Rangers had a howler over Malcolm Ebiowei

It’s no secret to say that Rangers have had some howlers in the transfer market over the previous few years, from signing players who haven’t quite made the grade at the club, to letting young talents go for peanuts who have gone on to thrive elsewhere.

The newest member of the latter club is Malcolm Ebiowei, who Rangers let go for absolutely nothing in the summer of 2021.

The 18-year-old joined Rangers from Arsenal in 2020, stating that he was “delighted” to join the Glasgow club and making clear his desire to work with then-manager Steven Gerrard.

It didn’t work out for him at Ibrox but he has exploded into life since his move to Derby last year, featuring for the Rams in 15 English Championship matches and scoring once, although the team were recently relegated to League One.

Working under Wayne Rooney seems to have brought out the best in the teenage forward and it looks like he has a bright future in the game, especially following his recent performances.

His average rating of 6.89 on WhoScored is the third highest in the Derby squad, not bad considering that Curtis Davies, who is deemed their top performer, has played three times as many matches.

Derby coach Justin Walker stated that the youngster “gets people out of their seats” following a solid performance against Bristol City last month, and this is high praise for Ebiowei.

It looks like Rangers have made a big mistake in letting him Ibrox and this could come back to haunt them in a similar vein to Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour, who left the Light Blues for a cut-price fee in 2017 and has since gone on to excel at a high level.

There are some fantastic prospects in the Gers academy, but letting go of Ebiowei for nothing could hurt over the next few years.

Manchester United will make Frenkie de Jong offer

Manchester United will make a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The Lowdown: De Jong at Barca

De Jong, who previously worked under new United boss Erik ten Hag at Ajax, has been at the Nou Camp since 2019.

The 24-year-old has gone on to make 135 appearances for the Catalan giants, scoring 13 times and registering 17 assists.

He reportedly has a release clause of €400m (£337m) and is under contract to 2026, but it looks as if a reunion with Ten Hag could be on the cards.

The Latest: United bid

Sports Witness relayed an update from Spanish outlet Sport on Saturday regarding the Red Devils and De Jong.

They claimed that the Barcelona star is one of United’s ‘priority targets’ and there ‘will be an offer’ made for his services. Ten Hag’s arrival at Old Trafford ‘could change everything’ due to the pair’s positive relationship, the report adds.

The Verdict: Needed

Midfield reinforcements are required at Old Trafford this summer, especially with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic set to leave on free transfers.

De Jong is primarily a central midfielder but can also play as a defensive midfielder, and Ten Hag will know just how to get the best out of him.

Financially, a deal could prove difficult due to his huge release clause, however, landing De Jong, who still has plenty of years at the top ahead of him, could be an extremely shrewd move ahead of Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

Journalist criticises Alex Mowatt display

Journalist Steve Madeley has laid into West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt’s ineffective performance in his side’s 4-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest.

The Lowdown: Baggies humbled at Forest

Steve Bruce’s side made the trip to the City Ground on Monday evening, looking to pick up a rare positive result in an increasingly disappointing season.

The Baggies were thumped by their promotion-chasing opponents, however, trailing 3-0 at half-time, not helped by Darnell Furlong’s red card.

Forest added a fourth goal after the break, with the defeat leaving Bruce’s languishing 12th in the Championship table and effectively ending their playoff chances.

The Latest: Madeley critical of Mowatt

Mowatt had a bad evening, with Sofascore noting that his total of 23 touches was comfortably fewer than goalkeeper David Button managed (43), and Madeley took to Twitter to criticise his efforts:

“Molumby on for Mowatt, who has had a poor night.”

The Verdict: Can this season end?

After such confidence at the start of the season, when Valerien Ismael arriving as manager and automatic promotion expected by many, this has turned into a dismal campaign.

Mowatt perhaps sums it all up, also coming in with big expectations but not matching the hype, providing just six direct goal involvements and often frustrating fans.

For West Brom to be 12th in the league with the squad they have is simply not good enough and there must be question marks over Bruce’s future moving forward.

The right decisions need to be made in the summer, in terms of the manager and playing personnel, ensuring the Baggies produce a far stronger campaign next time around.

Adjusting to formats not a problem – Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar has said his decision to skip India’s last three one-day tournaments was not pre-determined, and that he had no difficulty in switching across the three versions of the game

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Oct-2010Sachin Tendulkar has said his decision to skip India’s last three one-day assignments was not predetermined, and that he had no difficulty in switching across the three versions of the game. It has been eight months since Tendulkar’s last ODI, in which he scored the format’s first double-century. Since then, he has missed the Asia Cup and the tri-series in Sri Lanka, as well as the home one-day series against Australia. In the meantime, he has been in top form in Test cricket, where he is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, and in non-international Twenty20s for the Mumbai Indians franchise.”The decision to skip the last two ODI series was taken at the last moment and was not pre-decided. My kit always contained coloured pads,” Tendulkar said. “I have been playing cricket for some time now. If I was not playing cricket there would be something to think about. Having been around for some time, I know how to adjust to the formats. I know my body. I would do whatever is needed for the World Cup and it won’t be pre-decided.”Tendulkar was guarded against losing sight of the upcoming New Zealand series by focusing on the potentially bigger challenges that lie ahead. “It’s tough to talk now about the South Africa series and the World Cup. The focus is on the Test series against New Zealand. We have got three Tests to play before South Africa. When we go there the focus would be on that. Before the World Cup, there’s lot of cricket to be played.”Tendulkar’s form in Test cricket has coincided with India’s rise to the top of the world rankings, and he cherished being a part of it. However, he was keen to keep improving as a batsman. “What we have been able to achieve as a team in the last few years is remarkable. We want to continue doing this. It feels good to be No. 1, but we want to continue playing well to stay there.”I would like to do better, would like to work harder. I don’t like to count the numbers. The closer I look at the ball is more important than the numbers.”Tendulkar will seek to score his 50th Test century during the series against New Zealand, which begins in Ahmedabad on November 4.

West Brom predicted XI vs Peterborough

After falling to a crushing 1-0 defeat against Queens Park Rangers in their latest Championship match due to an 87th-minute winner from former Baggies striker Charlie Austin, West Brom are back in action this afternoon with a home clash against Peterborough United.

With Ismael revealing in his recent press conference that Kean Bryan and Robert Snodgrass will be unavailable for the match, while Sam Johnstone and Alex Mowatt will reportedly be back next week, here’s how we feel West Brom will line up for today’s clash against Posh. We anticipate four changes from the team which started in the midweek defeat in west London.

In goal, with no Johnstone, it seems likely that David Button will keep his place in the team on this occasion for another attempt at keeping a clean sheet.

In a back three, with Cedric Kipre and Kyle Bartley set to return, we can see both of them starting alongside Matt Clarke. Darnell Furlong and Adam Reach, who is currently picking up £23k-per-week according to Salary Sport, drop out as a result.

For the wing-back positions, we think Conor Townsend will start on the left, moving from the centre of defence, with Taylor Gardner-Hickman on the right.

In midfield between those two, with no Alex Mowatt, it seems likely that Ismael will stick with club captain Jake Livermore alongside Jayson Molumby.

For the front three, Karlan Grant put in a good shift against QPR, so we think he’ll keep his place in the team on the left, while Grady Diangana comes in on the right to replace Callum Robinson.

Finally, Ismael could give Daryl Dike, who has previously been described as a “special” player by his former Orlando City teammate Nani, his first start in a West Brom shirt after the 21-year-old joined the club earlier this month and played 31 minutes against QPR off the substitutes’ bench. Matt Phillips is the man to drop out for the American.

Whether or not Ismael goes with the starting XI that we have suggested, this is still a great chance for the Baggies to claim three points and climb a step closer to the automatic promotion places, given Peterborough’s struggles in the league this season.

Far from humiliated, Afghanistan want more matches

Eliminated but far from embarrassed. Afghanistan need feel no shame at all as they depart the World Twenty20. Getting here was one of the sporting stories of all time and they certainly haven’t disgraced themselves against India and South Africa. Now their coach, Kabir Khan, wants the cricketing world to embrace Afghanistan and help them sustain their development by inviting the team for one-day and Twenty20 matches.Afghanistan can’t play matches at home – and it will be years until they can – and facilities are limited to one grass pitch so it will need wholehearted philanthropy from the global game to help. They currently have ODI status and Khan called on the top nations to give his side a chance in limited-overs matches to ensure the players’ growth can continue.”They have to play a lot more than a game or two. We’ve got ODI status and we can play Twenty20 internationals against any country in the world so the teams need to invite us,” Khan said. “They could invite players for training camps, they could invite them into the domestic games as professional or semi-professional, we don’t mind, but they should play cricket.”We want all the big cricket countries to help us in that. We’ve got talent, the boys are quite ready. They are quick learners and we expect that all the cricket nations watching us will help in that regard.”Khan hopes that being on television in front of millions will have been the ideal shop window for a number of his players and that they might attract interest from overseas. “It was good to see them on the television and they have been exposed,” he said.”As a coach that’s what I’m happy about because we want them to play tough professional cricket in other countries with a contract in South Africa, Australia, England or India. The main aim is to play for their country, but to get professional cricket they have to play the top countries. If you want to get used to facing the likes of [Dale] Steyn or [Morne] Morkel, or anyone on top of the world, they have to play against them in domestic cricket.”When the Afghanistan chase crashed to 32 for 8 against the type of pace bowling they’d never seen before it appeared they would leave with the unwanted record of the lowest Twenty20 international score. However, spirit and fight oozes through the line-up and gutsy innings from Mirwais Ashraf and Hamid Hassan, who earlier bowled superbly to take 3 for 21, hauled them above Kenya’s 67.”They were really quick, bowling at 90mph and there was swing as well so it was very difficult for our batsmen to face them,” captain Nowroz Mangal said. “They got early wickets and took the game from us.”And there was some style about the lower-order display, too, as the ninth-wicket pair hit four sixes between them, including one by Ashraf, off Albie Morkel, that cleared the Garry Sobers Pavilion and bounced into the net area. That followed a highly accomplished bowling display where South Africa were made to work hard for each of their 139 runs with Jacques Kallis’ 34 the top score as Mangal led from the front with three fine catches.Hassan lived up to his billing as the team’s poster boy with a display of death bowling as good as anything in the tournament so far. He, along with allrounder Mohammad Nabi, are two Afghanistan players who have had a taste of cricket overseas after they both were part of the MCC Young Cricketers scheme, while Nabi also plays domestically in Pakistan.”As a coach I am quite satisfied with their performance against the two top nations in the world – cricket wise and facilities wise – and they performed well,” Khan said. “Against India there was all sorts of pressure on them; there was television, there were the big stars, there was the crowd and they coped with it very well. Today, to restrict a batting line-up like South Africa to 139 is a big achievement so there are all sorts of pluses for them.”The key is they need to be exposed to that pressure again and again and then they’ll get used to it. On a bowling machine you can put it to 90mph but you can’t have Dale Steyn bowling at you and swinging the ball. So you have to face those bowlers to get the experience. Because my team are quick learners when they play against South Africa or India again they will do much better.”From the summit of playing South Africa at one of world’s finest cricket grounds Afghanistan now step back to the Associate level which they are beginning to dominate, but this experience will have left with them with a lifetime of memories. Now they want some help to make sure they come back again.

Everton: Fans react to DCL update

Everton insider ‘The Bobble’ has said that Dominic Calvert-Lewin could make his long-awaited comeback against Burnley.

The Twitter account, which is followed by renowned journalists such as The Athletic’s Everton correspondent Patrick Boyland and The Times’ Paul Joyce, tweeted on Monday evening that the striker was ‘in contention’ for the Boxing Day fixture.

As per The Bobble, the 24-year-old has returned to team training and is apparently feeling ‘no discomfort from his injury’. Everton’s medical staff will make a ‘final decision’ on his involvement closer to the trip to Turf Moor.

Calvert-Lewin played the first three Premier League games of the season, scoring in each one, but has since been sidelined with a fractured toe.

How big a boost will Calvert-Lewin’s comeback be?

Everton have managed just 14 goals in the 14 matches they’ve played since losing last season’s top scorer. For context, that’s as many as 19th-placed Newcastle United have netted in the same period.

The Toffees are already without two striking options in Richarlison and Salomon Rondon, so Calvert-Lewin’s return could be especially important.

Here’s how some Everton fans reacted to The Bobble’s “brilliant” update.
