Will Jacks, Jason Roy keep unbeaten Surrey flying high

Surrey 147 for 3 (Jacks 57, Roy 50) beat Sussex 146 for 7 (Hudson-Prentice 49*) by seven wickets Will Jacks and Jason Roy both hit sparkling half-centuries as South Group leaders Surrey stretched their unbeaten start to the Vitality Blast campaign to six matches by crushing Sussex Sharks by seven wickets at the Kia Oval.A crowd of 15,000 saw Jacks add a 37-ball 57 to an earlier wicket and astonishing boundary catch as Surrey easily chased down Sussex’s 146 for 7, in which Fynn Hudson-Prentice top-scored for the visitors with a 49 not out from 44 balls that anchored the innings but provided no real forward thrust. There were still 3.3 overs remaining when Surrey reached 147 for 3 in reply, completing their total outclassing of a Sharks side who have now lost four of their opening seven Blast fixtures.Surrey’s mastery was summed up by Chris Jordan, their captain, bowling a double-wicket maiden in Sussex’s 18th over, and with five wins only a no result wash-out against Glamorgan at Cardiff denies them a 100 per cent record.Jacks and Roy reeled off a stream of magnificent and powerful strokes in an opening partnership of 110 in just 12.3 overs as the Sharks attack was taken apart in ruthless fashion. Both hit sixes as Delray Rawlins’s left-arm spin was plundered for 19 in the first over of Surrey’s reply, and Jacks then extra cover drove and swung Tymal Mills for four and six in a third over costing 18.Steven Finn’s second over went for 15 and Roy then merely punched Obed McCoy’s left-arm pace straight for a purely-timed four and Jacks thrashed Mills high over extra cover as the six-over powerplay ended with Surrey 72 without loss.Roy eventually sliced McCoy to cover to go for 50 from 41 balls, with two sixes and four fours, and three wickets in six balls momentarily slowed Surrey’s progress as Sam Curran (1) played McCoy on to his stumps and Jacks skied to deep extra cover after hitting two sixes and six fours.Kieron Pollard, though, sauntered in to launch both Archie Lenham and Mills for sixes in an unbeaten cameo of 23 and Laurie Evans also thrashed a cover four off the suffering Mills in his 10 not out.Sunil Narine, meanwhile, again Surrey’s outstanding bowler, conceded no fours off the bat in his 4-0-21-1 and – remarkably – the former West Indies mystery spinner has been struck for just three in the 20 overs he has so far sent down in this season’s competition. It was Narine, indeed, who ended Harrison Ward’s 23-ball 31 after the young left-hander had at least offered some lusty blows, including a six over long off against Worrall, in a fifth-wicket stand of 51 in seven overs with Hudson-Prentice.But the Sussex innings always struggled to get going, despite Tom Alsop clubbing Reece Topley for successive legside sixes in the fourth over – an over that ended, however, with Topley bowling Tim Seifert for 4 through an ugly slog. That left the Sharks 35 for 2 and they had lost their first wicket when Jacks pulled off a sensational, leaping one-handed catch on the deep square leg ropes to dismiss Ravi Bopara for 6 off Dan Worrall.Rawlins, trying to force off the back foot, then succeeded only in edging a simple catch to Topley at short third man off Jacks’ third ball, in the fifth over.Topley dived full length to his right, in the same position, to cling on brilliantly to a reverse slap from Alsop six overs later as the left-hander, who scored 38 off 28 balls, tried in vain to break the shackles imposed by Narine.Jordan’s double-strike in the 18th over removed both Ward, carving to deep point, and Oli Carter, leg-before for a duck, and McCoy was run out for 2 in the final over when Hudson-Prentice attempted to pinch a bye when the tailender heaved and missed at Jordan.Mills did manage to thump Jordan past mid off for four in that last over and the innings ended with four leg byes to fine leg off Hudson-Prentice’s pads – but there had simply not been enough boundaries for the Sharks against a talented and varied Surrey attack.

Jack Grealish branded a ‘huge success’ at Man City despite going over a year without Premier League goal as club legend dismisses £100m price-tag concerns for ‘exceptional’ winger

Jack Grealish has been a “huge success” at Manchester City, says Richard Dunne, despite questions being asked of value for money in a £100m transfer.

The England international forward became the most expensive player in British football when moving to the Etihad Stadium from boyhood club Aston Villa in 2021. He now has three Premier League titles to his name and formed part of a historic Treble triumph in 2022-23.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish has, however, faced accusations of changing his game under Pep Guardiola – with the 29-year-old seemingly reluctant to carry the ball as much as he did at Villa. His end product has also dried up since swapping the West Midlands for the North West.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Just 16 goals have been registered for City through 151 appearances, with his last effort in the English top-flight coming over 14 months ago on December 16, 2023. As many headlines have been made off the field of late as on it.

  • WHAT RICHARD DUNNE SAID

Quizzed on whether Grealish has justified his nine-figure price tag, former City captain Dunne – speaking in association with – told GOAL: “The price tag is what it is, that’s the business of Premier League football at the moment.

“If you look at any player that is involved in a Treble-winning team, they have justified their reasons for being there. Jack was a huge part of that Treble-winning side, so I don’t think anyone can doubt that he has been a success at Man City. He has been a huge success.

“He has probably not had the goals and assists that everyone wants to look at and see, but his performances and what he’s brought to the club and the team have been exceptional. If he was to leave in the summer, I don’t think people would say it has been a failed move. He’s had a really successful time and hopefully it will continue for more years, rather than thinking that’s the end this summer.”

Rest not on Mitchell Starc's mind with more pink-ball wickets in his sights

Australia quick Mitchell Starc is adamant he doesn’t need or want to rest for the fifth Ashes Test in Hobart, especially as it will be a pink-ball Test under lights.Starc has been Australia’s leading fast bowling in the series with 15 wickets and the only one to play all four Tests so far, but he laboured a bit in Sydney on a surface that has traditionally not suited him.He took 1 for 124 from 34 overs at the SCG and had some trouble with the footmarks on the final day, wincing at times during his final spell with the second new ball as Australia pushed to bowl out England prior to stumps. However, speaking on Wednesday, Starc said he was fully fit and available to play and was not at all keen to be rested.”I hope not, it’s a pink-ball game,” Starc said. “[I’m] feeling good. Obviously, we’ve had a couple of days now to get ready for the fifth Test match.”It’s purely up to the selectors. I’m not looking for a break. It’s the last Test match of an Ashes series at home. It’s a pink-ball game too. I’d very much like to play. I guess it’s in the hands of the selectors. But I won’t be asking for rest.”Australia have a selection squeeze amongst both its batting and bowling groups. The selectors are trying to find a way to bring back Travis Head after he missed the Sydney Test due to Covid-19, while his replacement Usman Khawaja created an irresistible case to be retained thanks to brilliant twin centuries. There is a similar squeeze with the bowlers. Jhye Richardson is fully fit having missed the Melbourne and Sydney Test matches due to left shin soreness. Scott Boland came into the side in his place and has taken 14 wickets at an insane average of 8.64.Scott Boland clutches his side after slipping on release•Getty Images

Boland bowled magnificently again in Sydney but did need injections in his ribs to get through the match after he fell heavily on his side while bowling in the first innings. Scans did clear him of any serious damage but Starc was unsure how Boland had pulled up.”I don’t know. I think he went to the gym yesterday.” Starc said. “No doubt he’ll be at training and bowl today. He’s a quiet character but quite a resilient one. So no doubt he’ll be looking forward to taking part in this Test as well.”Boland was heralded as a horses for courses selection at the MCG and SCG but if the selectors were to apply the same logic in Hobart then Richardson would have a strong case to return. Richardson took a five-wicket haul in the fourth innings in Adelaide with the pink ball and averages 20.70 in day-night first-class matches, two of which have been Tests. He also took seven wickets in his only Sheffield Shield game at Bellerive Oval earlier this summer.Boland averages 22.64 in pink-ball games and is the only Australia quick to have played two pink-ball Shield games in Hobart, but he took just three wickets at 60.33 in those two matches. His overall record at Bellerive is a bizarre anomaly. He has 13 wickets at 64 in eight first-class matches there, whereas he averages under 20 at the SCG, the Gabba and Adelaide Oval, and 25 at the MCG.While the selectors ponder what pace attack to choose, Starc and his captain Pat Cummins are debating who should bat at No. 8 given Starc’s recent form with the bat.Related

  • How can Australian selectors leave Usman Khawaja out of fifth Test?

Starc has made 151 runs in the series and only been dismissed twice, making valuable contributions in each of the four Tests. He is far more credentialed with the bat from a pure run-scoring perspective than Cummins, averaging 23.60 for his career with 10 half-centuries, while Cummins averages 16.63 with just two fifties.Cummins moved ahead of Starc in the order after the 2017-18 Ashes on the basis that Cummins occupied more balls than Starc in order to hang around with the specialist batters for longer. Cummins averages 37 balls per innings compared to Starc’s 26.But in the last two series, Starc has averaged 33 balls per innings and 38.66 per dismissal having been not out in six of his 11 innings, while Cummins has averaged 35 balls per innings and 14.75 per dismissal, leading to a conversation about who should bat higher.”We have sort of started that conversation about where we were both going to bat, we both want to bat No. 9 I think,” Starc said. “He’s the captain after all. So we’ll see how that pans out this week.”Starc said his wife, Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, has noted his improved numbers with the bat.”Alyssa has been laughing at me because she’s seen I’ve been hitting a lot more and obviously spending a bit more time in the middle,” Starc said. “She’s taking the mickey out of me about how much I’ve been batting at training. Whether that’s paying off, I guess, in a way it has been.”We’ve got Michael Di Venuto with us at the moment who’s just been fantastic. I did a lot of work with him in his first stint as the batting coach. And then since he’s come back, working with him and Andrew McDonald just on getting a clear game plan.”Technically I haven’t changed anything, probably since the World Cup in 2019. Doing a little bit of work with Ricky Ponting [in 2019] seemed to have put me in some good positions as well. It’s more about just getting some time out in training and then in the middle, but having clear plans on what I’m trying to achieve.”

Man Utd make contact to sign £45,000-a-week defender ahead of Barcelona

Hoping to take their place among Europe’s elite both on and off the pitch, Manchester United are now reportedly racing to sign a bargain defensive reinforcement ahead of Barcelona in 2025.

Man Utd transfer news

Given Ruben Amorim’s official arrival, it’s no real surprise that the transfer rumours have been coming thick and fast for Manchester United. The Red Devils are in desperate need of a turnaround and the transfer window should play a large part in that. But Dan Ashworth and Sir Jim Ratcliffe must get things right on that front.

Already, the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and former Manchester City defender Danilo have been linked to Old Trafford in a potential sign of things to come.

There’s no doubt that Gyokeres would be a standout signing, given his reputation as one of Europe’s most clinical goalscorers and one who completed his best work under Amorim. In fact, in the Portuguese manager’s final home game at Sporting CP, Gyokeres netted a rather fitting hat-trick in a 4-1 thrashing of Manchester City in the Champions League.

Before those at Old Trafford splash the cash, however, they could land a bargain defensive reinforcement for Amorim and his backline. According to reports in Spain, Manchester United have now made contact over a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah ahead of Barcelona next summer. The Bayer Leverkusen ace may represent one of the smartest deals next summer with his contract coming to an end at the German club at the end of the season.

A player who played a vital part in Leverkusen’s historic invincible domestic campaign last time out, Tah could emerge to form quite the partnership with Matthijs de Ligt for the Red Devils next season.

"Strong" Tah could partner De Ligt and Maguire

Whilst De Ligt is yet to transform the Manchester United backline like it seemed he would when swapping Bayern Munich for the Premier League, Tah’s arrival could go a long way towards doing just that. The German is an experienced defender these days as well as a historic winner who could slot into a back three alongside De Ligt and Maguire to hand Amorim the missing piece to play his favoured system.

Outperforming his potential future teammates, Tah is the defensive leader that United so desperately need, especially in a back three under Amorim.

The German’s rise is one that his former national team manager saw coming, with Joachim Low saying via the official Bundesliga website at the start of Tah’s Germany career: “He’s a young player with a lot of potential. He’s physically strong and very quick. Everything is possible.”

Earning a reported £45,000-a-week, Tah ticks the boxes for experience, leadership and a bargain option who would not disrupt United’s wage bill.

Despite being expected to come into the starting line-up, Eriksen was ruled out of Sunday's game against Spurs through illness. With a depleted squad and eight academy players making up the most of the bench, United would go on to lose 1-0 and slip to 15th in the table. After the game, Amorim explained that they could not take a risk on the midfielder's health.

Explaining the Dane's absence, Amorim said: "Chris [Eriksen] has the heart situation and we have to be really careful with that – it’s nothing about the heart! I’m just saying the heart rate has to be controlled because he has a fever."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Eriksen collapsed on the pitch in the European Championships in 2021 against Finland and has been playing with a heart-starting device since. He returned to the Premier League with Brentford and his performances were good enough to persuade United to take a chance on him as a free agent. While Eriksen has played without trouble at Old Trafford, the club do not want to risk his health when he is not well.

Eriksen's illness is not thought to be anything major and he will likely return to action for United in their next Premier League game against Everton. The fixture also sees ex-United boss David Moyes aiming to take yet more points from the Red Devils.

9/10 Spurs star is becoming Ange’s very own Martin Odegaard

Tottenham Hotspur proved their breadth of quality in attack rivals any frontline across the country, dispatching West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Admittedly, the Hammers were sorely out of shape, but it was still a triumph that has set the north Londoners back on track after capitulating against Brighton & Hove Albion before the October international break.

Tottenham players celebrate

There’s one man above all others who’s supercharging Postecoglou’s attack: Dejan Kulusevski.

Dejan Kulusevski's performance vs West Ham

Kulusevski has long been regarded as one of Tottenham’s most exciting players but he’s starting to hit his stride this season, with Postecoglou regularly unleashing the typical winger in a more central and dynamic midfield role.

It’s paying off handsomely, with Spurs still lacking fluency and defensive solidity but starting to look more refined and cohesive as a unit.

Against West Ham, this was showcased spectacularly, and Kulusevski was at the heart of his side’s football, awarded an 9/10 match rating by football.london’s Rob Guest, who hailed the Swede’s parity-restoring goal in the first half, his link-up play with skipper Heung-min Son, with his sky-high confidence threading it all together.

The 24-year-old is embracing his more talismanic role in Postecoglou’s system and, with James Maddison hooked at half-time as more purchase was sought, looks like the main man. He might even be shaping into the Lilywhites’ own version of Martin Odegaard.

Ange's own version of Odegaard

Kulusevski’s energy and application make him an indispensable member of the Tottenham team. His comparative raise in prolificness is merely a welcome bonus.

Pundit Graeme Souness once hailed Kulusevski as “De Bruyne-esque” but perhaps such praise could be more aptly attributed to that of the Arsenal captain.

FBref’s number-crunching model has revealed that Odegaard is one of Kulusevski’s most statistically similar midfielders, for both left-footers are natural goalscorers with a ball-carrying expertise and combative streak.

Odegaard has been named Arsenal’s Player of the Season for successive years and is one of the finest and most influential players in the Premier League, and it would be quite a thing for Postecoglou to fashion Kulusevski into a star of a similar ilk.

With two goals across his past three matches in the top flight, the Tottenham sensation will be hoping to sustain this searing-hot run of form and fire his outfit back into the Champions League and toward the deep end of a cup competition.

As you can see from the graphic above, Kulusevski is growing into one of Europe’s finest midfielders, and he could be a real difference-maker for his side across the coming months, perhaps rivalling Odegaard down the line for London’s finest occupant of the playmaking tag.

Spurs thought they had Eriksen's replacement, now he plays in League One

Arsenal are beginning to unleash their very own answer to Haaland

It's not very fair is, it? Come on Erling, these people have families. The rampant Norwegian is proving to be the usual source of chaos, chaos that once all is said and done will probably see Manchester City beat Arsenal to the Premier League title for the third year in a row.

Haaland is a robot, an alien, a footballing juggernaut who destroys everyone and everything in his wake.

As Arsenal slumped to a 1-1 draw with Brighton in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off, Man City responded in emphatic fashion. Well, their striker responded.

Pep Guardiola's main man was at it again at the London Stadium to down West Ham in brutal, mesmerising fashion.

Haaland's performance against West Ham

The Norway international's hat-trick against Ipswich Town the weekend prior felt inevitable. Kieran McKenna's men performed some admirable business in the transfer window but very little can prepare you for the onslaught of Haaland.

The Tractor Boys went 1-0 up but the powerhouse forward responded by knocking three goals past them. Well, he was at it again against West Ham on Saturday evening.

Another hat-trick was notched up to take his early season tally to seven goals in three outings. For anyone who doesn't have him in their fantasy team, quite frankly, what are you playing at?

This is an unstoppable beast and the way in which he took his trio of goals in the capital two days ago was freakish. The second was a rasping crunching effort that soared past the goalkeeper and the third, out of nowhere, was quite magnificent.

Haaland ran in behind and comfortably slotted the ball past substitute goalkeeper and former Arsenal man Lukasz Fabianski as if he wasn't even in the net.

So, good luck Gunners. Truly, good luck finding a way to beat Man City when they have him up front.

How do they respond? Well, despite not adding a centre-forward to their ranks over the summer, they are beginning to build quite the weapon up front.

Arsenal's answer to Haaland

Now, hear us out, but Kai Havertz does have similar attributes to Haaland.

He may not have the goalscoring prowess – although that is improving – but he has a lengthy build that ensures he is a nightmare for defenders, boasts remarkable strength and is left-footed.

That last one is rather tenuous, admittedly, but like we said, hear us out for a few minutes, he has come a long way since his blase attitude was said to be "like Mesut Ozil" by Paul Merson.

Standing at 6 foot 4, the £65m signing from Chelsea is actually the same height as City's no.9. So, there's the first box ticked.

Where else are they similar? Well, they've got that style of play that looks rather effortless. The German has already been compared to a figure like Dennis Bergkamp and it's clear to see why.

He may not be as graceful as the great Dutchman but like Haaland, that wirey frame and the long strides they possess come in handy when looking for two things; someone to hold the ball up and someone to regularly hassle defenders.

Until recently, Havertz had been playing as more of a false 9 in the Arsenal team. Yet, in 2024/25, he's been given the keys to become the leading man. The way he took his goal against Brighton on Saturday was Haaland-esque, racing onto a ball in behind and plonking the ball over Bart Verbruggen.

Stylistically there are also clear differences. Haaland has pace. Havertz isn't blessed hugely in that department. The numbers do tell us something interesting though, even if we can't quantify their biggest similarity; strength.

As we noted above, there are clear differences in some areas. Havertz is more creative, boasting more progressive passes per 90 minutes. There is a reason former teammate Roberto Hilbert once declared the Germany international has "some things Ozil had". This time we're comparing the two Germans in a positive light.

That said, they aren't really too dissimilar in the carrying department. They don't complete an awful number of passes per 90 minutes and defensively they've actually been relatively on par this term, leading the press with 0.67 tackles apiece.

There is little chance that Havertz ends up ending the campaign as prolific a goalscorer as Haaland but both of them, with their languid and rangy playstyles, will prove key in the destination of this season's Premier League title.
