Neste caso as substituições fizeram crescer o time.

– Começamos a controlar o círculo central.

Starc shatters Cummins' record for most expensive player at IPL auction

ODI World Cup performers and uncapped Indians were in big in demand at IPL 2024 auction

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Dec-20234:17

Starc: ‘It’s a bit of a shock to be honest’

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc has shattered the record for the most expensive player at an IPL auction after being bought by Kolkata Knight riders for INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.). He surpassed the winning bid of INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.) that Sunrisers Hyderabad had made for Pat Cummins, Australia’s ODI World Cup winning captain, less than two hours earlier at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai.Starc came up for bidding in the first set for fast bowlers – the fourth set of the day – and the battle for him began between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. However, it was swiftly taken over by Gujarat Titans and KKR, the only franchises with more than INR 30 crore left in their purse at that point, and KKR won the final bid.The last time Starc featured in an IPL auction was in 2018 when KKR had signed him for INR 9.4 crore. He didn’t play that season, though, because of injury; he hasn’t played the IPL since 2015, in fact.”I’ve probably prioritised international cricket firstly for a long time whilst having a bit of a taste of IPL and Big Bash in Australia,” Starc said after his bid. “I’ve always held firm that I’ve wanted to play my best cricket for Australia and make myself available for Australia where I can. At the same time, the temptation to go back to IPL and how exciting it is to be involved in such a great tournament, big names, big players, big stages -it’s too hard to pass up. There’s a place to play all of it. It’s just being mindful and putting the work ethic into being able to do all of it.”Related

As it happened – IPL 2024 auction

Before Starc’s record bid, Sunrisers had spent INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.) to sign Cummins, staving off competition from Royal Challengers Bangalore to get their man. Cummins’ price had surpassed the record of INR 18.50 crore that Punjab Kings had paid for England allrounder Sam Curran at the 2023 IPL auction. Cummins had skipped the 2023 IPL to focus on international cricket; his previous highest auction price was INR 15.50 crore, when KKR had signed him in 2020.”Pumped to be joining SRH for the upcoming IPL season,” Cummins said after he was sold. “I’ve heard a lot about the Orange Army, I’ve played at Hyderabad a few times and always loved it, so can’t wait to get started. Great to see another Aussie in Trav Head over there as well. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun this season, and hopefully plenty of success.”Sunrisers head coach Daniel Vettori said they were able to spend that much on Cummins because they already had most bases covered. “Someone else desperately wanted him as well, that’s why he got pushed to that high number,” Vettori said. “Because our team is relatively settled and we have the budget, and we have already picked up Travis Head and [Wanindu] Hasaranga, we felt like we’d covered most things that we wanted at the auction, so we had the ability to spend that much.”ODI World Cup performers get big paydaysNew Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, Australia batter Travis Head, South Africa allrounder Gerald Coetzee, and Sri Lanka quick Dilshan Madushanka landed IPL deals on the back of impressive performances in the recent ODI World Cup in India.Mitchell was fiercely fought for by Capitals, Punjab and Chennai Super Kings, and was finally bought for INR 14 crore by CSK after entering the auction at a base price of INR 1 crore. Ravindra was also bought by CSK for INR 1.8 crore.CSK had also wanted to buy Head, the Player of the Match in the ODI World Cup semi-final and final, but lost him to Sunrisers, who signed him for INR 6.8 crore. Both Coetzee (INR 5 crore) and Madushanka (INR 4.6 crore) were signed by Mumbai Indians for a total of INR 9.6 crore – these were their first two buys at the auction.Afghanistan allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai also found a home at Titans, alongside his countrymen Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Uncapped Indians earn big bucksUP top-order batter Sameer Rizvi, Jharkhand wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra and Vidarbha middle-order batter Shubham Dubey, three of the players in ESPNcricinfo’s picks for most in-demand uncapped Indian players at the auction, earned big IPL deals.Dubey went first, with Capitals going after him with intent, but he eventually got sold to Royals for INR 5.8 crore. Rizvi’s name came up not long after, and if Dubey’s fee was the highest paid for an uncapped batter with no IPL experience, topping the INR 5.25 Punjab paid for Shahrukh Khan in 2021, the record didn’t last long – Rizvi earned INR 8.40 crore after CSK beat off Titans and Capitals for his services.Kushagra, for a while, threatened to top Rizvi’s bid, but Capitals got him for INR 7.20 crore after fighting off competition from CSK and Titans. A scrap for Shahrukh was expected, and there was one between Punjab – who had released him prior to the auction – and Titans. His price soared until it stopped at INR 7.40 crore, with Titans getting the big-hitting middle-order batter.Titans also tried to buy back left-arm quick Yash Dayal, who eventually went to RCB for INR 5 crore. Titans, however, picked up another left-arm quick Sushant Mishra for INR 2.2 crore, while left-arm M Siddharth went to LSG for INR 2.4 crore. One of the biggest surprises came late in the auction when the uncapped 21-year old Robin Minz, a wicketkeeper from Jharkhand with a base price of INR 20 lakh, was up for bidding. Four teams wanted him, first CSK and MI, and then SRH, before he was eventually sold for INR 3.6 crore to the Titans. An aggressive batter from Gumla, Minz has not played any domestic T20 cricket. One of his three coaches is Chanchal Bhattacharya, who also coached MS Dhoni. Minz idolises Dhoni and was selected for a Mumbai Indians camp earlier this year. The surprise big buysThe 2024 auction had begun with a surprise, when West Indies T20 captain Rovman Powell was signed for INR 7.4 crore by Rajasthan Royals, who spent more than half their auction purse on one player. Powell’s previous auction price was INR 2.8 crore, which Capitals paid for him in the 2022 auction.West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was also hotly fought for by CSK, Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and RCB. He had been released by Titans, who had paid INR 2.4 crore for him in the 2022 auction, and was signed for INR 11.50 crore by RCB, who needed an overseas fast bowler after having released Josh Hazlewood, Wayne Parnell and David Willey.Australian left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who plays for Brisbane Heat in the BBL, was another big surprise buy during the accelerated round towards the end of the auction. Having entered the auction at a base price of INR 50 lakh, Johnson’s price skyrocketed as Capitals and Titans bid for him. He eventually went for INR 10 crore to Titans, who needed an overseas fast bowler as back-up for Josh Little. Having lost Johnson to Titans, the Capitals picked up Australian quick Jhye Richardson shortly after for INR 5 crore. After picking up overseas quicks Coetzee and Madhushanka, Mumbai bought a third overseas fast bowler in 29-year old Sri Lankan Nuwan Thushara, who has played five T20 internationals. KKR and RCB began the bidding for him, but MI eventually won the bid at INR 4.8 crore.South African batter Rilee Rossouw had gone unsold when he came up for bidding in the early part of the auction but he was in big demand during the accelerated round at the end of the day. Capitals had bought Rossouw for INR 4.6 crore at the 2023 auction and then released him, but they entered the bidding for him once again and took the price up towards INR 8 crore, at which point they lost him to Punjab.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

How did the capped Indian players fare? The most expensive Indian player at the 2024 IPL auction was fast bowler Harshal Patel. The bidding for him began between Titans and Punjab, and then between Punjab and LSG, before he was finally sold to Punjab for INR 11.75 crore.Allrounder Shardul Thakur (INR 4 crore) will return for his second stint at CSK, who signed him for INR 4 crore. The last time Thakur had been sold at the auction, he had gone for INR 10.75 crore to Capitals in 2022.Fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi were also in high demand. SRH and Capitals tried to sign Umesh but Titans eventually did so for INR 5.8 crore. Mavi became LSG’s first buy at the 2024 auction, when they outbid RCB by spending nearly half their remaining purse to sign him for INR 6.4 crore.Jaydev Unadkat, who once commanded a bid of INR 11.4 crore in the 2018 auction, was sold for INR 1.6 crore to Sunrisers. The steal dealsSunrisers picked up Sri Lanka legspinning allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga at his base price of INR 1.5 crore as a like-for-like replacement for Adil Rashid, whom they had released. The last time Hasaranga had been sold at the 2022 auction, RCB had paid INR 10.75 crore for him.Capitals managed to sign England batter Harry Brook for INR 4 crore; Brook had been signed by Sunrisers for INR 13.25 crore last year and subsequently released after an unremarkable maiden IPL season.

PSG pummelling proves Real Madrid's Galacticos are miles behind Europe's elite sides: Xabi Alonso has a huge job on his hands to turn Los Blancos around

The Spanish giants were played off the park in their Club World Cup semi-final, highlighting the gap between them and the European champions

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The world Fabian Ruiz used was “completeness.”

It was full time of PSG’s 4-0 beat down of Real Madrid in the Club World Cup, and he knew what his team had done. This was a comprehensive victory, the kind that seldom happens in any semi final – never mind in a major tournament against such a big club. But the Parisians were good value for every goal, entirely justified in the score line. There was no luck here, no points of controversy, no isolated situations that might have changed the flow, course or vibes of the game. PSG had absolutely battered Los Blancos.

The win served as a seminal moment in a year full of them. PSG have made fools of pretty much every other big club in Europe at this point. To them, Madrid is another scalp, another big team taken down. This doesn't even feel .

But the Madrid perspective is far more damning. This loss proved just how far off they are from the very best in Europe. Los Blancos so often talk about how they are the biggest club in the world. It's an assertion that they are usually able to back up with performances. But here, they looked like a shadow of a top class team, a work in progress trying to play with the global elite – and failing miserably.

  • AFP

What the Club World Cup meant

There was a sense that this meant something bigger for Florentino Perez. They spent the season being ritually bloody nosed by Europe, comfortably second best to Barcelona in La Liga, and far off the pace in the Champions League. This tournament, silly to some, was a chance for Los Blancos to reassert themselves as the best team in club football.

And there's certainly something to be said for that. The CWC can be mocked, disparaged, and cast aside as a Gianni Infantino vanity project. But at the end of the day, the winner is still a world champion that gets to lift a very heavy, very shiny trophy. That feels real.

It's the kind of thing Madrid like. If times are hard, if results are bad, if vibes are poor, they can always point to a trophy cabinet that is absolutely packed. That, of course, comes with its faults. There is no such thing as being second best for them (third is unthinkable.) Every Blancos loss comes with an inquest, every win is almost criticized for not being perfect enough. Referees are blamed for losses. There is, more broadly, no correct way to secure three points – unless it's by remarkable, heroic circumstances, ideally over Manchester City in the Champions League.

    A thorough battering

This, then, was the ultimate psychological blow. Madrid weren't beaten here as much as blown away. They flirted with an equitable contest for all of five minutes. Kylian Mbappe did some nice things on the ball, Vinicius Jr looked awkward – but momentarily effective – on the right. They poked and prodded, but the Parisians didn't flinch.

And then PSG turned it on. The first goal was due to some shambolic defending. Raul Asencio – brought in here in lieu of the suspended Dean Huijsen – fumbled too long on the ball in the box. Ousmane Dembele intercepted, fell, but rolled the ball into the path of Ruiz, who tucked into the bottom corner.

Three minutes later, the Parisians were at it again. And this time Antonio Rudiger played culprit-in-chief, hesitating on the ball as Dembele charged him down. He glanced to his right, hoping to find an open Asencio. But Dembele was too rapid, and after cutting off the passing lane, nicked possession, ran through on goal, and finished past a stranded Courtois.

The third was no fault of Madrid's. Sure, Mbappe might have reacted slightly quicker after losing the ball high up the pitch, but PSG charged immediately. Achraf Hakimi found Dembele, who swiveled and, without looking, pinged a ball into space for the Moroccan. Hakimi stretched his legs, outran the breathless Fran Garcia, and squared for Ruiz, who completed his brace. After 24 minutes, this was a mauling. The referee called for the first of four hydration breaks over the course of 90 minutes. Madrid looked relieved to have a second to breathe.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia might have made it four before the half time whistle – but fired wide. Madrid kept it mercifully comfortable in the second half, even as PSG decided to largely stop playing football. Still, there was one final blow. This time it was Goncalo Ramos, bought for nearly nine figures two years ago but now very much a backup. He took Bradley Barcola's feed, pivoted, evaded a sliding defender and tucked home from six yards. Massacre complete.

In front of their own fans

Before the game, though, there was hope. MetLife Stadium was an optimistic sea of very hot white before kickoff. The train to the stadium was littered with pale Blancos jerseys, with PSG shirts sparse and awkward. "Hala Madrid" was heard as a catch phrase at ticket scanners and in the halls of tunnels between tracks. One Parisian tried to start a PSG chant, but received daggers from Madrid fans before he could be joined in any sort of vocal support. It was a gross, hot, humid and sticky day for football, but Madrid fans came into it with a sense of belief.

And before the first whistle, you could feel it. Madrid players were cheered loudly in the still-comical individual intros. The boos outrang the applause as each PSG player walked in. This was always going to feel like something of a Madrid home game – such is the global appeal of their fan base. But the magnitude of the discrepancy in fans between the two sides was remarkable, a tiny pocket of Parisian dark blue behind one goal serving as the only real area of French camaraderie (although they were loud throughout).

If there is one thing that Madrid fans must be applauded for, overall, though, is their sense of authenticity. Indeed, as soon as those in white started struggling, the boos rained down. Asencio was jeered. Rudiger was taunted. Even Mbappe, the guy Madrid fans have stuck with despite the controversy he has brought alongside his remarkable goalscoring production, was mocked as he toiled against his former club.

    Not at the same level

That all felt a bit unfair, though. It must be admitted that it is seldom right to feel sorry for Madrid. They can spend more than pretty much anyone else, and make a ritual of pinching the best players from every other big team in Europe. This is the Galactico model: sign the big names, disregard what everyone thinks.

Still, as they were outran, outmuscled and outplayed by a superior team, it became clear just how significant the difference is between these two sides. It was like watching men playing boys, senior pros beating up on a U-12 side in a sick, twisted scrimmage. Madrid are a very, very good football team. They may be tactically awkward, and still a work in progress under a manager still tinkering with his tactics. But they are a sublime collection of remarkably skilled individuals. Against most teams, on most days, that is enough. This CWC has served as pretty compelling evidence for that.

PSG are not most teams, though. Luis Enrique spent the final year of Kylian Mbappe's tenure beta-testing how to put together an effective side, and had no problems benching his soon-to-depart star. He remarked, certainly with a wink and a nudge, that when Mbappe left that he could finally work with a group of dedicated footballers. And what a magnificent job this has been. PSG are a finely balanced unit, dominant in midfield, devastating up front, and brave in their defensive positioning. They don't play with a recognized striker, and still scored 92 goals in 34 Ligue 1 games. That takes truly sublime coaching.

They executed every principle with aplomb here. When they lost the ball, they simply won it back. When Madrid pressed, they passed through them. When Madrid went long, PSG caught them offside. By the end of it all, they had completed almost three times as many passes – and that was after they had removed Ruiz and his tempo-setting aplomb from the field.

Holder: 'T10 is here to stay, so if you can't adapt, you'll always struggle'

Jason Holder, who had already joined the league of freelance T20 cricketers with stints in the CPL, IPL, BBL and SA20, has now added T10 to the list. The West Indies allrounder, representing Samp Army in the ongoing second edition of the Abu Dhabi T10, is relishing the challenge of cricket’s shortest format.Army started the season with a loss against Northern Warriors, but hit back with four successive wins. Holder played crucial roles in three of those victories. First, he bowled a decisive spell of 1 for 8 in two overs against Chennai Braves. Then, he produced back-to-back defining performances, smashing 29 from ten balls and grabbing 3 for 12 against Team Abu Dhabi, and a Player-of-the-Match contribution of 3 for 15 against Delhi Bulls.Related

Holder made his feats in the newest format sound quite easy.”You’ve just got to be very clear. Once you’re clear, it’s easier to execute,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “The moment you have a clouded mind, it’s a lot more difficult to execute. Having a clear mind, being clinical and just executing your plans is very much on the precision part of the game, and you’ve got to be precise in terms of executing.”As a bowler, Holder has only two overs to try and make an impact in a T10 game, and yet has delivered the results with the ball this season. He says the pressure in T10 isn’t any different to that of any other format, and has the numbers to show it, too.Holder has bagged eight wickets in five games, bowling at an average of just 10.12 and an incredible economy of 8.10 runs an over. Eventually, he brings it all down to execution and learning, and being keen to work on his skills.”You’ve got to execute on any given day, and make sure you’re hitting your straps,” he said. “You’re always looking to develop your game; you’re never a complete package. The game continues to move and evolve. It’s no point staying stagnant; you’ve got to find ways to continue to improve. You’ve got to keep sharpening your skills, and making yourself better.”West Indies, along with the USA, will be hosting the T20 World Cup in just about six months’ time. They have another 14 T20Is scheduled before the big tournament comes along – five of them against England at home start next week – and being a rare West Indies player who currently plays all three formats for his country, Holder believes T10 is “a good challenge” to have.”It’s still the same skills in cricket. You’re probably under a bit of more pressure in a shortened game, so definitely [T10] challenges your skills, temperament and overall cricket development,” he said. “It’s a wonderful game, and I think it’s here to stay. As cricketers, you’ve just got to adapt – to any given situation and circumstances. As a professional if you can’t adapt, then you’ll always struggle.”

Exclusive: Man Utd urged to replace Andre Onana to 'move forward' as ex-Red Devil believes No. 1 is 'an outfield player who has gone in goal'

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Onana has been a big disappointment for United since his £47m ($63m) move from Inter in 2023, making a number of high profile errors in his first and second seasons. The frequency of his errors has led to suggestions that coach Ruben Amorim would like a different goalkeeper next season and former United defender Paul Parker has urged the Portuguese to make a change.

  • WHAT PARKER SAID

Parker, speaking exclusively to Goal.com via Betsson, the home of odds, said: "I have to say that they do need a new goalkeeper. If they’re going to move forward next season, they need players, fans and everyone to be confident in one of the most important players on the pitch; the goalkeeper. Top sides always have a top goalkeeper that they are assured with, and Onana is not that goalkeeper. I can’t see how he’s going to cover up what he did last season, and I just really don’t believe that he can. If I don’t believe as someone watching, I worry what the players in the team are thinking. If you don’t believe in your goalkeeper and you’ve got that fear factor, it will cost you."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana made two slip ups in the Europa League quarter-final first leg with Lyon, a day after being told by Nemanja Matic that he was "one of the worst goalkeepers in the history of Manchester United". He also made costly mistakes in United's defeats by Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Wolves and Parker believes his defenders no longer trust him. "I believe they are there [not trusting him] and that is how it went last season – you didn’t know what was going to happen next, what he was going to do."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Parker believes Onana lacks basic goalkeeping qualities and focuses too much on playing out from the back with his feet. He added: "All you want a goalkeeper to do is save the ball. I don’t want a keeper with great feet, and if you’ve got great feet, go be an outfield player. Focus on just stopping as many shots as possible. And if Onana’s saving shots, don’t just throw it back out to people’s feet. I question if he was born a goalkeeper. I think he was an outfield player that has gone in goal. He wasn’t a goalkeeper from day one. The only thing he really hasn’t done, is become a goalkeeper. I don’t care what he did at Ajax or Inter; he’s not good enough to play at Manchester United."

Muzumdar: Deepti is the 'Ben Stokes of the team'

“We had thought about playing in a certain fashion [be positive] as a team and we will continue to do that”

Deepti Sharma’s dream Test match continued into the third morning•BCCI

Amol Muzumdar, head coach of the India women’s team, called Deepti Sharma the “Ben Stokes of the team” after her match haul of nine wickets – to go with knocks of 67 and 20 – led India to a famous 347-run win at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. The margin of victory was the highest in terms of runs in women’s Test history, while Deepti became the second Indian after Shubhangi Kulkarni to pick up five wickets and score a fifty in the same Test.”You are talking about Stokesy – I jokingly call her as the Ben Stokes of the team,” Muzumdar told WV Raman, himself a former coach of the team, on the official broadcast after the win. “She is fantastic. The confidence she has shown in her batting and the confidence she has gained in these two innings – nine wickets in the Test match and a fifty!”She is an important cog in the wheel when she comes [to bat in the] lower order, bowls crucial overs, and gets wickets.”Related

India posted 428 – of which 410 came on the first day – in their first innings and batted at a rate in excess of four an over. Even in the second innings, despite losing six wickets for 186, the run rate was around four and a half.”No Test match is easy. But the efforts the girls put in before the Test match – the players who came in five-six days before, we had a nice solid group that was working at the Wankhede Stadium,” Muzumdar said. “The preparation was nice, and it resulted in a Test match win.”We had thought about playing in a certain fashion as a team and we will continue to do that. It was not planned as a 400-run day. But we had to be positive. Glad that the team responded. And resulted in a good first day.”India wrapped up the win before lunch on the third day, a feat Muzumdar felt will hold them in good stead ahead of the Test against Australia next week.”Good signs for Indian cricket,” he said. “All of them who made their debut [Jemimah Rodrigues, Shubha Satheesh and Renuka Thakur] batted and bowled well. England is a top side but at the same time, these youngsters got a taste of what Test cricket is about.”
