The Red Dragons are eager to bolster their ranks heading into the business end of another promotion push. Phil Parkinson has his side riding high in League One, with a 1-1 ‘Hollywood Derby’ draw with Birmingham keeping them third in the table.

Wrexham have been linked with moves to get another striker on board, as they seek even more firepower, but finding suitable recruits at the right price is never easy when navigating the winter market. Reynolds, McElhenney and Co are finding that out again in 2025.

WHAT PHIL PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson told when asked about recruitment in North Wales: “I think, like everybody, you’re always looking for an extra player or two and yeah, we are looking – hard – and had some bids rejected.

“It’s not easy because the players we’re now looking at are at that Championship-level quality and you’re always competing with teams at the top of this division and the lower end of the Championship for those signatures, so it’s not easy.”

Wrexham have seen approaches for Liverpool starlet Jayden Danns and Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith speculated on, but Parkinson was giving little away when quizzed on those supposed targets. Hull City winger Ryan Longman is, however, expected to arrive in a £500,000 deal.

CSK toast 'very special innings' as faith in Ruturaj Gaikwad pays off

“Obviously one of my top innings till now because of the pressure we were in; the senior batters returned to the pavilion so I had to grind it.”

Sidharth Monga20-Sep-20212:40

Manjrekar: Not many bowlers have scored off Bumrah like Gaikwad did

One of the things IPL teams take pride in is giving opportunities to the next big player. Ruturaj Gaikwad was that next big player last year for Chennai Super Kings. Then everything went wrong for them. Gaikwad himself came down with Covid-19, and when he came back, he got off to a poor start: scores of 0, 5 and 0 in his first three matches. If there’s a team you want to make a bad start at, though, it is Super Kings. Their management trusts their scouting and their own judgement enough to not make hasty decisions. “When Mahi [MS Dhoni] is around and everyone in CSK management, once they back you, they don’t make you think [worry about] anything,” Gaikwad said. “Just have to be positive. Always in good spirit, good mind space. Obviously helps a lot.”Related

As it happened: CSK go top

As the season ended, Gaikwad got himself three consecutive half-centuries but at strike rates between 126 and 136. Two of them came in fairly easy chases, and Ravindra Jadeja helped him out in the third with an 11-ball 31. Before this match, he had played only five innings of 30 or more at quicker than 150.This season, though, Gaikwad has kicked on higher, but his role in the side remains one that allows others around him to score at higher strike rates. He is only asked to take the lead if he makes it to the second half of the innings. In this match, against rivals Mumbai Indians who led them 6-1 in recent times, Gaikwad would need to do it all: shore up his side after a collapse, make sure he is there in the end and then take the lead in the final few overs. The hitting was clean, and it involved taking runs off Jasprit Bumrah apart from consigning Trent Boult to his worst over in T20 cricket. When it comes off, and when it is a player you backed early on, it gives the management special satisfaction.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

“We have had very big tabs on him for some time,” Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming said. “Even the last time we were here we rushed him back probably too early given the shape he was in from Covid, but that’s how much we regard and respect we have for his ability.”Today’s innings was very special. It is okay to play an innings in a high-scoring game and dominate but when you are the one to get a score to give your team a chance then it is even more special. The way he went about his work, absorbing pressure and then the ability to accelerate towards the end, really was down to his hand that we were able to create any pressure whatsoever. It was a remarkable innings really.”ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats put the innings in perspective. Gaikwad scored 88 on the board but according to Smart Stats, which contextualises an effort with match situation, because of the phase of the innings and the kind of bowling faced, Gaikwad’s knock was worth 114.14.”Obviously one of my top innings till now because of the pressure we were in,” Gaikwad said. “Early wickets. All the senior batters returned to the pavilion. I had to grind it, bat 10-12 overs, give myself time, just create a partnership, push for whatever you can: 120-130, then slowly, 140 was possible, then 150 became possible. I think it was just a matter of spending time on the wicket.”Super Kings’ faith in Gaikwad is paying off, but it is no miracle. They have made the changes required – mainly in taking their batting deeper – to allow them to play quicker during the middle overs especially, which in turn lets Gaikwad be the anchor for them. It’s not everyday that Gaikwad will need to perform such rescue acts, but Super Kings will be glad to know he has that extra gear.

Ange struck gold on Celtic star who’s now worth more than Idah & Engels

If there were any doubts over whether investing £9m into Adam Idah would be a wise move, Celtic’s number nine is swiftly easing those concerns amid what has been another impressive week at Paradise.

The Republic of Ireland international first raced home to round off Wednesday night’s thumping 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, prior to proving something of a rescue man after producing a quick-fire double to help see off a spirited Falkirk side on Sunday afternoon.

That latest brace against Championship opposition has now taken the 23-year-old’s tally to 12 goals in just 25 games since initially joining the club on loan in January. Not bad going for a player whom Celtic and Norwich City hero, Chris Sutton, suggested was a “long way from the finished article” upon making the move to Glasgow earlier this year.

The former Carrow Road starlet has quickly won over those at Parkhead, with the same situation now occurring with the summer’s other marquee signing, Arne Engels, with the promising Belgian helping to ease the blow of Matt O’Riley’s long-awaited departure.

Arne Engels' start at Celtic

Football can be a cruel mistress, can’t it. O’Riley, Celtic’s Mr Dependable for over two years – having scored 27 goals in 124 games in total – finally secured a dream move to the Premier League this summer, only to pick up a nasty injury just nine minutes into his Brighton and Hove Albion debut.

Matt O'Riley

Not only has the Denmark international endured a difficult beginning in his new surroundings, but the playmaker will also have to observe the rise of a new star in his place back in Scotland, with that man Engels beginning to establish himself in Brendan Rodgers’ midfield trio.

It is, of course, early days, but the Old Firm side’s record buy – who cost a reported £11m from Bundesliga side Augsburg – has already slotted in smoothly, chipping in with four goals and assists in as many games thus far.

Described as a “machine” by teammate Liam Scales, the 21-year-old is already starting to repay his hefty transfer fee, with the hope that he can continue to build on this stunning start in green and white.

Consistency over an extended period is required, however, something that a certain Cameron Carter-Vickers has shown ever since his arrival back in 2021 under Ange Postecoglou.

Carter-Vickers' market value

There’s no getting away from what was a worryingly shaky start against Falkirk on Sunday, with the visitors taking a shock 2-1 lead into the break to spark fears of a stunning, surprise upset.

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers

It is hard to imagine such a scenario having occurred had Celtic’s centre-back “warrior” – as hailed by ex-Rangers man Alan Hutton – been on the field, however, with Rodgers’ men simply a different outfit when Carter-Vickers starts at the heart of the defence.

The USA international was particularly imperious in midweek in European competition, recording a 95% pass accuracy rate, while also winning four of his five ground duels having been rarely troubled on the night.

Described as the “best defender in Scotland” by the man who brought him to the club, Postecoglou, the 26-year-old has been integral to the Hoops’ latest period of dominance in Scottish football, having now made 122 appearances in all competitions to date.

Such form – which includes five successive clean sheets in the league this season – has also been paralleled by the former Tottenham Hotspur man’s stunning rise in value following his eventual £6m permanent capture in 2022, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at around £12m – level with Kyogo Furuhashi as the most valuable player in the squad.

Slot must drop Jota and finally unleash Liverpool’s "unstoppable" star

The rip-roaring Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool is very much over by this point, with Arne Slot’s side not quite firing on all cylinders but definitely proving that they can craft a successful campaign.

Last weekend’s Anfield defeat against Nottingham Forest was a reality check, however. The former Feyenoord boss has tactical nous in abundance and has inherited a squad of elite class. But Liverpool were imperfect last year and flaws have not been eradicated with the spinning of the wheel.

Three successive victories in the Premier League – with not one goal conceded and Manchester United left nursing grievous injuries – cast an air of invincibility about Slot’s Liverpool, but now we can see that there is much work to do if those at the summit of English football are to be toppled.

Bournemouth turn up at Anfield today, looking to avenge a loss against Chelsea last week that they will feel hard done by. Liverpool must put them away.

Liverpool team news

Alisson Becker is a fitness doubt for this afternoon’s clash, having picked up a muscular injury in training. Most Liverpool fans would tell you that the Brazilian is the best in the world, but he has missed 40 games due to injury or illness since 2019/20, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper.

He joins Harvey Elliott on the sidelines, who is still out for at least one month after fracturing his foot with England U21s. Slot did not reveal any further bad news, though did suggest that he will ring one or two changes after the victory in midweek.

He sang the praises of Diogo Jota, claiming that he “has done really well in the last games”, but given that the Portuguese forward has started every fixture this season, he might want to rotate him out for this one.

Why Slot should consider dropping Diogo Jota

Jota has long suffered from a poor fitness record. Signing for Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, the 27-year-old has since scored 57 goals and added 20 assists across 150 matches, winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup twice.

Diogo Jota in-article graphic

He ranks among the top 2% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals scored, the top 20% for assists and the top 19% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, with a high work rate and dynamic approach to his craft that has clearly won Slot over.

But he hasn’t scored since the opening day, with the goal a relatively easy one to convert too. The versatile forward, moreover, has missed three big chances across his past three matches and is struggling to showcase underlying metrics that suggest his position at the spearhead of Liverpool’s starting line-up is immovable – having particularly struggled against Man United, as indicated below…

There is Cody Gakpo to consider. The Dutchman ripped AC Milan to shreds earlier in the week and will be hoping to earn his first Premier League start of the season, but he is at his most effective on the left wing, so should he receive the nod, it must come at the expense of Luis Diaz.

That leaves that man. We all know who. He’s ready to announce himself after a summer of sweeping change. Darwin Nunez deserves to start.

Slot must unleash Liverpool's Darwin Nunez

Nunez has made a comedy of ball-striking errors since completing a move to Liverpool in a deal rising to a club-record £85m fee in 2022.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Frustrating? Yes. Mercurial? Yes. Brilliant? Oh yes. Nunez crackles with electric energy and brings a kind of protean skillset that allows him to earn unceasing goalscoring opportunities while keeping defenders guessing with sharp, snappy movements and deft passing into space.

But he does come with his sticking points. Nunez, still only 25, has one of the most promising attacking styles in the Premier League but he still hasn’t pieced it all together. As the table below highlights, there is plenty still to be desired.

He’s made a bit of a name for himself as Liverpool’s “agent of chaos”, a moniker that doesn’t always play to his strengths, in truth. Nunez is erratic and lacks the composed temperament that is requisite for success if one is to become a high-class European striker.

Erling Haaland, for instance, bears all the semblance of a slab of ice when placed into shooting range. Klopp once called Nunez “unstoppable” when at his best, but that level needs to be sustained to some degree similar to that of the iceman down the M60.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Nunez does deserve to be unleashed, though; we haven’t had a real taste of the Uruguay international’s skills since Klopp left. On the note of his nationality, Marcelo Bielsa implements a 4-3-2-1 system with Uruguay and Nunez has thrived as the focal frontman.

Klopp, conversely, operated with a deeper-sitting, machine-like midfield that worked industriously to facilitate the roaming of Mohamed Salah and, historically, Sadio Mane in the frontline, with Roberto Firmino, for example, deployed as a sort of playmaking striker to knit it all together.

Sound convoluted? It was a bit of a byzantine way of pulling toward power at the top of the footballing pyramid, but Slot prefers a more controlled and cultured method, one that has seen Dominik Szoboszlai move away from the heart of the engine room and back into his favoured number ten position.

This creates a triangular shape to Liverpool’s centre, and allows Nunez to press higher up and run run run. The £140k-per-week talent ranks among the top 17% of strikers for progressive carries, the top 10% for assists, the top 13% for shot-creating actions and the top 17% for tackles won per 90.

Theoretically, then, he could seamlessly play the role of Jota, with a fluid approach to his attacking play and a defensive willingness, off the ball effort, that Liverpool’s new tactical chief demands from his players.

Oh, start him Slot, go on. Bournemouth are an aggressive and front-footed type of team and they will fall into the Redmen’s maw if they are not careful, pushing ahead and being carved open by lightning-snap breaks – mixed into Slot’s more control-focused style, of course.

Liverpool star looked "like Coutinho" when he joined, then Slot sold him

Will the Reds come to rue this decision?

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 19, 2024

Nunez is perfect for such a task, and with the games coming thick and fast from domestic and continental angles, surely it’s time to take him off the leash.

Leeds messed up by selling a goalkeeper who’s now worth more than Meslier

Leeds United’s summer transfer window was full of ups and downs as they lost several key players and were able to snap up new recruits to bolster their squad.

After the Whites lost 1-0 to Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley in May, the likes of Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, and Glen Kamara all left on permanent deals to join top-flight clubs.

The West Yorkshire outfit finished third in the Championship in the regular season but were unable to secure promotion via the play-offs, which resulted in a number of their top performers moving on.

Those exits did allow the club to swoop for the likes of Joe Rodon, Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell, and Jayden Bogle, among others, though, to strengthen the playing squad.

Leeds did not, however, decide to strengthen their goalkeeping options, beyond the addition of Alex Cairns as a veteran third-choice, after Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow spent the 2023/24 campaign as the first and second-choice.

You could argue that their decision not to bolster that position could turn to be a mistake, as Meslier’s form in the Championship over the past 14 months or so has been far from perfect.

Illan Meslier's Championship form

The French shot-stopper was the club’s number one in the Premier League for three years before they were relegated from the top-flight in the 2022/23 campaign, as the goalkeeper let in 12.4 more than expected based on the post-shot xG value of the efforts on his goal.

Relegation to the Championship provided the players with a chance to dominate matches and showcase the best of their abilities whilst winning games on a regular basis, rather than scrapping it out at the bottom of the table fighting for survival.

For Meslier, however, it meant that he faced fewer shots and did not have as many chances to show off his shot-stopping quality, which meant that his mistakes were far more noticeable.

The 24-year-old dud ranked within the bottom 31% of goalkeepers in the division for percentage of crosses claimed (4.9%) and ranked within the bottom 36% for post-shot xG minus goals allowed per 90 (0.07).

Meslier ended the season with 3.1 more goals conceded than expected based on the post-shot xG of the efforts against him, which shows that the Frenchman underperformed as a shot-stopper whilst also being underwhelming when it came to coming off his line to collect crosses.

This season, the left-footed titan ranks within the bottom 28% of goalkeepers for post-shot xG minus goals allowed per 90 (0.10) and his colossal error against Sunderland plays a part in that.

As you can see in the clip above, Meslier had a howler against the Black Cats in the 97th minute on Friday night, and his error cost his team two points at the Stadium of Light.

The French colossus needs to improve to show that he can be a reliable shot-stopper for Leeds moving forward, as he is now in his fifth full season as the number one and is still making plenty of mistakes.

Things could have been so different for the Whites, though, as they once had a goalkeeper who is now better, and more valuable, than Meslier – Elia Caprile.

Elia Caprile's Leeds career

In January 2020, midway through the club’s promotion-winning season under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds swooped to sign the teenager from Chievo Verona.

Caprile went on to keep five clean sheets in 19 matches for the U21 side at Thorp Arch before joining Pro Patria in the third tier of Italian football on loan in the 2021/22 campaign.

The young stopper kept 12 clean sheets in 36 league matches during that loan spell but that was not enough to convince Victor Orta or Bielsa that he had a long-term future at the club.

They cashed in on the promising talent in the summer of 2022, as Serie B outfit Bari came in and secured his services for an undisclosed fee, which Transfertmarkt reported to be around €1.75m (£1.5m).

In the subsequent season, Meslier conceded 12.4 more goals than expected based on post-shot xG as Leeds were relegated from the Premier League and Caprile kept 14 clean sheets and saved 77% of the shots against him in 37 Serie B games.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

His form for the second division outfit earned him a big move in the summer of 2023, a year on from his exit from Elland Road, to Serie A champions Napoli, and he has developed into a player Daniel Farke would love to have in his team.

Elia Caprile's current market value

At the time of writing (07/10/2024), Football Transfers has the Italian goalkeeper’s current Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at a whopping €16.7m (£13.7m).

Meanwhile, Meslier, who was backed by the club instead of Caprile, has a current xTV of €15.4m (£12.8m), which means that the former Whites man is currently worth more than the Frenchman.

The Napoli star, who was once lauded as a “superstar” by scout Jacek Kulig, has made three appearances in the Serie A so far this season for Antonio Conte’s side, saving 75% of the shots against him, after impressing enough on loan with Empoli last term to earn a place in the first-team squad.

As you can see in the table above, Caprile prevented 0.96 goals in 23 appearances for Empoli in the Italian top-flight during the 2023/24 campaign.

Whereas, Meslier struggled at times in the Championship, letting in 4.49 more than expected, in his 44 appearances for Leeds under Farke.

The Empoli loanee also ranked within the top 11% of goalkeepers in the Serie A for percentage of crosses stopped (7.9%), whilst Meslier – as aforementioned – ranked in the bottom 31% for percentage of crosses stopped (4.9%) in the league last term.

These statistics show that Caprile significantly outperformed the Frenchman as both a shot-stopper and a dominant box presence, whilst playing at a higher level.

Therefore, Farke would love to have the 23-year-old Italian available to him as he appears to be an upgrade on Meslier, who the club kept hold of whilst allowing the former Chievo youngster to leave.

Leeds signed Meslier instead of a GK who Messi now thinks is "the best"

The Whites once wanted to sign a goalkeeper who now stars in the Premier League.

ByDan Emery Oct 6, 2024

This is why Bielsa and Orta messed up by selling the youngster to Bari as they did not give him a chance to prove himself at Elland Road. If they had, Leeds may have had a better goalkeeper available to them right now.

Peter Moores extends Nottinghamshire tenure after interest from PCB

Peter Moores, the Nottinghamshire head coach, has signed a contract extension with the county after links with the vacant Pakistan role.ESPNcricinfo understands that Moores, who coached England across two spells from 2007-09 and 2014-15, was among the PCB’s preferred candidates for the Pakistan head coach job after Misbah-ul-Haq stepped down earlier this month, with the board keen to appoint a foreign replacement. But Moores has committed his future to Nottinghamshire, signing a new three-year deal which will see him continue in his current role until at least the end of the 2024 season.Moores’ tenure at Nottinghamshire has included three trophies – the T20 Blast/Royal London Cup double in 2017 and a second Blast title last summer – and after a winless run in first-class cricket that stretched for 1,043 days, they have made significant improvements this summer and are one of four teams in contention for the County Championship title heading into the final round of games.Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said in a club statement that Moores’ record was “as good as anyone’s in the county game” and highlighted his role in the club’s ability to recruit players from elsewhere, such as Ben Duckett, Joe Clarke and Haseeb Hameed.”We have been a force in the limited-overs game throughout Pete’s time in charge and, during the past couple of seasons, we have seen a young side make significant progress in the County Championship as well,” Newell said. “The three white-ball trophies the club has won, as well as the consistency shown in qualifying for the latter stages, constitutes a record that’s as good as anyone’s in the county game.”Meanwhile, strides were made during the shortened 2020 season to make us more competitive in red-ball cricket and, this year, we have been back to where we want to be in terms of our performances in the first-class game.”Pete’s presence within our set-up has been a key factor in terms of our recruitment because people want to work with him, and he has also successfully committed to bringing through home-grown players with the likes of Lyndon James, Liam Patterson-White and Joey Evison all set to play a big part for the club long into the future.”

Rain washes out first T20I after Jemimah Rodrigues' 49* on return

Earlier, Ashleigh Gardner dismissed both Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma after a frenetic start

Shashank Kishore07-Oct-2021No Result India and Australia split points after the first T20I was abandoned with just 15.2 overs into the first innings. Australia lead the multi-format series 7-5, with two games and four points still up for grabs. In whatever little play was possible, India made a strong statement with the bat, well placed at 131 for 4, with momentum firmly with them, when a drizzle that turned into a downpour eventually forced the umpires to call off the game.Jemimah Rodrigues made the most of her opportunity, her first of the tour, by tiding over what could have been a potentially tricky phase for India after they lost their openers inside four overs. Rodrigues did so by playing authentic cricket shots and running hard between the wickets. Once set, she also brought out the deft touches. She was unbeaten on 49 off 36 balls. At the other end, Richa Ghosh, who India are trying to groom as a wicketkeeper-batter in white-ball cricket, rode on oodles of luck and some thick edges to make an unbeaten 13-ball 17 before the rain came sweeping in. Rodrigues and Ghosh had added 25 in just 3.1 overs after India lost debutant Yastika Bhatia for 15, when she miscued a slog off legspinner Georgia Wareham to long-on.The story of the innings, however, was in how frenetic the powerplay turned out to be. Shafali Verma scythed her first ball for six, Smriti Mandhana went after Sophie Molineux’s left-arm spin to wallop two fours and a six in her first over, and Ashleigh Gardner showed her guile and smarts to perfection in removing both batters in the space of four deliveries with her loopy offspin.Mandhana was drawn out by a tossed-up delivery bowled a touch wide. She swung through only to toe-end it to mid-off. Verma, having muscled a slog sweep over deep midwicket, fell trying to replicate the same stroke, handing a catch to the boundary rider. It was a bizarre innings for Verma. Jumping all around the crease, looking to scoop, trying to make room to swing, or wildly heaving into the leg side, she played out a succession of dots in the third over. In trying to premeditate, she kept losing her shape. The last ball of the over, however, was muscled over wide long-on to get her going once again. While the Verma-Mandhana stand didn’t last long, Rodrigues set herself in almost immediately by cutting the ball splendidly to pick up her first boundary off her fifth ball. Harmanpreet Kaur, coming in for her first game of the series after recovering from a thumb injury, also batted with aggression from the get-go, picking up three boundaries off her first four deliveries. She eventually fell to Molineux after playing all around a full ball to be trapped lbw.Every time India appeared to lose a wicket to elicit prospects of a collapse, they appeared to go that much harder at the bowling. The only brief slowdown was when Bhatia struggled to force the pace against the slow bowlers, but once she fell, India picked up the pace again. Could they have hit 180 or 190? We wouldn’t know. What we did see, though, was a refreshing batting approach that could serve them well in the format.

West Ham must sack Lopetegui to appoint manager who’s a "class act"

David Moyes time at West Ham United came to an end last season, having spent two spells at the club between 2017-2024.

Moyes took charge of 261 games for the Hammers, having a 1.19 PPM (points per match) in his first spell, and a 1.53 PPM in his second spell.

West Ham United manager David Moyes

Despite winning the UEFA Conference League in the 2022/23 season, West Ham’s ninth-placed finish last season was enough for the club to try something new, moving onto Julen Lopetegui.

Lopetegui's time so far

West Ham currently sit 15th in the Premier League after their opening eight games, having won twice, drawn twice, and lost four times. Lopetegui’s men have conceded 15 goals already this season, only scoring 11, and averaging 45.1% possession.

Since the Spaniard took over, the Hammers are averaging 15.5 shots against them per 90 (fourth most in the division), which is actually fewer than they averaged last campaign under Moyes, where they averaged 17.2 shots against them per 90 (fourth most that season).

This was always going to be a hard task for Lopetegui, as he is looking to implement an entirely new style of play, more focused around keeping possession, and playing out from the back, rather than absorbing pressure, and trying to hit teams on the break.

The Hammers board must now ruthlessly sack the former Wolves boss and swoop for another Premier League head coach as his replacement.

Thomas Frank an option

According to Dougie Critchley, when speaking on the Sky Sports Premier League YouTube channel, Thomas Frank would be a “really, really smart appointment” for West Ham.

Adam Keys described Frank as a “class act” and this is the sort of appointment that could steady the ship for the Hammers, given his experience in the division.

Frank tends to set up in a 4-3-3, but has plenty of versatility, already using other formations this season, such as 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, and a 5-3-2. This versatility allows Frank to set his side up in the best way for each particular game, tweaking things based on the opposition.

The ability to deploy a five-back could help West Ham initially defensively, looking to tighten things up and stop leaking goals. This would also then allow for their midfield to have a bit more protection, something they have struggled with so far this season, with a lack of mobility hurting them at times.

Jarrod Bowen could get back to his very best too, and begin to replicate the attacking numbers he managed last season, used in a similar role to Bryan Mbuemo, who has already scored six Premier League goals in eight games this season.

Brentford averaged 14.4 shots against them per 90 last season under Frank, which is better than the 15.5 on average so far this season under Lopetegui. This balance of defensive solidity, tactical variance, and platforming your star players in the best way for them to perform, would give the Hammers an uplift going into a busy winter period.

Therefore, West Ham should ruthlessly sack the Spanish head coach and launch an ambitious move for Brentford’s manager to secure an upturn in form.
