Graham Thorpe calls on England's batters to save Sydney Test

Bairstow, Buttler and Stokes backed to battle through injuries to play their part

Andrew Miller08-Jan-2022Graham Thorpe has called on England’s batters to save the Sydney Test and prove that they have absorbed the lessons of a tough campaign, as he backed the team’s walking wounded of Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes to do everything they can to be ready for what could yet prove to be their final appearances of the tour.Neither Bairstow, who sustained a blow to the thumb during his first-innings century, nor Buttler, who struggled to grip his bat while making a duck in the same innings, took the field on Saturday after being sent for X-rays, leaving Ollie Pope to step up behind the stumps – a role he performed with aplomb with four catches to equal the record for a substitute fielder. And while Thorpe insisted both men would be ready to bat when required -as would Stokes, who remained on the field despite suffering a side strain on the second day of the match – England were grateful for an extra night’s rest for each player, as openers Haseeb Hameed and Zak Crawley made it through to the close on 30 for 0 after 11 overs of resistance.Related

Usman Khawaja's twin tons keep Australia in control

How can Australian selectors leave Usman Khawaja out of fifth Test?

“With some of the injuries we’ve got, we’re going to need two, three or four of our players to really stand up and bat for a long time,” Thorpe said. “I want us to play positively, with a good mental approach, and I was pleased with the way Zak and Has went about it tonight.”They moved well, and you could see their intent, defending well and being able to put away the ball which came along to actually score off. That’s important too, because scoring runs is important for your confidence, even when you’re trying to play for a draw.”In a measure of England’s struggles with the bat in this series, the pair’s partnership has already exceeded England’s previous best for the first wicket – 23, between Hameed and Rory Burns at Brisbane. And though it wasn’t plain-sailing to the close, with Crawley gloving a lifter from Scott Boland over the slips for four, Thorpe said that the mental fortitude to roll with such moments was a vital part of any batter’s armoury.”The odd one is kicking up off a length, so the guys have got to have a clear mind that that’s going to happen from time to time and, if you’re unlucky, you’re unlucky,” Thorpe said. “Zak got a little bit of luck tonight but he needs to keep that really positive attitude to the game tomorrow.”It’s been challenging for some of them technically and mentally,” Thorpe added. “And that’s the biggest thing for the younger players who are trying to establish themselves and own a place in the team. They’ve got opportunities tomorrow to do that. To stay in the team, you have to perform [like] Jonny, who played fantastically in an innings of great courage and skill.”That’s the same thing we want to see again in our second innings. It was a good start tonight. But we need a hell of a lot more of it again tomorrow.”England have had one near-miss in a rearguard already this series, after Buttler’s doughty 26 from 207 balls was unable to carry England to safety on the final day at Adelaide. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be capable of performing to that level again after bruising his hand while keeping on the second day, but Thorpe was hopeful that the commitment he showed in that innings would rub off on his team-mates.”Each individual can assess how they play,” he said. “You saw how Jos went about it in Adelaide. I still like people to be positive in the way they’re thinking and the ability to score runs as well, because it puts you in a better place. But it’s about little blocks of time as well tomorrow. Ten overs each, trying to work together as partnerships.”We’ve obviously got some blows to some fingers, but I’m sure the lads will take whatever they need to take to get themselves into a position where they’re capable of performing tomorrow,” he added. “So they’ll all bat and they will do their very best. I know that.”However, with 98 overs scheduled on the final day, Thorpe believes that England will need to improve their decision-making if they are to avoid slumping to their fourth defeat of the series. He singled out England’s captain, Joe Root, as an example of a player who could have done better in the first innings, after edging to slip for a duck during England’s collapse on the third morning.”It was a poor shot in the first innings, and we played some poor shots, pushing at balls which you don’t need to push at,” Thorpe said. “They’re aware of it and they kick themselves when they come in. But that is the game. You have to make those decisions and get them right on the pitch.”I do believe that some of the young players in this team will have very good and long Test careers, but they have to be able to front up and accept some of their failings – whether it be technically or mentally – in periods on this tour.”I know that they’re trying to correct it. And I’m hoping that some of these younger guys will be far better players down the line with their awareness, their smartness, their decision-making absolutely key.”Everyone goes on about technique, but you’ve got to make good decisions constantly when you’re out in the middle and that requires a good temperament. And that’s what players are always being assessed on, whether they’re going to be good enough to do that down the line.”With the ball, England showed spirit in adversity – reducing Australia to 86 for 4 in their second innings before Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green took the game away again in a fifth-wicket stand of 179.”It was very tough,” Thorpe said. “At the beginning of the week, we said ‘let’s try and show a good attitude’. Let’s keep trying to turn up. Test cricket is hard sometimes, and you need individuals. I thought our bowlers kept going – Mark Wood has been incredibly unlucky at times, I thought he’s bowled fantastically well on this trip, and it was good for Jack Leach as well just to pick up [four] wickets for himself.”But this is the harsh end of the game, and our batters have also seen that as well. Tomorrow’s another opportunity.”

Liverpool player ratings vs Aston Villa: Darwin Nunez blows chance to go 10 points clear in Premier League title race as Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold earn Reds a draw

The Uruguay international missed big chances off the bench as Arne Slot's side were forced to settle for a point on the road on Wednesday

Liverpool moved eight points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League after coming from behind to earn a 2-2 draw away at Aston Villa.

A lively first half at Villa Park saw the Reds take the lead on the half-hour mark after an awful mistake from January signing Alvaro Garcia. The full-back gifted the ball to Diogo Jota, allowing the Portugal international the simple task of laying the ball off to Mohamed Salah to fire home.

Yet Villa had been causing Liverpool problems and were level within 10 minutes as the visitors failed to clear a Marcus Rashford free-kick into the box and it eventually fell to Youri Tielemans to fire home at the far post.

The hosts then stunned Liverpool in first-half stoppage time as Lucas Digne was allowed to whip the ball in for Ollie Watkins to power home a fine header and make it 2-1 heading into the break.

Liverpool hit back in the second half with Salah involved again. Trent Alexander-Arnold kicked things off with a surging run, swapped passes with Salah, and then scored with a low shot that took a big deflection off Tyrone Mings.

Slot opted to make changes and threw on Conor Bradley and Darwin Nunez in search of a winner, and Nunez was involved almost immediately but could only blaze a fine chance off-target after being teed up by Dominik Szoboszlai. The Uruguayan was then sent through again but was denied by a quick-thinking Emi Martinez, who came flying off his line to win the tackle.

But Villa remained a threat at the other end and did have the ball in the back of the net through Jacob Ramsey, only to see it ruled out for offside. Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen also had chances late on as Liverpool ended up hanging on for a point

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson Becker (5/10):

Some really shaky moments with his passing and also in the second half when he came racing out of his goal and was beaten by Rashford.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/10):

Was tested by Rashford but did OK and had some dangerous moments going forward. Scored the second via a deflection after a surging run forwards.

    Ibrahima Konate (6/10):

Rescued Alisson at the start of the second half and was fairly solid. Made some important interceptions.

    Virgil van Dijk (5/10):

Failed to sense the danger from Watkins for the goal and didn't look completely convincing against a lively Villa side.

    Andy Robertson (7/10):

Put some good deliveries into the box for Jota and Salah which deserved better.

    Ryan Gravenberch (5/10):

A really tired showing from the Dutchman. Didn't seem to know what to do or where to be for the second goal.

    Alexis Mac Allister (6/10):

Seemed to relish the physical battle and got Liverpool moving in the build-up to the second goal.

    Curtis Jones (6/10):

Some good moments, including a good surging run and shot, but not involved enough.

    Mohamed Salah (7/10):

Not his best game, but still scored the opener and set up Alexander-Arnold for the equaliser.

    Diogo Jota (5/10):

Set up Salah's goal but a really poor miss after Villa had equalised. Hit the crossbar in the second half.

    Dominik Szoboszlai (6/10):

An energetic showing, had a shot saved and teed up Nunez for a glorious chance that was wasted.

A dismal display off the bench. Missed a glorious chance from seven yards straight after coming on, beaten by Martinez in another opportunity and then wasted an attack by passing the ball straight out of play

    Conor Bradley (6/10):

Tough night for the substitute who was forced off before the end with an injury.

    Luis Diaz (6/10):

Given the last 10 minutes but couldn't conjure a winner.

    Jarell Quansah (N/A):

    Late sub to replace Bradley.

    Arne Slot (6/10):

Will be disappointed his team missed the chance to fully extend their lead at the top of the table, but may be relieved to come away with a point after Villa's strong finish.

Saqib Mahmood not thinking of Ashes as BBL debut looms

Fast bowler potentially one injury away from a call-up to England’s Ashes squad

The BBL shapes as an ideal T20 World Cup audition for Sydney Thunder express paceman Saqib Mahmood, who is also one injury away from a recall to England’s Test squad.Mahmood was a contentious omission from the visitors’ Ashes plans. He was part of the England Lions side that faced Australia A last week, and will now make his BBL debut in Sunday night’s Gabba clash with Brisbane Heat.Mahmood, part of England’s Test squad earlier this year, looms as an obvious addition should anything happen to one of their frontline Ashes quicks.”I’ve got a good base, got my loads up in Brisbane. It’s just about keeping those loads going for the rest of the BBL,” he told AAP. “A lot of the skills I’m practising, I’d probably have to put into use if called up. But I’m purely thinking about the Big Bash at the moment.”That same sentiment applies to next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia. However, a productive BBL stint will boost Mahmood’s chances of adding to an international career that has featured seven ODIs and nine T20s.One of 15 Englishmen taking part in the BBL, Mahmood also acutely aware of his country’s white-ball depth.”In world sport, it’s potentially the hardest side to break into,” he said. “But if you play in that side, it shows your game is in a very good place and you take confidence from that. If I perform for the Thunder, it’ll hold me in good stead if I were to come back with the World Cup squad.”The fast bowler jumped at the chance to link up with Thunder mentor Trevor Bayliss, who started England’s white-ball revolution and signed off soon after their successful 2019 ODI World Cup.”Being around this environment, and around Trevor, will improve me as a cricketer,” Mahmood said. “I’ve always wanted to play cricket in Australia … you obviously get a lot more pace and bounce compared to back home.”Mahmood admitted he needed a crash course from Bayliss and team-mates when it came to one BBL innovation.”I’m still coming to terms with the power surge a little bit,” he said. “For some reason I thought it was double runs, I don’t know why. But I’m excited by it. When there’s new rules … I’m someone who likes to make the most of it.”I like to bowl in those situations [with fielding restrictions]. There’s every chance I’ll bowl in the power surge, so I’d better get used to it.”

Tata Group replaces Vivo as IPL title sponsors for 2022 and 2023 seasons

A year after returning as the title sponsors of the IPL, following a suspension, Vivo has stepped away from the deal and Tata Group, the Indian business conglomerate, has stepped in. The Tata Group, which has varied business interests both in India and overseas, will be the IPL title sponsors for the next two seasons (2022 and 2023), after the IPL governing council gave the approvals on Tuesday. The governing council has also finally provided the letters of intent to the two new IPL teams – based in Lucknow and in Ahmedabad – which now have the ownership rights to operate the franchises they paid record sums to buy last October. In the wake of the military clashes at the India-China border in June 2020, BCCI decided to sever ties with Vivo, a Chinese mobile and technology company. Vivo had bagged the title sponsorship rights for the period of 2017 to 2022 for approximately US$ 341 million, as an extension of its two-year association from 2015.But, for the 2020 season, BCCI turned to Dream XI, the gaming company, as an interim replacement for Vivo. However, Vivo made a comeback ahead of the 2021 season. At the time, according to a PTI report, the company was given a “one year concession” since it had missed the 2020 season. Why the delay in clearing CVC?
On October 25, CVC Capital, a major global private equity fund, bid nearly US$ 750 million to buy the rights to own the Ahmedabad franchise. It was the second-highest bid, only behind that of the RP Sanjeev Goenka Group, which bid nearly US$940 million to bag the rights for the Lucknow franchise. Both the new teams were originally asked by the IPL to buy a maximum of three players by December 25. However, the entire process was stalled after the BCCI decided not give the letter of intent to CVC when it emerged that the company has investments in two betting companies overseas. With gambling being illegal in India, the BCCI appointed a group of legal experts before it could clear CVC. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the BCCI gave the nod after it established that the IPL investment comes from CVC’s Asian funds, and there is no direct or indirect link with the betting companies CVC owns, as those investments come from its overseas funds. Both the new franchises now have about ten days to finalise the list players they want before the IPL finalises the auction pool. The auction is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.

Chelsea star was nearly sold under Poch, now he’s become undroppable

Chelsea managed a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested match against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, taking them third in the Premier League on 19 points, winning five games, drawing four, and losing two in their opening 11 games.

Despite having slightly less of the ball (49% possession), they managed to take 17 shots, creating one big chance and generating 1.28 xG.

Enzo Maresca’s side are now averaging 54.7% possession (the fifth highest in the division), 14 shots per game (ninth highest in the division), and 12.8 shots against them per 90.

But it’s some of the individual performances that have improved under Maresca that are just as impressive, with many players improving under the Italian since he took over from Mauricio Pochettino.

One of those happens to be Pedro Neto – who scored against the Gunners – but there are some other notable names alongside the Portuguese…

Players thriving under Maresca

Levi Colwill is one of the main examples, being used heavily as a left-back last season under Pochettino, and coming under some flack for his performances in that position.

But now under Maresca, back in his best position, Colwill is orchestrating games from the back, bringing another level of physicality to his game, and forming a great partnership at the back with Wesley Fofana. Between them, they boast a pass success rate of 89.3% and 89.5% respectively; not bad at all.

Another name is Moises Caicedo, who had a rocky start to life at Chelsea under Pochettino, following his £115m move to the Blues in the summer of 2023. Caicedo did have a very solid secondnd half of the season under Pochettino, but he’s taken it up another level under Maresca yet again.

The 23-year-old has made the second most tackles (38) and the joint-fifth most interceptions (18) in the Premier League this season, putting out fires in the middle of the park, and kick-starting attacks for the Blues, even providing two assists.

Moises Caicedo celebrates for Chelsea

But perhaps the biggest improvement is a star who was reportedly set for the axe under Pochettino, Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard put in yet another big performance against Arsenal.

Marc Cucurella's performance in numbers vs Arsenal

Tasked with defending against one of the league’s best wingers in Bukayo Saka, Cucurella was absolutely excellent at minimising his ability to affect the game.

Winning four of his six ground duels, making three tackles, three interceptions, one block and two clearances, it was a superb defensive display from the Spanish defender.

The 26-year-old has quickly become an undroppable figure in Maresca’s side, showing the tenacity and aggression the Italian manager likes in his defenders, giving them the ability to go man for man.

The Spain international has made 12 appearances this season, contributing to two clean sheets, and totaling 920 minutes played.

Cucurella has been used in a variety of ways already this season, becoming the left-sided centre-back in a back three, inverting into midfield, and even appearing further up the pitch in the left half spaces, operating as a number ten at times.

This allows Maresca to platform others in the team, to put them in their best positions to succeed, with Cucurella being a key man to allow that.

The form of Cucurella, mixed with the profile of the defender which suits Maresca so well, makes the 26-year-old undroppable, as Chelsea face Leicester City in their next game after the international break.

Kylian Mbappe has been warned Caen are "dying and will die" as the Real Madrid superstar's ownership of the French club becomes a nightmare.

The World Cup-winning forward became the majority stakeholder at Caen in July 2024. His arrival was greeted with excitement by a long-suffering fanbase, but relegation into the third tier of French football for the first time in 41 years is now very much on the cards.

Supporters have been venting their frustration, with a “SMC is not your toy” banner sending a very clear message to Mbappe after he contribute to the decision to part with head coach Nicolas Seube in December. His successor, Bruno Baltazar, has also been moved on as Caen find themselves stuck in a rut.

DID YOU KNOW?

Mbappe has tired to lift spirits in the camp, saying in a message ahead of the club’s latest fixture: “It's important for me to be here. I want to show my support, to be in contact with everyone and for them to know that they count on me, and especially in the situation we're in. If I'm here it's because I believe in the project. I wanted to have come earlier but it was impossible. I told them that I was with them and that they had to believe. And I saw a group that is not resigned and wants to change the results.

“I think that with the quality of the team and the support of the fans, things can change and I hope that this is a turning point. In football, we have seen that nothing is impossible. There is a lack of confidence, but I think that a good result can change the team's spiral. I understand the frustration of the people, as I have told them personally, because I have not been through this before. It is normal to be angry, but the people support, fill the stadium and our mission is to give our best.”

GettyWHAT EX-PSG STAR SAID

While Mbappe is doing his best to stay positive, former Paris Saint-Germain star Jerome Rothen has told of why a surprising venture from the Real Madrid ‘Galactico’ appears destined to fail. Rothen said: “The situation at Caen is critical. The club is going through serious difficulties at all levels. Mbappe's management has been problematic since he took over at Caen. He had the opportunity to come and explain to the players, the employees or the mayor his vision of things at the Stade Malherbe, but he didn't want to.

“When he had days off, he could have gone to Caen instead of going to Sweden. Now it's too late. This club is dying, and it will die. It will be in the National League and it will be lucky if it gets back on its feet.”

Liverpool eyeing move for Barcelona star to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on signing “one of the best defenders in the world”, seeing him as a possible replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Latest Liverpool news

It is a busy period at Anfield currently, with plenty happening both on and off the pitch, whether it be injury problems, contract concerns or transfer rumours.

In Sunday’s 2-1 win at home to Chelsea, Liverpool suffered the blow of losing Diogo Jota to injury, meaning he could be out of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash away to RB Leipzig. He isn’t the only potential absentee alongside the likes of Alisson and Harvey Elliott, however, with Conor Bradley also missing the weekend action with a knock, making him a doubt once again.

Conor Bradley in action for Liverpool

Meanwhile, journalist James Pearce has confirmed “positive news” regarding Virgil van Dijk’s future at Liverpool, saying that the Dutchman is in discussions with the club over a contract extension, ahead of his current deal expiring next summer.

In terms of potential incoming signings in the near future, Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a rumoured option for the Reds, as they look to ensure that they find a long-term replacement for Van Dijk, even though the captain still has plenty of years left in him.

Liverpool want "one of the best defenders in the world"

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, seeing him as an option to be Alexander-Arnold’s successor at right-back, should he fail to agree an extension at Anfield. The 25-year-old’s versatility also allows him to shine at centre-back, which could appeal to Arne Slot, and he has proven himself as a top-level player for a number of years now.

It should be stressed that Liverpool fans shouldn’t want Kounde to be coming in at all, should it be at the expense of Alexander-Arnold, considering the thought of the vice-captain leaving in 2025 is grim, such is his standing as one of the best right-backs of his generation.

That being said, if the worst-case scenario did happen and the Reds’ vice-captain decides to move on, likely to Real Madrid, then the Barcelona ace would be a great option to replace him.

The France international is such a steady performer, not necessarily possessing Alexander-Arnold’s flair, but being hailed for his defensive brilliance by Xavi earlier this year: “He was one of the transfers that I asked for. He’s one of the best defenders in the world right now. Stopping Mbappé was a collective effort. Kounde did amazing against Mbappe but Lamine [Yamal] also helped him a lot.”

As mentioned, Kounde can excel at both right-back and centre-back, which is an added bonus, and he is the same age as Alexander-Arnold, meaning he still has so much of his career ahead of him.

Major "positive news" on Liverpool contract talks with Virgil van Dijk

Finally some good news on the contract front.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 21, 2024

The idea of the Frenchman in a Liverpool shirt is exciting, but only if it’s not because he’s come in for their creative maestro, as supporters desperately hope that he extends his stay at Anfield.

Scouts sent: Liverpool line up £67m Salah heir with a "wand of a left foot"

It’s been quite the start to life at the helm for Arne Slot, who has inherited Jurgen Klopp’s squad at Liverpool and recorded 11 victories in 12 matches across all competitions thus far – a club record.

The Premier League’s table toppers, who have also won each of their three opening Champions League contests, boast one of the most formidable frontlines across Europe, with Slot’s system also reviving Virgil van Dijk’s defence to redoubtable status.

But there’s an elephant in the room, and it’s starting to become a noisy one. Skipper Van Dijk, homegrown vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold and all-powerful talisman Mohamed Salah are just over two months away from being free to negotiate with suitors overseas for a pre-contract agreement.

The superstars’ Liverpool deals are firmly into their final year, and though it’s unthinkable, contingency plans must be taken. The £350k-per-week Salah is the highest-paid player on the books, and, understandably, FSG are looking at long-term successors.

Liverpool weighing up move for Salah heir

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool and Arsenal have sent scouts to watch Arda Güler in action and will pounce if anything changes in the prodigious talent’s situation at Real Madrid.

The Turkey international, 19, signed for Los Blancos in July 2023 for a reported €20m (£17m) fee, but he’s struggling to find space in Carlo Ancelotti’s superteam and may move for pastures new if the situation does not improve.

Newcastle United were interested earlier in 2024 and Spanish sources claimed that a bid of €80m (£67m) would convince Real to sell, though this exorbitant valuation might deter suitors such as thrifty Liverpool.

Arda Güler's talent in numbers

Replacing Salah with a teenager might feel like a foolish move, but Güler is a remarkable player and has already showcased his ability to step up in big moments, as he did for his nation at Euro 2024 this summer.

And he’s hardly flattered to deceive when blessed with football on the prestigious Santiago Bernabeu pitch, having scored six goals from just 23 appearances, of which only eight have come from the outset.

Güler, let’s be clear, is jockeying for the agency of success against the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior – de facto Ballon d’Or winner – and Rodrygo, with Endrick and Brahim Diaz also pushing for minutes of their own.

Spurs transfer target Arda Guler in action for Real Madrid.

His lack of action is by no means a negation of the stunning skillset that impelled Florentino Perez and his transfer team to fork out funds for his signature, right at the fledgling phase.

As per FBref, despite his lack of minutes, Güler ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 6% for pass completion and the top 10% for tackles won per 90.

Examine Güler’s statistics from another angle. As per Sofascore, the winger has only started three La Liga games this term but has created three big chances, completed 88% of his passes, averaged 1.3 key passes per outing and won 61% of his ground duels.

Van Dijk, by comparison, has only won 50% of his ground duels in the Premier League under Slot’s management – though there’s no need to worry about that one.

Güler’s metrics point toward worth, such worth, that will have convinced Liverpool bosses, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, that this is a player worth investing in.

Of course, the only way that the £83k-per-week talent would be signed by Liverpool is if Salah does indeed leave at the end of the term, but if he does, this might just be the perfect young buck to keep Slot’s attack purring.

Why Arda Güler could succeed Salah

Salah might turn 33 next summer but there’s little notion that this supreme athlete is set to suffer a nosedive in performance any time soon.

He’s scored seven goals and added seven more assists across just 12 matches so far in 2024/25, starting 11 times. Pundit Gary Neville recently hailed the prolific winger as a “superstar” and the praise couldn’t be more apt.

With each passing season, never falling off, Salah is proving that he’s indeed one of the finest to ply their art on English soil, and his efforts under Slot’s leadership might just hold sway in the pursuit of the biggest silver prizes.

Salah’s ball-striking ability has foiled incalculable defences, but in Güler, FSG might just find the second coming, especially since he’s been hailed as a “magician with a wand of a left foot” by one scout.

Though the Egyptian’s absurd consistency in front of goal is something that simply cannot be replicated, Real’s teenage talent has showcased a clinical edge and carries the full package besides.

160 goals for Liverpool in the Premier League (plus two for Chelsea) leave him joint-ninth in the all-time scoring charts, with just 16 goals required to leapfrog Chelsea legend Frank Lampard into sixth place.

Replacing him is a daunting task indeed, and even if Salah does pen fresh terms, extending his time at the club by a couple more years, prudently bringing in an heir would be a good call.

Mohamed Salah against Ipswich Town

Who better than Güler? Though Real Madrid will view the Turk in their long-term plans, he might not find regular minutes coming his way for several seasons yet, and Liverpool can be sure to put together a compelling case to move to Anfield.

A magician of a young player, this would be a statement of intent to send waves of excitement rippling across Merseyside.
