’s update on James Rodriguez

Plenty of Everton fans have welcomed an update from Carlo Ancelotti on the fitness of James Rodriguez ahead of their game against Southampton on Sunday.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Italian said that the Colombia international trained today and may well be fit to play against the Saints.

This comes in contrast to Ancelotti saying that Rodriguez would not be available for the match, as it seems that the 29-year old may have made a miraculous recovery from the injury that he picked up from a tackle by Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk last weekend.

Indeed, Rodriguez may be a key player for the Toffees if they want to return to winning ways in the Premier League, given that the former Real Madrid star has scored three goals and supplied a further four assists in six games in all competitions so far in 2020/21 (Transfermarkt).

Everton fan reaction to Rodriguez update

These Everton supporters lauded the news on Rodriguez via Twitter, with one Toffees fan even branding the Colombian as a ‘sweet prince’:

Newcastle United: Federico Fernandez answers Lionel Messi question amid speculation that he will leave Barcelona

Newcastle United ace Federico Fernandez has answered a question asked by a fan of the Tyneside club regarding Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

As per his tweet, the central defender replied with “I will” to the question put forward to him on Twitter that was to “ask your mate if he likes bridges”, referring indeed to his Argentina teammate Messi.

The city is relatively famous for having seven specific bridges, and so the supporter is perhaps asking tongue-in-cheek as to whether Messi would consider moving to the North East.

This comes after the Barcelona striker amazingly handed in a transfer request to the Catalan giants which may well see him leave Spain to play somewhere else for the first time in his career.

Messi has no doubt been an incredible servant to the beautiful game, scoring a rather staggering 634 goals and adding a further 285 assists in a total of 731 matches in all competitions over 16 consecutive seasons, according to Transfermarkt.

Captain of his country as well, the 33-year old has also scored 70 goals in 138 appearances for Argentina since his senior international debut under coach Jose Nestor Pekerman (via Transfermarkt).

With a ridiculous plethora of titles to his name while playing for Barcelona, including six Ballon D’Or trophies (per Transfermarkt), it would be strange to see Messi in any other kit.

Unfortunately for the Toon Army, it is very unlikely that the Argentine will be seen in the famous black-and-white stripes given his extortionate £95m-a-year salary and £630m release clause.

Still, the Magpies may take some joy out of the response from Fernandez to the question about his fellow countryman.

Neil Custis hints possible date of Newcastle takeover announcement

Newcastle United’s takeover is all done and dusted, according to The Sun’s Neil Custis, who has also given a hint to when it could be officially announced.

The Premier League are thought to have given the green light over the £300m deal to take control of the northeast giants with the transferral of funds the final step.

There had been a delay to proceedings as the top-flight prioritised their ‘Project Restart’ plans but with teams returning to training this week, it appears as if they have now ratified the move at long last.

Custis wrote:

“SunSport understands the League’s owners and directors test found no barrier to the takeover.

“Financier [Amanda] Staveley, who is fronting the bid, is expecting official word next week.

“Then once the funds and paperwork are sorted an announcement will be made on or around June 1.”

There’s still another full working week before we enter June, which will be approximately two months after reports first emerged suggesting that tumultuous Toon owner Mike Ashley would finally sell up.

Custis claims that the announcement will be ‘made on or around June 1st’ which is also a Monday and start to a new week.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans celebrate eSports victory

The current lockdown means that football fans and clubs across the globe have plenty more time on their hands, and it is no different with Glasgow Rangers.

During this period, video games such as FIFA and Football Manager appear to have been put to good use. There have been a number of tournaments organised, like the Ultimate Quaranteam Cup, for example. The Gers have also been competing, most recently in the eScottish Cup, which was played on Football Manager Touch.

82 teams initially took part in the competition, but there could only be one winner – and it was the Ibrox outfit who took home the trophy. They beat their fierce rivals Celtic in the final 2-1 to do so.

Of course, this cannot replace the feeling of getting your hands on a real piece of silverware, but the club’s supporters seem happy all the less. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.
