WHAT HAPPENED?
Kovacic was the unlikely hero for Pep Guardiola during Manchester City's 3-2 win over Fulham on Saturday as the Croatian midfielder scored twice past Bernd Leno. The eight-time Premier League winners were far from their best on the night, as has been the case for the most part since they lost Rodri to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear last month.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Kovacic slotted into Rodri's position in a single pivot at the Etihad against Fulham, something which Guardiola had not trialled since the Spaniard's injury against Arsenal. The Premier League champions have gone with a double-pivot system since the injury, however, against the Cottagers, Kovacic was given the nod in a single-pivot system, and the former Real Madrid man believes he can replace the Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament for the rest of the season.

WHAT KOVACIC SAID
Speaking to the media, Kovacic said: "I am playing there in the middle at the moment and of course, we need to cover for Rodri, we miss him a lot.
“I think any team would miss him, the player that he is, and we wish him a speedy recovery and hope he comes back as good shape as possible.
"For now we have to adapt and for sure the manager has a lot of options so we can rotate."

WHAT NEXT FOR KOVACIC?
The Croatian will now join his national team for their Nations League clashes against Scotland and Poland before returning to Manchester for City's Premier League match against Wolves on October 20.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman was in attendance and will have been delighted with what she saw on an incredible night for Gareth Taylor's side
Manchester City sent a statement to the rest of Europe as they defeated Barcelona, winners of the last two Champions League titles, 2-0 on Wednesday night. It was an outstanding collective effort from the English side on their first appearance in the competition proper since 2021, but the headlines were grabbed by 20-year-old defender Naomi Layzell, a surprise starter, as she contributed a goal and an assist to a thoroughly impressive win.
Despite hitting the post after just four minutes through Caroline Graham Hansen, Barca were surprisingly sloppy as they started their European title defence, though City do deserve some credit for that because of the intensity of their pressing. Gareth Taylor's side were right in the faces of their opponents and fired a warning shot of their own early on, when Lauren Hemp rattled the upright.
But after Laia Aleixandri had to perform defensive heroics with a block on the line to deny Ewa Pajor, it was an unlikely goal-scorer who broke the deadlock. Barca goalkeeper Cata Coll made a terrific save to deny Jess Park initially, but was all at sea from the resulting corner and City capitalised. Vivianne Miedema headed the ball across the face of goal and there was Layzell to bundle it home for the first of her senior career.
With England boss Sarina Wiegman watching on, Layzell then provided the killer ball after the break which allowed Khadija Shaw to confidently slot home and make it 2-0 with little over 10 minutes to go. It was against the run of play, Barca having upped the intensity in the second half, but that City shot-stopper Ayaka Yamashita rarely made anything more than a comfortable save will disappoint the Catalans as they suffered a surprising, though not undeserved, loss.

Ayaka Yamashita (6/10):
Was only forced into a couple of comfortable saves. Distribution was good.
Naomi Layzell (9/10):
Could've been overawed but stuck to the task of marking Putellas well and was in the right place at the right time for her goal. Inch-perfect assist for the second.
Laia Aleixandri (8/10):
Did well to stay disciplined and composed after an early booking, making two particularly fantastic blocks.
Alex Greenwood (7/10):
Positioned herself well defensively and was accurate in possession.
Kerstin Casparij (7/10):
Had the difficult job of marking Graham Hansen and yet did brilliantly.

Yui Hasegawa (8/10):
Must have covered every blade of grass. Won possession back more than any other player and protected the ball exceptionally.
Jess Park (7/10):
Didn't have a ton of touches but was efficient with the ball when she got it.
Vivianne Miedema (7/10):
Was so often involved in City's brightest moments, though did need Aleixandri to save her blushes at the other end when she inadvertently slipped Pajor in.

Mary Fowler (7/10):
A really bright performance and a hard-working one, too.
Khadija Shaw (8/10):
Didn't have a lot of service but dropped deep to get involved and create for others instead, then put away her big chance.
Lauren Hemp (9/10):
Was an absolute livewire going forward and extremely committed to helping Casparij deal with Graham Hansen on the other side of the ball.

Crawley wins prestigious CWC award to go with PCA Young Player of the Year
ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2020Zak Crawley, who turned his maiden Test hundred into a mammoth 267 during the summer, has been voted the Cricket Writers’ Club NV Play Young Cricketer of the Year. Former England captain Alastair Cook was named County Championship Player of the Year for his performances in the Bob Willis Trophy, while England spinner Sophie Ecclestone claimed the CWC Women’s Cricket Award.Jason Holder and the West Indies men’s team were also recognised with the Peter Smith Award, given for outstanding contribution to the presentation of cricket to the public, after helping England to fulfil their international commitments during the Covid-19 pandemic, and for leading the way in cricket’s Black Lives Matter conversation. The CWC young cricketer award is voted on by members of the club, and is restricted to England-qualified players under the age of 23 at the start of the season. It has been awarded every year since 1950, with many recipients going on to enjoy long careers in international cricket.Crawley, the Kent opener who was also voted the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s Young Player of the Year, scored 417 runs at an average of 69.50 in four Test appearances during England’s bio-secure series against West Indies and Pakistan. He also recorded a maiden T20 hundred, and added another in Kent’s Bob Willis Trophy campaign.”To get the cricket we did and have a decent summer was very special,” Crawley said. “To win this award, voted for by the cricket media is very special, so thanks to everyone who voted for me.”Cook was the leading run-scorer in the Bob Willis Trophy, with his imperious 172 in the final at Lord’s helping Essex to secure the county red-ball title for the third time in four seasons. “It was a great year, actually,” Cook said. “I was very sceptical to start with. I thought a five-match tournament, six with the final, I didn’t think it would work. I was totally and utterly wrong. It was a brilliant tournament.”Every game mattered and because there were no overseas players, because counties had a ‘free shot’ with no relegation, promotion wasn’t spoken about, everyone could win it, clubs backed their own youngsters.”Ecclestone, 21, is currently ranked the ICC’s No. 1 bowler in women’s T20Is. She was commended by Isabelle Westbury, convenor of the Women’s Cricket Award selection panel, for “another outstanding 12 months in international cricket” after helping England to the semi-final of the Women’s T20 World Cup, as well as a 5-0 series sweep against West Indies last month.”I’m really honoured to receive this award, given the girls who’ve won it before and hopefully there’s more to come in the future,” Ecclestone said. The Lord’s Taverners Disability Cricketer of the Year went to Dan Bower, who scored 499 runs at an average of 99.80 in England’s 8-0 whitewash of Australia last October. The discretionary Peter Smith Award, named after the late cricket correspondent, was determined by a panel of media members chaired by journalist Tanya Aldred. The panel’s citation read: “Holder led a trailblazing tour party that flew into the unknown at the height of the Covid-crisis in the UK, from the relative safety of the Caribbean. As the first sports team to enter a bio-bubble, they showed great forbearance, holed up in two hotels for seven weeks, and were instrumental in rescuing the international summer for cricket lovers and the ECB. Holder also conducted himself with grace on and off the field, speaking eloquently on race and racism and the need for education and unity, during a period of turbulence precipitated by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.”Winner of the CWC Derek Hodgson Book Award was Duncan Hamilton, for was also highly commended.CWC Chair Alison Mitchell said: “I’d like to congratulate all of our 2020 winners – in a year in which we wondered whether we would see any summer cricket at all. Huge praise must go to Steve Elworthy, his team at the ECB, and the counties, for staging both domestic and international men’s and women’s matches in safe environments.”Naturally it is disappointing that we can’t honour our winners at the usual CWC Lunch event this year, but we hope we can formally present the trophies at an event in the future.”
The flaws in Dhoni’s team were laid bare as they crumbled in chase of 170
Deivarayan Muthu10-Oct-20204:11
Manjrekar: ‘After Watson and du Plessis fell, chase seemed out of CSK’s reach’
Virat Kohli made a superbly paced 90 not out off 52 balls, and Washington Sundar continued to bowl unhittable lengths in the powerplay, as the Royal Challengers Bangalore brushed aside their old rivals the Chennai Super Kings in Dubai. After choosing to bat on a two-paced pitch, the Royals Challengers quietly saw off the early swing and moved to 103 for 4 in 14 overs. Having set the platform himself, Kohli launched from there, claiming 46 of the 66 runs they amassed in the last six overs, finishing with 169 for 4.Sundar then removed both the in-form Super Kings openers Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson, limiting them to 26 for 2 – their lowest powerplay score this season. By the time MS Dhoni came out to bat at No.5 in the 15th over, the asking rate was hovering around 15. A fit-again Chris Morris and Isuru Udana eventually closed out the game with their assortment of cutters, helping the Royal Challengers climb to fourth on the points table.Virat Kohli held the innings together•BCCI
Chahar, Thakur make inroads After swinging three balls past the outside edge of Aaron Finch in his first over, Deepak Chahar knocked over the opener’s middle stump with an inswinger. Both Devdutt Padikkal, the other opener, and Kohli then simply played themselves in, pushing the Royal Challengers to 65 for 1 in ten overs. However, in the next over, Padikkal (33 off 34 balls) tried to manufacture a boundary off Shardul Thakur, but the cross-seamer messed with his timing, drawing a mis-hit to mid-off. Three balls later, Thakur bowled another cross-seamer, this time having AB de Villiers nicking off for a duck. The Royals Challengers promoted Sundar to No.5 to potentially counter legspinner Karn Sharma and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Sundar sized up a full legbreak from Sharma and slog-swept him over long-on for six, but when he tried to take on Sam Curran, he also nicked off.Kohli goes bang Kohli brought up his half-century, off his 39th ball, when he fiercely pulled Thakur to the fine-leg fence. He then cracked three sixes and a four in the final three overs, taking apart Curran, Thakur, and Bravo. Curran was so rattled that he floated two off-side wides in the 18th over while Thakur bowled a beamer in the 19th. Then, in the final over against Bravo, Kohli shuffled across, picked an attempted Bravo yorker from the tramline and scooped it away through the vacant spaces at fine leg for four despite falling on the floor. Kohli then couldn’t put Bravo’s variations away, but still went 2,2,2,2,1 to give the Royal Challengers a strong finish.Another chase goes wrong for CSK The Super Kings were chasing for the seventh time this season, and it was the same-old story. After miscuing Sundar twice over the infield, du Plessis (8 off 10) dragged the offspinner to Morris, who was manning the longer leg-side boundary. When Sundar strayed down the leg side Watson (14 off 18) slog-swept him off for four, but when the batsman tried to repeat the dose off the next ball, he was bowled by a quick slider.Ambati Rayudu could neither find the boundary or the gaps, struggling to 42 off 40 balls, with just four fours. Super Kings’ new No.4 N Jagadeesan also hit four fours and was the more fluent of the two in a 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket but it took 52 balls. The stand ended when Jagadeesan was run out by a direct hit from Morris for 33 off 28 balls. Dhoni cleared the boundary once before Yuzvendra Chahal dangled a slow legbreak away from his reach and had him slicing a catch to long-off. Game over for the Super Kings.
Liverpool and FSG, after once again falling short of Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title last season, appear eager to sign a highly-rated attacker that could be the difference for the Reds in the next campaign.
Liverpool set to shape squad in Slot's image
After moving quickly to secure Arne Slot as their new manager, Liverpool have wasted no time entering the transfer market, looking to bring fresh faces to Merseyside.

The latest rumours out of Anfield have linked the Reds with a move for a number of young defenders. With Virgil van Dijk's long-term future at the club uncertain and Joel Matip set to leave this summer, Liverpool are looking to secure the future of their back line.
Leny Yoro is one name touted with a move to Merseyside with the LOSC Lille defender linked with a £59million move away from France this summer. Joining Yoro on FSG's wishlist is Italy star Riccardo Calafiori. The Bologna man has caught the attention of numerous clubs during Euro 2024 and could be in line for a £34million move to Liverpool this summer.
Reinforcements further up the pitch have also been linked with Juventus' Adrien Rabiot and German talent Joshua Kimmich both rumoured to be of interest to the Reds. With almost every area of the pitch a priority for Slot and co, it now appears that Liverpool are ready to launch a bid for a highly sought-after attacking player.
Liverpool willing to make Lookman offer
As first reported in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool are one of a number of clubs chasing Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman and the Reds are willing to make a bid close to €60m (£50.7m) for his services.

The outlet cites Chelsea and Manchester United as the other interested parties, meaning that the Reds could have a fight on their hands if they are to get the deal over the line.
Lookman has caught the eyes of numerous clubs this season thanks to his performances for the Bergamo outfit. The Nigerian winger contributed 17 goals and 10 assists over the course of the last campaign, most notably of which was a hat-trick in the Europa League final.

Lookman's performance in the final was something of a shock to many English fans who remember the Nigerian for his lacklustre spells with Everton, Leicester and Fulham. Despite this, the 26-year-old has undergone a rebirth in Italy and now looks like one of the continent's top wingers.
Speaking after Atalanta's 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen to clinch the Europa League trophy, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini explained how Lookman had developed over the last twelve months telling the press: "Lookman is a top player today, but he wasn’t before. He was strong but tended to light up in flashes and at other times would disappear from the game."
Regardless of his history in the Premier League, there is no doubt that this new version of Lookman could be an excellent addition to Slot's side.
Arsenal have managed to get their transfer business fairly spot on over the last few years, whether buying or selling.
Mikel Arteta has welcomed Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus into his team, but perhaps the most high-profile arrival has been Declan Rice.
The £105m man was one of the biggest transfer stories of 2023, and his move to the Gunners has been a success so far.
Declan Rice for Arsenal
So, fans should be excited that one of the latest players touted for a move to N5 this summer could be the perfect man to unlock the former West Ham United captain and get even more out of him.
Arsenal transfer news
Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider's Inside Football podcast, Keith Wyness, the former CEO of Everton, revealed that Arsenal are still interested in the Toffees' star midfielder Amadou Onana and that he's heard "negotiations are ongoing" between the two clubs.
Amadou Onana for Everton
While that sounds like good news for the Gunners, it doesn't mean a deal will come cheap.
A recent report from the Mail Online revealed that while the Merseysiders are willing to sell the Belgian, they will still demand a fee in the region of £50m.
Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.
That said, even for that amount of money, this seems like a transfer well worth pursuing, especially as it could help Arteta get even more out of Rice going forward.
How Onana could unlock Rice
So, there are two ways in which Onana could help Arsenal get more out of Rice. The first is that he could start as the team's left eight, thus allowing the Englishman to become the club's starting six – a role he admitted was his "best position" on the pitch.
However, the other way the Everton ace could get more out of the former Hammer is by starting at the base of midfield himself and allowing the Arsenal man to maraud forward as the left-eight, a role he claimed leaves him "excited."
This may well be the best use of the pair in midfield, as last season, the 25-year-old started 19 of 51 games in central midfield for the North Londoners and racked up an impressive ten goals and assists in the process, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.9 games.
In contrast, the Dakar-born star scored just two goals from 17 starts in a central area, which equates to a goal involvement every 8.5 games, suggesting that he wouldn't be able to match the Englishman's offensive output in that role.
Moreover, when comparing the pair's defensive-midfield relevant underlying numbers, the Merseysider's 6 foot 4 "monster", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, actually comes out on top.

Ultimately, the beauty of signing Onana is that Arteta would have the freedom to play him either as a six or left-eight, but to get the absolute most out of Rice, he should stick with playing him as the former. Therefore, Edu and Co should do all they can to bring the Belgian ace to N5 this summer.

The “versatile” ace could help the Gunners reach the next level.
Bio-bubble life can be difficult, and keeping in mind the impact it can have on players mentally, the length of tours need to be considered going forward. These are the thoughts of Virat Kohli, the India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain.By the time they get on to the field for the IPL 2020 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kohli, like most other players and support staff featuring in the IPL playoffs, would’ve been a part of the IPL bubble for 75 days, with potentially five more days left. Soon after the IPL finishes, players part of India’s touring squad for Australia will fly out directly from Dubai.India’s Test specialist and coaching staff have just finished quarantining themselves in another bio-bubble in Dubai and will link up with the IPL squad members before flying out. With the Australia series due to finish on January 19, it potentially leaves players away from their homes and extended families for over five months. India is also due to immediately host England for five Tests and a limited-overs series, which the BCCI hopes to host in India within another bio-bubble.There is, however, some sort of consolation in that the BCCI has ensured immediate families can travel with the players to Australia, even though there won’t be any concession on the bio-bubble rules.”It’s repetitive, it’s not as tough when the group of guys is amazing, which we have,” Kohli told RCB TV. “Everyone part of that bio-bubble is really nice, the vibe has been so good. That’s precisely why we’ve enjoyed playing together, just enjoyed our time in the bubble as well, but it does get difficult at times because it is repetitive.”While the Royal Challengers management has put together a setup to help players unwind – like having a team room for games, indoor game zones, private pools, entertainment zones for karaoke nights, team dinners at private beaches – Kohli believes such things can help take the pressure off only a little but not entirely. Therefore, he wants conversations on mental wellness and other aspects of bio-bubble life to take place regularly.”These things will have to be considered,” he said. “Like what length of the tournament or series one is going to play and what impact it will have on players mentally to stay in a similar environment for 80 days and not do anything different.”Or have space to just go and see family or small things like that. These things have to be thought about seriously. At the end of the day, you want the players to be in the best state mentally, based on how they’re feeling. Those conversations should take place regularly.”Last week, England allrounder Sam Curran, who was part of the Chennai Super Kings, felt players won’t hesitate from opting out of national selection “in the near future” due to the mental strain of going from one bio-bubble to another.”It is very tricky,” Curran told Sky’s IPL Cricket Show, “but we’re in a very fortunate situation, playing the game we love, going out there and trying to entertain people at home – there’s a lot of people in tough situations. It can be tough – if you’re in all three formats, you’re obviously travelling into different bubbles, not being able to spend time with family, loved ones, things like that.”I know speaking to the other England players that it is tricky. You look at the tours coming up and there’s going to be a big schedule for all-format players. Some guys, I’m sure, will have to pull out at different stages. Some guys react to it differently: there are days when you’re struggling and days when you feel like you’re coping okay.”We’ve just got to keep trying to enjoy it: it can be tough at times, and it’s just about trying to speak to the right people around you, and trying not to get too down on the down days because there can be quite a few.”Curran’s England team-mate Jofra Archer, who has spent time in bio-bubbles since June, more than any other player currently, had admitted that he was counting down days to going home from the UAE, where he was part of the Rajasthan Royals.
Supernovas made 126 on a slow pitch and though their bowlers seemed ahead in the early part of the chase, they came undone in the end
Alagappan Muthu04-Nov-2020All it took was the confidence to go through with the big shot. For the entire evening, the Supernovas bowlers had been teasing the opposition with taunting, loopy spin. On a slow pitch, it was an excellent tactic. But Sushma Verma had both the bravery to step out of her crease and the skill to hit sixes when all the pressure was on her team. Her partnership of 51 off 35 balls for the fifth wicket with Sune Luus was pivotal to Velocity coming from behind and taking down the defending champions. All of this drama, when the target was only 127.Slow pitch blues A late-season Sharjah pitch demanded a lot from every batter that went out there. The fast bowlers just had to maintain a good length and attack the stumps. The spinners had to avoid dropping it short. Even a hitter of the calibre of Chamari Atapattu was pottering around at 20 off 23 balls in the eighth over. The Supernovas were 43 for 2 at the time and the arrival of their captain appeared to have woken them up.It was desperately hard work working the ball around into gaps because of the slowness of the surface, but Harmanpreet Kaur was able to do it beautifully and then began opening up. A six over deep midwicket off Luus in the 14th over signalled that she was ready to go. Atapattu at the other end had already kicked into gear at and 42 off 36 balls with two fours and two sixes.Alam’s day out At 13 overs, Supernovas were 89 for 2 and looking to launch. At 13.1, the game changed.Jahanara Alam suckered Atapattu to long-on with a wide ball well outside of her reach. She then had Kaur caught at fine leg in the 17th over and finished with figures of 2 for 27.Those two wickets were incredibly vital. The Supernovas lost their two biggest hitters with more than three overs of their innings still left to play. As a result, they could make only 10 runs off the last 18 balls. And lost four wickets doing so.An awkward chase Dani Wyatt fell in the first over.Shafali Verma batted like a dream. She hit Ayabonga Khaka for a hat-trick of boundaries that made the pitch seem like a batting paradise, but in trying to go for a fourth big hit, she hit a full toss straight to deep midwicket.Mithali Raj couldn’t hit the ball off the square. She fell for 7 off 19 balls.Veda Krishnamurthy did her best to keep the required rate manageable while her captain struggled but when she fell in the 13th over for 29 off 28, it seemed like Velocity were done. They needed 62 off 42 balls and they only had the wicketkeeper, a bowling allrounder and the tail left. Fortunately for them, that proved to be enough.Verma and Luus to the rescue The required rate had soared to 10 an over by the 15th. And Sushma Verma responded to that by dancing down the track and launching Poonam Yadav for a six over her head.Luus followed suit, her preference, sweeping the legspinner over deep square leg. That over cost Supernovas 14 runs and it ended with one of the best spinners in the world giving up on her single greatest strength – flighting the ball. The equation was 36 off 24 now. And it kept coming down with every straight hit by Verma and every sublime sweep from Luus. Two players with a clear gameplan and a willingness to attack the bowling. That’s all this game needed and that’s what won it in the end for Velocity.
