Mitchell exacts further punishment before Yorkshire secure status

Jack Brooks continued his grand farewell to Yorkshire with five wickets, but thanks to Daryl Mitchell the day was largely spent before they confirmed their place in Division One

ScorecardYorkshire made sure of their Division One status in the Specsavers County Championship for the 2019 season despite being on the receiving end of another century from Worcestershire opener Daryl Mitchell at Blackfinch New Road. The Tykes needed two more points to stay up and that milestone was achieved when Ed Barnard was leg before to Jack Brooks in the paceman’s final game before leaving Headingley to join Somerset. Brooks continued a splendid end to the season in which he has done much to ensure Yorkshire’s safety.Yorkshire were made to wait until the 84th over after opting to bowl via an uncontested toss due mainly to the efforts of Mitchell who completed his fourth Championship century of the campaign. He followed up his 178 in last month’s innings victory at Scarborough with another invaluable knock for his side before being eighth out, Worcestershire eventually closing on 319 for 8.It enabled Brooks to complete his third five-wicket haul in five games since announcing he has signed a three year contract at Taunton until the end of the 2021 season.A win over Lancashire sandwiched in between draws with Nottinghamshire and Hampshire from the previous three games had eased Yorkshire’s fears of the drop before the task was completed today.Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s head coach, said of Brooks five wicket haul: “It is testament to the man, He is not going to be with us next year but it would have been easy for him to fade out until the end of the season. He hasn’t done that, he’s put a real shift in for us and is one of the key reasons why we are still in Division One.”Worcestershire were playing for only pride after defeat against Essex at Chelmsford had confirmed their relegation after one season in the top flight. But their batsmen dug in and made Yorkshire work for the six wickets needed to stave off the threat of going down. No-one was more obdurate than Mitchell with his 34th first class century for the County.Tim Bresnan made the only breakthrough of the morning session when Tom Fell (19) was squared up by the former England seamer and provided Jack Leaning with a straightforward catch at third slip.Moeen Ali was greeted with warm applause in his first appearance for Worcestershire since leading them to their first Vitality Blast trophy success nine days ago.He ensured left arm spinner and Yorkshire debutant left-arm spinner James Logan had a chastening introduction into the attack with a six over long on and then a slog sweep from Moeen which brought the same result.Moeen, who had scored a double century at Scarborough, again threatened a major contribution and completed a 69-ball half century.Mitchell had an escape on 43 when he was dropped by keeper Jonathan Tattersall off a Brooks delivery. But Tom Kohler-Cadmore made no mistake when Moeen (60) went for a pull in the first over back into the attack from Yorkshire skipper Steven Patterson and only managed to top edge through to his former team-mate.Joe Clarke, in his final match for Worcestershire before joining Nottinghamshire on a four-year contract, was given a searching examination. The England Lions batsman made just eight from 46 balls before he aimed a drive at Brooks and was bowled. That secured the first point for the visitors and then Alex Milton tentatively pushed forward to Ben Coad and fell to a sharp low catch by Kohler-Cadmore. A fourth wicket of the afternoon session was accrued when Ben Cox was was leg before to Books.Ed Barnard (34) kept Mitchell company in a stand of 88 in 24 overs before his dismissal to Brooks eased any Yorkshire fears. Brooks made it two wickets in two balls as Wayne Parnell was pouched at second slip and then Mitchell’s resistance ended after making 127 when he holed out to deep mid wicket off the same bowler. His 252 ball knock contained 17 fours.

De Villiers, Rabada, du Plessis among marquee players for Mzansi Super League

Chris Gayle, Eoin Morgan, Rashid Khan, Jason Roy are part of the international draft that will take place on October 17

Liam Brickhill15-Oct-2018Cricket South Africa has unveiled the teams and marquee South Africa players for the upcoming Mzansi Super League, South Africa’s new T20 league. The participation of AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis has been confirmed, and CSA has also announced the headlining T20 players for the player draft on Wednesday. Each of the marquee South Africa signings will represent a different city-based franchise: de Villiers will play for the Tshwane Spartans, Amla for the Durban Heat, Rabada for the Jozi Stars, Tahir for the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, Duminy for the Cape Town Blitz and du Plessis for Paarl Rocks.”It was a thorough and well-audited process that led to the six winning bids from our members as well as the collective contribution from all stakeholders involved that led to the final names and logos which we also had to make sure met our objectives for this event,” CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe said.”What was clear throughout this definitive process was that these are completely new entities and names that will operate separately from the current franchise teams. We welcome the six new additions to the South African and international cricket family.”Durban Heat will have the first pick in the player draft on October 17, and they will have the choice of some of T20 franchise cricket’s most recognisable names. Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Eoin Morgan, Rashid Khan, Jason Roy and Dawid Malan were all announced as part of the international draft.”We have received applications from over 200 top international players who expressed interest in playing in this inaugural tournament and will have their names in the hat ahead of the Player Draft process on Wednesday,” Moroe said. “There were expected challenges in the process, of course, with some players available for a particular period because of other cricket commitment clashes elsewhere, including our Proteas, who also have to fulfil our tour to Australia for a One-Day International series.”The stadiums that will host each of the teams were announced last week, and the sides will play a total of 32 games, home and away, over a period of one month from November 16. The CEOs of the organisations running the grounds – Newlands, Wanderers, Kingsmead, St George’s Park, Boland Park and SuperSport Park – will be de facto managers of the teams, assigning their own coaching staff. The MSL is due to start the day before South Africa’s tour to Australia concludes with a one-off T20I at the Carrara Oval, but CSA confirmed the involvement of South Africa’s leading cricketers.

Reece James is going nowhere! Chelsea not prepared to sell right-back but Conor Gallagher & Trevoh Chalobah could be offloaded amid pressure to meet financial restrictions

Chelsea reportedly have no plans to sell Reece James but Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah could be sold to stave off financial breaches.

  • Chelsea under financial fair play pressure
  • Gallagher and Chalobah could be sold
  • Blues have no plans to let James go
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , the Blues are not prepared to let the right-back leave this summer despite concerns over complying with profit and sustainability rules. However, fellow homegrown talent Gallagher and Chalobah could depart, with academy products' transfer fees going down as pure profit.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea are increasingly likely to have to sell players as they currently sit 12th in the Premier League and are unlikely to qualify for Europe – which would provide vital revenue – at this rate. The west London outfit have spent more than £1 billion ($1.2bn) on new players since Todd Boehly took over in May 2022 so the threat of staying within the financial rules will loom large if they continue to struggle to pick up results.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The report adds that Chelsea have made £400 million in player sales since Boehly's takeover and more transfer exits are likely to be needed to help the Stamford Bridge team balance the books. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with James but the Blues don't want to let the 24-year-old go, particularly as his contract expires in 2028.

    WHAT NEXT?

At the end of March, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted he doesn't know when the England international will be back from a hamstring injury but is hopeful the defender will play again before the end of the season.

Everton agree new long-term contract with "composed" academy star

After a difficult start to the season, Everton have finally found their feet under Sean Dyche. The Toffees looked on course for another campaign of relegation fears but have since eased those with victories over Bournemouth and West Ham United. Amid Everton's financial fair play investigation, too, they could do with all the points they can get, as a potential 12-point deduction looms.

Those at Goodison Park will hope to see the investigation end with a far less severe punishment, but will know that the only way to avoid complete damage is to get results on the pitch. What will certainly help Dyche plan for the future is the recent news of one particular young player's contract extension.

Everton contract update

On paper, Everton's transfer business in the summer window should be enough to keep them afloat in the Premier League this season. The likes of Jack Harrison are more than capable of performing at Goodison Park alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has finally been back to his goalscoring best as of late. Whilst the Toffees return to form on the pitch, Dyche will be keen to see things return to their best away from Goodison Park, and away from the reported FFP investigation.

With that said, Everton have agreed a new deal with Francis Okoronkwo. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, the 19 year-old has put pen to paper on a long-term contract following a breakthrough in talks. The forward can now look ahead towards gaining a place in Dyche's first-team, having impressed for Everton's youth sides since making the move from Sunderland for £1m in 2021.

Even as Calvert-Lewin gets closer to his best, Everton's need for goals has not gone away, handing Okoronwko the perfect chance to make an impact in Merseyside for the first time since joining the club.

Okoronkwo is a "composed" young striker

After being handed opportunities in the EFL Trophy this season, Okoronkwo may well be hoping to receive his Premier League debut at some stage in the current campaign. Ahead of the 19-year-old in the pecking order is currently Calvert-Lewin, Beto and Youssef Chermiti, however, which gives the youngster quite the mountain to climb when it comes to winning the faith of Dyche.

For the U21s this season, meanwhile, Okoronkwo's stats haven't stood out enough to warrant an opportunity in England's top flight just yet. In seven Premier League 2 games, the striker has scored two goals and assisted one other in what has been a frustrating start to the season. That's not to say that he doesn't have potential, though, with The Athletic's Patrick Boyland certainly left impressed by his performances in the past, posting on X: "Everton U18s lead at Old Trafford! Francis Okoronkwo again! Really composed finish."

With that said, Dyche could yet have a plan for the forward and the fact that Okoronkwo has reportedly been handed a new deal is nothing but a good sign. From here, if he pushes on, we could be seeing a lot more of the teenager.

'I need a rest!' – Rodri sends message to Pep Guardiola after rusty performance against Real Madrid as Man City star clings on to incredible unbeaten run

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has revealed he needs some time to rest after an uncharacteristically shoddy display against Real Madrid.

  • Rodri says he needs a rest
  • Midfielder looked rusty vs Real Madrid
  • Has missed only four games this season
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Rodri was one of City's weakest performers in the heart-stopping 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. The Spaniard was unable to bring his usual sense of control in midfield amid a chaotic and enthralling match and was showing signs of tiredness amid a relentless schedule of matches. And he admitted that he might benefit from sitting the odd game out.

  • WHAT RODRI SAID

"I do need a rest, let's see how we deal with the situation," Rodri told reporters after the epic quarter-final first leg. "Sometimes I need to adjust but it is what it is."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodri has missed just four matches for City this season and they have lost all of them. His red card against Nottingham Forest in September saw him banned for the Carabao Cup tie at Newcastle and the league games at Wolves and Arsenal. He earned another suspension in December for the visit to Aston Villa, which was City's last defeat. Rodri won City the Champions League final last season against Inter Milan and has been just as impressive this season, dominating games while scoring eight goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions.

Aston Villa keeping close tabs on 6 ft 2 left-footed “monster” for Emery

Aston Villa are closely monitoring a vastly decorated player ahead of January, though a fresh report has revealed that there are other clubs who are also looking to bring him to the Premier League.

Aston Villa transfer news

Football Insider have reported that NSWE, Monchi and Unai Emery are open to offers for Leander Dendoncker at the start of next year, and are looking to replace him with an upgrade in the centre of the park. Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi has emerged as a potential replacement with his deal being set to expire at the end of the season (Leicester contracts), but should the manager fail to secure his services, he’s set his sights on an alternative option overseas.

Juventus’ central midfielder Adrien Rabiot first put pen to paper at the Allianz Stadium from Paris Saint-Germain back in 2019, and he’s since gone on to make a total of 227 appearances for Massimiliano Allegri’s side to date (Transfermarkt – Rabiot statistics).

The France international has emerged as his team’s overall best-performing player so far this season with a match rating of 7.43 (WhoScored – Juventus statistics), and the 28-year-old’s form has caught the eye of Villa chiefs, who are aware that his terms also run out upon the conclusion of the current campaign (Juventus contracts).

Aston Villa keeping tabs on Adrien Rabiot

According to 90min, Aston Villa are casting an eye over Adrien Rabiot, but they are set to face stiff competition from three other admirers.

"Juventus are confident that they will agree a new long-term contract with midfielder Adrien Rabiot, sources have confirmed to 90min. Man Utd still retain an interest in the player, thanks in part to Erik ten Hag being a noted fan of Rabiot's skillset.

"Along with Man Utd, Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Aston Villa and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on Rabiot's situation at Juventus."

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Adrien Rabiot's style of play

A box to box central midfielder, Rabiot is capable of having a positive impact at both ends of the pitch, with the defensive aspect being what he’s shown so far this season having won 15 out of his 27 tackles, which is the highest success rate throughout his squad (FBRef – Juventus statistics).

Standing at 6 foot 2, the left-footed ace also loves to get involved with the action in the final third having posted 74 contributions (43 goals and 31 assists) since the start of his career, with his all-round game having seen him dubbed a “monster” by reliable journalist Robin Bairner.

Allegri’s £150k-per-week earner (Juventus salaries), certainly knows exactly what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level having secured 23 pieces of silverware for both club and country since bursting onto the professional scene, so he would be able to upgrade the winning mentality of the current squad at Aston Villa, who are certainly a young group on the up.

Debutant Ajaz Patel scripts stunning four-run win for New Zealand

The left-arm spinner took five wickets as Pakistan collapsed spectacularly around Azhar Ali in a chase of 176

The Report by Danyal Rasool19-Nov-2018
1:22

Ajaz Patel: teenage left-arm seamer to Test-grade left-arm spinner

In the pantheon of infamous Pakistan implosions, this must rank right around the top. Pakistan were cantering to a victory around lunchtime, courtesy Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali, and the wicket of Shafiq off the last ball before lunch seemed no more than an inconsequential irritant. But New Zealand, blindly, illogically, unreasonably, refused to write off this match as a lost cause, compelling Pakistan to believe the game was still on, the pressure all theirs to bear. And somewhere along the line in the middle session, Pakistan were convinced. New Zealand had won that game of poker, and, in the process, set the wheels in motion for a four-run victory, their narrowest Test win in history, and surely one of their most gratifying ones.

After lunch, Babar Azam lost his head and ran for a single his partner was least interested in, and just like that the panic set in. Sarfraz Ahmed, woefully short of confidence, edged a sweep – a shot that once was a strength but now appears to be a crutch. The tail was in, and the shots they played soon turned the panic into complete hysteria. Even as Pakistan lost their heads, New Zealand kept theirs. Azhar Ali was running out of partners without quite having the belief to take the game into his own hands, and he tried to inch Pakistan to victory with No. 11 Mohammad Abbas in tow. But, having blown their chance to waltz through the door, Pakistan soon found the back door slammed shut too by a New Zealand side playing their first Test cricket in over seven months.New Zealand’s indomitable spirit played a massive part in how they sneaked home in one of the most unlikely comebacks of all time, but the inquisition from Pakistan is destined to be punitive. There was so much to take issue with in the approach to the target, a small target by lunch. These were professional cricketers and with the finishing line almost reaching out in embrace, they forgot how to run. Strategies were thrown out of the window, composure tossed aside in the frenzy. Babar and Sarfraz may be the most disappointed in the manner of their dismissals, but the lower order could have few excuses too.Bilal Asif tried to swing Patel into Dubai with an ugly hoick, with Azhar Ali at the other end, handing New Zealand the seventh wicket as the possibility of defeat became a probability for the first time. Azhar, too, was guilty of sensing the moment far too late, only properly farming the strike when he was with Abbas.Hasan Ali may receive the brunt of the blame; Pakistan cricket does like a scapegoat or two. He was the one who decided to go into T20 mode, hoicking Patel to deep midwicket with his side needing 12 runs. Eighteen months ago, Pakistan made Shannon Gabriel the butt of many jokes when the No. 11 tried to sweep Yasir Shah when a defensive block would have given senior partner Roston Chase the strike for the final over and secured a draw. Hasan’s smear was in no way less hare-brained, and in the end equally as costly to Pakistan, condemning them to their narrowest Test defeat.Neil Wagner roars after taking a wicket•AFPFor New Zealand, Patel was the hero and such team spirit exists in their dressing room that it barely registered he had completed a five-wicket haul on debut, when he trapped Azhar Ali in front for the final wicket. It was a compliment to the debutant that he was the man Williamson trusted to spin the side to victory even when Ish Sodhi was in the side, and Patel repaid that in bucketloads. Flighting the ball, controlling the spin, drifting it in, rushing it through, he could do it all. He had Pakistan’s batsmen on a piece of string by the end, and cut the cord just in time to prevent them scrambling their way to safety.Things had looked so different at lunch. Azhar and Shafiq had belatedly appeared to step into the boots of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, an 82-run partnership putting Pakistan within touching distance of a 1-0 lead in this series. Coming together with Pakistan at 48 for 3, they had sucked the life out of New Zealand’s hopes.Patel had triggered Pakistan’s slide with a lovely offbreak that came back in and hit the pads quicker than Imam-ul-Haq could cope with, before Sodhi made his impact on the game. A flighted delivery beat Mohammad Hafeez in the air, leaving him spooning a catch to short cover, while Haris Sohail – much as he had first innings, scooped drove a low full toss in the air. Sodhi completed a brilliant, low catch, and the famed Pakistan implosion never far away from the surface came bubbling to the fore once more. But then, Azhar and Shafiq joined hands. Not the Azhar of late, the uncertain, hard hands imposter that has dented his reputation in the past year, but the real thing. He was never rash, but insisted on keeping the runs flowing, eager to play the supporting role to Shafiq who looked so free from pressure you wondered if he really understood the importance of the situation. Sodhi, who had been looking to rip through the Pakistan line-up as spinners do on surfaces like these, suddenly lost his rhythm and couldn’t pitch two consecutive deliveries in the same postcode.Pakistan have had trouble chasing down low totals in the fourth innings recently. Last year in Barbados, they were shot out for 81 in a chase of 187, while at this very ground 13 months ago, Sri Lanka had bowled them out for 114 to deny them a seemingly certain win. They might have been looking to consign those results to musty corners of hidden history today. But, against a side that would not accept they would lose, Pakistan suddenly became a side that refused to believe they were winning.

Dyche must unleash Everton’s £80k-p/w "machine" to ease Onana blow

When Everton paused operations to allow the November international break to take shape, Sean Dyche will have been delighted with a rich purple patch that had lifted his side into 14th place in the Premier League, with three victories from five matches.

Calamity struck, and one week ago Everton were hit with a ten-point deduction – effective immediately – for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Dyche said that he was "shocked" by the decision but appeared stoical in his demeanour; from a footballing perspective, the Toffees have hit form and there is no reason why this cannot continue.

With Manchester United making the trip to Goodison Park, the hosts will be determined to respond in the most emphatic fashion with a victory, with three points possibly lifting the club right back out of the danger zone.

Amadou Onana's style of play

Unfortunately, it looks unlikely that Amadou Onana will have recovered from an injury in time to earn a start from the outset against Erik ten Hag's men, with Dyche saying: "Ama's calf, I don't think will be right. It's still sore."

It's a big setback, there's no doubt about that, with the Belgian midfielder described as a "one-man army" by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his rock-solid performances in the engine room.

Onana has been excellent across his 11 starts in the Premier League this term, completing 85% of his passes, averaging 2.5 tackles and 6.5 ball recoveries per game and winning a whopping 65% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

The £100k-per-week machine has actually been on Man United's radar this year, and it's a bitter blow for Dyche's team that he will not be able to strut his stuff against his suitors.

Harrison dropped in Everton's predicted lineup vs Man Utd

Everton boss Sean Dyche could look to add a little more steal to his midfield this weekend.

ByAdam Scully Nov 24, 2023

That being said, Everton do hold a star capable of thriving in his place, with Idrissa Gueye likely to get the nod…

Idrissa Gueye's season in numbers

Aged 34, Gueye might be getting on a bit now but he's still proving that he can do a job on the biggest stage, having earned nine starting appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring the winning goal off the bench at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace last time out.

As per FBref, the Senegalese star ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles and the top 21% for interceptions per 90, punctuating the importance of placing him in the centre against Erik ten Hag's side.

idrissa-gueye-everton-dyche-arsenal-arteta-ditch-prmeier-league-onana-garner

Once dubbed a "machine" who "never stops running" by his former Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel, Gueye has chalked up 176 appearances in the Premier League and has won a wealth of trophies in France and clinched the African Cup of Nations with his country in 2022.

He's a veteran, through and through, and while Onana's absence will be felt, Gueye could ensure that such a loss is not detrimental, especially considering that he has completed 87% of his passes this year, has won 59% of his ground duels and averages 2.3 tackles and 6.7 recoveries each fixture.

If the £80k-per-week Gueye's street smarts and composure are at their best, then Everton could find that the perfect start to life after the point deduction begins with victory over United.
