CSK target top spot; RCB look to rise further from the bottom

The hosts have been over-reliant on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for their runs. Will one of them do the job again against CSK?

The Preview by Sruthi Ravindranath24-Apr-20183:42

Agarkar: RCB over-reliant on Kohli, de Villiers

Big pictureVirat Kohli and AB de Villiers. The two usual suspects have been the ones making the runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore, with the rest struggling to find any kind of form. While Kohli’s efforts have come in defeats, de Villiers bailed RCB out in two tense situations – smashing an unbeaten 90 in their previous match and a 57 against Kings XI Punjab.Their opponents at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, however, have had different match-winners in their four wins so far. Without being heavily dependent on an individual, Chennai Super Kings had at least one batsman step up in each victory. What looked like a bowling-heavy team with eight bowlers during their first game, is now a well-rounded side with eight batsmen, including a number of finishers to do the job.ESPNcricinfo LtdForm guide (most recent match first)

Royal Challengers Bangalore: defeated Delhi Daredevils by six wickets, lost to Mumbai Indians by 46 runs, lost to Rajasthan Royals by 19 runs, defeated Kings XI Punjab by four wickets
Chennai Super Kings: defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by four runs, defeated Rajasthan Royals by 64 runs, lost to Kings XI Punjab by four runs, defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets

Both RCB and CSK seem to unleash their best and the worst in the death overs. They are the best batting sides and the least effective bowling units in this critical period. While CSK have scored at 12.12 and conceded at 10.89, RCB’s numbers are 11.24 and 12.86 respectively. In the match against Delhi Daredevils, RCB let them score 57 runs in the last four overs after having kept the run-rate to 7.31 until then.ESPNcricinfo LtdBowling woes aside, RCB also have a batting line-up to be concerned about. They have tried three opening combinations in five games – Quinton de Kock being the only constant – and have had just one 30-plus partnership for the first wicket. Their opening stand lasts 10.6 balls on average, which indicates they have not survived even two overs on an average this season. None of the RCB batsmen apart from Kohli and de Villiers have made a 50-plus score: Mandeep Singh’s 47 is the best of the rest.In the newsCSK legspinner Imran Tahir, who missed the previous match because of illness, said on Twitter that he was feeling well and was “all set” for the game. The likely XIsRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Manan Vohra 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Corey Anderson/Colin de Grandhomme, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Mohammed Siraj/Kulwant Khejroliya, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalChennai Super Kings: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Sam Billings, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Dwayne Bravo, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Deepak Chahar, 10 Karn Sharma, 11 Shardul ThakurStrategy puntCSK could save Shane Watson to stop de Villiers. In T20s, Watson has dismissed de Villiers two times, giving away 55 runs in 49 balls.RCB could use the legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal against the in-form Suresh Raina. Against Chahal in the IPL, Raina has been dismissed four times in eight matches. He has scored just 79 runs in 57 balls. Both the teams are likely to field unchanged XIs. CSK’s strategy to play Ambati Rayudu at No. 4 had paid off; Tahir, although up for selection, might be left out considering he has had a middling tournament so far.Stats that matter While MS Dhoni boasts an average of 61.8 at the Chinnaswamy, Raina has scored only 156 runs there in nine innings.Kohli’s tally of 706 runs against CSK is his highest against any team. While he is only 18 short of 2000 runs at the venue, Kohli needs 10 runs to overtake Raina as the top run-scorer in the IPL over 11 seasons.Although the record between these two sides in Bengaluru is tied at 3-3, the last two encounters did not go well for RCB – they scored 154 both times and lost.Fantasy picksNo doubts about this: Kohli and de Villiers would be obvious picks, considering their records at home. Kohli has three centuries and de Villiers has 11 50-plus scores in Bengaluru.Deepak Chahar has the best economy rate during Powerplay for Super Kings this season: 7.50. He has conceded just 98 runs in 13 overs in this period, and also took three wickets at an economy of 3.75 to deny Sunrisers Hyderabad a win on Sunday.Quote”It feels like a dream. Even when I was with RPS and when Dhoni wasn’t the captain, he supported me a lot. I was thinking if he’d pick me in the squad for CSK. He’s a very different person. When a person like him gives you confidence then then it’s obviously good for me.” –

Newcastle: Howe must bin Magpies flop who’s cost £1.2m per goal

The Magpies may be flying now, but that has not always been the case. Newcastle United have endured years of strife and suffering under the former rule of Mike Ashley, whose interminable hold on the club has now been released, and prosperity looms large.

The new ownership was closely followed by the appointment of Eddie Howe in the managerial role, and for all the newfound wealth, it is his aptitude that has transcended the exploits of the squad.

Going from relegation strugglers to formidable Champions League contenders in less than two years, Newcastle have rectified the wrongs of the past and then some, with sights now set on erecting an impregnable position at the forefront of the European game.

And despite the financial strength, technical director Dan Ashworth deserves all the plaudits for the diligence in conducting business smoothly and shrewdly, with seven Premier League outfits yielding a higher net spend across the 2023 summer transfer window.

As mentioned, it really hasn't always been like this, with there being some pretty stonking howlers over the years.

Who are Newcastle's worst signings?

Okay, let's start with the big one: Michael Owen. The 2001 Ballon d'Or winner, Owen had blitzed onto the scene as one of the most prodigious youngsters of English birth in decades, having scored 46 Premier League goals as a teenager – the record total to this day.

Signed from Real Madrid for £17m in 2005 – a club record, beating the £15m fee paid for Alan Shearer – Owen arrived with a weight of expectation but only managed to score 30 goals across four seasons due to incessant injuries that ultimately proved the downfall of his position as one of the finest strikers in Europe.

It was exacerbated by the winding down of his contract amid a relegation battle and his since criticism of the club, alienating him from the fanbase.

And who could forget the likes of Remy Cabella, who signed from French side Montpellier for just over £7m before scoring just once from 34 matches and heading back to his homeland with his tail between his legs in 2015.

The list goes on, and while Matt Ritchie, who plies his trade on Tyneside to this day, doesn't represent the worst piece of business of all time at Newcastle, he is undoubtedly a reminder of the previous misdealings before the genesis of this developing golden age.

When did Newcastle sign Matt Ritchie?

Newcastle signed Ritchie from Bournemouth for an initial £10m in 2016 following the Tyneside club's relegation from the Premier League in 2016, and while he has chalked up 57 direct contributions from 198 appearances since joining, 26 came in the first season, in the Championship.

Since that maiden stage in black and white, the 34-year-old's influence has waned further by the season, where once he flickered brightly on the Premier League stage, now he scarcely emits the faintest glow.

Indeed, the 16-cap Scotland international has yet to feature this season – an unused substitute against Manchester City in both the league and the Carabao Cup – which compounds his recent woes after forging only ten outings across all competitions last term – failing to start once in the top-flight.

When combining his transfer fee with his wages – Ritchie earns £45k-per-week and has done so the duration of his Toon career – it's deducible that he will have cost the club £29m in total by the summer of 2024, when his contract will expire. All of that rather alarmingly means when you consider his 24 goals in black & white, he's set them back £1.2m every strike.

There is certainly no notion of renewal, and nor should there be; the Toon are very much on the rise, and as ruthless as it sounds, it is imperative that Howe eradicates the residual inferiority from the days of the outfit's past.

How good has Matt Ritchie been at Newcastle?

Once chastised for his "woeful" performances by journalist Kev Lawson, Ritchie has not been performing well over the past few years, very much at the epicentre of his side's troubles in 2021 before Howe's arrival.

Indeed, with Howe joining in November 2021, Ritchie would earn all 14 of his starts in the top flight before the turn of the calendar year, emphasising the absence of trust from his former Bournemouth boss, who oversaw his sale in the first place.

In fact, the dynamic ace has only scored twice since the 2019/20 season, with both goals coming in that very Premier League campaign, emphasising just how wide of the mark his displays have been over the past several years, where more than a few Magpies have been left scratching their heads as to why he still remains at St. James' Park at all.

There are still certain members of the Newcastle squad to need moving on, and alongside Ritchie stands fellow full-back Javier Manquillo, who has been similarly peripheral since Howe took to the helm.

Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo.

The Spaniard was signed for £4.5m from Spanish side Atletico Madrid in 2017, one year after Ritchie, and has only made 110 appearances, branded "Championship" level by Jamie Carragher, who lamented his "really poor" defending.

Manquillo, aged 29, is also headed for the exit at the end of the season, and while he rather steals a living at £35k-per-week, he has cost the club far less than his Scottish counterpart, albeit having played a role of even greater insignificance.

Having only made 19 displays under Howe, Manquillo's acquisition is definitely not one that will go down in eternal memory, and if it does, it will be for the wrong reasons.

Ritchie was once a solid Premier League player but he has fallen onto the fringe over the past few years, and as Newcastle bask in the rising sun at St. James' Park, the veteran playmaker has unfortunately been hung up to dry, when he should have moved on years ago. Indeed, if there was ever a time to banish him, now is surely that time.

Sheffield Wednesday news: Joe Crann drops Danny Rohl manager update

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with making Danny Rohl their next manager, and a new update has now emerged over his future, courtesy of reliable journalist Joe Crann.

Danny Rohl to replace Xisco Munoz?

The Owls enjoyed such a memorable 2022/23 season, gaining promotion to the Championship from League One, following a dramatic playoff final win over Barnsley. The hope was that Wednesday could become a solid second-tier team again from the off, but there was the surprise decision to part ways with manager Darren Moore at the end of the campaign, with Xisco Munoz replacing him in the Hillsborough hot seat.

Things went disastrously for the Spaniard, however, with no wins picked up at all in the league prior to his sacking last week, and the hunt is now on to find a replacement for him, as relegation looks to avoided at the first attempt.

The individual who has seemingly emerged as the favourite to come in and replace Munoz as Sheffield Wednesday's next boss is Rohl, even though the 34-year-old has never actually been a first-team manager before, instead enjoying coaching roles at Southampton and Bayern Munich, not to mention recently being assistant manager of Germany's national team.

Now, a fresh claim has emerged over his future, as Wednesday look to name their new manager during the current international break.

Joe Crann's update on Sheff Wed's next manager

Taking to X on Tuesday, Crann dropped an important update on the chances of Rohl becoming Sheffield Wednesday's new manager, claiming that he is still far from being announced as the Owls' boss, urging fans to be patient:

"With regards to #SWFC and the new manager, these things can take a bit of time and there are lots of moving parts, also plenty of discussions to be had. I know there’s been talk of it being done, but as of this morning Danny Rohl to S6 isn’t finalised. Patience needed."

There is understandable frustration from Wednesday supporters at the moment, with many no doubt desperate to see Rohl announced as manager as soon as possible, but as Crann alludes to, some patience will be required.

It certainly looks as though the German is the top candidate to come in as Munoz's successor, and while his lack of experience may come as a concern to some, it would be an ambitious appointment of a young coach who was highly thought of during his time at Bayern and Saints.

Rohl's coaching history is clearly impressive, but as mentioned, if he were to take up the role at Hillsborough, it would be his first senior managerial role, which does bring an element of risk with it. If those high up at the club believe he is the best possibly candidate for the job, though, they need to be trusted, even though the decision to appoint Munoz ultimately proved to be a mistake.

Whoever comes in has a big job on his hands, with work to do with make up the deficit on those outside the Championship relegation, but Rohl is a young man who could bring fresh ideas to the club.

Dominic Bess takes rapid rise in his stride as Lord's Test debut beckons

It says something for Dom Bess’s impatience that, on the brink of a Test debut at the age of 20, he describes himself as “a late developer”.It says something for his drive, too, that aged just 14, he made the decision to leave the Sidmouth club with which his family had been associated for many years – his father, grandfather and cousins all play or played there – in search of first-team opportunities. It may not seem so now, but that was a somewhat controversial move at the time. A move that had some muttering their disapproval. And it says plenty about England’s desperation to find a Test-quality spinner that, if Bess plays on Thursday – and he surely will; England don’t need five seamers – he will be England’s third debutant specialist spinner within four Tests and the youngest specialist finger-spinner in their history. Yes, he owes it in part to injuries to both Mason Crane (who made his debut in Sydney) and Jack Leach (who made his debut in Christchurch), but the fact is England are taking a chance on a man not guaranteed a place in the Somerset side who has played only five first-class (and three Championship) games away from Taunton, and has never played at Lord’s. It’s a gamble.Or, as Bess prefers to look at, an opportunity. And, while you can never entirely tell, one that seems unlikely to over-awe him.Following on from his impressive first-class debut against Pakistan less than two years ago – he had the confidence to pick Younis Khan’s brains after play – he then claimed five-fors in his first two Championship matches (against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire), another on debut for England Lions and making a maiden first-class century when selected for the MCC to play against the Champion county (Essex) in Barbados a few weeks ago.He has seven five-fors in his 16 first-class games, which is only two fewer than Moeen Ali in 179 first-class games. In between times, he impressed the England management with his athleticism and character when given the opportunity to train with the full squad. That character shone through when Bess was obliged to give his first press conferences to the international ‘pack’ at Lord’s on Tuesday. While some have wilted in that spotlight – and it really can be quite intimidating – Bess was open, engaging and witty. Having taken the call informing him of his selection in Ikea, he still hasn’t bought the sofa he was after – he left immediately to tell his mum and dad. However, he good-naturedly suggested he should have “a quiet word” with the store in light of the “bit of press” exposure his comments brought them.”Not yet,” he replied when asked if he was the new ‘face’ of Ikea. “But I hope so. My girlfriend would be happy.”His mum, he says, would prefer he is referred to as Dominic rather than Dom.Dom Bess was involved in his first England training session•Getty Images

More serious questions were dealt with equally comfortably. His relationship with the unfortunate Leach? “He’s a top man and we’re very good mates. I look up to him and he is delighted that it was me who replaced him although obviously absolutely gutted.”His approach? “To enjoy it!”His spin-bowling role-model? “Graeme Swann. He’d always attack the stumps which brought a lot of dismissals into play.”There may be some serious lessons to learn from Bess’s development, too. Certainly it is intriguing that the last time a pair of quality spinners developed at the same county – Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann – they did so, in part, through the spin-friendly surfaces created at their club, Northants. Now that history has repeated itself – Somerset’s Taunton pitch has been famously (some would say infamously) spin-friendly in recent years – it might well be worth reflecting on county cricket’s apparent aversion to such surfaces.Leach and Bess – having benefited from a high volume of overs through playing on a turning surface – could well be bowling in tandem for England by the end of year. Those who have moaned about the pitches at Taunton in recent years might well be myopically holding back the development of the national side.It is noticeable, too, that Bess and Leach have played very little white-ball cricket. Leach has never played a first-team T20 match (and has played only 16 List A games), while Bess has played only one T20 and six List A matches. The relevance? While white-ball spinners are inclined – obliged, even – to fire the ball in pretty fast and flat and very often on the legs, the red-ball spinner has more scope to bowl with flight and a more attacking line. Trying to learn such different trades at the same time is not easy.”I’ve only played one T20 and six List A games, so it’s interesting to think that maybe this opportunity has come around because I’ve just done red-ball,” he said. “And there’s a massive gap between white- and red-ball. In T20 people are just trying to haul you out of the park every ball. That’s when you go quite flat. That could potentially be why.”With Bess a fine fielder and improving batsman – if Chris Woakes misses out in this match, Bess could bat at No. 8 – there will, no doubt, be a temptation to play him in more white-ball games. Perhaps for both country and county. And, understandably, he is keen to play in all formats. But, if Test cricket really is the priority and pinnacle – as we are often told – might it make sense to delay Bess’s involvement for a few more months at least?Such matters can wait. Bess has a wonderful opportunity to impress in the coming days. And, while a pitch expected to offer him little and a line-up which traditionally plays spin well (or at least far better than the average county player) offers the prospect of a steep learning curve, he gives every indication that he will relish every moment of it.

Brook's impressive century puts Essex's unbeaten run under threat

Ed Smith, the new national selector, is probably more concerned about the present. Instead, he would have left Chelmsford wondering if he had received a vision of the future.

Dan Norcross at Chelmsford05-May-20181:32

Harry’s Game at Essex and Sussex

ScorecardA quite splendid 124 from 19 year old Harry Brook has put Yorkshire in a great position to end Essex’s unbeaten run in the County Championship that stretches back to September 2016.On a day of yet more discombobulating twists and turns, Brook’s innings was a cut above anything else on show. After the dizzying lunacy of the first day, on which 20 wickets fell before tea, a sense of normality finally descended on Chelmsford in the shape of Che Pujara, Brook and Joe Root.Resuming this morning on 161 for 2, Pujara and Brook took the novel approach of building their innings, blocking the straight balls, working the wayward ones into gaps and batting as if they believed they could be there all day, until Pujara inexplicably shouldered arms to a delivery from Siddle that smashed into his off stump half way up.This brought Joe Root to the crease and after his first baller yesterday he looked determined to make amends. Not quite at his fluent best he nonetheless provided the perfect foil for the 19-year-old Brook as he shepherded him to his maiden first class hundred. At 19 years and 72 days old, Brook became the fourth youngest Yorkshireman to complete a century after Len Hutton, Bill Athey and Azeem Rafiq. And this innings was no fluke. It was expertly constructed. He never fell into a rut, he attempted no injudicious shots (until he was out skying Harmer to long-on) and refused to be unnerved by a pitch on which no one else had prospered.By the time he was out his 124 would prove more than Lyth, Root, Ballance, Westley, Cook and Bopara could muster in both their innings. Head Selector Ed Smith and Angus Fraser, who were seated in front of the commentary box for much of the day, will have been hugely impressed by what they saw, but equally frustrated that older, more likely selections were failing to master the conditions anything like as well as the precocious Brook.Harry Brook in action•Getty Images

It’s certainly true to say that this pitch is at its most treacherous when used in tandem with a new, hard ball, but it’s hard to understand exactly why Yorkshire’s 2nd innings imploded much as their first had. From the sunlit uplands of 276 for 3 in the 71st over they lost their last seven wickets for 53 runs. Root will be the most annoyed after dragging a wide ball from Ravi Bopara onto his stumps to trigger the collapse.Credit is also due to Essex who stuck to tight, disciplined lines, especially after lunch. Peter Siddle picked up four more wickets to finish with match figures of 8 for 72 and Jamie Porter was particularly effective with the new ball, taking another three to add to his burgeoning tally at Chelmsford.Having induced yet another twist in this endlessly fascinating game, Essex would have fancied their chances of knocking off the 238 set for victory, but once again the new ball proved the batsmen’s undoing. Both Nick Browne and Alastair Cook were dropped early in their innings but the introduction of Steve Patterson altered the game for the umpteenth time.Cook had looked in prime touch, stroking some elegant cover drives (yes really) and finding the gaps in his 33 ball 26 before he was undone by the ball of the match. A ball so good it’s worth playing on a perpetual loop in a hipster art club in Shoreditch. Maybe convert it into black and white for the full effect. From around the wicket it pitched on middle before demolishing the off-stump. Within three balls Tom Westley was gone, lbw to Patterson for a third consecutive duck, spanning seven balls.Six overs later Patterson repeated the trick getting rid of Browne and Bopara in the same over. At 55 for 4 thoughts turned, like yesterday to the possibility of an extra half hour but Lawrence and Ten Doeschate dug in, clung on and are both there to hunt down the remaining 141 required for victory. It looks like a tall order but the only session where batting has looked easy was this morning’s under cloudless skies with a 31 over old ball. The forecast is for more of the same and the ball is 32 overs old. Just saying…..

Skipper Roderick ensures Gloucestershire flying start

Essex thought Ashar Zaidi had carried them to a competitive total but Gareth Roderick and George Hankins found a response

ESPNcricinfo staff20-May-2018
ScorecardGareth Roderick posted a superb 87 not out as Gloucestershire beat Essex by four wickets in Bristol and register their second victory in three days in the Royal London Cup South Group.Ashar Zaidi top-scored with 82 as Essex raised a competitive 287 for 6 on a decent batting track after winning the toss. But Roderick produced a true captain’s innings, staging a match-winning sixth-wicket partnership of 79 in seven overs with the hard-hitting Ryan Higgins as Gloucestershire reached their target with 11 balls to spare.Playing only his fifth List-A game, Academy product George Hankins registered a second white-ball half century inside three days, producing some clean hitting to accrue seven boundaries in a crowd-pleasing innings of 77 from 98 balls.Although he dragged a wideish delivery from Ravi Bopara onto his stumps eight runs short of his highest score, he nevertheless provided Gloucestershire’s reply with solid foundations.Simon Harmer kept Essex in the hunt, accounting for danger-men Ian Cockbain and Jack Taylor with his off spin, but Gloucestershire held the upper hand while Roderick remained at large.Demonstrating a cool head, Gloucestershire’s captain combined deft placement with feverish running between the wickets to raise 50 from 55 balls before pressing the accelerator button. Higgins provided rich entertainment in a murderous innings of 47 from 29 balls, accruing three fours and three sixes to break Essex spirits.Openers Adam Wheater and Varun Chopra had earlier afforded the Eagles a flying start, taking advantage of some loose bowling to raise 74 in 12 overs. But Gloucestershire quickly redressed the balance, slow left armer Tom Smith pinning Wheater lbw with his first ball, and then taking a superb diving catch at mid-off to remove Tom Westley without scoring before inducing Dan Lawrence to loft a miscued drive to mid-on.When Chopra flashed hard at a wide delivery from Chris Liddle and was caught at point for 42 in the 17th over, Essex had lost four wickets in 33 balls and were teetering at 93 for 4.Charged with the task of rebuilding the innings, Bopara dominated stands of 47 and 57 with Ryan ten Doeschate and Zaidi for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively. Having grafted 50 from 70 balls, he chased a ball outside off stump and was caught behind to become Liddle’s third victim.Zaidi picked up the cudgels thereafter, striking seven fours and two sixes and adding 90 for the sixth wicket with Harmer to propel the visitors to a competitive total.

Aston Villa transfer news: NSWE & Monchi eyeing January move for "star man"

Aston Villa are starting to find consistency under Unai Emery this season, having got off to a mixed start. The Midlands club followed up their 6-1 thrashing of Brighton & Hove Albion with a dramatic last-minute victory in the Europa Conference League against Zrinjski, and will be raring to go in their next game – a West Midlands derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Latest Aston Villa transfer news

Off the pitch, meanwhile, the Villans, and by extension owners NSWE and president of football operations Monchi, appear to have their eye on the January transfer window. With that said, reports suggest that those at Villa Park are still eyeing a 2024 move for a certain La Liga star.

Villa weren't afraid to splash the cash during the summer transfer window, and have been rewarded for doing so ever since, with the likes of Moussa Diaby playing an important role in their recent form. By January, we could be looking at a Villa side capable of breaking into the top six, especially with the right additions, which is where Marcos Acuna could come in.

According to reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, which provided a transfer update on Acuna, the left-back was one step away from swapping Sevilla for Villa in the summer before an untimely injury put an end to any potential move. Now, the club are reportedly eyeing a return for the full-back if he is fit and playing in January, as Sevilla look to raise funds through player sales.

With that said, the January transfer window should certainly be an interesting one from an Aston Villa point of view, with Emery potentially handed more reinforcements to boost his side's unexpected bid for a place in the Premier League's elite.

How good is Marcos Acuna?

Back from injury, Acuna will hope to help Sevilla move back towards La Liga's top sides, given that they currently sit as low as 15th after a disappointing start to the season. Statistically speaking, too, the Argentina left-back has already outperformed current Aston Villa option Lucas Digne in a number of areas, as per FBref.

At his best, Acuna has earned a fair amount of praise, including from journalist Josh Bunting, who previously labelled Acuna as a "star man" back in 2020. It certainly seems as though Villa are looking in the right direction when it comes to targets, especially given that Acuna can play left-back, on the left of midfield and as a left-winger, potentially handing Emery a boost when the January transfer opens. The Sevilla man could be one to keep an eye on, that's for sure.
