Man United: Fabrizio Romano suggests "fantastic" Jadon Sancho replacement

Jadon Sancho's Manchester United career could come to an end in the near future, and journalist Fabrizio Romano has now suggested a potential replacement at Old Trafford.

Will Jadon Sancho leave Man United?

Sancho made the move to Old Trafford in 2021, with big things expected of him after he completed a big-money transfer from Borussia Dortmund. He was arguably seen as one of the most promising young players in Europe at the time, but he has been a huge disappointment since returning to England.

In total, the 23-year-old has scored just 12 goals and registered six assists in 82 appearances for United, with his performances too often feeling forgettable rather than influential. Not only that, but he now finds himself completely frozen out of the squad by Erik ten Hag, following disciplinary issues in recent weeks, and there is currently only one direction that his Red Devils career is heading in.

Things can change in football, of course, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Sancho leave United in the January transfer window, should the problems with the manager not be resolved. If that happens, a new attacker would need to come in to aid squad depth, and one potential addition has been name-checked.

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

Who could replace Sancho at Old Trafford?

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that Wolves star Pedro Neto would be a perfect replacement for Sancho at United, should he move on, even though there isn't concrete interest in him at the moment:

"Just one final point on Man United and Jadon Sancho – at the moment there is no significant update to report, and I’m not aware of any decision on a potential new winger signing in January.

"There are many good opportunities around such as Pedro Neto who I’ve already mentioned and who is a fantastic player, but it’s absolutely not sure or guaranteed that Man United will spend big money in January."

Neto could be a wonderful signing for United if they strike a deal for him in January, or next summer for that matter, with the Portuguese speedster clearly a fabulous young player with so much long-term potential.

The 23-year-old has made a superb start to this season for Wolves, already getting four assists in seven Premier League outings, as well as playing a key role in Ruben Dias' own goal for Manchester City on Saturday, as Wanderers ran out surprise 2-1 winners over the champions at Molineux.

Admittedly, Neto has had some serious injury problems in the past, which could make signing him a gamble for United, who already have lots of players unavailable, but he is fit and firing at the moment, and he looks unplayable at times.

Capable of playing on either flank, the Wolves winger is fast, direct and possesses end product, being hailed as a "superstar" by Jamie Carragher in the past, and at just 23 years of age, there is still so much more to come from him.

Put bluntly, he simply looks like a better player than Sancho at this point – they are the same age – and could ultimately be an upgrade on him if he leaves Old Trafford sooner rather than later.

West Ham could make January move for "absolute talent" from huge club

West Ham United could make a January move for a talented young striker, but they will have to do battle for his signature with a rival Premier League club, according to a report.

What's the latest West Ham transfer news?

There is likely to be some concern over the futures of two first-team players heading into the January transfer window, with journalist Ben Jacobs hinting Jarrod Bowen could seek a move to a bigger club to boost his chances of playing for England.

Not only is Bowen's future in doubt, but there could be renewed interest in Lucas Paqueta this winter, with it being reported that Newcastle United are now keen on the attacking midfielder, following serious interest from Manchester City in the summer.

David Moyes was able to strengthen his squad considerably in the previous transfer window, particularly in central midfield, but the manager was unable to get a deal for a striker over the line, despite chasing Paris Saint-Germain's Hugo Ekitike.

PSG wanted Ekitike to move to Eintracht Frankfurt, as a makeweight in a deal for Randal Kolo Muani, but he had no interest in moving to the Bundesliga club, and ultimately ended up remaining at the Parc des Princes.

However, Football Insider have now confirmed the Irons could reignite their interest in the PSG striker in the January transfer window, as he is likely to be "one of the best" options available on the market mid-season.

There may be competition for the Frenchman's signature though, with Crystal Palace also being named as potential suitors, having targeted him themselves during the summer.

The Hammers were involved in talks over a potential deal for the 21-year-old right up until the last day of the transfer window, and he made it clear he wanted to move to the Premier League, rather than making the switch to the Bundesliga and joining Frankfurt.

As such, there is seemingly a good chance the youngster will be interested in a move to the London Stadium this winter, at which point he will be ready to quit PSG, having mutually agreed an exit is the best possible route forward.

Will West Ham sign a striker?

Gianluca Scamacca was sold to Atalanta in the summer, and West Ham did not bring in a replacement for the Italian, leaving Moyes with Michail Antonio as his main choice to lead the line.

Antonio has started the season fairly well, scoring two goals in five Premier League games, and he has been a fantastic servant to the club over the years, but he is 33-years-old and it is about time the Hammers brought in a younger option.

hugo-ekitike-palace-transfer-news-premier-league

Lauded as an "absolute talent" by scout and football writer Antonio Mango, Ekitike could be the perfect long-term replacement for the Jamaican, having impressed in France, registering ten goals and four assists in 24 Ligue 1 games for Reims in the 2021-22 campaign.

Although the starlet has been unable to kick on since moving to PSG, it is obviously very tricky to dislodge Kylian Mbappe in the starting XI, and a move to the London Stadium could give him the perfect opportunity to reignite his career.

Derby County injury news: "Aggressive" star set for scan in worrying update

Derby County are set to discover the extent of an injury to one of their first-team players this week, according to reports.

What's the latest injury news at Derby?

Paul Warne currently has Conor Hourihane, Tyreece John-Jules, Joe Ward, Liam Thompson and Jake Rooney out of action on the sidelines, but whilst the boss is missing five of his senior stars, he has recently been handed a boost over another ace set to return.

Max Bird has been absent from the last five games in League One with an ankle injury, but reports have claimed that he is expected to return to training on Monday as he prepares to stage his comeback, but unfortunately, someone else is ready to take his place in the treatment room.

Since joining the club on a season-long loan from Sunderland over the summer, Elliot Embleton has so far made two appearances for the Rams, though it seems like he won’t be making his third anytime soon having sustained a concerning injury at Moor Farm.

On Friday, the attacking midfielder pulled his quad in training which meant he was ruled out of the 2-0 third-tier victory over Carlisle United on Saturday afternoon, and the manager has now delivered an update on the fitness of the 24-year-old.

How long is Elliot Embleton out for?

Speaking to the media over the weekend, Warne confirmed that Embleton will travel for a scan to find out how serious his injury is. As quoted by the Derby Telegraph, he said:

"It is disappointing. We've built Elliot up really slowly, he's done his rehab and we've built his minutes up. He played on Tuesday night, had a recovery day Wednesday, had a light session Thursday, and a light session Friday. He took a set-piece, the fourth corner he had taken, and felt something in his quad so it's hugely disappointing.

"In my career, I've never seen anybody pull anything taking a corner and it was right at the end of the session. You feel for Elliot first and foremost. He's worked really hard to get himself into a position to play and then that happens. He was heartbroken. He will have a scan on Monday and see where we go from there."

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

How good is Elliot Embleton?

Whilst Embleton has only made two outings for Derby, Warne will know that he is an “aggressive” player, as described by journalist Josh Bunting, therefore, it will be a huge blow for the manager to not have him available for however long he is set to be on the sidelines for.

The Durham-born talent, who earns £5.3k-per-week, has posted 46 contributions (24 goals and 22 assists) in 194 appearances since the start of his career, whilst ranking in the 94th percentile for shots and number of attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area.

Alongside his ability to pose a threat in the final third, Embleton is also a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions since first bursting onto the scene, including everywhere across the midfield and even as a second striker and at centre-forward, so the boss will be hoping that he can return to action as soon as possible.

Me adaptei e me entrosei rápido.

Acho essencial estar sempre aprendendo. O professor Pintado me ajuda bastante nisso. E eu acredito que vou conseguir ajudar ainda mais no ataque – afirmou.

Nick Gubbins hundred highlights batting depth against misfiring India A

Liam Dawson also impressed with four wickets in front of England head coach Trevor Bayliss while India’s spinners had a poor day

David Hopps at Derby22-Jun-2018
ScorecardTrevor Bayliss, England’s coach, is taking time out from the T20 series against India and Australia to run the rule over England Lions and if the results stay like this in their triangular series against the A teams of India and West Indies he could get to like it. Nick Gubbins was the first member of England’s shadow squad to make a favourable impression with an unbeaten hundred as India A, who were expected to be daunting opponents, were despatched by seven wickets with 8.1 overs to spare in Derby. This was Derby at its most inviting. Once renowned as the coldest, most windswept ground in England, it has improved beyond measure and a gorgeous summer’s day and a slow, slightly abrasive pitch seemed designed for India A. But an exciting batting line-up malfunctioned and India A lacked the spin-bowling threat to defend their modest total of 232. Gubbins was at his smoothest in making 128 not out off 132 balls”I think the wicket got better throughout the day as the sun baked it,” Gubbis conceded. “It looked a bit sticky early on, maybe because we were bowling well. A good toss to lose.”Gubbins has been on the fringes of the England Test side for a while, only for Keaton Jennings to win the right to partner Alastair Cook at the top of the order after the selectors dispensed with Mark Stoneman: a partnership that looks certain to begin the Test series against India later this summer. Bayliss rarely bursts into raptures, but he will have been quietly impressed with what he saw.Gubbins’ season has been disrupted by injury. He made hundreds in the first two North v South challenge pre-season challenge matches in Barbados, but tore a hamstring while fielding in the final match and has managed only two Championship matches for Middlesex. He did return in the Royal London Cup, leaving him well attuned to the 50-over game.Only in the 90s, during an eventful over from the offspinner Krishnappa Gowtham, did he look vulnerable. He should have been stumped by Rishabh Pant on 91 when he came down the pitch, struck a boundary through the hands of mid-off as Gowtham flung his arms aloft in frustration, and finished the over by bringing up his fifth List A century with a dance-down-the-wicket six over long off.Sam Hain also made a composed half-century in a second-wicket stand of 134 in 24 overs as no India A bowler managed to exert much pressure and the result was signalled long before the end. A few disconsolate India ex pats chanted their loyalty to Ravi Jadeja as defeat loomed. India can be expected to put up much stiffer opposition in a triangular where sides play each other twice before a final at Kia Oval a week on Monday. Two India U-19 starlets departed in the first hour: Prithvi Shaw fell to a catch at the wicket off Tom Helm, who had earlier struck him on the forearm, causing a delay for treatment, and Shubman Gill’s impressive 37 from 40 balls came to grief perhaps because of slight over-confidence when he was bowled, playing inside a ball from left-arm spinner Liam Dawson which had no discernible turn.In between there was also an excellent catch by Ben Foakes, way to his right, which provided respite for Reece Topley after an uncertain start.Dawson, now 28, and with ten internationals behind him across three formats, was one of three players in this Lions side qualifying for the description of wily old pro, a designation that could also apply to the captain, Steven Mullaney, who is having his first taste of senior representative cricket at 31, and Chris Jordan, who managed only one match for Sunrisers in this season’s IPL.Dawson eased the chase by taking 4 for 30, a miserly spell despite only a semblance of turn, and one which turned out to be the best analysis by a Lions spinner in England. Dawson bowled Gill for 37 as he played inside a straight one and had Shreyas Iyer, India’s captain, stumped for 42 – a wild swing across the line caused by his failure to reach the pitch of the ball. There was a first-ball duck for Vijay Shankar as he pushed forward, Gowtham also falling in similar fashion.Pant’s 64 from 55 balls was the third India A knock to threaten destruction. He struck Dawson over the low-slung, brick-built bar, but he fell to the offspin of Liam Livingstone when he swept to deep backward square. Seven down for 180, with 18 overs left, India A had been architects of their own downfall. With the same surface destined to be used in England’s match against West Indies on Saturday, England could give an outing to Lancashire’s legspinner Matt Parkinson with India also likely to re-examine their spin options.

Chelsea: Blues signed a star for £0, now he’s worth £50m

Chelsea's recent form has been underwhelming to say the least. In a week that saw a goalless draw with Bournemouth before a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, fans have been left bemused and reeling. It's especially emphatic, given the billion-pound injection from owner Todd Boehly, but also the raw mediocrity on display under such a highly respected manager in Mauricio Pochettino.

With his side sitting in 14th and three games without a goal, Pochettino was led to provide some semi-scathing analysis of his young group. He mentioned they needed to "grow up like a team" but wistfully accepted that players "need to learn and make mistakes" in order to improve.

So, a point to a lack of Premier League experience? The average age of the Blues side that lost to an Ollie Watkins-inspired Aston Villa was 24.9 years. Despite this, there are still some youngsters who can step up to the plate, possessing that natural leadership. A noticeable absentee, and fine example of this, is Reece James.

Where did Reece James come from?

Born into a football-mad family in Redbridge that included coach father, Nigel and later younger sister Lauren, Reece James shone at junior grassroots level with Kew Park Rangers and Epsom Eagles. So much so, that he was snatched up by Chelsea at just six years old. There was clearly something in the water down there, as Chelsea went back for teammate Conor Gallagher just two years later in 2008.

Soccer Football – Champions League – Round of 16 – Second Leg – Chelsea v Borussia Dortmund – Stamford Bridge, London, Britain – March 7, 2023 Chelsea’s Reece James celebrates after the match REUTERS/Hannah Mckay

Initially, the now marauding wingback James actually began life as a striker. He idolised Didier Drogba yet had to settle with playing further back in order to keep his place. For a quickly adapting player of his nature, this was little issue as first he went down to defensive midfield before the more current familiar right back position.

How much was Reece James worth at the start?

2017 was when James' mainstream emergence started to enter its first real phase. He turned pro that year and topped that by being named Chelsea's Academy Player of the Season as he captained the U18 side to 2017-18's FA Youth Cup victory. He wasn't just knocking on the door of the first team, he was nearly smashing it off its hinges as he received a fresh four-year deal in 2018.

Progress was brilliant, yet with the talent at Maurizio Sarri's exposure, James had to find game time elsewhere. Wigan Athletic was the loan destination and a perfect platform for James. From his free kick goal against Leeds, to earning a place in the Championship Team of the Season – the DW Stadium proved to be a match made in heaven as he proved he could compete in senior men's football.

After that season in which he picked up three club awards including Player of the Year, Reece James' value rose from around £3.5m to nearer £6m, as per Football Transfers' expected transfer value model.

Just how good is Reece James when he's fully fit?

In an almost cruel turn of events, Reece James has been gifted with a superb skill set – yet seemingly a hamstring made of blu-tac. Before being plagued with that injury this term, it was his knee. Whilst being set back though, there have been serious glimpses of his world-class capabilities.

When fit, the 5 foot 10 23-year-old James is up there among the top wingbacks in the top five leagues. If his skills aren't broadly summarised enough from the Sofascore graphic above, looking at his in-depth data reinforces his prevalence as a top name in his position.

What is Reece James worth now?

FBref data shows that in the last year, Reece James has proved a progressive cog for a Chelsea side that relies on his creativity from the right wing-back position. Particularly eye-catching, are the numbers that find him in the upper reaches of his peers. James has 1.83 successful take-ons per 90 minutes – putting him in the top 5% in his position among full-backs in Europe.

Chelsea'sReeceJamesin action

Add to that, his penchant for progressive passes (6.33 per 90) and shot-creating actions (3.46 per 90) those numbers still find him in the top 10%. His expected assists (0.18 per 90) are just outside the top 10%, and given Chelsea's misfiring tendencies last term, his actual assist rate (0.07 per 90) is perhaps more telling of the players around him.

According to Football Transfers, James' market valuation has now soared astronomically, a telling indication of just how well he has developed at Stamford Bridge. Indeed, his current valuation is €57.1m – working out at around £50m. When he returns, could he be the difference-maker for a floundering Chelsea? Only time will tell. The numbers suggest the progressive stalwart could well play his part.

Leeds: Farke must reignite move for 5 ft 7 whiz who’d thrive with Rutter

Leeds United have made a fine start to life back in the Championship this season as they have made themselves play-off contenders so far.

The Whites are currently sitting in fifth-place and have only lost two league matches in 11 outings under German head coach Daniel Farke, who was brought in to replace Sam Allardyce over the summer.

A number of players were snapped up in order to bolster the ex-Norwich City boss' squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, following their relegation from the Premier League.

Jaidon Anthony, Joel Piroe, Joe Rodon, Karl Darlow, Sam Byram, Djed Spence, Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev, and Ethan Ampadu were all signed either on loan or on permanent deals.

Leeds forward Joel Piroe.

Despite the side's strong start to the season, the upcoming January transfer window will provide Farke with an opportunity to improve his team again.

One player whom he must look to reignite his interest in is Genk ace Joseph Paintsil, who would thrive alongside Georgino Rutter if the talented whiz can adapt to English football.

Were Leeds interested in Joseph Paintsil?

The Athletic reported that Leeds made an offer of €10m (£8.7m) to sign the Ghana international during the summer transfer window.

It was stated at the time that the player's preference was a move to Elland Road after a transfer to Championship rivals Southampton had fallen through, due to Paintsil and Paul Onuachu – who was set to go the other way – opting against the switch.

However, the Whites were unable to get a deal over the line for the exciting forward and it has since been revealed, by the player, that it was due to reasons out of their control.

Paintsil claimed that he was not interested in a move to Southampton or Leeds as his dream is to play in the Premier League, or in one of the other major European leagues.

Ghana international Joseph Paintsil.

The £8.7m-rated whiz added that it was not about Farke's side being a 'bad' team but he could not be convinced to make the drop down to the Championship at that moment in time.

However, the German head coach could make a more convincing case to persuade the Genk star to join the Yorkshire-based outfit in January if his team are well in the race for promotion to the top-flight.

The player has confirmed that his dream is to play at the top level in England and Leeds could offer him a good chance to join a side that could be promoted to that level if they are in the play-off, or automatic, mix by the time that January comes around.

Why were Leeds interested in Paintsil?

Farke and the club may have been interested in a deal to sign the Ghana international due to his phenomenal form for Genk throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

The 25-year-old winger showcased his ability to score and create goals at an impressive rate in the Belgian top-flight and his statistics suggest that he could have been a superb addition to Leeds' squad.

Paintsil was a regular for his side over the course of the campaign as he made 36 league appearances and started 36 times, with an average of 81 minutes per outing, as per Sofascore.

Ghana international Joseph Paintsil.

The right-footed whiz was lethal in front of goal and proved himself to be a reliable option to chip in with goals at the top end of the pitch from a wide position.

He ended the Pro League season with a stunning 17 goals from out wide, with only six 'big chances' missed in total. Meanwhile, no Leeds player managed more than 13 league goals last term and no Whites ace has scored more than 17 in a season since Chris Wood in the 2016/17 term.

Paintsil also caught the eye with his ability to carve open the opposition's defence to create opportunities for his teammates. Farke's target created 12 'big chances' and assisted 11 goals in total throughout those 36 outings.

Whereas, no Leeds player produced more than seven assists over the course of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign and no Whites star has hit double figures for assists since Pablo Hernandez did (12) during the 2018/19 Championship season.

These statistics, which were described as "sensational" by Scott Coyne of the Belgian Football Podcast, suggest that the Genk magician has the quality to be a terrific forward for the club and he could thrive alongside Rutter if Farke can snap him up in January.

How has Rutter performed this season?

The French wizard has enjoyed a fantastic start to the campaign and has proven himself to be a big threat at the top end of the pitch at Championship level.

Rutter has contributed with two goals and three assists in nine league starts for the Whites so far this season and has been an exceptional creator for Farke.

The former Hoffenheim prospect has produced ten 'big chances' for his teammates and only been rewarded with three assists for his efforts.

As per FBRef, the 21-year-old maestro ranks within the top 6% of his positional peers at Championship level for xAG (0.49) and shot-creating actions (4.27) per 90.

This essentially means that there are not many players in his position who are able to create high-quality chances as frequently as Rutter.

However, there is work to do with his own finishing as the talented youngster has missed five 'big chances' to go along with his two goals, which suggests that he could be more ruthless in front of goal.

Should Leeds sign Paintsil?

Leeds should, therefore, reignite their interest in Paintsil during the January transfer window as his goalscoring record for Genk suggests that he would thrive alongside Rutter.

The 5 foot 7 talent has proven himself to be a prolific scorer from a wide position and rarely misses presentable opportunities at the top end of the pitch, as shown by his aforementioned statistics from last season.

This suggests that the Whites target would be able to make the most of the chances that the French wizard is putting on a plate for his teammates week-in-week-out.

Paintsil's creative number also indicate that he could provide Rutter with the ammunition he needs to find the back of the net on a regular basis, if the ex-Bundesliga man can find his feet and form in front of goal during the second half of the season.

Newcastle transfer news: Fabrizio Romano drops update on Kalvin Phillips

Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, and Fabrizio Romano has now delivered the chances of him moving to St. James’ Park in January.

How many appearances has Kalvin Phillips made for Man City?

Since putting pen to paper at the Etihad Stadium from Leeds United last summer, Phillips has only made 26 appearances, and he’s really struggled for game time this season having made zero starts and just three substitute appearances in the Premier League (WhoScored – Phillips statistics).

Pep Guardiola’s defensive midfielder still has another five years remaining on his long-term deal (Man City contracts), but due to him clearly being extremely low down in the manager’s pecking order, it’s understandable that he could want to move to a club where he’ll receive more regular minutes.

According to iNews, England’s international has emerged as a target for PIF and Eddie Howe in the northeast, alongside top-flight rivals Everton, as they weigh up their options ahead of January, and the outlet claim that the Sky Blues are willing to put the 27-year-old up for sale due to him being on the fringe of the action.

Kalvin Phillips transfer update

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano shared a transfer update on Kalvin Phillips and admitted that despite there being rumours regarding a move to Newcastle and Everton, they are, as it stands, not in any concrete talks:

Kalvin Phillips – Despite links with Newcastle and Everton, I’m not aware of concrete talks on this one. Phillips wanted to stay at City this summer despite some approaches, so he’s still focused on doing his best for City and then a decision will be made later, like November or December.

"Newcastle won’t decide anything on transfer targets before they know what happens in their Champions League group.”

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

How much does Kalvin Phillips earn?

In M11, Phillips currently pockets £150k-per-week (Man City salaries), which he isn’t really earning considering that he’s not been able to force his way into the starting squad, but should he make the switch to Newcastle, he could definitely flourish under Howe, especially considering that he would surely relish the opportunity to begin a new adventure.

Tackling

The 2022 World Cup participant is currently recording a 90% pass success rate which highlights his calmness and composure on the ball, but he also loves to get stuck in having won all of his tackles made in the top-flight so far this season (FBRef – Phillips statistics).

Phillips, who has the versatility to operate in three roles in the midfield as well as at centre-back, can even contribute to efforts in the final third having clocked up 28 involvements, 14 goals and the same number of assists, since the start of his career (Transfermarkt – Phillips statistics), so this could be a risk worth taking for the Magpies hierarchy.

Arsenal: Arteta expected to move for "unique" £80m star who likes the club

Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta by extension are "expected" to battle for a "unique" player who's already professed his admiration for the club.

Who have Arsenal signed 2023?

Edu and Gunners transfer chiefs sought to bring in a quartet of new arrivals over the 2023 summer transfer window' spending north of £200 million on the signings of club-record capture Declan Rice, defender Jurrien Timber, forward Kai Havertz and goalkeeper David Raya

It was a real statement of intent and show of ambition as Arsenal seek to challenge last season's treble-winners, Man City, for the Premier League title once again. The north London side came pretty close last term, but injuries to the likes of William Saliba resulted in a drop-off as City eventually ran away with the domestic crown.

Folarin Balogun, Granit Xhaka, Matt Turner, Auston Trusty, Pablo Mari, Kieran Tierney, Rob Holding, Nuno Tavares, Marquinhos, Nicolas Pepe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Albert Sambi Lokonga all made way to balance the books, with the aforementioned departing either temporarily or on a permanent basis.

While Arsenal have started the season with some promise, Arteta will be unhappy to have dropped points in two of their opening six matches already. 2-2 draws at home to both Fulham and arch rivals Tottenham mean Pep Guardiola's imperious City side currently sit four points above them in the table.

However, Arsenal do remain unbeaten; joining Spurs, Liverpool and Man City as the only top flight sides who are still yet to suffer a single defeat.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

While the club significantly invested in bolstering their squad ahead of this season, Arsenal didn't manage to secure the services of a world class centre-forward. Havertz was instead brought in as a makeshift option but hasn't quite done enough to impress on-lookers thus far, having been subject to fierce criticism at times.

As a result, it is believed they're eyeing up a new striker for the winter window, and one player to be repeatedly linked is Brentford's Ivan Toney. The Englishman, who is currently serving a ban for gambling breaches, is on Arsenal's radar with a report from broadcast giant ESPN sharing the latest.

According to their information, Arsenal are "expected" to test Brentford's resolve in keeping Toney this January. Edu and co are believed to be real fans of the forward as they weigh up mid-season attacking options.

ESPN add that Toney could cost as much as £80 million, but the player has previously lifted the lid on his admiration for Arsenal."The next club I go to, if I was to move, would be the right club," he said to the Diary of a CEO podcast last month. "I've been a Liverpool fan my whole life… But from young, I've liked Arsenal. I've liked watching Arsenal and how they play and how passionate their fans are."

Toney scored 20 league goals in 33 appearances last season, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank also calling him a "unique" and "amazing" player.

“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” Frank said. “The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member."
