West Ham make contact with ex-Everton manager to replace Graham Potter

Despite securing a much-needed 3-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest before the international break, West Ham United have still reportedly made contact to welcome a replacement for Graham Potter.

Latest on Graham Potter's West Ham future

After conceding eight goals in their first two Premier League games, before they conceded another three in a Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers, it was easy to fear for West Ham at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest had their own problems to think about, however. The public spat between Nuno Espírito Santo and Evangelos Marinakis looked far from over on the day and that potentially allowed West Ham to swoop in and pick up their first win of the season in convincing fashion.

It was the perfect way to enter the international break and one that may have saved Potter’s job. Whether it was a result that papered over the cracks or this is finally the start of things turning around under Potter is now the big question.

What should concern the manager is that a number of names have already been mooted as potential replacements, including Jose Mourinho. The former Chelsea manager was recently sacked by Fenerbahçe and needs no introduction to fans around the London Stadium.

It’s hard to argue against the idea that the self-proclaimed Special One would be a major upgrade on Potter. He is a serial winner by any means possible and is certainly capable of taking the Hammers from relegation candidates into a side competing for a place in the top half.

That said, Mourinho is not the only name on the reported shortlist, and it could even be a candidate that he knows incredibly well that replaces Potter in the near future.

West Ham make contact with Frank Lampard

According to Football Insider, West Ham have now made contact with Frank Lampard about replacing Potter. The Coventry City boss is enjoying life in the Championship and is finally back on track following difficult spells at Everton and Chelsea. Now, one way or another, the Premier League is calling.

Whilst the Premier League is a different challenge to the Championship, there’s no denying that 20 wins in 39 games is an incredibly impressive record.

The 47-year-old, for all the criticism that he received at Goodison Park, also has a successful relegation battle on his CV. If West Ham are dragged into a relegation scrap, then that experience will be needed more than ever.

Potter’s victory over Forest has at least put West Ham’s immediate search for a replacement on hold, but reported contact with Lampard suggests that he can’t afford another bad run of form after the international break.

Meanwhile, if the chance does come Lampard’s way then he must decide whether to leave Coventry mid-way through the Championship campaign.

Jayawardene says Bumrah is in 'good nick' after IPL comeback

“He’s disappointed not to get the win, but other than that, he looks fine. I think the pace was up, and the execution was good”

Bangar: Bumrah has the experience to deal with injury

Jasprit Bumrah was back at full tilt, executed his plans well, and faced no discomfort at the end of it all. That was head coach Mahela Jayawardene’s assessment after Mumbai Indians’ (MI) 12-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their IPL 2025 match on Monday. Bowling in a match for the first time since walking out of the New Year’s Test in Australia, Bumrah gave a good account of himself and returned figures of 0 for 29 in four overs in RCB’s total of 221 for 5.”I just spoke to him after the game and he looks in good nick,” Jayawardene said. “He’s disappointed [at losing] as well. He wanted a win when he came back. But other than that, he looks fine. I think the pace was up, the execution was good.”Bumrah linked up with MI on Saturday after BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (formerly National Cricket Academy) gave cleared him. He trained with the team on Sunday, bowling to batters for the first time in over three months, and then played his first competitive match. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar shared the new ball after MI opted to bowl and Bumrah was only brought on in the fourth over when RCB had raced to 33 for 1.Related

'Welcome, Mufasa' – No-nonsense Bumrah returns with typically no-nonsense Bumrah spell

“I think we got two swing bowlers, we need to give them that opportunity first up,” Jayawardene said about Bumrah not starting with the new ball. “Boom’s coming back from a three-month layoff as well. So we just wanted to ease him into the competition, but he bowled well and he controlled things really well. The more he starts playing, [getting] game time, he’ll get into it.”The last time he was playing a Test match, all of a sudden he’s playing a T20. So we need to understand that. The skills were brilliant but there are areas for us to improve.”Bumrah bowled one over in the powerplay, one in the middle overs and two at the death. He conceded just two boundaries – both sixes – in his spell and was the most economical bowler at the Wankhede Stadium across the two teams. MI conceded 52 in the last four overs; in the two overs Bumrah bowled then, he gave away just 14.”[Having Bumrah back] just gives us more options,” Jayawardene said. “Yesterday was his first day where he bowled to batsmen. From that confidence, that’s something that we lacked in the last few games. We have that as well, but we just need to put all these pieces together and execute a good game to give us confidence so that we can move on.”Bumrah linked up with MI on Saturday after BCCI’s Centre of Excellence gave him the all-clear•BCCIAs soon as Bumrah entered the field on Monday, he headed to the pitch. Standing at the pavilion end, he mimed bowling a few deliveries before marking his run-up at both ends alongside the other MI bowlers. After RCB’s innings ended, he was subbed out with Rohit Sharma playing as the Impact Player in the chase. Was Bumrah itching to cut loose after linking up with the squad?”Obviously, NCA has a programme that they have to go through, do all the fitness tests and make sure that he is in good shape,” Jayawardene said. “That applies to all Indian contracted players. Once he went through that, he had five-six good sessions as well, everything was cleared. The only thing he was lacking was game time. He hadn’t played actively.”That was something that he came and worked with us yesterday at the nets execution-wise. The experience, the skill that you saw today was pretty good. He bowled to some good players and probably had two or three bad balls in that spell. I’m pretty happy with that.”

Everton struck gold on "magnificent" star worth more than Grealish & Ndiaye

Everton have raced out of the blocks firing on all cylinders so far this season.

Sometimes, change is unwelcome, but it appears that many of the new signings that arrived through the door this summer have been worthwhile investments, with the Toffees picking up two victories from a possible three in the Premier League so far.

Jack Grealish is hogging the limelight in this regard, and rightly so, as David Moyes beams from ear to ear about the attacking talent he now has at his disposal, alongside the assist king.

Why Grealish is king of Everton's new-look attack

There’s no danger that the former Aston Villa man could be hurt on the international break, with the 29-year-old far removed from Thomas Tuchel’s England plans at this moment in time.

Never say never about him donning Three Lions white again, however, if his early, scintillating form for the Toffees is anything to go by, with a stunning four assists seeing him lead the early assist charts in the Premier League.

Such has been the Englishman’s form that he’s in line to be crowned one of the division’s best players in the league over the first three gameweeks of the campaign.

It would not be a surprise if Grealish got in on the goalscoring act with a few strikes of his own, too, with Iliman Ndiaye leading the way for Moyes and Co in terms of goals, away from the number 18’s creative prowess stealing headlines.

Following on from his heroics at Goodison Park last season – where he netted nine strikes in league action – Ndiaye has taken to Everton’s new home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium like a duck to water, having actually picked up the individual accolade of scoring the first-ever goal by a Toffees player at their fresh and modern home.

He also helped secure Everton’s second victory of the season when bagging at Molineux, with the £17m spent on the ex-Sheffield United winger’s services last year continuing to reap its rewards.

Despite that, Grealish undenidably feels like their best player at the moment, but remarkably, there is another standout figure in Moyes’ camp worth even more than both Ndiaye and the Toffees loanee, who will surely be another player the Scotsman can rely on to keep up Everton’s red-hot start.

Worth more than Grealish & Ndiaye: Everton have struck gold

There will be some worries on Moyes’ end regarding the leaky nature of his defence across these promising victories.

Indeed, two goals were shipped away at Wolves last time out in league action despite their lowly early league position, with the centre-back partnership of Michael Keane and James Tarkowski perhaps a little too weathered to ride out a full season together.

James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford

This is where Jarrad Branthwaite will come to the rescue when he’s back to full fitness, having unfortunately had to sit out the start of this season so far, owing to injury concerns.

Reports suggest he should be back by the end of September, and it will be a welcome return to the first-team fold for Moyes, with the Cumbrian titan starring last campaign under the ex-West Ham United manager’s guidance when relegation worries still loomed large on Merseyside.

Just two games back into Moyes’ second reign at the club, Branthwaite was heroically putting his body on the line during a 1-0 win away at Brighton and Hove Albion, winning a valiant four duels on the day, typical of his commanding duels won average for the entire campaign.

Hailed as “magnificent” by Alan Shearer when first making waves on Merseyside, it is incredible how quickly the 6-foot-5 warrior has become the first name on the teamsheet when fit, having originally only cost the Toffees a measly £1m to win from his local side Carlisle.

Now, off the back of being consistently imperious across 75 Premier League clashes and counting, his transfer worth has skyrocketed to a mighty £43m, according to Transfermarkt. Amazingly, Grealish is only worth around £24m as per the same source, while Ndiaye comes in at an even lower valuation of £19m.

While Moyes will undoubtedly be pleased with his side’s electric start, he will pray that this is a sign that they can compete near the top of the league all season long, rather than it being a flash-in-the-pan moment.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

With Branthwaite back in the team shortly, more staunch defensive performances should be on display, with even more wins to then hopefully write home about.

He’s Everton’s best defender and a European charge could well be on the way once he returns.

Watch out DCL: Leeds are now producing "one of England's best prospects"

For a free-flowing team that confidently strolled to the Championship title last season, Daniel Farke’s Leeds United have unfortunately misplaced their shooting boots in the Premier League so far.

Indeed, the entertaining Whites fired home a devastating 95 strikes in total last campaign, as 100 points were also tallied up.

Now, from their opening three games up a division, they have just a paltry single goal to shout about, with a mixed bag of four points next to their name.

Farke will just be praying it’s early-season nerves holding his wasteful team back, with lots more expected of Dominic Calvert-Lewin as he acclimatises to his new environment at Elland Road, after becoming synonymous with ex-employers Everton.

Calvert-Lewin's early Leeds struggles

After lining up for the Toffees 273 times across nine seasons, Calvert-Lewin walked away from Merseyside this summer for a fresh opportunity in West Yorkshire.

Everton did try to tempt the ex-Sheffield United striker to stay with a new, extended deal, but Farke and Co proved to be a more enticing next step, as the 11-time England international now attempts to recapture his best form in front of goal after an injury-ravaged few campaigns at Goodison Park.

Leeds will hope they can move past these recurring niggles and reawaken a clinical monster, with journalist Patrick Boyland once labelling the attacker as “outstanding” when he was scoring goals for fun at the Toffees.

In total, an impressive 71 goals would come Calvert-Lewin’s way at Everton, with 16 of those coming during just one Premier League season.

Yet, the early signs at the moment suggest that the Sheffield-born forward is bereft of confidence in front of goal, having endured a nightmare day at the office against Sheffield Wednesday recently.

Staring down the barrel of an embarrassing exit in the EFL Cup to Sheffield Wednesday, Farke would throw on Calvert-Lewin for the final 30 minutes of action, hopeful that he could be the difference-maker on his debut run-out.

Instead, he depressingly fluffed his lines whenever the pressure was ramped up, with four big chances spurned, before he also missed a penalty kick to hand the Owls a shock Cup win.

Farke could well feel it’s necessary to keep Calvert-Lewin on his toes now, knowing he’s still a little rusty, with a rising starlet perhaps pushed up for more first-team chances.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The Leeds prospect who could compete with Calvert-Lewin

Farke was the manager at the Elland Road helm who brought Archie Gray into the senior spotlight.

Gray would then go on to be a £40m sale to Tottenham Hotspur after seriously impressing throughout Leeds’ promotion-near miss.

Amazingly, the majority of his family members will be hoping for a similar rise for brother Harry Gray, who has already made waves in the first team picture.

With promotion all but wrapped up last season, the former Norwich City boss threw the 16-year-old sensation into the first-team mix, with a memorable eight-minute cameo handed to him against Stoke City in April.

It wasn’t just purely sentiment that gifted Gray a chance to strut his stuff with the likes of Manor Solomon and the other promotion heroes, however, with the teenager already tipped to have an immensely bright future in the game by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Indeed, he boldly stated that he is “one of England’s best prospects in his generation” after briefly lining up against the Potters.

The table above proves that Mattinson’s words aren’t just hyperbole either, with the 16-year-old already up to seven goals from ten games for the U21s at Premier League 2 level, away from collecting a lethal 15 strikes overall at youth level.

Calvert-Lewin could only dream of being in such a rich vein of goalscoring form himself, with a weak three strikes next to his name in the main Premier League last season.

Of course, just for his experience alone, Leeds will continue to try and get a tune out of their new marksman.

But, in the long run, do not rule out Gray making strides in the senior picture, having also been previously branded an “unbelievable” talent by former Leeds favourite Dominic Matteo.

'Will ruin his career!' – Midfielder warned against joining Chelsea or Manchester United in brutal swipe at struggling Premier League duo

Marseille midfielder Arthur Vermeeren has been warned against joining Premier League giants Chelsea or Manchester United, as he has been told that he would ruin his career if he ever moves to either of the English clubs. After failing to make a mark at RB Leipzig, Vermeeren joined the Ligue 1 giants on loan towards the end of the summer transfer window.

Vermeeren was hailed as 'next Iniesta'

Vermeeren established himself as one of the brightest prospects in world football during his time at Royal Antwerp before being signed by Atletico Madrid in January 2024 in a deal worth €25million (£21m/$29m). The Belgian wonderkid, however, failed to live up to his potential at Atletico and was eventually sold to RB Leipzig after just one year. Unfortunately, Vermeeren's form did not pick up in Germany as well, as the 20-year-old was sent out on loan this summer to Marseille.

Speaking to , analyst Marc Degryse said: "What Vermeeren absolutely mustn’t do is go to a club like Chelsea or Manchester United, where they buy thirty or forty players and then loan you out. Arthur Vermeeren will ruin his career if he does that!"

English clubs have been linked with Vermeeren

Premier League sides Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly shown interest in signing the midfielder, while Manchester United and Barcelona, at one point, were linked with a move for the young Belgium international.

Spin twins: Matt Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon shared 30 wickets in two Tests against Sri Lanka•Getty Images

The start of 2025 is a period in Matt Kuhnemann’s career that he will never forget. From fears a broken thumb would scupper his chances of a Test recall, he then bowled Australia to victory in Sri Lanka only to be faced with his action being reported. But he came through the ICC process with flying colours, finished the season with a five-wicket haul and has now earned a maiden central contract which cements him as Australia’s No. 2 red-ball spinner behind Nathan Lyon.Related

Kuhnemann took 16 wickets in the two Tests against Sri Lanka taking his overall tally to 25 in five matches at 22.20.He will be part of the Test tour of West Indies in June and is a strong chance of featuring with Lyon in at least some of those matches in Barbados, Grenada and Jamaica depending on the surfaces.”He’s shown an incredible amount of resilience,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “Performing as well as he did in Sri Lanka and then having the scrutiny around his action, and having to go through that process, to bouncing back and finishing the year really well with Tassie.”Looking at what’s coming up, we don’t have any subcontinent tours but we think his skill set could be useful in the West Indies. Someone who’s not had a whole heap of international exposure, we’ve been really pleased with the way he’s performed when he’s got his opportunities.”Lyon, who towards the end of the Sri Lanka series termed Kuhnemann the team’s best bowler, recalled being heartbroken as he sat next to him on the flight home after the news of his action had emerged.”I’m happy it’s all cleared, it’s all done and doesn’t need to be spoken about any more,” Lyon said earlier in the week. “He hasn’t done anything wrong. I thought he’s been absolutely exceptional, especially the way he went out there and really bowled us to victory.”I was pretty heartbroken in a sense. I actually flew home with him. He was pretty gutted when he was talking to me about what he had to do and he was pretty nervous. For him to have his name cleared, I could be nothing but proud for Matt and the way he’s gone about it.”After West Indies, Kuhnemann’s international opportunities are likely to be limited but he shapes as a crucial figure for the 2027 Border-Gavaskar series in India – it was on the corresponding tour in 2023 where he made his Test debut and bagged 5 for 16 in his second Test at Indore. However, he is also a potentially intriguing option for next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka should Australia want a specialist left-arm spinner. “I think he can play other formats,” Bailey said. “The contract side of things is probably a lens to where he sits in our eyes at the moment, in the red-ball space he’s done incredibly well.”Australia are unlikely to consider two spinners for a home Test, but even if Lyon was injured during next summer’s Ashes Kuhnemann may not necessarily be next in line in those conditions. The selectors could consider an offspinner, either Todd Murphy, who was dropped off the contract list, or Western Australia’s Corey Rocchiccioli, who might be a better fit on bouncier surfaces.Rocchiccioli finished the Sheffield Shield season strongly with a career-best seven-wicket haul at the Gabba and eight wickets in the final game against Victoria at the WACA.All three spinners – Kuhnemann, Murphy and Rocchiccioli – will likely get the chance to tour India later this year with Australia A understood to have a series lined up that will include a pair of four-day matches against India A.

Arsenal are brewing a right-footed Dowman in Hale End's "insane" 17-year-old

Arsenal are a club with a proud history of developing and platforming some of the most exciting youngsters in English football.

In generations past, the club have been the starting point for legendary superstars like Ashley Cole, Ray Parlour, and Tony Adams.

Then, in more recent years, the likes of Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, and Myles Lewis-Skelly have forced their way into the team.

The most recent name to join the list of extraordinary talents who have made the jump from Hale End to the Emirates is Max Dowman, and it already looks like the academy is producing another young talent in his mould.

Why Max Dowman could become an England and Arsenal superstar

If it weren’t for his fellow Hale Ender, Nwaneri, Dowman would have become the youngest Premier League player in history when he took to the pitch against Leeds United last month.

However, unlike the 18-year-old, the Gunners’ latest academy gem has remained a part of the first team squad, and instead of waiting over a year to make his second league appearance, he had to wait just a week.

Moreover, it didn’t come at the end of a comfortable drubbing of a newly promoted side; it came away to Liverpool, when the team were in desperate need of an equaliser, and if that doesn’t tell you just how highly Mikel Arteta and Co rate the youngster, nothing will.

It’s easy to understand why the club believe him to have such a high ceiling, as the Chelmsford-born gem has an outrageous record at junior level and has made a habit of playing well beyond his years.

For example, in just 25 appearances for the U18s, totalling 2104 minutes, he managed to put the ball in the back of the net 20 times and provided ten assists for good measure.

In other words, the teenage phenomenon averaged 1.2 goal involvements per game, or every 70.13 minutes, while playing in an age group well beyond his own.

He’s also made quite a name for himself in the international setup, becoming the youngest player ever to feature for England’s U19s when he came off the bench to face Ukraine last week.

Overall, even though it’s notoriously difficult to predict a youngster’s future, it feels like Dowman is heading to the very top in the not-too-distant future.

So, it’s more than good news that Hale End may already have a right-footed version of him ready to make his own way into the team in the coming years.

Arsenal's right-footed Dowman

Even after the likes of Nwaneri, Lewis-Skelly, and Dowman, Arsenal appear to have a number of genuinely exciting prospects emerging from the Hale End ranks, including Mari Solomon and Andre Harriman-Annous.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Yet, when it comes to someone who could be seen as a right-footed Dowman, it’s impossible to look past Alex Marciniak.

The 17-year-old Welshman may not quite have the output to match the now-first-teamer at the moment, but there are several apparent similarities between the pair and plenty of encouraging signs.

First of all, while the “insane” Cardiff-born talent, as dubbed by academy expert Will Balsam, is primarily viewed as an attacking midfielder at present, he has shown an impressive level of positional versatility over the last year or so.

He has played out on the left wing, in left midfield, and has even made an appearance in defensive midfield, so, like Dowman, he could come in and play wherever the manager needs him.

Second, the teenage gem has a similar ability to glide past opposition defenders, thanks in large part to his “above-average technique”, Rising stars XI put it, and his “tidy footwork,” per Balsam.

Moreover, even though he hasn’t got the numbers of Dowman just yet, there is every chance he could by the end of the year.

Hale End prodigy left Arsenal for £0, now he's better than Gyokeres & Isak

Arsenal could have saved a lot of hassle in the transfer market with a decision at Hale End.

ByMatt Dawson Sep 7, 2025

For example, he’s already scored a goal and provided an assist in three appearances for the U18s, has “an eye for goal”, and, according to Balsam, “has a big season ahead of him.”

Ultimately, even though he still has plenty of developing to do, Marciniak looks like he could be the next Hale Ender to make the jump to the first team, and in the process become Arteta’s right-footed Dowman.

Bad news for Man Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea as €100m target Kenan Yildiz nears decision on future amid Juventus contract talks

Juventus have launched an ambitious two-year plan aimed at winning the Champions League and Serie A . The club’s top priority is securing the long-term future of Turkish prodigy Kenan Yildiz, whose contract renewal until 2030 is central to the project. Backed by a capital increase and extending key players like Khephren Thuram, the vision signals Juve's firm intent to reclaim their elite status.

Comolli’s two-year Vision for Juventus

After years of cautious rebuilding, Juventus are entering a new phase under general manager Damien Comolli. Comolli’s two-year project to transform the Turin side into challengers for European and domestic trophies. The summer signings – Edon Zhegrova, Jonathan David, Lois Openda and Joao Mario – signalled the start of this transformation. But Comolli’s true work begins with securing the future of players who represent the club’s identity and ambition. At the heart of that plan stands Yildiz, the 20-year-old Turkish sensation whose future has been the subject of intense speculation.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesYildiz's contract extension is Juventus' priority

Yildiz’s journey at Juventus has been nothing short of remarkable. Since breaking into the first team, the young forward has amassed over 90 senior appearances, scoring 18 goals and registering 15 assists. In the 2024–25 season alone, Yildiz registered 12 goals and nine assists across all competitions, earning his place as a cornerstone of the squad. His performance in the Club World Cup and Serie A has drawn praise from both management and fans, with coach Igor Tudor labelling him “a complete modern attacker.”

Juventus’ management knows that keeping Yildiz is crucial to their project as the club had reportedly received offers from Chelsea in the summer window while other Manchester United and Arsenal are also monitoring his situation. According to , Talks over a renewal until 2030, with an option for another year, are progressing steadily. The club’s offer stands at around €4.5 million per season, bonuses included and with an option to extend it further by a year, while Yildiz’s entourage is asking for slightly more. Both sides are confident of finding common ground soon, as the player’s preference is clear, he wants to stay in Turin.

Comolli’s broader project plans

Comolli’s work doesn’t end with Yildiz. His larger mission is to tie down the players who form the backbone of the team’s future. Among them is Thuram, considered “untouchable” and set for a contract extension until 2030. Thuram’s renewal reflects the club’s long-term faith in his partnership with Manuel Locatelli, forming a midfield engine designed to last a decade.

Similar renewal talks are underway with Federico Gatti, Andrea Cambiaso and Weston McKennie, ensuring depth and continuity across key positions. The Serie A club are also planning smart market moves for January, targeting a right-back and a rotational midfielder to ease the burden on their core squad. Names like Jordan Teze, Rapahel Guerreiro and Arnau Martinez have emerged as potential options.
