Rajitha and Fernando win first 50 minutes, Litton and Mushfiqur rule rest of the day

Stumps In the first 50 minutes in Mirpur, Sri Lanka’s two seamers tore Bangladesh’s top order down, the scoreline reading 24 for 5 inside seven overs. But the recovery was just as epic. Mushfiqur Rahim – fresh from a hundred in Chattogram – progressed masterfully to a ninth Test century. Litton Das, more aggressive than his senior partner, strode to a hundred of his own. At stumps, the pair had put on 253 unbeaten runs together, and set Bangladesh on track for an imposing total.Bangladesh, who seemed to have suffered a series-defining collapse at the start of the day, had dug incredibly deep to finish the day perhaps the happier outfit. There was only one further recognised batter to come for them, but it was clear that the pitch was now flat, and that Sri Lanka’s spinners posed little threat.Despite their rollicking start, it was ultimately a day of toil for Sri Lanka’s attack. The scoring rate having increased through the day, Bangladesh were going at 3.25 an over by stumps. There was not a lot in the surface beyond the early overs, during which Kasun Rajitha claimed three wickets and Asitha Fernando two, but Sri Lanka’s spinners were nevertheless modest, and at times bowled too many short deliveries. For most of the day, Litton was more adventurous than Mushfiqur. Never was this more clear than when Sri Lanka’s seamers bowled bouncers at Litton just after lunch. He rarely shied away from using the pull shot, even with the leg trap set. Fernando should have had Litton caught for 47, when a top-edged pull floated out behind square on the leg side. But Kamindu Mendis – the substitute fielder – could not get his hands around the descending ball, having run back from backward square-leg. This was the only real chance either batter offered, though.Even from early in the innings, Litton was severe on errors of length, particularly when Sri Lanka’s bowlers pitched short. He punished Ramesh Mendis through the leg side twice in his first over, and continued to prosper in that region. Of his 16 boundaries, 13 came in the arc between fine leg and wide long-on. Thanks partly to Sri Lanka’s indiscretions, Litton raced through the 80s and 90s, to his second Test hundred; he collected three fours and five overthrows to move from 79 to 101 in the space of 13 balls. The runs continued to flow after he got to triple figures. Litton finished the day on 135 off 221.Mushfiqur’s innings was steadier. He rode his form through the early stages, hitting two fours off his first eight balls, before settling into a rhythm as the morning and afternoon sessions wore on. He was largely content to wait for the bad balls, which Sri Lanka’s spinners – in particular – delivered with some frequency. Mostly, they bowled too full to Mushfiqur, and he would step out to hit them through the off side, while picking up singles square on either side of the wicket in between.Kasun Rajitha struck on the second ball of the match, removing Mahmudul Hasan Joy, before picking up two more wickets•AFP/Getty Images

Where Litton had been intent to take on the short-pitched bowling Sri Lanka’s seamers bowled through the middle session, Mushfiqur was largely content to duck or weave. He got to his 27th half-century with a cover-driven four off Praveen Jayawickrama, off the 112th ball he faced, and continued to progress serenely after that, rarely missing out on the obvious scoring opportunities, but also slowing down when the opposition bowled well at him, as they did just before tea.The runs came quickly for him as well in the third session, Sri Lanka’s bowlers clearly having been worn down by the pair, and by the heat. About halfway through the session, Mushfiqur poked one square of the wicket on the off side and completed his century – his third against Sri Lanka, who going by the stats are his favourite opposition. The second new ball, taken after 81.3 overs, did not trouble either batter much.Despite their eventual toil, Sri Lanka’s quicks started brilliantly. Rajitha was the more impressive of the two bowlers, and had set the morning’s collapse in motion with the second ball of the match.Bowling from wide of the crease, he got the ball to straighten slightly off the pitch, and whizz between the bat and pad of Mahmudul Hasan Joy, whose off stump was flattened. Rajitha would also get two left-handers off successive balls with roughly this strategy, only from around the wicket. In the seventh over of the innings, he tempted Najmul Hossain Shanto into a big drive, and took down his off stump as well. Next ball, he angled one into the pads of Shakib Al Hasan, who played around it and was given out lbw – a decision that was upheld upon review.Fernando’s wickets, meanwhile, did not follow so close a pattern. He skidded one at Tamim Iqbal in the second over, and the batter sent a leading edge to point, where Jayawickrama took a good diving catch. Tamim had been looking to whip that ball to the leg side.Bangladesh’s struggling captain Mominul Haque was Fernando’s next victim. Poking at a length ball outside off, Mominul sent a thin edge to the wicketkeeper, and was out for nine. This was his sixth consecutive single-figure score, and the seventh in eight innings. In the end, Rajitha’s were the day’s only good figures – he finished with 3 for 43 from 19 overs. Fernando had 2 for 80 from 17 – his short-ball bursts having proved expensive, though he did create that chance off Litton. The spinners were a disappointment, but then the pitch had not yet begun to take any serious turn. Sri Lanka will hope that if Ramesh and Jayawickrama cannot be immediately penetrative on day two, that they will at least be economical.

Lopetegui has now demoted "top-quality" West Ham player to "bit-part" role

It’s been an extremely testing few weeks for Lopetegui, who’s faced serious scrutiny in parts, and West Ham’s head coach will be internally mourning the loss of his dear departed as he also seeks to resurrect his side’s run of form in the top flight.

In some more positive news for the tactician, club insider ExWHUemployee has shared that his players are starting to buy into Lopetegui’s methodology – as they all slowly begin to get behind the 58-year-old.

“There is a real growing sense at the club now that the players as a collective are starting to believe in Lopetegui and his team,” stated Ex (via West Ham Way).

“Its not been a great start to life for the Head Coach, but we understand that the players are really buying into his system and are supporting him in wanting to make it a success.

“This belief within the squad appears to be evident on recent performances, although not perfect, but there are clear signs of improvement as we look to build on some positive results of late.”

Lopetegui is also set to make a few key decisions ahead of the winter transfer window. Summer signing Guido Rodriguez has been linked with an unceremonious January exit from West Ham, just months after his arrival from Real Betis on a free transfer.

Julen Lopetegui demotes Guido Rodriguez to "bit-part" West Ham role

According to insider Claret & Hugh, that potential departure is now gaining traction. It is believed Lopetegui now sees Rodriguez as a “bit-part” West Ham player, and the Argentine could leave next month in an effort to re-establish himself elsewhere.

West Ham midfielder Guido Rodriguez

“He [Rodriguez] had a small injury for the Bournemouth game,” said a club source to C&H.

“But the manager only sees him as a bit-part player now.”

The 30-year-old is said to be openly seeking a return to Betis, who are also interested in re-signing their former player mid-season, so his switch back to La Liga could be something to seriously watch out for.

Called a “top-quality” player by Terry Gibson, Rodriguez’s move to West Ham hasn’t exactly worked out as most would’ve hoped.

Better than Rohl: Southampton looking at "elite" Martin replacement

Just this May, Southampton were celebrating promotion to the Premier League via a dramatic playoff final victory, having got the better of Daniel Farke’s Leeds United by a single goal.

Now, the Saints are rock bottom of the division they longed to be in, with a crushing 5-0 loss to a rampant Tottenham Hotspur resulting in Russell Martin losing his job.

It did feel as if the writing was on the wall at full-time for Martin, as the St Mary’s masses that had managed to endure the full car-crash match all cried for their under-fire manager to be relieved of his duties.

Now, the powers that be at the South Coast are tasked with finding a successor that can recharge the downtrodden Saints, with a list of names already being talked about.

Frontrunners to replace Martin at Southampton

Football is a game that waits for nobody, as Martin has cruelly found out by being reduced to unemployment after once guiding the Saints to promotion glory.

The aim will be to get in a quickfire replacement, and in the form of reported target Danny Rohl, the relegation candidates would appoint a face who knows Southampton well.

After all, the German was a coach at St. Mary’s during the reign of Ralph Hassenhuttl, with the now Sheffield Wednesday boss perhaps eyeing up a reunion, having been a hit in South Yorkshire to date with 27 wins collected from 65 total games.

But, there is another manager in the Championship who is also apparently high up on the list of potential replacements, and he is sticking out even more than the Owls boss at his current employers.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Southampton make "elite" boss top contender

As per a report from Football Insider, the relegation-threatened Saints have now made West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan a top contender for the vacancy.

The Spaniard has emerged as the new favourite to replace Martin according to the report, which also states that Corberan is keen to quit his position at the Baggies to take over the top-flight’s basement club.

It could well be the allure of managing in the league above that is too tempting for Corberan to refuse, especially when you consider the 44-year-old’s impressive numbers as a manager in England – when glancing at the table above – have all come about in the second tier.

In total, the popular West Brom boss has masterminded 85 victories in the Championship across his glittering managerial CV, with two playoff finishes achieved at the helm of the Baggies and the Terriers also leading to football scout Petar Petrov labelling him as “elite.”

He could well be worth a punt by Southampton in the league above over Rohl, therefore, as the German isn’t quite as experienced nor does he boast a similarly impressive win record.

Moreover, even when Corberan’s side haven’t basked in the glory of another three points this season, they’ve very rarely been out of contests in a similar manner to Martin’s sobering last match in charge versus Spurs.

Only three losses have come their way this season in the unforgiving Championship, with a staggering 11 draws picked up, as the likes of Karlan Grant have also managed to turn around their faltering time at the Hawthorns under the highly thought-of coach.

He now has five league goals next to his name as a returning member of the squad, having been out on loan all of last season, with the Saints hopeful that Corberan can re-energise the failing troops on the South Coast if he is handed the reins soon.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Rohl still has some way to go in learning the ropes of the English game, when you also glance at the fact he has tasted eight defeats in charge of his inconsistent Owls side this campaign in the Championship.

Whereas, it does feel like Corberan’s time for a Premier League job post is in the here and now, as Southampton now perhaps waiting to offer him that opportunity.

Ben Stokes brutalises Worcestershire with record-breaking century on Durham comeback

New Road proves too small for new England captain as 17 sixes rain down on hosts

David Hopps06-May-2022

Ben Stokes and David Bedingham leave the field at lunch after a remarkable morning session•Getty Images

Worcestershire 169 for 6 (Barnard 55, Potts 5-35) trail Durham 580 for 6 dec (Stokes 161, Bedingham 135, Dickson 104) by 411 runsFor my first trick, how about a county-record number of sixes? Ben Stokes marked his first appearance since his elevation to the England captaincy in extraordinary fashion with 17 of them for Durham in the LV= Championship. It was bold, it was brutal and it was utterly contemptuous, and those present to see it at Worcester delighted in an assault that, long before the end, had entered the realms of fantasy. For Stokes, the business part of the season begins on June 2 when New Zealand visit Lord’s for the first Test, but it was as if his ambitions for the challenge ahead, his hopes and his fears, burst forth in an imposing display of power-hitting. He was an untameable force of nature. Every member of Worcestershire’s attack, to some extent or other, was brushed from his presence. This was murder beneath the cathedral.”It was a good day, wasn’t it?” he said, with a broad smile.Stokes came to the crease in the third over of the morning and left it 28 overs later in the fourth over of the afternoon. In that time, he made 161 from 88 balls, permitted such freedom by a scoreboard reading 360 for 4. Along the way, he used four bats, explaining that he had just received a new batch and was testing them out for the summer ahead. The verdict, as if you didn’t know? “They were all good.”Elderly spectators smiled upon his feat as if infused with the spirit of youth. The most unfortunate onlooker must have been the woman who arrived immediately after lunch, her arrival delayed because her boiler had been dripping, but she appeared to be quite content, unable to countenance the thought that watching Worcestershire’s attack so mistreated would have been remotely enjoyable. There were free-flowing swings through the line and gentle cuffs. There were mighty blows and there were sweetly-tuned caresses. And there were so nearly six sixes in an over: when his final blow fell a few metres short at long-on, Stokes swished his bat and flung back his head in disappointment. “I knew as soon as I hit the final delivery that it didn’t quite have the legs,” he said.Josh Baker, an England U-19 left-arm spinner, will be grateful to have been spared that anguish. Long consultations after the fourth and fifth balls of the over told of Worcestershire’s protective instincts. Stokes shared that kindly eye. He has known what it is like to be on the receiving end – and in a World T20 final. “Hopefully he can use the experience and doesn’t look into it too much.”Twice now, he has launched sixes off the first five balls of an over without quite being able to land the final blow. Oh, for such a sweet failure. The first time, in 2011, he was still a teenager seeking to make his way when he assaulted Hampshire’s Liam Dawson at the Ageas Bowl. Enough water has flowed under the bridge for several lifetimes since, some of it somewhat polluted, but his power remains immense, his appetite undimmed.Baker’s first three balls to Stokes had all been dot-balls, but he still ended up conceding 34 from nine deliveries all told. Leach, huffing and puffing to no good effect, was taken for 42 from 22, five sixes among them. Thirteen of Stokes’ 17 sixes flew over the leg-side, every blow in front of square. There were no slogs, just authentic cricket shots of disturbing force. As the weather constantly switched from warm to chill, a day of contradictions, Stokes was a constant. The game became a thing of rare simplicity. The only way he seemed likely to be stopped was if a council official intervened on the grounds of health and safety. This was his first innings since England’s ten-wicket defeat against West Indies in March; his first for Durham since Warwickshire last July when he left halfway through to captain a hastily-convened England shadow squad because of a Covid outbreak. He began with a solid, front-foot defensive. So far, so routine. To his next ball, he took a stride down the pitch, his intent now clear. The pitch was benevolent, the bowling unthreatening. As the bells rang for noon, his range had lengthened. He was in his element.Related

Ben Stokes carries wisdom of experience into ultimate England honour

He pulled Ed Barnard perilously close to deep square leg when 18; Ben Gibbon risked an lbw appeal on 40, and there was another glimmer of an opportunity on 139 at backward point when vulnerability again briefly revealed itself. But they could not have been more ephemeral. The most common sight was Worcestershire’s boundary fielders sprinting, staggering and reaching hopelessly as the ball sailed into the stands in all directions, with Stokes adding 53 runs from 10 balls at the height of his onslaught. Most crossed to a healthy thwack, but the really draining ones were the mishits that raced away with comparable force. New Road was not big enough to contain him. Somewhere along the way, David Bedingham’s completion of his hundred (brisk enough, in 120 balls) passed almost unnoticed under cover of the storm. Bedingham, a reminder of normality, fell two balls after Stokes’ demise, their stand worth 220 in 28 overs.Through happy coincidence, another great England allrounder, Ian Botham, Durham’s president, was on hand to witness Stokes’ grand innings, although as he was part of a lunch gathering in a marquee for Duncan Fearnley, the former Worcestershire batter, chairman and bat-maker, he did not necessarily see much of it. Mark Nicholas’ speeches are very fine things, but even so there may have been some fidgeting. The Championship record for sixes in an innings stood at 16, shared by Australian Andrew Symonds, who was only 20 when he made a mockery of Abergavenny’s tiny boundaries playing for Gloucestershire against Glamorgan in 1995. Essex’s allrounder Graham Napier equalled the feat against Surrey at Whitgift School 16 years later.Lunch intervened with 15 sixes to Stokes’ name. There was to be no messing. The record was equalled with the first ball after the resumption, Gibbon watching the ball sail towards the club offices at long-on. He broke it in the next over against the legspin of Worcestershire’s captain, Brett D’Oliveira. Fearnley would probably tell you that, had Stokes been using one of his bats, his final blow against D’Oliveira would not have fallen short at deep midwicket. As it is, Colin Munro’s world record of 23 sixes in an innings remains intact. Perhaps that is for another day, not that he cares. “People tell you about records, but that’s not why you play the game,” he said.Stokes’ nine overs with the ball were far more uneventful, a gentle introduction to the season, but once again the force was with Matthew Potts, whose five for 35 by the close represented his third five-for of the season and occurred in a match when bowlers have had minimal impact. He primarily swings the ball back at a good pace, is a yard faster than last season and, in an opening phase of the season characterised by slow pitches, few fast bowlers have acquitted themselves more impressively. He is catching the eye of more than just the England captain.

Chelsea plot move for £38m star who’s the "perfect Kante replacement"

Chelsea are not short of talent in their midfield. Perhaps it is the least you might expect given the money they have invested to improve the options in the middle of the park, but Enzo Maresca is certainly spoiled for choice.

The first choice pairing in midfield has been Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. The Ecuadoriancost £115m, which broke the British transfer record of £106.8m Chelsea spent on the 2022 World Cup winner. Although he is injured at the moment, Belgian midfielder Romeo Lavia is also an important player for the Blues, and he cost £58m.

Incredibly, the West London side might well be looking to add another expensive midfielder to their squad.

Chelsea target new midfield star

The player in question here is Real Madrid and France international midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. The 24-year-old is seen as someone who can leave the Spanish capital for the right price.

According to a report from Spain, Chelsea are one of the sides who are fighting it out for the Frenchman’s signature. The West Londoners are also joined by Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United in the race for the Frenchman, who ‘have all shown interest’ in signing him.

Aurelien Tchouameni

The price for Tchouameni is not currently clear at this stage. However, he is valued at £38m by Football Transfers, and Real Madrid’s reported intention is to sell the Frenchman ‘at a price that allows for immediate reinvestment’ into his replacement.

Thus, it is safe to assume he will be another expensive addition for the Blues.

Transfer Focus

Why Tchouameni would be a good signing

Despite some injury issues this season for Tchouameni, the Frenchman has played an important role for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The former Chelsea manager has played his number 14 on 21 different occasions this term.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65836734

The 24-year-old has out in some impressive performances this term, but perhaps none have been as commanding as the one against Real Betis in La Liga. As per Sofascore, he won 4/4 tackles, 8/9 ground duels and completed 93% of his passes.

Indeed, it is performances like this that the Blues will be hoping for from the Frenchman. If he lives up to that then he could finally be the man to replace another French midfielder, N’Golo Kante. At least, that is what content creator Felix Johnston said back in 2021 amid initial links, describing Tchouameni as the “perfect Kante replacement”.

Ex-Chelsea star Kante was once dubbed the “best central midfielder in the world” by club legend Frank Lampard with the 2018 World Cup winner simply superb for the West Londoners. He made 269 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and grabbing 16 assists.

He won the biggest accolades at Stamford Bridge, including the Champions League in 2020/21 and the Premier League title in his first campaign with the club, 2016/17. That season, the former Leicester City star featured in 35 games as the Blues lifted their most recent league title.

Indeed, the similarities between Tchouameni and Kante are clear to see. Both are French defensive midfielders, who have competed with the national team and won major trophies at club level before a move, or potential move, to Stamford Bridge.

However, you can further compare the duo with their statistics, courtesy of Squawka. Taking into account Tchouameni’s stats from this season, and Kante’s from the 2016/17 title-winning campaign, you can see just how similar they are.

Real Madrid's AurelienTchouameniin action with Pachuca's Bryan Gonzalez

Per 90 minutes this season, the Real Madrid star averages a ground duel success rate of 59.42%, compared to 56.15% for the 2018 World Cup winner.

Kante’s on-the-ball ability is often better than people suggest, as his 17.1 forward passes per game in 2016/17 show. Tchouameni ranks even higher, with 22.5 forward passes this term.

Although a deal to sign Tchouameni would likely be an expensive one, but arguably worth it for Chelsea. Not only could they add to the firepower in midfield, but the Blues could finally replace Kante, which has been a long time coming.

He wants to join: Liverpool can replace Gomez with move for £65m "tank"

Once Luis Diaz swept a strong finish past the gallant Alphonse Areola, few onlookers sat in the London Stadium would have bet on anything other than a Liverpool victory.

West Ham United were crushed, picked apart and played with by Arne Slot’s unstoppable side. Liverpool are now eight points clear of second-placed Nottingham Forest with a game in hand – they are firm favourites for the Premier League title.

It’s all the more incredible when considering the variables. Jurgen Klopp stood down at the end of a 2023/24 campaign that tapered off for the Merseysiders; Federico Chiesa was the sole summer signing for £12.5m and he’s started just one game; arguably the three pre-eminent Liverpool players are out of contract at the end of the term, each able to discuss a pre-contract agreement with clubs from overseas.

Ibrahima Konate has also been injured for the best part of a month after a sensational start to the campaign, hailed for reaching the “elite category of defenders” under his Dutch coach’s tactics by one journalist.

The France international is still out, and Joe Gomez has joined him in the infirmary.

Joe Gomez's injury concern

Gomez scarcely featured in the Premier League over the first few months of the season, perhaps slightly knocked out of kilter after a move to Newcastle United failed to reach the final stage in August.

You wouldn’t think that the 27-year-old, Liverpool’s longest-serving first-team player, would harbour too many grudges after the botched and prospective transfer, especially now that he’s thriving in Slot’s project.

One Serie A reporter has hailed him as a “coach’s dream,” with his versatility and multi-faceted technical quality making him an invaluable asset.

injuries have been the bane of his career, however, and he appeared to pull his hamstring as Liverpool romped past West Ham, reducing him to merely 37 minutes of action and potentially an extended spell on the sidelines.

To be sure, Liverpool could do with another part at the rear, and FSG may sanction a move in 2025 after one Premier League star has expressed his desire to play under the Anfield lights.

Prem centre-back wants to sign for Liverpool

As per reports relayed by the Metro, Liverpool are interested in signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi – and the attraction is understood to be reciprocated.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi celebrates

Guehi starred for the Three Lions at Euro 2024 and has been a rock at the back of the Eagles backline for several years, with Newcastle United lodging four unsuccessful bids for his signature in the summer, the final of which totalled £65m.

With Palace keen on bringing Ben Doak – who is currently shining away from Anfield for Middlesbrough – to Selhurst Park, perhaps on loan, Liverpool could shift a few pieces to align with Slot’s vision, bolstering the backline with the perfect new part.

Ben Doak in action for Middlesbrough

Guehi is also out of contract at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. The time to pounce is nearly upon us.

What Marc Guehi would bring to Liverpool

Crystal Palace signed Guehi from Chelsea in a transfer worth £18m in 2021 and he’s since gone through the gears to reach England’s senior squad and attract interest from some of the Premier League’s finest outfits.

England defender Marc Guehi

He’s a wonderful centre-half, endowed with a lion’s bite and a cheetah’s easy movement in front of the goal. Oh, and a devotion toward protecting his goal and snuffing out attackers’ efforts. His former England U21 teammate Joe Bursik, a goalkeeper, has hailed him as “an absolute tank” of a defender in the past.

Oliver Glasner’s side have struggled to recapture the dreamy form of the last few months of the 2023/24 season, but without Guehi, there’s no doubt that the Eagles would be stuck in the pit of the Premier League.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has claimed that the Englishman is “one of those versatile CBs who can play both sides equally as comfortably,” shifting with ease. This could be crucial as Van Dijk enters the later stage of his brilliant career, for his playing time may need to be mitigated if he does indeed extend his contract and captaincy on Merseyside.

As per FBref, Guehi also ranks among the top 7% of central defenders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90, making a convincing comment on his ball-playing and carrying skills. Skills that are tailor-made for Slot’s system.

Whether Liverpool succeed in their endeavour remains to be seen and probably won’t become clear until the summer sun stretches down onto Anfield.

However, given Guehi’s dynamism, technical quality and monstrous defensive skill set, there’s every reason why he could be the perfect arrival at Liverpool, taking Slot’s system to the next level and elevating an already imperious backline.

Gomez may still want a fresh challenge, and if he does get his wish next year, this man, a man who wants to make the move, is the one to go for.

Celtic could sign their next Kuhn with swoop for exciting £5m star

Celtic are currently on course to enjoy a phenomenal season across all competitions in Brendan Rodgers’ second campaign at the club since his return in the summer of 2023.

The Northern Irish head coach won the SFA Cup and the Scottish Premiership title in his first year back, but was knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages and failed to win the League Cup.

Celtic have already lifted the League Cup this term, beating Rangers on penalties last month, and are in position to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League heading into their last two matches in the league phase.

This means that the Hoops have the chance to enjoy even more success this time around than they did last season, if they can maintain their current form across all competitions.

Rodgers has been helped by the summer business done by the club ahead of this term, with the likes of Arne Engels, Auston Trusty, and Luke McCowan, among others, all coming in.

However, it is one of his January recruits from the transfer window last year who has stepped up to star for the Scottish giants in the 2024/25 campaign so far.

Nicolas Kuhn's form this season

Rodgers swooped to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Austrian side Rapid Vienna in January 2024 on a permanent deal and he had the first five months or so to settle into life in Glasgow.

The German forward contributed with two goals and two assists in 14 league appearances during the second half of that season, which shows that the winger did not hit the ground running as a consistent star for the Hoops.

However, after that initial adaptation period and a pre-season, Kuhn has been on fire for Celtic across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign, with his ability as a scorer and a creator of goals making him a crucial player for Rodgers.

The 24-year-old wizard has racked up an amazing return of 16 goals and 11 assists in 27 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants, which means that he has averaged a goal or an assist every match.

He has been particularly impressive in the Premiership, scoring twice in the recent 3-0 win over St Mirren, as a consistent threat in the final third for the league leaders.

As you can see in the table above, Kuhn has produced more goals and ‘big chances’ created combined than he has managed league starts for Celtic, which speaks to how much quality the winger has provided at the top end of the pitch.

The left-footed star has now laid out the blueprint for how to conduct a successful January signing when bringing in a young player from abroad, as he needed a few months to adapt before being able to hit the ground running this season.

Rodgers could sign his next Kuhn by swooping to sign one of Celtic’s current transfer targets in a similar move to the one that brought the German to Parkhead last year.

Celtic's interest in wing wizard

Last month, Norwegian sports outlet Nettavisen reported that Celtic are one of the teams interested in a swoop for Sarpsborg attacker Sondre Orjasaeter in the January transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Hoops are keen to secure a deal to sign the Norway U21 international to bolster their options on the left flank, although there was no mention of how much the Norwegian side want for his services.

Orjasaeter is valued at £5m by Transfermarkt and that may provide some insight into the kind of fee that could be needed to land his signature ahead of the second half of the season.

Rodgers is reportedly eager to bring in a new left winger to compete with Daizen Maeda for a place in the starting line-up, and the Sarpsborg attacker fits the bill as a right-footed forward who predominantly plays on the left side of the attack.

Celtic could, now, repeat the masterclass they played with Kuhn last year by swooping for another young winger from abroad in a January transfer window.

Why Celtic should sign Sondre Orjasaeter

Like the German magician, Orjasaeter is a young talent with potential to grow and develop over the years to come, as he only turned 21 in November.

This means that expectations can be low at first, as they were when Kuhn failed to immediately produce consistent performances, and the winger could use the second half of this season to settle in and adjust to life in Scotland before, hopefully, pushing on next term.

The Sarpsborg starlet being a right-footed left winger also means that he can play on the opposite side to the current Celtic ace and Rodgers could have two mercurial talents on either flank, if the club can keep hold of Kuhn in the summer.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig once described the youngster as an “interesting” player and his form in the Eliteserien backs that up, as he has been in impressive form for a player of his age.

As you can see in the table above, Orjasaeter has contributed with ten goals and assists in 28 appearances in the league this season, which shows that he can provide quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

The £5m-rated star should have more assists to his name but his teammates have let him down at times with their wasteful finishing, scoring five times from 12 ‘big chances’ created.

These statistics suggest that the foundation is there for Orjasaeter to be developed into Celtic’s next version of Kuhn, as he has the ability to score and create goals but needs to find more consistency in his end product in the final third.

This is why Rodgers must push for the board to get a deal over the line for the promising young talent before the end of the January transfer window.

Tottenham hold talks with "top-quality" England player set to quit his club

A “top quality” England international has informed his club that he’s going to leave, as Tottenham Hotspur reach out and open talks with the player via representatives.

Ange Postecoglou holds transfer meetings with Johan Lange

Under-fire Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou and technical director Johan Lange will already have a good idea of how they best need to strengthen heading into the next two transfer windows, with the pair holding regular recruitment talks behind-the-scenes.

Broadcast giant Sky Sports writes that Postecoglou has been involved with Lange meetings ahead of the January window, as they discuss the potential to do business mid-season, with Spurs’ head coach under mounting pressure after a dismal run of form.

Tottenham’s last 10 matches in all competitions have been inconsistent at best, with impressive wins over the likes of Aston Villa and Man City overshadowed by dismal defeats to lowly Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town – who both sealed their first league victories of the season against Spurs.

Postecoglou’s side have also squandered early two-goal leads on multiple occasions this season – firstly against Brighton in a 3-2 defeat at the Amex, and secondly against Chelsea in their 4-3 home defeat on Sunday.

Tottenham look fragile, and while you can make a serious case they’ve lost a lot of key players to injury, their season is threatening to unravel at the midway point.

Cristian Romero is reportedly set to miss six weeks after picking up a fresh problem in his quadriceps, while the likes of Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Guglielmo Vicario are also out with long-term problems and won’t return until 2025.

Spurs also have to think beyond this season, and some very intriguing transfer opportunities are emerging from Ligue 1.

Both Lille striker Jonathan David and midfielder Angel Gomes are out of contract at the end of the season, giving interested Premier League sides a major chance to snap up either one of the in-form duo at zero cost.

Tottenham have already held talks with David’s camp, and now the same can be said of Three Lions midfielder Gomes.

Tottenham hold talks with Angel Gomes who's told Lille he's leaving

According to The Boot Room, Gomes has told Lille he’s leaving at the end of the season, and Tottenham have held talks with his representatives as they attempt to gauge his interest in a move to N17.

The former Man United gem was excellent for Lille last season, bagging eight assists in 31 Ligue 1 matches as a mainstay player for the French side, and former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to strike a bargain deal for Gomes before.

“He’s the type of quality player you want your club looking at, obviously. If there is a route back to the Premier League for him, Spurs won’t be the only suitors for him,” said Robinson to Tottenham News.

“Lee Carsley is looking more and more likely to get the England job on a permanent basis, and with that in mind, he’s going to get more minutes at international level. He’s a top-quality player.

“A move back to the Premier League won’t be out of the question. If he’s playing at the top level, you want your club to be involved in the race. He fits the mould of the type of player Spurs would sign – young, English and talented.”

Phil Salt, Jason Roy fifties lead England to victory and 2-0 series lead over Netherlands

Duo fall in the 70s but England secure victory by six wickets with 29 balls to spare

Valkerie Baynes19-Jun-2022It wasn’t exactly “Fireworks Friday” but half-centuries to Phil Salt and Jason Roy saw England to victory by six wickets and an unassailable 2-0 series lead against Netherlands at Amstelveen.Set 236 to win a match reduced to 41 overs per side after a wet outfield delayed the start by nearly three hours, England overhauled the target with 29 balls to spare ahead of the final fixture on Wednesday.Scott Edwards, standing in as captain for Pieter Seelaar – who announced his retirement while sitting out the match with a persistent back injury – led Netherlands to 235 for 7 with an excellent 78 off 73 balls.England’s response wasn’t without its hiccups, losing captain Eoin Morgan and Liam Livingstone cheaply and with Jos Buttler, the star of their world record-breaking victory in Friday’s series opener, sitting out for the chase.Roy, playing his 100th ODI after he had missed out on England’s charge when he was dismissed in the second over of the first match, helped himself to 13 runs off the first over of their reply on Sunday, including three fours off Logan van Beek, and he smashed two more off Vivian Kingma in the next. After the eight-over powerplay, the visitors were 47 without loss, compared to 33 for 1 for Netherlands, and by early in the 11th over England had already surpassed the 11 fours Netherlands scored for their entire innings.Roy brought up the team hundred with a deft cut off Aryan Dutt through backward point for four and two balls later he crunched Dutt for six over the longest boundary at deep midwicket. Two fours in three balls off Bas de Leede brought Salt to his fifty and he drove and swept three consecutive fours off Dutt before Roy chimed in, advancing and crashing Dutt over mid-off to the boundary. Having shared a 139-run opening stand with Salt, Roy got carried away next ball however, and gifted a catch to Shane Snater at short third man, clearly angry with himself to be gone for 73 off 60.Salt, too, left with a sense of promise unfulfilled but that was only by the lofty measure of his century in the first match. Eyeing back-to-back tons, he followed Roy out a short time later for a still-admirable 77 off just 54 balls, beautifully bowled by Dutt as he tried to step down to the spinner.Related

Pieter Seelaar announces retirement due to persistent back injury

England were 168 for 2 before Morgan made his second duck in as many innings, top-edging Tom Cooper to Snater at backward point. It extended a lean run for Morgan who has been troubled by injuries this year and managed just one international half-century in 18 months.Livingstone, who had shrugged off the calf muscle tightness which took him from the field during Netherlands’ futile chase in the first game, came in ahead of Buttler. His quick-fire 66 in the previous match suggested England were still on track to romp to victory but his stay was brief on this occasion when he provided Tim Pringle with his maiden wicket on international debut. Left-arm spinner Pringle, the son of former New Zealand and Netherlands medium-pacer Chris Pringle, sent down a gem that enticed Livingstone forward, beat the outside edge and pinged to top of off stump. There was still no sign of Buttler when Moeen Ali came to the crease and there were hearts in mouths when Dawid Malan, another centurion from the first fixture, was given out lbw to Dutt but he survived on review with Hawk-Eye showing the ball was headed over the stumps.Moeen levelled the scores with six then four off Pringle and after a plucky maiden from van Beek, Moeen clubbed the winning runs with a four off Snater through square leg.Earlier, David Willey had dismissed Vikramjit Singh cheaply for the second time in the series before Adil Rashid entered the attack in the ninth over and struck almost immediately, tempting Max O’Dowd into a slog-sweep with Malan leaping a long way to his left at square leg to pouch a sharp catch.Brydon Carse, in the England side for Sam Curran who is managing his return from a back stress fracture, then struck with his second ball to remove Cooper, pinned lbw by a nip-backer that struck in line with middle and leg stumps and looked to be clipping the top of leg. With just one run to his name, Edwards overturned his lbw dismissal to a Rashid delivery which was shown on review to be spinning past off stump by just enough to earn him a reprieve. He shared a 61-run stand with de Leede, whose enterprising 34 included whacking Rashid over cow corner into commentary box window.Edwards moved to 47 by slogging Livingstone over the fence – the ball dropped short of the commentators’ perch this time – and he brought up his fifty with a mow down the ground for six off Carse. With the crowd finding their voices following a subdued start given the earlier delay to proceedings, they roared to life when Willey beat Teja Nidamanuru’s attempted straight drive with one that shaped in a little to peg back his middle and off stumps, ending a 73-run stand with Edwards.Edwards prompted more cheers as he reverse-scooped Willey over third man for six to move past his unbeaten 72 scored in the first match. He was eventually run out by an excellent direct hit by Willey running in from deep midwicket and throwing down the stumps at the striker’s end as Edwards, returning for a second, dived in vain.Pringle was out for a second-ball duck, outdone by an excellent googly from Rashid, and it fell to Snater and van Beek to bump up the Netherlands’ total, Snater snatching 17 off 10 while van Beek managed 30 off 36.
