Towering Leaning, dogged Finch set Kent up for high-scoring draw

Kent survived some occasional alarms to bat out a draw with Worcestershire on the final day of their Vitality County Championship at Canterbury. The captains shook hands just after five o’clock, with Kent on 146 for four in their second innings, still 65 runs behind Worcestershire’s mammoth first innings core of 618 for seven declared.Ben Gibbon claimed two for 38, but the visitors used nine different bowlers during Kent’s second innings and failed to break down some stiff middle order resistance, spearheaded by Harry Finch who was unbeaten on 48.Earlier Jack Leaning made an unbeaten 179 as Kent were all out for 407 in their first innings, still 211 behind, with Joe Leach taking three for 37 and Matthew Waite three for 51.A draw was widely expected before the start of play, after three days that begged a number of questions. There are many worse places to be than the St Lawrence on day four of a meandering county championship game, but when the balance is tilted so far in favour of the batters, just how useful an exercise is it when it comes to preparing battle-hardened, subcontinent-ready cricketers? And is a neutered four-day game just collateral damage?Worcestershire didn’t bowl at all badly, but took just six wickets during the whole of day three. Kent’s analysts said their bowlers were hitting exactly the same lengths they’d hit during the win at Old Trafford, but it took them five sessions to take seven wickets. There was competing pessimism beforehand. Away pessimists thought the pitch would win, while their home counterparts worried about mental lapses: you shouldn’t lose 12 wickets in a day on this surface, but that didn’t mean you wouldn’t.The visitors needed an early breakthrough but Nathan Gilchrist lasted for nearly an hour on his way to 12, before he eventually tried to hook Leach and was caught, at the third attempt, by Waite on the square leg boundary, perhaps lured by some inventive field settings. When Kashif Ali bowled Matt Parkinson for two to wrap up the innings, Leaning was left unbeaten after a 403-ball innings that lasted nine-hours and 48 minutes, the second-longest recorded innings by time in Kent history after David Fulton’s ten and a half hours vs Yorkshire at Maidstone in 1998.There were still 73 overs remaining however and the loss of Zak Crawley early in Kent’s second innings suggested the game might yet flicker into life.Crawley lasted 15 balls before Jason Holder had him caught behind, leaving the England man with just 67 runs from six sub-optimal county innings this season. It was 18 for one at lunch, during which the temperature dropped and clouds emerged. Gibbon then strangled Compton down the leg side for 11 and Nathan Smith had Joe Denly lbw for 10, reducing Kent to three for 36 with 55.4 overs remaining.Bell-Drummond and Finch calmed home nerves by surviving till tea, at which point it was 104 for 3 but visiting hopes flared again when Gibbon clean-bowled the former, off-stump, for 41.Evison joined Finch however and took the sting out of the contest, batting for nearly an hour and facing 47 balls on his way to an unbeaten eight. When the occasional leggie Rob Jones became the ninth bowler Worcestershire to try and break through it was a sign the end was nigh and the teams eventually shook hands with potentially 16 overs remaining.

Benjamin Sesko: Why Man Utd are spending up to £74m on the Slovenian speed merchant who Arsenal backed away from

The Red Devils have beaten Newcastle to the signing of the RB Leipzig hitman, who models himself on Erling Haaland and Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Manchester United first set their eyes upon Benjamin Sesko when he was just 16 years old, and even had the chance to snap him up for a pittance. They didn't take it, though, instead leaving Red Bull Salzburg to sign the Slovenian teenager in the summer of 2019 for just €2.5 million.

Meanwhile in 2022, Erik ten Hag's first summer in charge, the Red Devils had another look at Sesko, but again balked at the price, which had by then risen to €24m for a player who had only one season of top-flight football under his belt in the Austrian Bundesliga. Instead, Sesko agreed to jump ship to fellow Red Bull franchise RB Leipzig, although he did not make the move until the following year, which is when United signed Rasmus Hojlund for up to £72m.

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to miss out on a promising and prolific striker once may be regarded as a misfortune, to miss out twice looks like carelessness. But six years after first failing to sign the player once billed as the next Erling Haaland, United have, at the third time of asking, finally secured a deal to get Sesko to Old Trafford.

Having organised a secret trip to Germany, led by head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who brought Sesko to Leipzig when he was the Bundesliga side's technical director, to try and get the deal done, United are now set to pay a huge price for their earlier indecision, with Leipzig having accepted an offer of an initial £66.5m ($89m), plus £7.5m ($10m) in achievable add-ons, for the 22-year-old, who was also being pursued by Newcastle.

Yet, despite the big fee and some concern that United could be about to make the same mistake they made with Hojlund by signing a costly 'project' in favour of a proven Premier League striker like Ollie Watkins, there is a lot of excitement about the striker heading to the red side of Manchester and completing Ruben Amorim's new-look attack…

  • Getty

    Where it all began

Sesko received his early football education in his hometown of Radece and began making waves in Slovenian football when he was barely a teenager, as he scored a stunning 59 goals in 23 matches for second division outfit Krsko's Under-15s side in the 2017-18 season. He subsequently joined two-time national champions NK Domzale, but far bigger clubs came calling just a year later as Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund all expressed their interest. So too did United, who tabled a bid of £1m for the then-16-year-old.

But it was Salzburg, who a year earlier had snapped up another precociously talented and physically imposing striker in Haaland, who appealed the most to Sesko and his representatives.

"The biggest clubs in Europe tried to get him. The interest in him was huge; I have never seen anything like it before," said Sesko's agent Elvis Basanovic at the time. "We had a lot of offers from really big clubs. Had we decided on the money, Benjamin would have moved to England or Italy. But we decided to look at the bigger picture and the Salzburg project."

Unlike Haaland, however, Sesko was considered too young and raw for the Salzburg first team upon arrival, and while the Norwegian was tearing it up in the top-flight and scoring against the likes of Liverpool in the Champions League, the Slovenian was drafted into Salzburg's reserve side, FC Liefering, who play in the Austrian second division. Sesko initially struggled to cope with the jump from youth to senior football and scored only one goal in 15 appearances in his first campaign. However, he got to grips with the level soon enough and netted 21 times in his second season.

    The big break

Sesko became Slovenia's youngest-ever player when he made his debut in June 2021 against North Macedonia, the day after his 18th birthday, and four months later, he became his country's youngest-ever scorer when he struck against Malta. That same year he was promoted to Salzburg's first team for the 2021-22 season, and at the end of the campaign he secured a move to Leipzig, despite only scoring five goals in the Austrian top flight.

He considerably improved on those numbers in his final season at Salzburg, scoring 16 league goals and setting up a further four, and by the time he left Austria for Germany, Sesko had averaged a goal or an assist every two games.

After an underwhelming debut season at Leipzig, Sesko suddenly hit a ruthless vein of form, scoring in each of his side's final seven league games. He also became the youngest player to score in seven consecutive games in the Bundesliga as his goal glut helped fire Leipzig to a fourth-placed finish in the table and a return to the Champions League.

  • How it's going

Sesko's hot streak increased the hype around him ahead of Euro 2024, although he underwhelmed at the tournament, failing to score in any of Slovenia's four games while missing two big chances in the last-16 tie against Portugal, which his side eventually lost on penalties.

Back on the domestic front, highlights of his second season at Leipzig included doubles against Juventus and Augsburg as well as a long-range trivela against Bayern Munich. He also provided an assist as Leipzig beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 to end the then Bundesliga champions' 43-game unbeaten run. The season ended in disappointment, however, as Leipzig finished sixth in the league and failed to qualify for European football for the first time in nine years.

There was some disappointment over Sesko's season too – he scored 13 league goals compared to 14 strikes in his debut campaign despite starting an additional 13 matches. Nonetheless, there was big expectation that he would make a big-money move in the summer, one year after signing a long-term deal with Leipzig which protected his value.

Arsenal were seen as the main candidates to buy him, but instead opted for Viktor Gyokeres, leaving United and Newcastle to battle for his signature. And though the Magpies offered more money than the Red Devils, the lure of playing at Old Trafford was enough to convince Sesko to join Amorim's project at United.

    Biggest strengths

Sesko is an ideal build for a striker, standing at 6'4 (193cm) and boasting huge physical strength. He also has electric pace, famously clocking the same top speed as Kylian Mbappe when he was breaking through at Salzburg.

His pace and power makes him a formidable force running in between the lines and onto through balls, while Sesko also has impressive dribbling ability for a player of his size. The forward's ball-striking ability, which has led to him scoring a large number of long-range goals, also stands out.

"He’s extremely quick, has a great jump on him and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goal-scorer, who despite his height, is mobile and technically strong," is how Vivell described Sesko when unveiling him as a new signing for Leipzig. "His abilities make him a special player with a special profile."

'Will try & match him' – Marcus Rashford told he's capable of topping Lamine Yamal’s output during Barcelona loan from Man Utd

Marcus Rashford is capable of bettering Lamine Yamal’s output at Barcelona and “will try and match him in every way”, says Wes Brown.

England international Rashford finds himself in Catalonia after enduring a humbling tumble down the pecking order at Manchester United. Having once been the star boy at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old forward is now out of sight and mind.

A season-long loan at Barca has been sanctioned, which includes the option for a permanent transfer in 2026. Rashford is determined to prove his worth, as he aims to line up alongside 18-year-old wonderkid Yamal.

WHAT BROWN SAID

Rashford has posted 30-plus goal contributions in the past and, speaking in association with , ex-United defender Brown told GOAL when asked if he can top Yamal's numbers in 2025-26: “Marcus has got the experience to do that. Talent-wise, you have to say Yamal is a different breed. Marcus will try and match him in every way, talking about players in his own team. They play a little bit different. I’m sure Marcus will want to show everyone at Barcelona, and himself, what he can do.

“Comparing Yamal and Marcus, they are just a little bit different. Marcus is a bit older now, but you still look at how he is – how his physique is, how he plays his game, he’s still quick, very fit. He will be trying to do exactly what he did at Manchester United over the years. Yamal is an up-and-coming superstar, he’s got the ability that you don’t see often and he’s doing it at the highest level at the moment.”

Brown added on the ability that Rashford is now working alongside: “Yamal is unbelievable. He’s a talent that is in the Messi mould, the Ronaldo mould. You can see it there. Will he do it for many years? You hope so.

“Raphinha as well, he has stepped up after leaving Leeds. We thought he was a good player but it was whether you can do it at that higher level. It’s a big challenge. There are really good individuals there. They will be excited about their season. Yamal, for me, is probably the brightest star among everyone.”

Rashford has already been among the goals for Barca in pre-season and Brown said when pressed on whether a lost spark will be rekindled with the Blaugrana: “He looks sharp. I will always watch Marcus wherever he is, but he looks sharp. He’s starting as well. It will be interesting to see.

“He’s a good player. Marcus needs to get his head down and really perform for Barcelona. What a team to be able to do that for. Yes, there will be a lot of eyes on him this year to see how he does, and hopefully he’s focused.

“Marcus has got the ability to be able to really shine at that club and show what he is all about and what he can do. There are not many people that don’t wish him good luck. You want him to do well.

“Over the years he has been fantastic for United. The last couple of years have not been brilliant. If you have a fall out with the manager, it’s not ideal. It happens a lot in football and now he’s moved on. He came to Man United as a young footballer who wanted to play for Man United. He did that, won trophies, and you just wish him all the best.”

Nottingham Forest reportedly hold talks with AC Milan over transfer for USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah

Nottingham Forest have reportedly opened talks with AC Milan over the transfer of U.S. men's national team midfielder Yunus Musah, according to The Athletic. Club talks are taking place, and if an agreement is struck, personal terms are not thought to be an issue between the two parties.

Musah, 22, has made 80 appearances for Milan across his two seasons at the club and has featured regularly across preseason for them ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Napoli were reported to have shown interest in Musah in June. Although a move never came to fruition, various reports indicated that Antonio Conte's side is still keeping tabs on him as the transfer window comes to a close. Now, with Forest also vying for his signature, it could be a race to see who gets the deal over the line.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Forest have already made four first-team additions to their squad this summer, and manager Nuno Espirito Santo's side is now looking to add a fifth in the midfield. Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz has been a name mentioned, but Musah is also now a player they are looking at. Bologna’s Dan Ndoye, Botafogo duo Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha, and goalkeeper Angus Gunn have all signed otherwise.

Milan, meanwhile, is beginning a new era this season under the leadership of Max Allegri. They also appointed a new sporting director in Igli Tare, who spoke on Musah earlier this summer, praising him but suggesting he might not be a fit under Allegri.

“I consider Musah an excellent player, but we are looking for profiles with characteristics that fit the project we have with coach Allegri," he explained. “We are seeking deep-lying midfielders for a three-man midfield. Musah doesn’t have these characteristics. He can play in a two or three-man midfield but with different characteristics. This is the real reason why we want to do something different.”

Musah has represented the USMNT 47 times since making his senior debut, age 17. He started every match for the USA at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

‘Loyalty has really gone’ – Alexander Isak urged to continue demanding Liverpool transfer as Michail Antonio tells Newcastle striker to ‘better himself’ with move

Recently released West Ham striker Antonio has expressed his sympathy for Isak, who has requested to leave Newcastle. Amid ongoing interest from Liverpool, the 35-year-old has suggested the Sweden international does not owe the Magpies hierarchy anything and to do the best thing for his career.

    WHAT ANTONIO SAID

He told : "People are gonna love it or gonna hate what I'm gonna say, but I'm gonna say either way. As a player, loyalty in the game has really gone. Obviously, I was at West Ham for 10 years, that [loyalty] doesn't really last anymore, and I feel rightly so, because end of the day, clubs no longer treat players like they used to either. Why should the player be loyal to a club? I understand being loyal to fans, but being loyal to a club when he's going to try and better himself and better his life and try and achieve things that he's not going to achieve at another club."

Antonio added: "We are meat to them. As soon as we start going stale, it's time to sell or throw away. It's all about money, and how much money can they make [for] the club? If a club is going to think about the money side of things, why shouldn't a player?

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has opened the door for an Isak exit but the Carabao Cup holders are hoping to find a replacement for him before entertaining a Liverpool transfer. For Antonio, he said this days after his 10-year spell at West Ham came to an end, with the veteran not getting a contract extension eight months after his horror car crash. Like all elite sport, football can be a ruthless business.
