    WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea have now received Aston Villa's permission to begin contract talks with Duran as they continue their search for a top goalscorer. The Telegraph has reported that the two Premier League sides have loosely agreed upon a £40 million ($50.7m) price tag. Chelsea also reportedly tried to sign the Colombian earlier this year during the winter transfer window but his injury at the time, halted any advances.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The deal would reportedly trigger Aston Villa to target Chelsea's Ian Maatsen and Conor Gallagher. Maatsen spent the second half of the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund and impressed under Edin Terzic, however, Die Schwarzgelben are not willing to pay the Blues' £35million release clause, and as such, Unai Emery's side are now considering a move. The Villains are also targeting Gallagher and they hope that Duran's move may help in aiding the relationship with Chelsea to smoothen the deal for the midfielder.

    DID YOU KNOW?

As per the Telegraph's report, there may be some hurdles that may come up in contract talks between Duran and Chelsea as the Blues want to offer the player a "long, incentivised contract, rather than putting him straight on big wages" as they try to gauge the Colombian's character with the striker believed to be an 'unusual' character.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR THE DEALS?

It is likely that Chelsea may try to close to deal with Duran before the end of this month at the latest, as they would like to prepare the squad for Enzo Marseca's first season. As for Gallagher and Maatsen, it is likely that the deals can only be sorted after the end of their Euros campaign.

Tottenham transfer hijack reaches crucial point after deadline day update

Tottenham Hotspur are seeking to sign another fresh face after already completing deals for both Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, with journalist Nizaar Kinsella sharing more news on an "exciting" potential addition.

Spurs tipped to be busy on deadline day

Before the January window even opened, manager Ange Postecoglou publicly expressed the importance of getting players through the door in quick fashion.

The club granted his wish by getting Dragusin and Werner, with the former bolstering Postecoglou's defensive ranks and providing a solid alternative option to the likes of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The latter, meanwhile, has bagged two assists in two Premier League games since joining from RB Leipzig on loan.

Despite already bolstering their squad sufficiently, with Spurs among the division's biggest spenders this month, selling Harry Kane last summer for pure profit means they have more wiggle room financially where other clubs do not (Luke Edwards).

This has resulted in suggestions Tottenham could make a third January signing after Dragusin and Werner. Indeed, there are still reports surrounding Chelsea star Conor Gallagher as one target, with reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano refusing to rule out a late deadline day bid.

Elsewhere, Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall is central to a tug-of-war between both the north Londoners and Barcelona. Spurs have been continuing their policy of signing some of Europe's rising stars on buy-to-loan-back deals, in a similar fashion to how they first brought first teamers Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr to the club.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou's side are apparently attempting to hijack Barca'a deal for the 17-year-old, who is emerging as one of Scandinavia's most exceptional talents.

Both Spurs and the La Liga giants have apparently made proposals to sign the Djurgårdens IF.winger, and he is said to be deciding whether to make a move to England or the Nou Camp.

Decision pending as Bergvall eyes Tottenham and Barcelona moves

According to Nizaar Kinsella of The Evening Standard, who shared an update on the matter today, Bergvall's decision between Barcelona and Tottenham is "pending" in what he calls an "exciting" potential move for the club.

The teenage sensation was meant to be making his call last night (Kinsella), but it appears the pull of N17 is giving him something to seriously think about.

Bergvall has been lavished with praise for his potential by members of the media like journalist Antonio Mango, who perhaps explained in December exactly why he's being highly coveted by Tottenham.

Josh Hazlewood questions Jason Roy's Ashes opening credentials

Australian quick cites Aaron Finch’s difficulties as an indicator of how challenging it is for limited-overs specialists to successfully open the batting in Tests

Daniel Brettig29-Jul-2019Josh Hazlewood has declared that Aaron Finch’s recent struggles to convert an aggressive ODI game into Test match runs should raise questions about how well Jason Roy might be able to adapt to a similar role change at the top of the order for England during the Ashes series starting this week in Birmingham.Having dominated as an opener in England’s World Cup-winning campaign, Roy was parachuted into Joe Root’s Test squad for the Ashes, and made 72 in the second innings on debut against Ireland at Lord’s. England selector Ed Smith has called Roy a more complete player than ever, but Hazlewood had little hesitation wondering aloud whether Roy, who is a middle-order batsman for Surrey when he turns out for his county side, was capable of doing the job in Tests.”We’ll see how Roy goes in Test cricket. He’s has only played one Test match and it’s a lot different opening the batting in a Test than a one-day game, that’s for sure,” Hazlewood said. “In England, opening is probably the toughest place to bat, which probably made Alastair Cook’s record all the better. To play attacking cricket in those conditions is tough.”Aaron Finch found it tough last summer against a quality India attack on wickets that didn’t do too much, to be honest. I think he found it a big step up, to be honest. He found the ball swung and seamed around and the wickets were a lot different to a one-day wicket. He’d played a lot of his four-day cricket at five or six and I think Roy is the same at Surrey. It’s hard to bat five at a level below and then open in Test cricket. We’ll see.”Finch’s experience, after a promising start against Pakistan in the UAE, was to be worn down by the diligence and skill of Jasprit Bumrah. Hazlewood was conscious too that the Australians had the opportunity to make early inroads at Edgbaston to build mental hurdles for the hosts that only compound over five matches, much as Moeen Ali was cornered by Nathan Lyon across the 2017-18 series down under.”Absolutely, we’ve had some [experience] I guess, with Nathan Lyon with Moeen in Australia,” Hazlewood said. “If you can really build the pressure on one guy and get him early in the first Test especially, you can sort of create that doubt in that mind and get the upper hand and just keep driving that in as the series goes on. This is the only team we play in a five-Test series so it’s a little bit different than others, but definitely that’s key.”Their top order is under a little bit of pressure probably, with just the fact they haven’t played that much Test cricket. The more we can put them under pressure early and get stuck into that middle order when the ball is nice and hard and new, that’s great.”Josh Hazlewood in his delivery stride•Getty ImagesDavid Saker, the former bowling coach of both Australia and England, noted this week that while he loved working with Hazlewood, it was true that the New South Welshman can tend to pitch too short. The Australians have been thinking for some months, dating back to the time before Saker resigned in late January, that a balance between hitting the stumps and not floating up the swinging ball too gently would be critical to an Ashes win.”I’ve spoken a lot to Sakes over the last few years about bowling in England,” Hazlewood said. “I think the main thing is I think English batsmen play swing bowling really well, they’re used to it. They play it all the time. So he really focused on more the seam aspect and bowling a scrambled seam or whatever it is, how you’re going to get the ball to move off the wicket.”The length is key with that. I think I tended to bowl a bit full last time. Seeing it swing you get quite greedy and might go a touch full and get driven. We’ve spoken a lot about it on the Australia A tour, James Pattinson especially. Just hitting that right length. He said the same thing, he thinks seam is the way to go. It’s great if you can do both and I feel pretty comfortable with where I am at now.”As for how Hazlewood sees his own role, he admitted that a series in which he played three or four Tests would be reasonable, in acknowledgement that a deep and adaptable Australian bowling group could be quite effectively rotated over the course of five tightly packed matches. “I think it would be a very good effort to play all five, especially with my last two years, I’ve missed a few Tests with injury,” he said. “I’d be really happy with four, three or four even. It’s such a tight schedule.”Five would be great if we got away with a couple of cheap innings, bowling 30 (overs) for the Test or something like that, it’d be great. We’ll play it by ear and see how we go. I guess, just with how tight the scheduling is, it’s probably the tightest we’ve seen the five-Test series and a couple of tour games thrown in there as well … I think the guys are happy to play it by ear a little bit, obviously depending on how much we bowl per Test.”You can’t look too far ahead I think. You can map certain things out if things happen but you’ve got to play it by ear I think with Test cricket. You might get away with a Test with 30 overs under your belt which is fine. It’s when it goes up to 45 to 50 that you start to reassess things and look at different options. There’s six quicks here, which is great, so more than happy to rotate or conditions based picking those bowlers, we’ll see how we go.”

49ers plan to smash Leeds United’s summer transfer records if promoted

A hugely exciting update has emerged regarding Leeds United's spending this summer, with a record-breaking transfer window potentially taking place.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites sit second in the Championship table heading into the weekend action, and while they lost in heartbreaking fashion at Chelsea in the FA Cup in midweek, Daniel Farke's side still look in a great place to be promoted back to the Premier League.

Should that target be achieved, Leeds will no doubt delve into the transfer market for formidable signings who can keep them in the top flight, adding quality and depth to Farke's squad.

Kalvin Phillips for West Ham

A return to Elland Road for Kalvin Phillips has been mooted recently, with the 28-year-old really struggling to impress at Manchester City, and also experiencing a tough start to life on loan at West Ham since January. A Leeds reunion would likely go down well with supporters, considering how popular he was before he departed in 2022.

Sunderland star Jack Clarke could also be a summer target for the Whites, with journalist Dean Jones saying he is the "profile" of player Farke is looking for ahead of the summer transfer window.

49ers planning record-breaking summer at Leeds

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, 49ers Enterprises are planning on spending big at Leeds this summer, and could be boosted by a transfer budget of over £100m if they seal a return to the Premier League.

Leeds United's home stadium, Elland Road.

"Leeds United can boost their summer budget massively by achieving automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season. The Whites could have a figure of around £75-100million to play with if they do secure a top-two finish in the Championship.

"Players will be due wage increases and new contracts if they do achieve that feat, but Leeds will nonetheless be in a strong position to spend big if they return to the top flight. That budget could be increased even further if those out on loan – the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Jack Harrison, Rasmus Kristensen, etc – are sold permanently."

This really does highlight the importance of Leeds getting back into the Premier League next season, in terms of the level of spending that could take place. Should this update end up coming to fruition, the Whites could set a new record for spending in a summer, pipping the £102.9m net spend that they splashed out on new faces back in 2020, when the likes of Rodrigo, Raphinha and Helder Costa came in.

It is encouraging to see 49ers planning on being ambitious and backing Farke, and the fact that even more money could be available if players such as Brenden Aaronson and Jack Harrison are moved on could make it an even more memorable window.

Leeds could’ve solved Firpo woes with “phenomenal” gem who left in 2017

Leeds United wouldn’t say no to having this Junior Firpo upgrade back at Elland Road.

ByKelan Sarson Feb 29, 2024

Leeds have to seal a return to the Premier League and then stay there, rather than becoming a club who constantly jump between the top flight and the Championship, and big spending on excellent players should only aid that.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has launched the Women’s T20 Super League, a tournament that seeks to provide more game time and competition for South Africa’s best women players. The inaugural edition starts Friday at Irene Country Club, and will have six matches played over the weekend between four teams in a round-robin format. A second leg of the league will follow in Cape Town in December.”We need to address the lack of game time and provide more competitive cricket for the women’s structure in order to produce quality cricketers and to improve the pool of players for national selection,” CSA head of pathways Edward Khoza said.”The Super League is a concept that will be utilised to close the performance gaps of identified players and coaches within the CSA pipeline, introducing a minimum three Super League weekends – strength v strength – per season whereby players are drafted into four teams with the specific focus of preparing players for international competition.”The league is chiefly looking at promoting domestic talent with a pool of 52 players, and with the aim to contribute to the preparation for next year’s T20 World Cup.”This is a great way to shine a light on the growth of women’s cricket which will provide more opportunities for female cricketers around the country who will ultimately be considered for national selection,” Khoza said.Squads

Tottenham teenager compared to Harry Kane as glowing endorsement shared

A Tottenham teenager has drawn comparisons to Harry Kane as journalist Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic shares a glowing endorsement.

Postecoglou sends academy message despite rising Spurs stars

Over the past few years, notable academy products like Oliver Skipp, Dane Scarlett and Troy Parrott broke out of the youth ranks carrying real reputations with them.

"Huge" – Sky pundit thrilled as Tottenham allegedly eye "next level" star

Spurs are apparently very keen on the £60 million man.

Skipp is a regular member of Ange Postecoglou's matchday squads and features often, while Scarlett has been likened to Marcus Rashford by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

Parrott's also excelling on loan at Excelsior in the Netherlands right now, scoring seven goals and assisting three others in 13 league starts, so it will be interesting to see what Postecoglou has planned for the Republic of Ireland international.

Tottenham's manager has already praised the likes of Alfie Dorrington and Jamie Donley this season, with Postecoglou handing the latter three brief Premier League cameos over 2023/2024.

However, the Australian is still adamant that there is plenty of work still to do at academy level.

"We've still got a lot of work to do at academy level," said Postecoglou on Spurs' youth system.

"We've got a great man there in Simon [Davies] who has worked at some of best academies going and he knows what’s needed. We've got some good coaches in there now. This year has been better but in terms of a production line of young players I think we’re still well behind other clubs.

"There was already a process in place before I came in and yeah like I said, some of it is around the methodology we use, but also a little bit of opportunity. I guess if young players don't feel there is an opportunity here maybe we don't get the best ones or maybe we don't provide the opportunities for the best ones, so my role in that is to make sure the good ones we have do get an opportunity.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates.

"And secondly, other young good young players around the country, not just around the world, see this as a club where if you are talented, you will get an opportunity."

Going back to Donley, though, and the 19-year-old is a clear example of Spurs prodigies who seem destined to succeed at this stage. The Englishman's reputation is growing, as reporter Eccleshare explains on an episode of The View from the Lane podcast (via The Boot Room).

Jamie Donley likened to Harry Kane

As per Eccleshare, some at Spurs have already compared Donley to club-record goalscorer Harry Kane.

“Yeah if you speak to anyone who knows the most about this topic they all say that Donley is the best of his age group," said Donley.

"I saw him play at the start of last season and my impression is that it’s not clear what position he will play when he grows up into senior football. He’s played up front a lot but he’s not a pure striker, he’s a nine and a half, some have compared him to Harry Kane, and someone I spoke to the other day compared him to Julian Alvarez at Man City who is a striker but takes up a lot of deeper positions as well."

New Kerala captain Robin Uthappa wants to give players 'more security'

Robin Uthappa has been named captain of Kerala’s limited-overs squads for the upcoming Indian domestic season, and feels he and the team will be “the perfect fit”.Uthappa, who had a shortened season as a professional with Saurashtra last year because of injuries, will play his first season as a professional for Kerala in 2019-20. The 33-year-old batsman last captained in recognised cricket in 2014, when he led a touring India A side in a quadrangular one-day series in Australia. He also captained Karnataka sporadically between 2008 and 2012.”Well, whether in Karnataka or Saurashtra or even at KKR [Kolkata Knight Riders, in the IPL], I have always had a role within the leadership group, as a senior cricketer in the team. So even when I was not the captain, I had a role as a senior player. I’ve always enjoyed it,” Uthappa, currently in Chennai to take part in a pre-season camp for Kerala, told . “And as a senior pro, I have done my bit. So why not? We have a wonderful bunch of boys and … when they asked me, I was happy to take up the offer. All of them, I think of them as younger brothers and I can add value to the team.”This [the Kerala offer] was supposed to come through a couple of years ago, but didn’t happen at the time, and then Saurashtra happened. My two years were up with Saurashtra and Kerala were looking for a professional and it looks like the perfect fit.”Uthappa had led Kerala Cricket Association XI in their last match of the Dr Capt K Thimmappiah Memorial Cricket Tournament in Bengaluru last month in the absence of regular captain Sachin Baby. With the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy starting at the end of September, he has now been given a more stable role, but the association hasn’t made a decision regarding the captaincy of the Ranji Trophy team, which made it to the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively under Baby in the last two years.”Ranji is quite far away, right now the focus is on … it doesn’t matter who leads the side,” Uthappa said. “There is mutual respect within the group. The team’s had its own journey, everyone is happy, and I’m waiting to get in there and be part of it. Who the captain is is inconsequential. It’s a happy unit. Sachin has been a massive help for me. It’s a different team culture too, and he has been a huge help. He is going to continue to be a huge help. It’s quite a good atmosphere.”Uthappa is a two-time Ranji champion with Karnataka and a two-time IPL winner with Knight Riders. There’s that experience, plus that from 46 ODI and 13 T20I appearances for India, including at the World Cup and World T20 in 2007, the last of which India won. And at Kerala, he will have for company 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore, under whom Kerala made the Ranji semi-final for the first time in 2018-19.Whatmore was away, back home in Australia, while the team conducted it’s camp in Chennai, but he is expected to link up with the boys soon.”We have a World Cup-winning coach, he brings great value within the group that I will also try to learn from. We have been in touch on and off,” Uthappa said. “We have a little time to go for the Vijay Hazare, so we’ll work out the permutations and combinations between now and then.”It’s an extremely talented bunch of lads. There’s a lot of hard work. They are very committed. Well, they could do with more of direction and intention as far as winning tournaments are concerned, instead of just doing well and participating. But that will happen as we go along. I think what we will be looking for is a bit more consistency. If we can provide the players with more security about their positions, then performance will be the next step.”Uthappa has played 136 first-class matches, 189 List A matches, and 250 T20s since his professional debut in 2002-03, and has been among the most prolific IPL batsmen since his move to Knight Riders in 2014.

Now Keys has joined the bandwagon as he went as far as claiming that the Football Association should consider sacking the coach with immediate effect and bring in former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp on a short-term basis ahead of their first knockout tie.

WHAT RICHARD KEYS SAID

Speaking on , Keys said: "I’m so depressed, I thought that was so miserable once again tonight. I’m at a point where if I were able to make that decision, yes, I probably would because we are going nowhere double quick. We’re here to win it, that, what I’ve seen tonight, that’s not winning the next game, let alone the tournament.

"Harry Redknapp’s sat in Dubai tonight, give him a call. [Jurgen] Klopp won’t do it but Harry, you think he wouldn’t be on a plane tomorrow morning?"
