Doubts raised on McGregor captaining Celtic

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie isn’t sure whether Callum McGregor can step up and replace Scott Brown as captain.

Following the recent confirmation that 35-year-old Brown will leave and join Aberdeen as a player-coach, the Hoops are in search of a new skipper for the first time since the midfielder took the reigns from Stephen McManus back in 2009.

Only James Forrest and Tom Rogic have been with the Glasgow giants for longer than McGregor, who came through the ranks at Celtic Park, although McAvennie doesn’t seem convinced that the Scottish international has got what it takes to follow in Brown’s footsteps.

McGregor, whose the current vice-captain in Paradise, would appear the obvious choice to take the role, but that could quickly change when Celtic eventually appoint a replacement for Neil Lennon.

However, McGregor has worn the armband when Brown hasn’t available this season and would therefore be the favourite to replace Brown.

McAvennie told Football FanCast: “McGregor’s in there, but I’m not sure McGregor’s a captain. I don’t know if he’s got that pull.

“Paul McStay was quiet, he was the captain when I was playing, but he was quiet. But he did things in the park that would drag people through the game.

“Maybe Callum’s got that in him, but I think Soro and Turnbull might be the future, but I don’t know if they’re ready to make an assault on Europe.”

It was never going to be easy for whoever takes over from Brown, but given he’s the vice-captain, is relatively experienced and has only ever known Celtic, you’d be surprised not to see McGregor get the role, unless the Hoops make a shock summer signing.

Aston Villa: Fans hit out at Trezeguet

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have hit out at Trezeguet’s first half display against Tottenham on social media.

Dean Smith made two changes from the 1-1 draw with Newcastle United last time out, with Morgan Sanson and Matty Cash coming in for Jacob Ramsey and Ahmed Elmohamady respectively.

Trezeguet kept his place in the side, making his 11th Premier League start of the current campaign on Sunday night and his 20th appearance in all competitions.

However, his first half display didn’t hit the right note with some supporters, who took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the Egypt international.

Villa fans react

The 26-year-old began on the left-hand side of a front three alongside Ollie Watkins and Bertrand Traore, coming up against Spurs’ Japhet Tanganga, with one fan comparing the clash between the two as to ‘League One’ level.

In the first half at Villa Park, the 26-year-old failed to register a shot or win an aerial duel, while also recording fewer than 10 accurate passes (SofaScore).

This is what some Villa fans had to say about the wide man’s performance in the first 45, with one describing it as ‘abysmal’.

“I really don’t enjoy being negative or slagging players, and I know we are missing Jack but Trezeguet is such an awful player! I genuinely don’t think he brings anything to table, very few players have ever left me feeling as frustrated in the 30 odd years I’ve been watching”

Journalist claims Celtic want Enzo Maresca

Celtic have identified Enzo Maresca as their ‘first target’ for the vacant managerial role, according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira.

The Hoops have yet to announce a permanent successor to Neil Lennon after he tendered his resignation in late February amid the club’s struggles.

John Kennedy has taken over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

The lowdown on Enzo Maresca

Maresca has not managed a senior team before but he has been an assistant at Sevilla and West Ham United. He worked under Premier League-winning manager Manuel Pellegrini at the London Stadium during the 2018/19 season.

This season, he has taken charge of Manchester City’s under-23s and done an impressive job. They sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League 2 table and boast by far the best goal difference in the division, netting 53 goals whilst only conceding 23.

According to Schira, that form has caught the eye of the Parkhead hierarchy as they look to build a project to rival that of Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Perhaps some Celtic fans would instinctively prefer a more established name, one who has already demonstrated his credentials as a senior manager, but this isn’t necessarily a link to be dismissed. Maresca is a manager who will have been tasked with implementing Pep Guardiola’s philosophy at the youth level, such is the culture at Manchester City.

High-quality football will surely be vital to addressing the mounting discontent at Parkhead. Celtic should not be overwhelmingly preoccupied with reputation, instead choosing a manager who would be a good fit and would likely restore the club to the summit of Scottish football.

In other news, Frank McAvennie is desperate for a different managerial appointment at Celtic.

Liverpool needed solid Van Dijk replacement

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has suggested that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is probably not too pleased with how his club have dealt with Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

Van Dijk has been out injured since October following a challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and is expected to miss the rest of the season, with Liverpool unable to put a time frame on the defender’s return.

Since then, the Reds have gone on to sign Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak from Schalke in an effort to bolster an injury-plagued defence.

Palmer, however, believes Klopp would have been disappointed with the club’s failure to bring in a replacement of a similar calibre to Van Dijk during the January transfer window.

In an exclusive interview with FFC, the retired England international said:

“There are certain people that just can’t be out your team, and Virgil van Dijk is one of those players for Liverpool. He’s an outstanding defender. And so, you know, should they have replaced him at Christmas?

“From the way Klopp was speaking, I don’t think funds were available for him to do that. So I think he wasn’t too pleased about that.”

Given Van Dijk’s influence since arriving at Liverpool from Southampton, helping the Merseyside club to a Premier League title and Champions League trophy, Klopp certainly could have done with an elite centre-back coming in.

RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, who will join Bayern Munich in the summer, was one central defender that Liverpool were said to be interested in, with club legend Jamie Carragher having previously urged his old side to snap him up.

Glasgow Rangers star Kemar Roofe was Steven Gerrard’s hero vs Motherwell

Glasgow Rangers fought back to beat Motherwell at Ibrox and extend their lead at the top of the table.

Kemar Roofe bagged a brace and Cedric Itten struck his first goal in the Scottish Premiership since he opened his account with a late double at Motherwell last time out to ensure Steven Gerrard’s side avoided their second defeat in four days.

Motherwell took a surprise lead after Callum Lang scored inside six minutes, but the Light Blues came from behind to secure the victory and stretch their lead over Celtic to 16 points at the summit of the top flight.

Rangers skipper James Tavernier looked lively, Jermain Defoe was solid albeit unspectacular, but Roofe was in top form to deny the Steelmen any chance of a comeback.

The versatile 27-year-old forward was once again given an opportunity on the right wing and stole the show for Gerrard’s side, even outshining Defoe despite the veteran striker leading the line.

Roofe was at the heart of almost everything going forwards, as he looked comfortable on the ball and confident in possession, displaying high levels of concentration when carrying the ball into the box, as he only lost possession six times.

He was a fine example of the typical right-winger, cutting in from the outside, completing 80% of his passes and one out of his two dribble attempts.

Moreover, Roofe won two out of four aerial duels he contested, made one clearance and drew a foul, which shows that he was a real handful at both ends of the pitch.

He also took a staggering 4 shots on target – more than Defoe – and had one shot blocked and missed one big chance as Rangers worked their way back into the game. If it weren’t for a wayward shot, he could’ve easily had a hattrick, judging by his individual display.

The Jamaican can play as an attacking midfielder in the middle, in a more central role or on the right, while he can also lead the line as a centre-forward, which suggests Gerrard may have some thinking to do before his side face St. Johnstone on Wednesday night.

Given his impressive run of form in recent weeks, with a tally of eight goals and one assist to his name in the top flight, it’s surely only a matter of time before he starts upfront for the Gers again.

AND in other news, Glasgow Rangers could have the perfect Glen Kamara partner in Sheffield United star John Lundstram…

Adarabioyo was Parker’s star vs Spurs

Fulham extended their recent unbeaten run as they earned an impressive 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Jose Mourinho’s side looked to be in control after Harry Kane’s first-half header but a superb second-half display from Scott Parker’s side saw them deservedly leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a point, following Ivan Cavaleiro’s second goal of the season.

There were lots of impressive performers for the Cottagers in North London, with Alphonse Areola making some superb saves in goal, whilst Ademola Lookman starred from the bench, but it was perhaps Tosin Adarabioyo who impressed the most.

The centre-back, who joined from Manchester City during the summer transfer window, picked up a 7.0 rating from SofaScore for his display, which was the joint-best of any Fulham defender, with only Harrison Reed, Cavaleiro and Bobby Decordova-Reid rated higher of the Fulham players who started the match.

As per SofaScore, the 23-year-old centre-back would block one shot, make three tackles, and perhaps most impressively, make as many as nine clearances, in what was a superb defensive effort.

Whilst the Fulham man has averaged a strong 6.1 clearances per game in the Premier League so far this season, it was clear that he stepped up to another level on Wednesday night making almost three more than his average in 2020/21.

The young centre-back, who earns £60k per week at Fulham, would also win 100% of his aerial duels during the game, which is impressive when you consider the threat that Harry Kane poses in the Spurs attack.

Whilst the England captain was on the scoresheet, Adarabioyo’s impressive display limited his impact on the game, as he was only able to win 1/9 of his aerial duels during the game – he won 3/5 in Tottenham’s 3-0 win against Leeds United last time out in the Premier League as a comparison. Kane was also limited to just 44 touches, which was the lowest of any Spurs player who started the game.

As a result, he earned a 7.12 rating from WhoScored, which is well below his average rating of 7.86 in the Premier League so far this season and is also his worst home top-flight statistical performance since the opening day defeat against Everton.

Therefore, it is clear that the Fulham defence often had the better of Kane on what was a frustrating night for the 27-year-old, and Adarabioyo was a huge part of that. He dominated the prolific forward in the air throughout the 90 minutes, which will definitely have delighted Parker as the London club picked up another vital point in their Premier League campaign.

Anthony Gordon: Ancelotti must hand Everton gem rare start amid Richarlison blow

Carlo Ancelotti must unleash Anthony Gordon in Everton’s Boxing Day trip to Sheffield United with the Toffees potentially without Richarlison.

The Blues travel to Bramall Lane looking to match last season’s 1-0 win over Chris Wilder’s Blades but could be without game-winner Richarlison, after he was substituted off during Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester United.

And according to The Guardian, the Goodison Park natives are awaiting the results of further tests to determine whether or not Richarlison can feature against Sheffield United as the club refuses to breach the Football Association’s concussion protocols.

Richarlison has claimed in a message shared on Twitter that “everything is fine” after receiving an accidental elbow to the head in a collision with Eric Bailly, which saw Everton’s club doctor instruct Ancelotti to withdraw the Brazilian from the game.

Everton are yet to win a top-flight fixture without Richarlison featuring at some stage since his £50m arrival from Watford in 2018, including all three Premier League fixtures this season whilst the 23-year-old was suspended after a red card in the Merseyside Derby.

Ancelotti will be eager to avoid a repeat string of results should Richarlison not be eligible to face Sheffield United, and therefore must turn to Gordon and hand the academy product his first league start of the campaign.

Gordon has played just 32 minutes of Premier League football this season, including a sole one-minute cameo since October, despite offering three assists in two Carabao Cup appearances during the early rounds in September.

The 19-year-old was clearly surprised by his limited opportunities to impress after catching Ancelotti’s attention last term, but looked positively on the situation having spoken with the Everton boss to discuss a route back into the Italian’s plans.

“I didn’t go and bang his door down, I went and asked politely: ‘What can I do better to get in the team?’,” Gordon told EvertonTV. “I always want to get better and improve as a player. I just wanted his views on that – he gave me his view and I am trying to work on that every day.”

Ancelotti had noted after a sublime display against Leicester City in July how he felt ready to invest “a lot of trust and confidence” in Gordon, believing the England U20 international is “physically good and has a lot of ability and technical skills”.

That confidence has clearly not returned the chances Gordon would have liked this season, but the potential loss of Richarlison perfectly re-opens the door for Ancelotti to usher the teenage prospect back into the fold.

AND in other news, Marcel Brands will have to ditch his favoured Everton approach to sign a sought-after £18m enforcer.
