Jayawardene hails 'confident' Perera

Isuru Udana, the left-arm fast bowler, had a forgettable ODI debut. His opening over contained five wides and two boundaries and went for 16. It was also the over that was to completely alter the course of the game. With India racing to 31 for 0 in three overs and Udana struggling to cope with the stiff breeze across the ground, Mahela Jayawardene handed the ball to Thisara Perera in the fourth. Perera started with three wicket-maidens taking out Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina in each. Three successive wicket-maidens. Almost unbelievable. He could have had a double-wicket maiden but for a dropped catch. Almost ridiculous. India managed 138.Jayawardene said Udana’s waywardness turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Sri Lanka. “Isuru strayed all over the place in the first over,” Jayawardene said. “I felt he was a bit too nervous trying to fight with the wind. He bowled really well at practice yesterday.”The other experienced bowlers I had were Thisara and Angelo [Mathews] so I just gave him the ball because the other day he bowled well from that end and did the job for us. He’s improved quite a bit in confidence and I think the consistency is the most important thing which he is striving for. He’s been consistent for us in the last six months to one year. Every day he keeps improving and he is putting his hand up to play Test cricket as well.”Increasingly, there is hardly anything that Perera cannot pull off on a cricket field. He slams sixes so effectively that he has already been compared to Lance Klusener and Shahid Afridi, by no less than his coach and captain respectively. Increasingly, defending sides, even if they are ahead, don’t feel a total is safe against Sri Lanka till Perera is dismissed.Increasingly, he is turning out to be that deceptive kind of bowler who can seem innocuous as he runs in, but can easily run through sides. He already has a six-for in ODIs. And he is a big asset in the field. Sehwag fell to the latter quality today, as Perera hung on to an acrobatic return catch. There was not much swing in the air, but Perera bowled a difficult length, got bounce with his height, and managed some seam movement. Just enough to take Kohli’s and Raina’s edges.Perera is having a memorable 2012. He has won games with his batting and bowling, he was Player of the Series in the ODIs against Pakistan and he has shared the new ball in a Test. What has done the trick for him? Tips from Shaun Pollock, the former South Africa fast bowler and Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach.”I think he is a good learner but I will be correct if I say he has worked closely with Shaun Pollock on his action during the IPL time because he wasn’t playing much,” Jayawardene said. “Polly has given him some good tips with his action. Polly is a great bowler to discuss those kinds of things with. I think [it is] a great opportunity for him so with that and with fast-bowling coaches he has been working hard to get his pace, to get his accuracy.”Something that he lacked was accuracy in hitting the seam in that good area. He is a tall boy. If he can hit that good area he is always going to create opportunities so I think that’s been the change and at practices he is with the ball doing something or with the bat, batting nets, throw downs. He wants to learn so good to see young guys doing that.”Perera said Pollock had asked him to be more upright in his delivery stride so that he could put more force into his bowling and hit the seam with more control. As Jayawardene said, “The IPL sometimes does help some of the players.”

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals in Mohali

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit04-May-2012Match factsSaturday, May 5, Mohali
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Mandeep Singh is Kings XI’s leading run-getter this season•AFP

Big PictureFor a side lacking the power and big names of other IPL teams like Kolkata Knight Riders or Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab have a creditable away record this season, having won four of six games. It is at home where they have struggled, with only one win out of four matches in Mohali. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals have struggled to win away from their home ground, Sawai Mansingh Stadium, with four losses from five games. If you go by their form this season, neither team is a favourite for tomorrow’s game in Mohali. Royals, though, are going in with a run of four consecutive losses. In three of those defeats, it was their much-praised batting which failed to score sufficient runs. They lost only 13 wickets in these three games, suggesting that the top order used up a lot of overs.Kings XI, meanwhile, have had consecutive away wins, over fancied Royal Challengers and Chennai Super Kings. A loss tomorrow will hurt Royals more, and will leave them in need of having to win possibly every remaining game.Form guide(completed games, most recent first)
Kings XI Punjab: WWLWL
Rajasthan Royals: LLLLWPlayers to watchRahul Dravid has been in fine touch and has scored 333 runs, but his strike-rate of 116.02 has meant he has not been able to dictate terms. His average innings has lasted close to 30 deliveries, which increases the pressure on the middle order in big chases, or on flat pitches. Mohali hasn’t exactly been a high-scoring venue this season, though.Mandeep Singh’s record for the season, 277 runs at 118.37, is similar to Dravid’s. The young batsman, who plays for Punjab in the domestic circuit, has had a role to play in Kings XI’s previous two wins. Like Dravid, Mandeep is more at ease when playing orthodox shots.Stats and trivia The highest team total in Mohali this season is 171, which is lowest among all venues. Royals have the worst away win-loss ratio, 0.68, among the eight old IPL franchises.Quotes”It was obviously a very positive week for us. We have won matches against some big teams at big stadiums… the challenge for us now is to rectify what we have done [wrong] here in Mohali.”

“The first thing we have to do is to get a win, arrest the slide and get back some of the momentum.”

New Zealand to hit South Africa with specialised attack

New Zealand will bank on a more specialised bowling attack for the series against South Africa than they have in the past. With a four-pronged pace attack for the Tests, and four spinners to choose from in the limited-overs matches, stand-in captain Brendon McCullum said New Zealand’s current make-up is perhaps the strongest it has ever been.”We’ve got a nice balance between our seam bowlers and our spinners. In the past we operated with a few more fiddly bowlers rather than specialists,” McCullum said ahead of the first Twenty20 in Wellington. “I think that’s one of the things we do possess at the moment: legitimate seam and legitimate spin bowling.”New Zealand’s spinners – three may feature in the first match – are being talked about as a trump card. Canterbury’s slow bowlers restricted South Africa’s batsmen in the tour match, and although the visitors have performed well against spin in recent times, a residue of their reputation for struggling against spin remains.McCullum watched the tour match and took someimportant lessons from it. “The Canterbury spinners bowled really well,” he said. “It was a little bit different for the South Africans as well because, having [had] such a good start they tried to push the run-rate, so maybe they became a little more susceptible to changes of pace.”South Africa scored only 52 runs in the last eight overs of their tour match and McCullum said he expected them to show greater intent in the internationals. “They will go up a gear from yesterday. They looked like they were just trying to blow a few cobwebs out.”McCullum hoped the trio of Rob Nicol, Nathan McCullum and Ronnie Hira will be able to repeat that success. “That [spin] is one of the areas we think we are reasonably strong,” McCullum said. “Hopefully if we can give our spinners the opportunity to get into the game early, they’ll be able to settle into their work and put them [South Africa] under some pressure.”There’s a couple of things that we think we might be able to exploit. “Across the board they are a pretty solid team and we know we will have to execute at our best to succeed. There’s some areas where we think we may be able to expose them.”Before looking to exploit South Africa’s weaknesses, McCullum said he will impress on his group the need to lay foundations first. In the second Twenty20 against Zimbabwe, New Zealand were tested for the first time in the series and looked rushed and even vulnerable at times. McCullum said they could not repeat such “giddy execution,” and he will make sure there is an air of calm before they take the field against South Africa.”We have to make sure we execute the basics before we get too tactically funky. If we do the basics well it will give us the opportunity to try and exploit some of those areas that we think we can target.”Like South Africa, New Zealand also have one eye on the World Twenty20 later in the year but McCullum was not looking too far ahead. “You do have to look at what’s down the track but our focus is on making sure we start the series well. It’s a big series for us.”

Auckland edged out by Duckworth-Lewis

Rain affected all the three games, ensuring that two were decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method while the third was washed out. Canterbury handed Auckland their first loss of the tournament as the hosts ended just six runs short of the par score when rain forced an early finish at Colin Maiden Park.Gareth Hopkins and Colin Munro had brought Auckland’s chase back on track after they had been reduced to 49 for 4. After a brisk 82-run stand, though, Munro was stumped off Rob Nicol for 53 with the score on 131 in the 26th over. Not only did his dismissal increase the par score, it also tied Auckland down, with only seven coming off the next 16 deliveries before the rain came down. Auckland ended on 138 for 5 with the par score being 144 at that stage.Brendon Diamanti had earlier smashed an unbeaten 102 from 79 balls to lift Canterbury to 238 for 9 after they lost regular wickets throughout their innings. Diamanti hammered seven sixes and four fours while the expensive Michael Bates finished with four wickets.Northern Districts won their first game of the tournament, beating Wellington by 27 runs at the Basin Reserve. James Marshall anchored the Northern Districts’ innings with his unbeaten 110 and added 103 for the second wicket with his twin brother Hamish Marshall (64). Scott Styris added an aggressive fifty as well before Corey Anderson took the game away from Wellington with a late assault. Coming in at the fall of the fifth wicket at 222 in the 42nd over, Anderson clubbed six sixes and four fours in surging to an unbeaten 74 off only 31 balls. Northern Districts ended on a stiff 327 despite the efforts of Andy McKay and Luke Woodcock who took five wickets between them at four an over. Michael Papps got Wellington going with a fifty but they lost too many wickets at the other end. They were 221 for 6 after 38 overs, 27 short of the par score, when rain ended the game. The match between Central Districts and Otago in Nelson was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Cost, structure behind Twenty20 culling – ICC

The decision to cut four Associate-Affiliate teams from the next two World Twenty20 events was taken because of the structural issues, including costing, the ICC has said

The decision to cut four Associate-Affiliate teams from the next two World Twenty20 events was taken because of the structural issues, including costing, with regard to a “package” of three ICC events, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has said. The three events are the World Test Championship, the 50-over World Cup, and the World Twenty20; by adding four teams to the 2015 50-over World Cup, the ICC had no choice but cut the number from the Twenty20 events.”If you change one, you have to change the other,” he told ESPNcricinfo. When asked if it cost was a factor Lorgat replied, “It is true to say that there are always financial implications… part of the restructure brought in a Test championship. That’s a new model, a new event so obviously you’ve got to fund it. We wanted to have a 10-team World Cup in a 50-over format, which is sustainable provided you have context and you have a proper contest. In the World Twenty20, we were prepared to go up to 16 teams competing in that event. In order to balance all of that, it was very much a package decision we had made where funding would have balanced out, the model would have balanced out, the competition would have worked in my view… Once you change one, you have to see what the implications are on the other. And it was 14 teams in the World Cup and back to 12 in the Twenty20.”Lorgat did not reveal the increase in cost that would have been incurred from hosting another 16-nation Twenty20 event next year but Associate-Affiliate representatives understood the cost of four more teams from the non-Test playing nations would be an additional $3 million per event. When asked whether the package plan had been explained to the smaller nations in April, Lorgat said, “I didn’t meet with them personally, but they have delegates with them who are engaged in these debates.” In the Executive Board, the 40 smaller nations are represented by the heads of Bermuda, Scotland and Singapore.Later, speaking at a press conference, Lorgat said the decision would not be changed, “It was important for us to have made that decision [about the size of the World Twenty20 field] in this conference because the planning for that event is well under way… we will be releasing match schedules, venues and so on and that decision is pretty much cast in stone.”The ICC ended its annual conference with a full council meeting at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, housed in Hong Kong’s tallest building, the International Commerce Centre. Representatives from Malaysia, Botswana and Papua New Guinea spoke for their comrades, expressing their displeasure and what the subsequent ICC statement called “disappointment” at the package agreement. As the conference broke up after a final group photograph and one last lunch, feelings were mixed. Twenty20 has always been sold as the easiest format with which to globalise the sport and to have numbers slashed after offering six non-Test nations a spot in next year’s event has disappointed many. Several Associates have worked at getting their teams into the World T20 qualifying competition in the UAE next year, only to be told that the numbers had been cut from six to two. Lorgat conceded the point: “I support the view that the best way to globalise the game would be through the Twenty20 format and that is held every alternate year. So in my view 16 teams participating in the Twenty20 every two years is the way to globalise the game. But as I said, this was part of a comprehensive restructure, if you change the one you have to change the other.”Some younger Associate representatives said it was the first time they had got a chance to be heard. One of the older members, attending his 20th and last ICC annual meeting, said he believed the Associates and Affiliates had found their voice and he found them more confident than ever before. But he said that in the past, the Full Members had mingled more freely with the Associates and Affiliates whereas in Hong Kong there had been clear social divisions between the two. In this conference, the first time in five days that the two worlds collided was on the last night of the event on Wednesday at the gala dinner. The ICC’s growing globalised world is far from flat.

Hughes makes timely return to form

Chesney Hughes ended a lean run with his first century of the season to lead an impressive Derbyshire fightback against Surrey at Derby

29-May-2011
ScorecardChesney Hughes ended a lean run with his first century of the season to lead an impressive Derbyshire fightback on the opening day of their County Championship match against Surrey at Derby.Hughes made 124 and was well supported by Wes Durston (47) and Dan Redfern (55), to foil Surrey after Tim Linley had struck twice in the first four overs. Linley cut short New Zealand Test opener Martin Guptill’s debut innings and Surrey’s decision to put Derbyshire in looked a good one at 16 for 2, but Hughes survived a torrid start to put the home side in a good position on 375 for 7 at the close. The Anguillan came into the match with an average of 24 and had to ride his luck during a morning session when Surrey could have taken at least two more wickets. Overcast conditions and some early life in the pitch made batting demanding as the Surrey seamers repeatedly beat the bat and had a number of convincing lbw appeals rejected.Linley removed South African opener Wayne Madsen for one in the second over with a ball that moved sharply to fly to gully where Mark Ramprakash made no mistake. Jade Dernbach had taken nine wickets for England Lions against the Sri Lankans at Derby last week but when he greeted Guptill with a short ball, the Kiwi hooked it over the square leg boundary for six.But his stay was a brief one as Linley plunged forward in the next over to take a return catch after Derbyshire’s new overseas recruit aimed a drive at a ball that seemed to stop on him. Hughes and Durston then had their work cut out to survive but they also played some confident strokes when the bowlers strayed in direction. After Hughes had brought up the 100 by cover driving Gareth Batty for four, the third-wicket pair were minutes away from lunch when Durston was lbw playing back to a ball from Linley that kept low. But the afternoon belonged to Hughes and Redfern who batted through the session, adding 130 runs with Hughes reaching his century, which included 12 fours and a five after a Jason Roy throw missed the stumps, from 179 balls.Hughes launched Batty for six after tea but the spinner broke a stand that had added 144 in 39 overs when Redfern played across the line and there was more success for Surrey in the last hour.Tom Jewell celebrated his second Championship victim when Hughes top-edged a pull at the 20-year-old seamer, and Linley cut short Greg Smith’s aggressive run to 34 when he edged to first slip.Dernbach had Jon Clare caught behind but Luke Sutton (39 not out) and Steffan Jones (25no) put the gloss on a good day for Derbyshire by banking a fourth batting point in the evening sunshine.
