Cummins' 200th wicket sets up Australia's dominance

After a starring role where he claimed his 200th Test wicket in style, captain Pat Cummins resisted making West Indies follow on late on day three as Australia strengthened their big lead in the first Test at Optus Stadium.Cummins and Mitchell Starc ran through West Indies with the second new ball in the final session, as Australia gained a huge first innings lead of 315 runs.Wickets came in a rush after Australia had toiled against determined West Indies’ batting on a surface lacking the venom expected. With Cummins preferring a rest for his bowlers, Australia faced 11 overs before stumps but lost opener Usman Khawaja who was caught behind off quick Kemar Roach.Related

Amid lengthening shadows from the towering grandstands, perhaps inspired by England’s ballistic batting against Pakistan in the concurrent Test in Rawalpindi, opener David Warner started with consecutive boundaries. It was a sign of what should be ahead early on day four as Australia seeks quick runs before a likely declaration. Warner, however, will be looking to cash in after a failure in the first innings continued a lean patch in Test cricket.Cummins led a well-balanced attack with wickets shared around the frontline bowlers. Australia’s quicks successfully reverted to hitting better lengths after a short-ball strategy late on day two was unfruitful. After lunch, Cummins knocked over captain Kraigg Brathwaite with a pearler to memorably celebrate his 200th wicket. Playing his 44th Test, Cummins became the fifth fastest to the landmark from an Australian behind only Clarrie Grimmett (36), Dennis Lillee (38), Stuart MacGill (41) and Shane Warne (42).His Test bowling average of 21.50 moved him fractionally ahead of Glenn McGrath as the lowest for Australians with at least 200 wickets.Cummins claimed two more with the second new ball after tea as West Indies’ defiance came crashing down. Starc did the damage initially when he trapped Jermaine Blackwood lbw with a full delivery, which was upheld on review in an umpire’s call. He then cleaned up Josh Da Silva with a trademark full delivery, as Starc started to menacingly conjure swing.Allrounder Cameron Green picked up his first Test wicket at home when he had concussion substitute Shamarh Brooks caught behind. It was a good reward for Green, who in his home Test debut didn’t bat in Australia’s first innings, after threatening earlier in the day with sharp pace and conjuring bounce with his towering height.A searing Green bouncer hit the helmet of No. 3 Nkrumah Bonner, who batted for another 40 minutes in the morning session before eventually being ruled out with concussion and replaced by Brooks.Pat Cummins goes up in appeal•Getty Images

Cummins had earlier summoned a mighty spell after lunch to prove there was some spice lurking in the much discussed green-tinged surface. He led an Australian attack who worked over a determined West Indies batting order with three wickets in the middle session. It dashed West Indies’ hopes of batting for the long haul in their daunting task of hauling in Australia’s mammoth first innings of 598 for 4.Heading into the match, West Indies had set a target of batting at least 100 overs, which they almost achieved but it was nearly not enough after such a listless bowling and fielding effort. They had started impressively against the odds with a 78-run partnership between Brathwaite and debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul, whose eye-catching 79-ball knock ended in the first over of the day when he nicked Josh Hazlewood to first slip.Chanderpaul had one ball earlier notched his half-century with a lucky boundary through slips but Brathwaite continued to play a strong rearguard to blunt Australia’s accurate attack.Brathwaite, however, could do little to thwart a gem from his opposite number as Cummins enjoyed another memorable performance.

Arsenal now scouting former Real Madrid prospect who Cesc Fabregas loves

Arsenal are scouting a former Real Madrid youngster who has been lavished with praise by former Gunners midfielder Cesc Fabregas, according to a new report.

Arsenal look to summer transfer window as title charge stalls

In a matter of just a couple of months, Arsenal’s season has been almost completely derailed. Since the turn of the year, the Gunners have been ejected out of both the FA Cup and EFL Cup by Manchester United and Newcastle respectively, while their chase for the Premier League title has also all but come to an end.

An unlikely defeat to West Ham United and a draw with Nottingham Forest in their two most recent games has left them trailing league leaders Liverpool by 13 points with just 11 games to go.

Speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw with high-flying Forest, head coach Mikel Arteta highlighted where it’s gone wrong this year.

“For many years, that (our defensive record) has not been a problem, but in order to win, you have to score goals,” he explained. “We need to find ways to convert more chances and get goals from different areas of the pitch. That’s something we certainly need to improve.”

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

Arteta’s side do remain with one shot at silverware this season, however, in the form of the Champions League, where they take on PSV Eindhoven in the round of 16 on Tuesday night.

“It’s a competition we’ve performed tremendously well in this season,” said the Spaniard. “We fought hard to get into this position, and now, as we enter the knockout stages, the building starts now.”

Arsenal eyeing Como sensation Nico Paz

To find more goals, Arsenal will now, of course, have to wait until the summer transfer window, where fans will be hoping Arteta can finally add a world-class striker to his squad after years of unanswered pleas. According to Caught Offside, however, Arteta is also keen to revitalise his midfield in the summer, and has his eyes firmly on Como star Nico Paz.

Paz joined Como from Real Madrid’s youth set-up in August and has since been enjoying a fine debut season for Cesc Fabregas’ side, scoring six goals and producing five assists in 25 Serie A games.

Caught Offside report that Arteta wants the 20-yer-old to provide competition for Martin Odegaard in attacking midfield, but will face competition for his signature from both Manchester City and Inter Milan. Madrid also have a rather bizarre clause to buy back Paz for either £6.6 million in the summer of 2025, £7.4 million in 2026 or £8.2 million in 2027, with Como perhaps not realising his potential to fetch a much bigger fee when they signed that deal.

Paz, who earned his first Argentina cap back in October, has been described by Fabregas as a “a special player” who “must be free to express himself”. Fabregas also made it clear recently that he wants to keep Paz at Como for the forseeable future.

“Nico is a Como player. Real Madrid can buy him back, but at a certain price,” he explained. “Nico is a young player, and our relationship with his family is very stable.”

“They [Paz’s family] are very happy, they thank us for all this, and it is a great pleasure for us to have him here. Nico is our brand, and we want him to continue with us for many years to come.”

Wilder must unleash "beautiful" Sheffield United star who Leeds wanted

It’s fair to say tonight’s Championship contest between Leeds United and Sheffield United is a hotly anticipated one, as the second tier’s top two do battle at Bramall Lane.

The Blades could well topple the Whites off their perch at the top of the division with a special win, with South Yorkshire also winning itself bragging rights in the process.

Chris Wilder

Of course, Chris Wilder’s men might find Leeds too difficult of a team to break down, on the contrary, with Daniel Farke and Co potentially five points clear at the summit come full-time.

It will be a fascinating match to take in, with the 57-year-old left with many a selection dilemma too ahead of Leeds’ visit as various injured personnel could be back fit and ready to go.

Sheffield United's selection dilemmas

One face that could be back in contention for this second-tier humdinger is Tom Cannon with the nine-goal striker in the Championship this season nowhere to be seen last time out versus Luton Town owing to injury.

Now, however, he could be fast-tracked back into the first team fold to try and catch a staunch Leeds defence cold, with the ex-Stoke City loanee yet to get off the mark in his new surroundings after a potent stint at the Potters.

Tom Cannon in action for Sheffield United

It would be quite the dramatic stage for Cannon to start to recapture his Stoke best, with Wilder also potentially boosted by experienced head Kieffer Moore being back fit as another body he can call upon up top.

Amazingly, the Welshman has never scored against Leeds from nine career contests, but unwanted records like that are made to be broken, with the ex-Cardiff City man on five strikes for the season when fit.

But, away from the two named strikers, there is another figure who could make a timely return from the treatment room that would really hurt Leeds, having previously been on their radar as a transfer target.

The Sheffield United star who could really hurt Leeds

Leeds have definitely kept a keen eye on proceedings at Bramall Lane in recent years when it comes to their incoming transfer business, with Jayden Bogle poached from South Yorkshire last summer to defect over to Elland Road.

In the same window, Farke and Co were allegedly interested in snapping up second-tier star Gustavo Hamer, but no such deal came to be, leaving the high-flying Blades with a top talent for the level.

The table-toppers eventually landed Manor Solomon’s signature, who has taken to life in the Championship swimmingly with seven strikes and seven assists in league action, but Hamer feels as if he would’ve been a sterling buy long-term for the Whites especially if promotion is reached.

Indeed, the 27-year-old managed to tally up an impressive four goals and six assists across 36 Premier League appearances last season for Wilder’s men – even as a rock-bottom finish was confirmed in the top-flight – on top of the fact he is only two goal contributions off Solomon in the here and now.

Amazingly, his seven goals and five assists would place him among Leeds’ top five performers if he had entered the building, with Farke’s men even more of a terrifying prospect potentially if Hamer was thrown into the side down the left or as an attack-oriented body centrally.

Hamer could have the last laugh later on, however, if he is fit enough to start, as the “beautiful” Blades ace – as he’s been heralded in the past by football journalist Josh Bunting – goes about delivering a reality check to the league leaders

Birmingham

Paik Seung-ho, Willum Willumsson and Emil Hansson have all been missing in recent weeks through injury, whereas Lee Buchanan has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Aside from that, Birmingham appear to have come through the EFL Trophy win at Stevenage with no further issues.

Newcastle

Howe had Harvey Barnes, Joelinton and Jamaal Lascelles missing for the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal, and with such a quick turnaround, the trio look set to be absent again.

The Newcastle boss could ring the changes, though, with Nick Pope still awaiting his first appearance back after recovering from an injury. Sven Botman was replaced with an issue late on against Arsenal and looks set to miss the trip to St Andrew’s.

Where to watch Birmingham v Newcastle on TV

The match is scheduled to kick-off at 5:45pm (GMT) on Saturday 8, February and will be broadcast live on BBC One. It can also be streamed in the UK on BBC iPlayer.

In the USA, amid connections between Birmingham and minority Blues owner Tom Brady, the match is also set to be streamed on ESPN+.

Birmingham v Newcastle referee

The man in charge of the fourth-round tie at St Andrew’s will be Matthew Donohue. He will be assisted by Paul Hodskinson and Nigel Lugg and the fourth official is set to be James Bell.

Blues supporters will recognise Donohue, who has taken charge of numerous Birmingham games in the past, however, this will be his first time refereeing a Newcastle first-team fixture.

The Magpies had won nine games in succession in all competitions at the end of 2024 and beginning of 2025, with Alexander Isak firing in front of goal.

However, a 4-1 home defeat to Bournemouth last month ended that run, and they have since lost another Premier League game at St James’ Park to Fulham. Despite this, Newcastle qualified for the EFL Cup final, beating Arsenal 4-0 across two legs.

Russell's fifty counters Neser's hat-trick as Renegades seal third straight win

Peirson’s unbeaten 45 also in vain as Heat suffer second loss against Renegades

Michael Neser marked his BBL return with a hat-trick before a resurgent Melbourne Renegades rode an outrageous counterattack from Andre Russell to defeat Brisbane Heat once again. On a tricky surface at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium, Renegades were in major trouble in their chase of 138 after Neser’s heroics. But Russell turned the match on its head with 57 off 42 balls punctuated by six mighty sixes. In a see-saw finish, continuing a string of tight finishes to start BBL12, a scratchy Aaron Finch held his nerve to hit the winning boundary in the final over as Renegades celebrated their third straight win to start the season.Heat are winless having lost both their games to Renegades.Neser returns to the BBL in style
Relieved of Test duties, Neser enjoyed his return to the BBL with a wicket first ball to dismiss Sam Harper, who flicked a leg-stump half-volley straight to the fielder inside the ring. But there was nothing fortuitous when Neser found the perfect line and length to graze the edge of Jake Fraser-McGurk’s bat in the last ball of the first over. With his next ball, in the third over, Neser bowled Renegades’ captain Nic Maddison, who chopped onto his stumps, before claiming a hat-trick in stunning style by rattling the stumps after Jonathan Wells didn’t play a shot.Bowling with unrelenting accuracy, much like his impressive performance against West Indies in the Adelaide Test, Neser was unplayable until Russell dented his figures. It might be a different format but Neser showed why he is unlucky not to be a regular member of Australia’s stacked pace attack in Test cricket. In a silver lining, he produced just the ninth BBL hat-trick.Dre Russ launches audacious counterattack
At 9 for 4, there were shades of Sydney Thunder’s embarrassing all out 15 but Russell made a mockery of conditions and Renegades’ precarious position. He smashed three sixes off a red-hot Neser to change the complexion of the game within minutes.Heat’s captain Jimmy Peirson gambled with spinner Mitchell Swepson in the sixth over and Russell promptly greeted him with a massive six over long-on. It was either feast or famine for the West Indian, whose first four scoring shots were sixes. With brute power, Russell wound the clock back to notch up his first BBL half-century in his 25th innings. But he appeared to have suffered a wrist injury and wasn’t quite the same as his belligerent innings came to an end in the 15th over amid the power surge. In the midst of a brief four match-stint before playing in the UAE’s inaugural ILT20 league, Russell made a big impact having previously expressed disappointment of being overlooked during the BBL draft.Renegades recruit Rogers menaces on tricky surface
After Heat elected to bat, Maddinson gave the new ball to spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was playing against his old side, and Akeal Hosein. It proved a masterstroke as they removed big-hitting Max Bryant and Colin Munro, but Renegades’ attack was soon thwarted by Matthew Renshaw and Sam Billings.Straight after the drinks break, seamer Tom Rogers delivered by removing Billings with a sharp delivery to catch the edge and later in the over he bowled Renshaw, who played on after failing to cope with the extra bounce.Rogers continued to extract menacing bounce from the surface, with one rising delivery hitting Peirson on the back of the neck, and added two more wickets to his career-best BBL performance.Renegades have had a revival so far this season with the recruitment of Rogers proving key. The 28-year-old enjoyed a breakout last season with Hobart Hurricanes, where he claimed 20 wickets. He’s now taken seven wickets in three games this season and beefed up Renegades’ attack along with Mujeeb and left-arm spinner Hosein, who finished with three wickets and also starred with the bat.Heat’s top-order troubles
Life without Chris Lynn has proven tough for Heat after two modest batting efforts against Renegades. They hoped the inclusion of Renshaw would prove a tonic after he missed the opener due to the birth of his first child. The in-form Renshaw has made a strong start to the domestic season in the longer formats and he looked composed in his BBL season debut in a steady partnership with Billings. Renshaw and Billings, however, couldn’t capitalise on their platform leaving Heat in a hole before Peirson came to the rescue with a flurry of late boundaries. But their total ultimately proved not enough, leaving Heat’s hierarchy needing to ponder how to get their batting order firing.

100% passing: 8/10 Aston Villa gem just showed he could be the new Grealish

Aston Villa snuck through to the next round of the FA Cup last night after getting the better of Ange Postecoglou’s out-of-form Tottenham Hotspur side 2-1.

On another occasion, Unai Emery’s Villans might well have cruised to victory instead of being made to hang on at the end courtesy of a goal from Spurs debutant Mathys Tel, with the hosts registering a bumper seven shots on target across the duration of the entertaining clash.

Thankfully, Villa got the ball rolling early on when homegrown product Jacob Ramsey caught Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky cold, with Ramsey one of many faces for the hosts that can walk away from the Cup win with their heads held high.

Standout Aston Villa performers vs Spurs

The natural place to start here is with Ramsey’s fortuitous goal within the first minute of the match, with the Villa starlet lashing an effort towards the Czech ‘keeper’s net that somehow trickled in.

Away from this perfectly timed opener, there were also the likes of Donyell Malen and Leon Bailey who looked equally as lively in attack with a combined five shots amassed between them, on top of Morgan Rogers stylishly stealing the show from the number ten spot once more.

Rogers would ultimately seal the win with a tap-in deep into the second 45 minutes, with his performance on the night more than deserving of another standout moment in the Villa Park spotlight, considering the on-fire 22-year-old accumulated four key passes, two successful dribbles and won six duels away from this simple finish finding the back of the net.

Whilst there would have been frustrations that Villa leaked a late goal, the main mood around the stadium at full-time would have been one of joy and optimism, especially with the star-studded substitutes bench Emery can now call upon after a busy transfer deadline day.

Aston Villa star has already shown glimpses of Grealish

Obviously, there was a lot of fanfare surrounding Marcus Rashford’s late introduction into the contest, but Marco Asensio would end up leaving more of a lasting mark on Villa supporters than the Manchester United loanee.

Indeed, Asensio very much showed off his ex-Real Madrid pedigree with a cool and assured 24-minute cameo, amazingly not misplacing any of his 15 passes which was undoubtedly the standout statistic.

Birmingham Live journalist John Townley gifted the skilful Spaniard a high 8/10 post-match rating despite the 29-year-old barely being on the pitch, stating that his brief showing gave the Villa masses something to ‘cheer’ about late on with more ‘flicks and tricks’ to come as he establishes himself in England.

Asensio will hope he goes down remembered as an exciting player in the West Midlands in a similar manner to Jack Grealish with the Spain international’s cameo certainly showing a few shades of the Midlands native. The backheel to set free Rogers at one stage (footage above) was simply marvellous.

Both Asensio and Grealish certainly share similar traits with both players in question regularly leaving defenders in a spin courtesy of a whole array of flashy moves down the wing, with the end product also there to justify the immense trickery.

At his previous two esteemed employers, Asensio has managed to pick up an impressive 111 goals and assists from 333 appearances, with Grealish helping himself to a hefty 32 goals and 41 assists when hitting the 200-plus game mark at Villa Park.

Emery will hope Asensio can explode into life like this – away from these promising beginnings in Birmingham – to show off his PSG and Madrid best.

The options the ex-Arsenal manager has at his disposal now in attack are very impressive as the Villans potentially eye up a FA Cup success as well as a top-four finish in the Premier League.

U.S. Soccer has released two new kits to be worn by both the U.S. men's national team and the U.S. women's national team through the remainder of the 2025 year.

The "Brilliant" kit, a white shirt, draws details from past USWNT kits, while adding modernism to the shirt to reflect the evolution of the game. The kit will strictly be worn by the USWNT.

"This collection represents Nike's deep commitment to women’s soccer as an undeniable force that continues to elevate the game globally,” said Maggie Gauger, Vice President/GM, Nike North America Women's Business. “The refreshed designs honor the brilliance of the U.S. Women’s National Team — celebrating 40 years of legacy, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements both on and off the pitch.”

The "Heartbeat" kit, a dark shirt, is a tribute to the fans. It's designed with a street-style aesthetic that is a reflection of the heartbeat that fans give the national team program.

“As the game evolves, the style evolves,” said USMNT player Mark McKenzie. “There's a modern edge to this [Heartbeat] kit, a sleekness that catches the eye. But it doesn't lose sight of what this crest stands for, the history etched in the Red, White, and Blue threads. The kit pays tribute to our fans and the importance of their connection to the team. It's a reminder of who we play for and what we represent every single time we step onto that field. Not much more you can ask for!”

In addition to the two new kits, U.S. Soccer has released a pre-match top that features the iconic "One Nation, One Team" slogan, along with an anthem jacket that features abstract red and blue stars in U.S. national team colors. The jacket is meant to be wearable with both kits.

“To me, the kits represent the USWNT mentality of always pushing forward,” said USWNT player Biyendolo. “I know I can speak for my teammates when I say that every time we put on the uniform, it brings a great sense of pride. When we represent our country, our team and ourselves, we know we are doing so while standing on the shoulders of giants. The Brilliant Kit is just another way to honor our past and the women who played before us.”

WHAT THE U.S. SOCCER FAN COUNCIL SAID

“We look forward to seeing stadiums full of these kits as we cheer on our teams with the heart and passion that they represent,” commented Liz Lafitte, chair of the U.S. Soccer Fan Council.

Everton now plotting summer swoop to sign "sensational" in-demand winger

Looking to sharpen what has been a blunt frontline at times this season, Everton are now reportedly plotting a summer swoop to sign a talented Ligue 1 winger for David Moyes.

Everton transfer news

With Moyes back in charge, the Toffees have looked rejuvenated at times and are finally moving beyond the concerns of potential relegation and back towards the Premier League’s top half. It’s progress that The Friedkin Group needed and progress that the Toffees are making every week in their final season at Goodison Park.

Of course, it’s not just their new ownership which is signifying a new era for the Merseyside club. Bidding farewell to Goodison Park at the end of the season, Everton will commence the start of a new chapter at the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, which has already hosted a test match between their academy and Wigan Athletic.

With a state-of-the-art stadium may well come fresh faces, too, with Friedkin looking to pick up where they left off in the January transfer window following the arrival of Carlos Alcaraz.

Everton's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates scoring their second goal with Everton'sJackHarrison

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, having sent their scouts, Everton are now plotting a summer swoop to sign Luis Henrique from Marseille, but face competition from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

The Brazilian has found his best form in France to earn Premier League interest and could yet have an important decision to make when the summer arrives. There’s no doubt that he would sharpen Moyes’ frontline ahead of the manager’s first full season in charge of Everton in over a decade.

2400% price rise: Everton must regret selling flop who’s "one of the best"

He’d be one of the best players in David Moyes’ current Everton side.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 21, 2025

Whether the Toffees can fend off the competition of both Newcastle and Forest remains to be seen, but Henrique would certainly be an impressive coup.

"Sensational" Henrique could replace Harrison

If Everton want to match their top-half ambitions, signing an upgrade on the likes of Jack Harrison should be their first move this summer. And Henrique would offer them exactly that. Given how successful their last signing from Marseille was, the Toffees should push on and secure a potential repeat of their Iliman Ndiaye deal.

The numbers speak for themselves and paint the picture of what has been a disappointing spell for Harrison. Henrique, meanwhile, is on the rise and a player Everton should have on their wishlist this summer.

At just 23 years old, the winger’s potential is ever-increasing with Everton potentially taking full advantage. Dubbed “sensational” by U23 scout Antonio Mango earlier this season, Henrique is undeniably one to watch this summer.

When the transfer window swings open, Friedkin could continue their solid start by handing Moyes some much-needed fresh faces in pursuit of taking the club back where they belong. In turn, that could spell the end for Harrison in Merseyside once and for all after two loan spells at Everton.
