Carberry expertly steers Hants chase

ScorecardMichael Carberry crunched 96 from 86 balls to steer Hampshire to the brink of their target•Getty Images

Michael Carberry struck a superb 96 as defending champions Hampshire eased to a five-wicket triumph over Durham at the Ageas Bowl to stay top of Group B in the Yorkshire Bank 40. Carberry was caught at the wicket off Mark Wood with one run needed but the damage had been done as Hampshire judged a run-chase perfectly to reach their target of 242 with five balls to spare.Durham had earlier made 241 for 8 with Ben Stokes and Will Smith leading a fightback following a poor start from the visitors with rapid fifties. Rain reduced the match to 36 overs each and Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams chose to bat first and was soon justified as Durham struggled to 45 for 4 in the 11th over.Dimitri Mascarenhas, making his first appearance of the season after returning from the IPL, removed Phil Mustard in his first over and left-arm pace bowler Chris Wood sent back Scott Borthwick and skipper Mark Stoneman. Paul Collingwood passed 10,000 List A runs after reaching 5 but added only one more before his stumps were shattered by David Griffiths.Only later in the innings did Durham show signs of recovery with Stokes and Smith each hitting half-centuries to help their side a respectable total. Stokes punished the Hampshire bowlers with an aggressive 87 off 71 balls in an innings that included six fours and four sixes before being stumped off Chris Wood.Smith and Ryan Pringle then put on 74 valuable runs for the seventh wicket before pace bowler Griffiths (3 for 42) returned to remove them both as Durham attempted a late acceleration. However, Durham’s score always looked vulnerable despite claiming the wicket of James Vince to the second ball of the Hampshire innings. High-scoring Vince, in fine form this season, was stumped by Mustard off Mark Wood but that brought together Carberry and Adams and the initiative swung back in Hampshire’s direction. The experienced second-wicket pair put on 133 in 18 overs before Adams slogged Borthwick to Wood at mid-wicket after making 67 from as many deliveries.George Bailey and Sean Ervine each helped Carberry keep pace with the run-rate so that with three overs left Hampshire required 28. It was then that Liam Dawson took control, smashing an unbeaten 37 off 21 balls with sixes off Chris Rushworth and Wood and four other boundaries.Carberry departed looking for the winning run and with a century in his sights but his 86-ball innings had been the key to Hampshire’s third victory in this season’s competition. England Lions batsman Carberry hit eight fours and two sixes with medium-pacer Mark Wood coming off worst with figures of 1 for 50 from five overs.

Smith presented with Test mace

It has been more than seven months but Graeme Smith still remembers the feel of the second new ball that nestled in his right hand late in the afternoon of August 20, at Lord’s.He remembers the way it moved off the seam after Vernon Philander released it, tempting Matt Prior. He remembers the way England’s valiant wicketkeeper moved towards it in an effort to drive. He remembers it taking the edge and then flying to him, low down. He remembers holding on. But most of all he remembers how important it was that he did.”That last over Vernon bowled, when Matt Prior nicked off, there had been a build-up of pressure up to that point and then it just broke. The last day was ebbing and flowing and then the next ball Steven Finn nicked off to Jacques [Kallis] and we were number one. That’s the emotional moment that sits with me,” Smith said in Johannesburg, where he received the ICC Test mace and a cheque for US$450,000 for him and his team.In fact, Smith has been holding the mace ever since South Africa took it off England. They travelled with it to Australia where they retained in even though, as Smith put it, “we could have so easily lost touch of something we worked so hard for,” and kept it through home series against New Zealand and Pakistan. The difference now is that South Africa are in possession of it at the ICC’s cut-off date for the first time.Vince van der Bijl, who handed over the prize, recalled that every year since 2009, South Africa have finished in second place. There’s no better way to explain how often they have been nearly men than that. For the Test side, that has changed.South Africa are undefeated in 15 Tests dating back to December 2011 and have not lost a series in four years. They won all five of their home Tests this summer to open the gap between themselves and the nearest challenger, England, to 14 points. Moreover, van der Bijl pointed out that the total number of points South Africa have accumulated to reach No. 1, 128, is significantly more than India, England (both 118) or Australia (110) had when they received the mace in previous years.”We feel that we belong in this place,” Smith said. “It feels more natural than we had it before. We’ve earned our right to be there and every player wants to achieve more.” South Africa’s desire seems to set them apart and has played an important role in their current dominance, which is so overwhelming that if the planned Test Championship had taken place this year, they would have been favourites to win it.Its postponement to 2017 has disappointed many, including Smith, but he hopes the team can maintain their good run to come into contention for it in the future. “It’s important we don’t take for granted what we have achieved,” Smith said. “There is a lot more that is out there for us. Our first challenge is in October against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. If we can win there, that will be another big stepping stone for us.”The Test Championship is still a fair distance away and there is enough ahead of us that we would like to achieve. But if we could get there still as the best team in the world, that would be great. We wish the Test Championship was sooner but it gives us an opportunity to build an even stronger team and we have the opportunity to lead the way next season. We have something special at the moment. Maybe we can talk about legacies in a few years’ time.”The country’s sports minister, Fikile Mbalula, who was also present at the mace ceremony, believes the building of that dynasty has already begun. “This is history, not in the making, and it something that will be celebrated by generations to come. It is irreversible, it is championship material,” he said.”You have brought hope in the sport of cricket, you have brought hope to the people of South Africa … We are very proud of you. I have seen you coming back fighting and I have seen that resilience and I hope you can keep that going into the future.”Like many, he thinks the trophy cabinet will only be complete once they triumph in a 50-over tournament. “The only thing we are short of now is the World Cup,” Mbalula said. “But it shows in our performance that we are preparing a team that will not choke at the next event but that will stand the test of time.”While the World Cup is held in high-esteem, the importance of Test cricket has been propped up recently. Van der Bijl pointed to the ICC’s increasing of the prize money for No. 1 from US$175,000 to US$450,000 this year and Smith talked about the growing interest in the longer format that he has noticed at home.”The success we’ve had as a team has impacted on our fans. We can see that in the stadiums and the support,” he said, declaring the longest format in good health. “There is a core group of teams that are close in their own conditions, like India are very good at home and New Zealand have shown they are tough in their own conditions.”It’s exciting that you know sport is unpredictable, although we want to be as predictable as possible in that we want to keep winning. But it’s great there is so much interest and that Test cricket has gone from strength to strength.”

Dayal trumps CSK in last over again to take RCB to the top

Dayal did it against Dhoni, Jadeja and Dube with a dew-slicked ball on a flat pitch

Deivarayan Muthu03-May-20253:10

Is this CSK’s worst-ever IPL season?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) outgunned Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chinnaswamy, defending 213 on a flat pitch in a wildly see-sawing classic. It came down to Yash Dayal vs MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja once again. In 2024, the left-arm seamer had bested Dhoni and put RCB in the playoffs. A year on, he denied Dhoni and CSK once again, defending 14 off the last over with a dew-slicked ball. Dayal this time put RCB on top of the IPL 2025 points table, with 16 points, and a step closer to the playoffs.Related

Dayal, Suyash get the job done for RCB

CSK were left needing 35 off the last three overs with Jadeja, who was batting with attacking intent that was missing earlier in the season, and Dhoni in the middle. It was anybody’s game, but Suyash Sharma tipped it RCB’s way with an 18th over that went for only six runs.It then swung CSK’s way when Virat Kohli dropped a regulation catch – of Jadeja – at long-on and saw the first ball of the 19th over go through him to the boundary. Dhoni then scythed a legcutter from Bhuvneshwar Kumar over cover for six, and followed with a single to make it 15 required off the last over.Dayal’s plan in the final over was to shut Dhoni and Jadeja down with yorkers. With dew around, he was not able to nail his yorkers, but his low full tosses were still hard to put away, leading two singles and Dhoni’s wicket off the third ball. His fourth full toss in a row ended up going over Shivam Dube’s waist and well beyond the midwicket boundary for six, but Dayal didn’t veer away from his original plan when CSK needed six off three with a free hit in hand. With five needed off two, Dayal bowled a near yorker and Jadeja could only inside-edge it onto his pad for a single. Dube couldn’t get the last ball away to the boundary as Dayal pulled off another heist at the Chinnaswamy, sending the crowd into raptures.

The Bethell and Kohli opening act

1:37

Chawla: Bethell’s batting reflects RCB’s own good form

Jacob Bethell and Kohli had laid the base for RCB’s win by adding 71 for 0, their highest powerplay score at home this season. Romario Shepherd then launched from there, muscling a 14-ball half-century, the joint second-fastest in IPL history.Bethell might not have even played had Phil Salt recovered from an illness, which had kept him out of RCB’s previous game as well. Bethell dashed out of the blocks on Saturday, picking off Khaleel Ahmed for three successive fours in the opening over. He went on to score three more fours and two sixes in the powerplay. He was the first to bring up his fifty, off 28 balls, in his second IPL innings after getting a life on 27 when Matheesha Pathirana collided with Jadeja, grassing the catch. After having recovered from that blow, Pathirana had Bethell holing out for 55, with Dewald Brevis pulling off a screamer at deep square leg.As for Kohli, he went onto raise his own fifty off 29 balls. It was his seventh half-century in 11 innings this season. He looked good for a whole lot more until Sam Curran had him popping a catch to point with a slower bouncer for 62 off 33 balls.

Shepherd’s final act

1:12

Chawla: Very less margin for error against Shepherd

Shepherd, who was picked ahead of Liam Livingstone once again, walked out to bat when RCB were 157 for 5 with 14 balls left in the innings. After the big opening stand, they ran out of gas in the middle – between overs 11 and 18 they had managed only 45 runs for four wickets.Shepherd then helped RCB plunder 54 off the last two overs, the most scored off the 19th and 20th overs in an IPL innings. In the 19th over, he smoked Khaleel for four sixes and two fours which cost CSK 33 runs. In the next over, he took Pathirana for two fours and two sixes to give RCB a blockbuster finish.Fittingly, Shepherd stormed to his fifty by launching a six into the top tier off the final ball of the innings.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mhatre, Jadeja lead CSK’s chase

The joy, however, was short-lived for RCB as Ayush Mhatre dominated the powerplay in the chase. He claimed 39 of the 58 runs CSK scored in the first six, including a sequence of 4, 4, 4, 6,4, 4 in a 26-run over bowled by Bhuvneshwar. The pick of the sequence was a dabbed four between point and short third.Krunal Pandya snared Shaik Rasheed for 14 and Lungi Ngidi, who got a game in place of Josh Hazlewood, dragged CSK back further when he had No. 3 Sam Curran top-edging a catch to the keeper for a run-a-ball 5.Mhatre, 17, CSK’s youngest-ever player, then combined with Jadeja for a rollicking 114-run partnership off 64 balls. The stand ended when Ngidi tricked Mhatre with a slower ball, denying him the chance to become the second-youngest centurion in the IPL after his India Under-19 opening partner Vaibhav Suryavanshi. He was dismissed for 94 off 48 balls.Jadeja continued to bat with a refreshingly positive approach, especially against spin. He faced just one dot ball out of 16 balls from Krunal and Suyash.Brevis, though, was dismissed in a slightly contentious fashion. He was given out lbw but the ball was projected to slide down the leg side. The umpire’s finger had gone up midway through Brevis and Jadeja crossing over for an attempted leg-bye. The two batters then decided to talk it out and by the time Brevis had called for a review, the 15-second time limit had elapsed. In the end, CSK were left with another case of what might have been.

Somerset sign Kevin O'Brien for Twenty20s

Ireland allrounder Kevin O’Brien has been signed by Somerset to play five Friends Life t20 matches, the first of which is against Warwickshire on June 13. The county’s other overseas players are South Africa’s Richard Levi and Albie Morkel.”Kevin is a very attractive batsman who can score his runs very quickly and will add to our already exciting batting line up,” Somerset’s director of cricket, Brian Rose, said.O’Brien, who scored the fastest World Cup hundred against England in Bangalore in 2011, represented Gloucestershire in the Twenty20 competition last year and scored a 44-ball century – the fastest in English cricket. He has scored 807 runs and taken 28 wickets in 56 Twenty20 matches so far.Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, supported the signing. “This is another great opportunity for Kevin to improve his knowledge and skills in the Twenty20 format, which will no doubt help improve him further as a player and help prepare him for the upcoming Twenty20 internationals against Bangladesh in July and South Africa A in August, which all build up to the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka this September.”

Ervine still invaluable for Hampshire

Sean Ervine played argubly his most valuable innings for Hampshire when the support of last man David Balcombe enabled him to reach an unbeaten century on a green pitch against Glamorgan at West End.

Ivo Tennant23-May-2012
ScorecardSean Ervine played one of his most invaluable innings for Hampshire with an unbeaten hundred on a West End greentop•PA PhotosA little over a year ago, Sean Ervine thought hard about giving upcounty cricket to concentrate on playing for his native Zimbabwe inwhatever form of the game he could still participate. There was, though, something about the lure of Hampshire cricket – as well as the lure of becoming anEnglishman – that led him to stay put. It is just as well for Hampshire’ssake that he did, for his innings against Glamorgan was perhaps themost valuable he has played. On a green pitch which was indistinguishable from the rest of thesquare at the start of play, Hampshire, asked to bat, slumped to 97for 5 and then 204 for 8t. Ervine was dropped without scoring byMark Wallace, a low, difficult chance, and then on 76, a quitecatchable opportunity at long on. He relied on eye, instinct and goodtiming in making an unbeaten 109, his first century of the season.Ervine was also reliant on support from David Balcombe, who is too good to be goingin last. Together they put on 85 from 86 balls for the last wicket:entertaining hitting against an attack shorn of its three best seamersand which, until then, had performed perfectly respectably. Ratherthan defend in textbook manner and sooner or later be beaten by theconditions as much as the bowling, this pair simply looked to hit theball – hard.So a total of 316 could well be a pretty useful one. For this does notlook to be a four-day pitch. John Glover took the new ball forGlamorgan and moved it sufficiently off the seam to have Liam Dawsonleg before and Michael Carberry and James Vince taken by Mark Wallace.Simon Katich was his customary adhesive self, compiling 36 beforeplaying slightly across the line at Will Owen as if batting on theharder pitches of his homeland down under.Jimmy Adams and Michael Bates, by contrast, played straight andwatchfully. Or at least they did until the former played on to Owenand the wicketkeeper, who was in form and was driving particularlywell, was bowled by Jim Allenby. When Owen removed Chris Wood andKabir Ali with successive balls, Hampshire were 204 for 8. Onlythere was still Balcombe to come. His highest previous championship score was just 30, but he can bat.Or he looks as if he can bat. Ervine reached his century with a six overlong on off Allenby, having made his previous best score this season,75, against Glamorgan. His clean hitting emphasised why RodBransgrove, the Hampshire chairman, believes him to be a good enoughcricketer to represent England, as he has just become qualified to do.Had James Harris, Huw Waters and Graham Wagg been playing, thelikelihood is that Hampshire would not have reached 300. Even so,Wallace had little option but to bowl first when he inspected thepitch. Until the umpires appeared to have their own examination, andwhile the groundstaff were in their hutch at square leg, it really wasimpossible to tell where the match would take place. Still, this madefor an interesting day. And there is pace in the pitch.Glamorgan’s openers, the cerebral Gareth Rees, and Nick James, whoreplaced Stewart Walters, survived the seven overs they had to face ona sultry evening. Their side has mustered just one batting bonus pointthus far this season, an embarrassing statistic which provides justthe incentive they need to make some runs now.

India 'break quicker than anyone' – Haddin

Australia’s vice-captain, Brad Haddin, believes India “break quicker than anyone in the world” when the run of play is against them

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jan-2012Australia’s vice-captain, Brad Haddin, believes India “break quicker than anyone in the world” when the run of play is against them. Despite having had a difficult series himself, including dropping two catches, Haddin has turned up the heat on India ahead of the third Test in Perth, describing MS Dhoni’s men as being “as fragile as any team in the world”.Speaking on Sydney radio ahead of the Australian team convening in Perth, Haddin said the side had discussed keeping India in the field for as long as possible during Australia’s long first innings at the SCG. As it turned out, Michael Clarke made a triple-century while Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey both scored hundreds, and Australia took a 2-0 series lead.”We spoke about a bit of that when we were batting,” Haddin said on Sky Sports Radio Australia. “The longer we could keep them out on the field the bigger chance we had of breaking them.”We know this side can be as fragile as any team in the world if things aren’t going their way and they can turn on each other and the media turns on them pretty quick. We knew if we could keep them out there and put the numbers like we did on the board we knew we’d get the rewards because they break quicker than anyone in the world.”In their second innings, India made 400 but still fell 68 runs short of making Australia bat a second time. Sachin Tendulkar was one of India’s stronger performers with 80 and although he has been the visitors’ leading run scorer during the series, Haddin said the Australians felt they had discovered a way to keep him relatively quiet.”What we have found is if we can build enough pressure on him he wants to score and he wants to feel bat on ball and he wants to get into a rhythm,” Haddin said. “We find if we can push him a little wider, make him feel for the ball a bit we can build enough pressure to get a chance and it’s worked in the last two Tests.”We’ve found he can be a bit uncomfortable in the areas [Peter] Siddle’s been bowling to him. l knew if we could build enough pressure we can create a chance to get him. He’s a great player and it’s always a privilege to play against guys like this. There’s been a lot of talk about his hundredth hundred but from our point of view it’s our job to make sure he doesn’t get it this series.”The Australians arrived in Perth on Monday and were set to begin training on Tuesday. The third Test begins at the WACA on Friday.
