Glasgow Rangers ace Ianis Hagi was Gerrard’s unsung hero against St. Johnstone

Ianis Hagi was Steven Gerrard’s unsung hero as Glasgow Rangers ran riot over St. Johnstone at McDiarmid Park to maintain their 16-point lead over Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night.

Gerrard’s side largely dominated proceedings from start to finish to fuel their title ambitions, with goals from Hagi, Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe proving to be more than enough to beat the Saints before Christmas.

Roofe struck first after he capitalised on a mistake from Saints goalkeeper Zander Clark before Glen Kamara doubled their advantage before the break.

However, Hagi saved the best till last after he blasted a shot straight at Zander Clark after Roofe’s initial shot had been blocked for the ball to bounce between the keeper’s legs and over the line.

Hagi, who reportedly earns £23,000-a-week, has often been criticised for much of the season so far but he was brimming with confidence on the right wing, having started in the midfield as an advanced playmaker in the 4-0 win over Falkirk in the Betfred Scottish League Cup.

You could single out several players for their near-perfect performances, namely Borna Barisic, Roofe and James Tavernier, but the young Romania international was arguably a class above the rest of his teammates as Rangers romped to a 3-0 victory over Callum Davidson’s side, as he took two shots on target – more than any other player from either side – while completing 17 out of his 21 passes (81%), as per SofaScore.

There’s no doubt Gerrard will have been delighted with the right winger’s work rate, as he won seven of his 13 ground duels (53%), successfully completed his only dribble attempt of the game, and was fouled six times, which was also a game-high statistic.

The Ibrox boss heaped praise on his young charge in the post-match press conference after he handed him his first start after he left a positive impression following his brief cameo against Motherwell.

Gerrard said: “It took us probably a quarter of an hour to unleash a good shot.

“To be fair to Ianis, he comes into the team and one thing he will do for us is take shots on, he doesn’t mind taking a risk in his passing or shooting – I like that, and we got our rewards for it.

“He was excellent against Motherwell, he came on and helped us change the game.

“Again, it was a strong performance from him. I thought he tired a little bit at the end, I’ll have to monitor that in the coming days.

“He got a little bit leggy in the final minutes, but it’s understandable as it was a tough night and he put a shift in so fair play to him.”

While Roofe will rightly receive much of the acclaim having opened the scoring after he bagged a brace at the weekend, Hagi was Gerrard’s real hero.

Hodgson must convince Patrick van Aanholt to stay as Crystal Palace contract talks face collapse

Wilfried Zaha once again faces questions about his future at Selhurst Park, Roy Hodgson seemingly has no plans to retire anytime soon, so many senior players are out of contract in the summer – it’s shaping up to be an interesting season at Crystal Palace.

Next year, let alone next season, still seems some way off for the Eagles, who travel to Turf Moor to take on Burnley on Monday night, before facing Newcastle United at home in the same week.

Palace have made a promising start to the season, beating Southampton, Manchester United and Fulham so far this season, although they suffered back-to-back defeats to Everton and Chelsea, as well as Wolves, whilst a dull draw with Brighton in the A23 derby did little to brighten the mood.

But Hodgson’s side bounced back by battering Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United in a 4-1 win at home before the international break which means they are already 10 points clear of the relegation zone. However, Hodgson will still have his work cut out, if recent reports are to be believed.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, Palace chairman Steve Parish is currently holding contract talks with Patrick van Aanholt, but these are in danger of imminently collapsing at any moment.

It’s claimed that talks between the two sides have stalled as it looks increasingly likely the left-back will leave the club as a free agent when his contract runs out in the summer, amid interest from an unnamed elite club who are keen to tie him down to a pre-contract agreement in January.

Although Tyrick Mitchell has become a first-team regular starter in recent weeks, Hodgson must convince Van Aanholt to stay at Selhurst Park before it’s too late.

Mentoring can mould Mitchell

There will always be a debate over when it would be the best time to let a senior player leave for pastures news. Palace have been more guilty than most clubs of clinging on to bygone relics from the past for far too long as Christian Benteke arguably should have been sold years ago, but Mitchell can benefit massively by learning from a player who has been there and done it at a decent level of the game.

Van Aanholt, who is currently valued at £7.2m via Transfermarkt, could prove to be an important mentor to the 21-year-old as he has vast levels of Premier League experience, especially when you consider the fact that he won the title during his time at Chelsea. He began his professional career at the Blues but spent several loan spells away from Stamford Bridge before being sold to Sunderland.

Once hailed as a “brilliant” beast by former Premier League striker Alan Shearer, the 30-year-old has scored 14 goals and supplied 5 assists in over 100 games for the Eagles in all competitions.

In 29 appearances in the Premier League season, the Netherlands international bagged three goals and two assists, whilst he made 1.5 tackles, 1.5 clearances and 1.6 interceptions per game, via WhoScored. Whether or not Mitchell will be able to match these statistics remains to be seen but he is on the right track so far, as he is averaging 4 tackles per game in the Premier League so far this season, as per WhoScored.

Given his age, the Palace academy graduate cannot be expected to shoulder the burden alone on the left flank, that’s for sure. Swallow your pride Parish, and get it done, Eagles.

Zungu beware: Glasgow Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield sends Steven Gerrard timely reminder

Glasgow Rangers ran riot over Aberdeen in a 4-0 rout at Ibrox to take an eleven-point lead over their arch rivals Celtic at the Scottish Premiership summit.

Steven Gerrard’s side took the lead by way of a long-range strike from Ryan Kent, which was followed by a well-timed finish from Kemar Roofe, before Scott Arfield’s shot took a deflection off Shay Logan and James Tavernier struck the final blow.

The Ibrox boss handed Bongani Zungu his first-team debut in the second half of the 8-0 victory over Hamilton Academical and he had been in contention to start against Aberdeen until the 28-year-old suffered a knee injury whilst away on international duty with South Africa.

In his absence, Arfield was once again an integral part of Gerrard’s side as Rangers routed the Dons at home to secure their 18th win and 17th clean sheet in all competitions so far this season.

SofaScore awarded the 32-year-old with a high statistical score of 7.7 for his performance – he made one tackle and one clearance, whilst he made three key passes, completed 76 out of 89 passes (85%), took one shot on target and had two shots blocked.

Arfield also took a staggering 105 touches of the ball whilst he was an influential part of the Gers side as he provided one goal and set up another which shows that his hard work paid off.

Gerrard clearly rates the Canadian very highly indeed, once calling the powerhouse the “perfect professional” and adding that he is an important figure in the dressing room after a string of fine performances last season.

In 116 games for the Gers, the centre-midfielder has scored 26 goals and supplied 17 assists in all competitions, whilst he is the club’s third-highest top scorer in the Premiership this season behind the likes of Tavernier, who has scored nine so far this season, as well as Kent and Roofe (who are tied on five goals apiece).

By comparison, Zungu has failed to find the back of the net so far for the Light Blues, although admittedly it is still early days yet.

Rangers are enjoying a 21-game unbeaten streak, with the win their 13th of 15 league games, which is their best start to the season for over fifty years.

However, Celtic have two games in hand and are four points clear of the third-placed Dons in the Premiership. If the Gers are to regain the coveted trophy for the first time in almost ten years, we suspect that Arfield will still have a part to play in spite of Zungu’s arrival in the summer. One thing’s for sure, his influence cannot and should not go unnoticed.

One-time Pochettino target Wilfried Zaha is one that got away for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on plenty of big names over the last few names, most notably Paulo Dybala and Jack Grealish, but one former Mauricio Pochettino target has just shown why the north Londoners must rue not clinching his signature…

What was the word?

During the 2016 summer transfer window, Spurs lodged a £12m bid for Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha but it was quickly rebuffed by Steve Parish, who dubbed the offer “ridiculous” to talkSPORT, via the Guardian.

It’s not the first time that the Lilywhites have had to opportunity to secure the enigmatic forward after ex-Spurs scout David Webb spotted Zaham, aged just ten, playing for Whitehorse Wanderers in west Croydon.

“I think he scored four or five goals. We invited him in for a six-week trial and for the first five he didn’t play. The coach couldn’t get him to do the sessions properly because he wasn’t used to it. He’s not going to come in and pick up structured training sessions at 10. He won’t understand. What he understands is being on a football pitch. He played against Tottenham’s academy and scored all six goals.”

And then again in 2018, Zaha was hoping that a move to N17 would come to fruition but Spurs balked at the Eagles’ £70m asking price, as per The Times.

One that got away?

During a weekend in which Spurs did not feature – they play Burnley tomorrow night instead – Zaha excelled as Palace’s star man against Fulham, playing a part in both goals in their 2-1 victory.

The 27-year-old slipped in Jairo Riedewald with a sublime through ball within the first eight minutes for the opener before tapping home the easiest of finishes courtesy of Michy Batshuayi picking him out.

Per SofaScore, Zaha duly took home a match-high rating of 8.8 after recording seven dribbles, four key passes and an 82% passing accuracy from 22 attempts.

After the match, Roy Hodgson lauded his talisman, he said: “He reminds us that when he’s on top of his game he’s a very hard player to stop. He’s an excellent player and that’s what he’s capable of doing. He deserves all the praise he’s going to get.”

Back in 2016, Parish revealed that Pochettino thought the Ivorian international could be the “next [Cristiano] Ronaldo” – speaking to talkSPORT, via the Guardian, he added: “I was told that the manager there [at Tottenham] thinks he’s the next Ronaldo. Well, I’d like to get the next Ronaldo for £12m.”

It remains to be seen how much it would’ve taken to snag him from their London rivals, but with his value shooting up to £70m as recently as the 2019 summer window, Daniel Levy must rue not pulling out all the stops to land him, especially in a time before the arrivals of Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and obviously, Gareth Bale.

Zaha has bagged five goals in six league games already this season, averaging 2.5 shots, 1.7 dribbles and 1.5 key passes per game, via WhoScored, could you imagine his one goal every 108 minutes ratio in this current Spurs team? He’d be electrifying.

He could’ve left the Eagles for £30m in the window just gone, so there’s surely no chance of picking him up that cheap again now.

Levy should have listened to Pochettino instead of wearing his usual tough-negotiator hat. To miss out on the “next Ronaldo” is simply inexcusable.

Memorial Stadium

Key information about Memorial Stadium

Memorial Stadium was built in 1921 and now houses League One’s Bristol Rovers. The ground is located in an area in Bristol that was known as Buffalo Bill’s Field and is actually more commonly referred to as Memorial Ground.

Its maximum capacity stands at 12,300 along with a pitch that measures 101m by 68m. The surface of the field is covered with grass and it has no running track surrounding it.

The record attendance of 12,011 supporters at Memorial Stadium was set for Bristol Rovers’ clash against West Bromwich Albion on 9 March 2008.

A history of Memorial Stadium

The site on which the ground now lies was actually created way back in 1891 on an area of land more commonly known as Buffalo Bill’s Field, after Colonel William “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West Show that took place there. That was also when some of the first games were played on the site.

But it actually wouldn’t be until 1921 and after World War I that Buffalo Bill’s Field was bought by Sir Francis Nicholas Cowlin, who was the sheriff of Bristol, and given to Bristol Rugby Club. The name Memorial Stadium – or rather, Memorial Ground as it was known back then – was chosen as tribute to local rugby union players who lost their lives in the war.

Sports fixtures were held at the ground since the early days and it managed to attract the crowds regularly despite having only one wooden stand and terraces installed. Of course, it would also improve significantly over the years as they demolished the old features and added the new and more modern ones by 1995. But football wasn’t really a regular occurrence at Memorial Stadium until 1996 when Bristol Rovers finally moved in.

The club entered into joint ownership through the Memorial Stadium Company, even taking the majority of shareholding due to the rugby team’s difficult financial situation. In fact, following Bristol Bears’ relegation two years later, Bristol Rovers were able to buy their share of the ground for a nominal fee, making the previous owners tenants in their own home.

After the new millennium, Memorial Stadium was further redeveloped with the addition of a roof to the Clubhouse Terrace and temporary stands at the south and south-west, which also boosted their maximum capacity as well. In 2014, the rugby club would finally move out of the ground and leave Bristol Rovers as sole residents.

Recent years have been extremely turbulent when it comes to redevelopment plans of the ground. Initially, they wanted to expand Memorial Stadium but after years of delays and issues, they decided to move to the newly proposed UWE Stadium instead of that. But, ultimately that failed as well and after the arrival of their new owners, the focus has shifted towards improving their current home once again.

Tickets to watch Bristol Rovers at Memorial Stadium

All tickets to watch Bristol Rovers play at Memorial Stadium can be found and purchased on the club’s official website. The price, of course, will vary depending on the stand chosen and the age group of the buyer but an adult ticket can be bought for a cost between £12 and £19.

The club also offers a season ticket scheme for their most loyal fans and more information can be found on the aforementioned website.

Newcastle fans fuming with Danny Rose after Watford showing

Newcastle had an afternoon to forget on Saturday as they lost 2-1 to Watford via two Troy Deeney penalties.

The Magpies’ performance was summed up by a litany of individual errors, notably from Javier Manquillo and Matt Ritchie who gave away the spot-kicks, but there was another player on the pitch who was arguably just as bad.

Indeed, Danny Rose had an absolute stinker against the Hornets, picking up a 6.14 rating from WhoScored for a performance that saw him make just one tackle, with no interceptions, clearances or key passes.

Watch Newcastle United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Rose’s game got off to a poor start. He was chastised early on by his captain for failing to clear a ball when the team were in danger, and due to the lack of a crowd, every viewer could hear exactly what Jamaal Lascelles thought of the full-back’s error.

It wasn’t just the centre-back who had a few choice words for Rose as a number of fans took to social media to voice their complaints with the Tottenham loanee’s performance.

The defender may only have a few games left as a Newcastle player due to his loan deal being up at the end of the season.

Of course, as with many loan deals, rumours have circulated that Steve Bruce’s side are looking into the possibility of signing him permanently, but after this performance, many United fans don’t want to see him back beyond the end of the season, and you can’t blame them for having that point of view after Saturday’s poor showing.

Manchester United: Red Devils consider four Jadon Sancho alternatives

Manchester United always knew that signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund was never going to be an easy task.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintains that Sancho remains his top target this summer, the Red Devils have drafted a list of alternatives should they fail in their attempts to bring him to Old Trafford.

Dortmund director Michael Zorc’s recent comments will not have gone down well with Ed Woodward and Matt Judge.

Man United are firmly focused on signing Sancho but the Bundesliga outfit have insisted the 11-cap England international is staying at the Signal Iduna Park for at least another season.

According to The Manchester Evening News, United are considering Kingsley Coman, Rabbi Matondo and Thiago Almada, while ESPN revealed Barcelona flop Ousmane Dembele is also on the shortlist.

Whether or not this is simply part of the poker game, only time will tell, but it is telling that the Red Devils are ready to look at other options.

Dembele seems to be the odd one out as the 23-year-old has not managed to play a competitive game all year.

He has struggled for consistency since his £135m move from the Bundesliga to La Liga because his career has been plagued by persistent injuries.

Spanish newspaper Sport insists Barca will allow him to leave on loan as long as there is a mandatory option to buy included in the deal. However, the Red Devils harbour concerns over his injury history and view the Frenchman as a risky investment.

Meanwhile, United continue to be linked to Coman, Matondo and Almada as well.

Coman has incredibly won a league title in each of his seasons as a professional footballer so far, which sets him apart from the rest of his rivals.

Despite his young age, the 24-year-old has already played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, which makes him a valuable backup option if the board are unable to sign Sancho in the summer.

It is understood that Matondo is viewed in the same bracket as his Welsh teammate Daniel James, and although he would be a much cheaper option than the Englishman, he would not be expected to start every game on the right wing.

While he would make a great addition to cope with the congestion of fixtures United will have to deal with next season, he doesn’t have the experience behind him to push for a place in the starting lineup.

Velez Sarsfeld forward Thiago Almada faces the same issues as his Schalke counterpart.

With that being said, this could simply be a ploy by the board to break the deadlock with Dortmund.

The Sancho saga has shown no signs of going away anytime soon, so there are bound to be plenty of twists and turns in the tale still to come.

United fans, do you think Ed Woodward will sign Sancho this summer? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Tottenham Hotspur: Noel Whelan slams ‘wasteful’ Spurs duo as news emerges

Tottenham Hotspur continued their newfound momentum by beating Newcastle United 3-1 at St James’ Park.

Harry Kane’s two strikes took his tally to 201 goals in 350 games, with the majority of those for Tottenham (BBC).

Spurs are now enjoying an unbeaten run stretching back to the 1-0 win at home to Everton. Nevertheless, Noel Whelan has blasted full-backs Serge Aurier and Ben Davies for their “wasteful” performances on the wings.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker ripped into the defensive duo, suggesting Spurs are “missing a goalscoring opportunity without having that quality.”

Aurier and Davies have established themselves as Jose Mourinho’s first choice full-backs as they have started every game since the Premier League restart, winning four out of a possible seven games so far.

Son Heung-min opened the scoring before Kane added the extras to mark the first time Mourinho had won a Premier League game at St James’ Park.

The Ivorian’s scuffed clearance allowed Matt Ritchie to bury an equaliser, but Kane combined with Steven Bergwijn to keep Newcastle quiet.

Whelan told assistant editor Russell Edge “when you get into areas out wide where you’ve got a striker like that who’s fantastic in the air and can score all kinds of goals in the box, I think me as a striker would be tearing my hair out.

“We see it at Leeds at times, all that hard work and great work at times getting into the final third but with a wasteful ball. You’re missing a goalscoring opportunity without having that quality.

“That is somewhere that Tottenham are lacking – Aurier to me is not their solution.”

With all due respect, it seems Whelan has gone too far this time. Aurier started just two days after his younger brother Christopher was shot dead in Toulouse.

Although the 27-year-old was at fault for the error that led to Newcastle’s equaliser, he still made 3 clearances, completed 4 tackles, and finished the game with a pass accuracy rating of 85% (via SofaScore).

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain ace has played 31 games in the Premier League this season, scoring one goal, supplying five assists, making 1.1 key passes per game, averaging 2.8 tackles, and registering 2.6 clearances on average (stats provided by WhoScored).

Mourinho had been considering Gedson Fernandes, Oliver Skipp and Moussa Sissoko as possible alternatives in the event that Aurier could not play, but with so much at stake, the Ivory Coast captain showed he is a team player who is committed to the cause.

It might not have been his best performance of the season, but he still managed to play the full 90 minutes.

As a result, Spurs are now seventh in the table, a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, with only two games remaining.

With everything he has been through in the past week, the fact he even played against the Magpies shows real courage and determination.

Tottenham fans, has Serge Aurier gone up in your estimation for playing this week? Let us know down below!
