Windward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago score sizeable victories

A round-up of the Group A matches in the WICB Regional Super 50 played on February 10, 2017

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2017Windward Islands recorded a comfortable six-wicket win over Kent at Coolidge in their final match of the Regional Super50. Kavem Hodge, who had spent most of the tournament batting at No. 6 for Windwards, struck his maiden List A fifty after being promoted to open the batting to chase Kent’s 205.Hodge got the Windwards chase going in the right direction after the early fall of Johnson Charles for 5 by adding 54 for the second wicket with Devon Smith (32) and another 86 for the third wicket with Sunil Ambris. Hodge ended with 68 and Ambris 48, just two shy of what would have been his seventh fifty in eight games during group play. Ambris ends the round-robin stage with 423 runs at 70.50, second overall behind Leeward Islands captain Kieran Powell’s aggregate of 509 at 84.83.When Hodge fell in the 40th, 31 runs were still required for victory. Captain Liam Sebastien and Kyle Mayers knocked off the rest of the runs, securing victory with 13 balls to spare. Kent had stumbled to 35 for 5 after choosing to bat at the toss before a 104-run sixth-wicket stand between Will Gidman and Adam Rouse salvaged their innings. Shane Shillingford eventually dismissed both men for 94 and 40 respectively and Kent’s tail fought until the 49th over before they were bowled out with seven balls left in the innings.Trinidad & Tobago rolled past West Indies Under-19 by 182 runs at North Sound to set up a first-place showdown with Leeward Islands on Sunday. The win over West Indies U-19 moved T&T to 6-1 in Group B, the same record as Leewards though T&T trails Leewards by two points due to the bonus point structure in round-robin play. The winner of Sunday’s match will top Group A and most likely face Jamaica while the loser will probably face Barbados, who hold a five-point advantage at the top of Group B heading into the final round of group matches.Kyle Hope, Jason Mohammed and Denesh Ramdin each struck half-centuries in T&T’s total of 290 for 5 after West Indies U-19 opted to bowl. Hope made 70 off 98 balls, adding 58 for the first wicket with Kjorn Ottley before teaming up with Mohammed to add 74 for the third wicket. Mohammed top scored with 84 off 73 balls and produced a 92-run fourth-wicket partnership with Ramdin before falling late in the innings. Ramdin took T&T through to the finish, ending on 60 not out off 42 balls to ensure the target would be well out of reach for West Indies U-19.Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre continued his fine tournament by doing most of the damage during a seven-over middle overs spell of 3 for 6 that accounted for top-scorer Emmanuel Stewart for 20 and captain Kirstan Kallicharan for 16. West Indies U-19 were eventually bowled out for 108 in 29.2 overs. Their final game is a rematch with Kent, the only side West Indies U-19 has beaten in the competition.

Behrendorff takes 14 in innings win for WA

Jason Behrendorff finished with 14 for 89, the ninth-best match figures in Sheffield Shield history, as Western Australia wrapped up an innings victory over Victoria inside two days at the WACA. Behrendorff added five second-innings wickets to his nine from the first innings as Victoria were tumbled out for 130, losing by an innings and 38 runs.Behrendorff was just the second man in the post-war era to collect as many as 14 wickets in a Sheffield Shield game – Terry Alderman was the other, having picked up 14 for 87 in a match against New South Wales in 1981, also at the WACA. It completed a remarkable comeback match for Behrendorff, who was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left fibula in early December. The second morning began with Western Australia at 4 for 178, and while they were able to add only 107 to their overnight total it was more than enough to ensure they did not have to bat again. Behrendorff began Victoria’s second innings by scything through Travis Dean, Marcus Harris and Marcus Stoinis within his first four overs.Aaron Finch provided some resistance with an unbeaten 65, but the rest of the Victorians struggled, with 17-year-old Cameron Green picking up 3 for 20. Behrendorff returned to claim the final two wickets of the game, to finish with 5 for 52 to add to his 9 for 37 from the first innings, which were the fifth-best innings figures in Shield history.

Tottenham: Spurs Star Now "Closer And Closer" To Exit

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is getting "closer and closer" to Bayern Munich with Spurs and the Germans "negotiating to reach an agreement".

Who is leaving Spurs this summer?

Ange Postecoglou's arrival marks the beginning of a new era and the return of attacking football at N17, with the Australian already receiving chairman Daniel Levy's backing before he's even officially started.

The former Celtic boss is set to begin his reign as Spurs manager tomorrow but has already seen both goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and playmaker James Maddison join his new club permanently.

They're also chasing a new centre-back signing, with talks reportedly ongoing for Micky van de Ven of Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba.

To fund these moves, though, Levy and the north Londoners will need to generate cash through player sales – and there are plenty of squad members to choose from.

Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have all been linked with exits, while Spurs could also look to offload Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele (The Telegraph).

Harry Winks is thought to be already on his way to Leicester City, while one player who Spurs definitely won't want to part ways with is Kane.

Spurs have already rejected a £60 million verbal offer from Bayern Munich in recent days, but according to TUTTOmercatoWEB, the Bavarians are coming back in again.

This time, they're set to offer an all-in bid of around £70 million for Kane, with TMW's headline stating Kane is getting "closer and closer" to Bayern.

Both Tottenham and Thomas Tuchel's side are allegedly in "constant contact", whilst "negotiating to reach an agreement" around the £70m fixed base.

Levy, though, is demanding a minimum of £86m for Kane, according to this report.

What's been said about Harry Kane?

The 29-year-old has been praised throughout his career, and for good reason.

Kane is both Spurs' all-time top goalscorer, having recently surpassed the legendary Jimmy Greaves, with Tottenham's striker also taking over Wayne Rooney as England's greatest ever goal-getter.

Called a "genius" by football writer Andrew Gaffney, the former Leyton Orient loanee has also been seriously endorsed by former Lilywhites boss Antonio Conte.

"We are talking about a world class striker,” Conte said.

“He deserves the best because he's a great worker, hard worker… this is not normal because usually the players that have talent many times don't like to work hard because they have talent.

“In my career I didn't have great talent [so] for this reason I worked hard. What I liked about him from the first time was his ability. He was a big example for his team-mates."

Celtic: Kieran Tierney would consider Parkhead return

Celtic could look at a season-long loan move for Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney this summer, according to reports.

Could Celtic sign Kieran Tierney?

The Hoops have made a head start on their summer business under new manager Brendan Rodgers, with 20-year-old midfielder Odin Thiago Holm signing a five-year deal.

He looks set to be the first of many through the door, with Parkhead officials reportedly handing Rodgers a £30m transfer budget over the coming months.

One player who has been linked with a reunion with Rodgers is Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey, who will soon be out of contract with the Foxes, and another player who the Northern Irishman knows well is Tierney, with speculation over a return emerging.

The Scottish Sun shared an update in the last 48 hours regarding Celtic and Tierney, claiming the former Hoops defender would consider a return to Parkhead in what ‘would be a stunning statement of intent’.

They say that a season-long loan could be a possibility if a substantial loan fee and compromise over wages can be agreed with Arsenal and the player.

However, the report adds that Premier League side Newcastle United are the favourites to sign Tierney, who is weighing up his future following a frustrating 2022/23 season.

Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.

Kieran Tierney’s career…

Tierney, dubbed an ‘absolute baller’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig, progressed through the Celtic academy and made 170 senior appearances for the Hoops, scoring eight times and registering 37 assists.

The 26-year-old won 11 major honours with Celtic and made a £25m move to Arsenal back in 2019, where he has gone on to win the FA Cup and Community Shield.

The Scot, on £110,000-a-week at the Emirates, shares the same agency as Hoops midfielder Aaron Mooy and has turned out on 123 occasions for the Gunners, however, he started just six times in the Premier League last season.

Celtic brought in left-back Alexandro Bernabei last summer, but after making more appearances under Rodgers than Mikel Arteta, perhaps a reunion with the Hoops boss could appeal to Tierney. Celtic can offer Champions League football and possibly regular game time back in Scotland, making this one to watch.

When Will Arsenal Sign Declan Rice? Hammers Ace Set To Move

West Ham United's captain Declan Rice has been the talk of the transfer window so far, and with so many twists and turns surrounding his future, Football FanCast is here to keep you informed on all the latest updates.

What's the latest on Rice?

After two failed bids, Arsenal's third offer worth £105m has been accepted by the Hammers.

Talks will continue over the structure of the deal, but by all accounts, Mikel Arteta should have his man.

The Gunners have been working tirelessly to reach an agreement for Rice and have faced competition for his signature throughout. The highly sought-after midfielder was subject to a £90m bid from treble winners Manchester City, but that effort was knocked back.

The Citizens then withdrew from the race after deciding against matching Arsenal's colossal bid, which would've come as a relief to Arteta and the Gunners board.

Now, after a long drawn-out transfer saga, Rice is closing in on a move to the Premier League runners-up, but his medical won't take place until the structure of the payment is agreed with the Irons.

Who else was interested?

Apart from the aforementioned Arsenal and Manchester City, Manchester United had been touted as potential suitors.

According to Football Insider, the Red Devils were prepared to offer £45m plus two players – one of whom was believed to be captain Harry Maguire – for Rice.

But that deal never transpired and Erik ten Hag's side seem focused on landing Chelsea's Mason Mount.

Chelsea had registered their interest in the 43-cap England international but appeared more intent on trying to bring Moisés Caicedo to Stamford Bridge. The Guardian further added that the prospect of losing Mount had not helped their chances of signing his best friend.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were another club mooted as a potential destination for Rice but they withdrew their interest after the deal became more and more expensive.

Who did Rice want to join?

Rice's preferred destination always appeared to be Arsenal. The Guardian reported earlier this month that he would like to remain in London and be close to his family after becoming a father last year.

He had held talks with Pep Guardiola, and there was a feeling City could potentially hijack a deal, particularly after İlkay Gündoğan departure, but there was no indication to suggest his head had turned away from a move to the Gunners.

He admires Arteta's playing style and recognises he would be a regular starter at the Emirates.

Man Utd Could Sign £34m ‘Beast’ To Rival Luke Shaw

Manchester United are reportedly interested in a Serie A ace, as Erik ten Hag aims to bolster his squad in the direction of challenging at the top next season.

The Red Devils showed signs of reaching the heights of Manchester City and Arsenal last campaign, however, were unable to keep their momentum which saw them finish third in the table.

The Dutchman impressed during his first season at Old Trafford and could push the club to greater heights next term by recruiting smartly this summer, which is something he could accomplish by signing the latest individual linked to the club.

What’s the latest on Federico Dimarco to Man United?

As reported by The Independent, Manchester United have shown interest in Inter Milan defender Federico Dimarco.

The report states that the Premier League giants are ‘set to rival’ Real Madrid for the Italian, claiming that both clubs have ‘spoken’ to Inter about the full-back.

While no estimated asking fee for the defender is reported, the 25-year-old is valued at €40m (£34m) by CIES Football Observatory.

What could Federico Dimarco offer to Man United?

Described as having ‘immense versatility’ by journalist Miguel Delaney via The Independent, the Milan-born gem has shone this season in what has been a memorable campaign for his boyhood club.

In a year that saw Inter make the Champions League final, Dimarco cemented himself as a firm starter on the back of his breakthrough season with I Nerazzurri, making 33 Serie A appearances and recording an average match rating of 7.17, via Sofascore.

Hailed as a “beast” by one Serie A expert on Twitter, the 25-year-old could elevate the performance level at United, in a move that could prove to be bad news for Luke Shaw.

While the Englishman has performed highly under Ten Hag towards the end of the season, displaying skills in playing at centre-back when called upon, the 27-year-old could be forced to lose his position at left-back to the expertise of Dimarco.

This season’s top two managers in the Premier League have found success in deploying their full-backs in an inverted role, allowing for increased impact offensively while maintaining defensive stability.

Ten Hag could replicate the influence Pep Guardiola has passed to Mikel Arteta in playing Dimarco over Shaw, whose statistics prove him to be one of the best attacking full-backs in Europe.

As per FBref, the Italian leapfrogs Shaw in terms of attacking play on the flank, ranking in the top 1% of full-backs in Europe with reference to total shots, averaging an impressive two per 90 to the Englishman’s 0.41, showing his impact in the final third.

A similar pattern is evident in his overlapping play, receiving 7.98 progressive passes per 90 to the United ace’s 3.03 to further communicate the threat he could add in wide areas to Ten Hag’s side from defence.

The two have similar averages in defensive duties, with Sofascore revealing that both players won an average of 56% of their total duels, with Shaw coming out marginally on top making 1.91 tackles per 90 to the Inter gem’s 1.29.

The league has seen this season just how potent it can be having full-backs with competency in the final third, adding a new dimension to gameplay in an area that could bolster Ten Hag’s chances to take United back to the top. It may well relegate their current option at left-back, but United's manager it would surely be worth it.

Leeds Could Sign Big Bamford Upgrade In ‘Unplayable’ £17m Talent

Leeds United have been relegated from the Premier League and are still without a permanent manager with the transfer window in full swing, but that has not stopped the club from pushing for Coventry City's Viktor Gyokeres.

What's the latest on Viktor Gyokeres to Leeds?

According to the Coventry Telegraph (June 19, page 38), via MOT Leeds News, an exit is on the cards for the Sky Blues star talisman, and while suitors from all across Europe push for his signature, the likes of Championship promotion contenders Leeds and Middlesbrough are hoping to tempt the ace with a move.

Speaking to the publication, former manager Gary McSheffrey believes it will take 'big money' for a move to a divisional rival to come into fruition, with fees as high as £17m touted for the Swede's services.

He said: “If it’s one of the bigger Championship clubs like a Leeds or a Middlesbrough, unless it’s mega-money for Coventry, then I am not sure it would be the right move for him, although it might be financially good for him.

“I know there’s firm interest and there will be a couple of clubs who have come down that will want him, the likes of Leeds United, who can still afford to pay him good money.”

How good is Viktor Gyokeres?

Given that the 25-year-old only has just one year left on his current deal and no sight of a resolution, it is increasingly likely that he will be sold this summer as the defeated play-off finalists look to rebuild and push for promotion once again.

And with Leeds hoping for an immediate return to the top flight after devastating relegation this year, Gyokeres could be tempted to complete the transfer and spearhead a club back toward prominence.

Over the past two campaigns, the 13-cap international has posted 21 and 17 goal returns in the second tier, illustrating exactly the kind of potency that the Whites require to succeed in their seasonal endeavours.

viktor-gyokeres-premier-league-everton-transfers

He would be an almighty upgrade on Leeds' current centre-forward, Patrick Bamford, who captured the attention of the throngs of supporters with his performances in the Championship when the club secured promotion – scoring 16 times – before playing an exemplary term upon the outfit's return to the Premier League – finishing with 17 strikes in the top-flight.

However, injuries and a fall from form over the past two years have left the former Chelsea youngster in ill regard, being branded as a "liability" by journalist Hunter Walker, and replacing him with the younger, more exuberant Gyokeres would only enhance the squad's prospects.

Said to be "unplayable" on his day by teammate Maxime Biamou, Gyokeres has averaged three shots and 1.8 key passes per match this season, as per Sofascore, whereas Bamford's 1.8 shots and 0.4 key passes illuminate the lack of robustness that stung Leeds in their travails.

Considering this, the 49ers would be wise to secure Gyokeres' signature this summer and wipe the slate clean; relegation materialised and left the club in ignominy, but there is now a stunning opportunity to rectify the past wrongs and the Coventry dynamo is the man to lead the charge.

BCCI has not yet executed Lodha reforms – CoA

The Committee of Administrators has stated in its report that the BCCI and state associations have not adhered to any of the steps they were supposed to implement by the two set of deadlines set by the Lodha Committee

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-2017The Committee of Administrators (CoA) submitted its first status report to the Supreme Court on Saturday, saying the BCCI and the state associations have not yet complied with even one of the steps that had to be implemented to meet the timelines set by the Lodha Committee. The CoA, appointed by the Supreme Court in January, recorded in its report the two sets of timelines set by the Lodha Committee, the status for the same submitted by BCCI CEO Rahul Johri on February 10, and its own observations on the implementation of recommendations. Against each of the 15 steps set for the board, the CoA remarked, “Step not complied with”. The Supreme Court will hear the matter for these on Monday. The state associations have been asked to hold fresh elections, and among them, only Vidarbha, Tripura and Hyderabad have done so. On the status of other recommendations, Johri stated the appointment of an ethics officer and ombudsman could happen only once newly elected members from the state associations take part in a BCCI meeting to form an apex council. Johri stated that the appointment of the ethics officer and the scope of the ombudsman’s role will be an amendment to the BCCI constitution, which needs to be passed by a 3/4th majority resolution. The first set of timelines ranged from September 30, 2016 to October 15, 2016 and included recommendations on the adoption of a new memorandum and rules and regulations by the BCCI, the amendment of constitutions by state associations, amendments to certain IPL codes of conduct, and the implementation of the one-state-one-vote policy to be followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra, which have more than one state association. In the status for these submitted by Johri, the CEO said the new memorandum and rules and regulations were “not implemented” because the “BCCI members in their meeting need to accept this with 3/4th majority as per present rules”. Even though the state associations, barring Tripura and Vidarbha, had not amended their constitutions, Johri stated certain state units had declared they would do so and had communicated directly with the Lodha Committee.Regarding the amendments to IPL rules – including the code of conduct for players and team officials, the anti-corruption code, anti-racism code, and the operational rules – Johri said the amendments were agreed upon during the BCCI’s special general meeting in September last year, but the minutes of the meeting were yet to be approved. Amendments to certain rules in the IPL were also dependent on the appointment of a disciplinary committee by the ethics officer, ombudsman and CEO. Regarding the one-state-one-vote policy, the status merely said “yet to be formulated”, without any explanation. The deadline for each of the above steps was September 30, 2016.The second set of deadlines ranged from November 15 to December 30 and featured recommendations on elections for state associations, elections to the apex council of BCCI, the board’s annual general meeting, and appointments of the ethics officer and ombudsman, creation of IPL governing council and the appointment of the management under the new rules.Johri stated that elections to the apex council and the appointment of the ethics officer and ombudsman could happen only once state bodies had amended their constitutions and held fresh elections, after which elected members would represent their respective state associations in a BCCI meeting to then form the apex council.

Chelsea Keen On Signing Paulo Dybala For Pochettino

Chelsea could make a serious attempt to sign Roma and Argentina attacker Paulo Dybala during the summer transfer window, a new report has claimed.

When does Paulo Dybala's contract expire?

The Argentine has enjoyed a glittering career overall, not necessarily always reaching the heights many have expected of him, but still tasting so much success along the way.

Dybala is a five-time Serie A champion, winning all of those trophies during his time as a Juventus player, and he also famously tasted 2022 World Cup glory with Argentina back in December, scoring a penalty in the shootout victory over France in the final.

The 29-year-old has been a key man for Roma since joining from Juve last year, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists in 22 league starts in 2022/23. Despite that, it could be that he is allowed to move on during the current transfer window, with his current deal running out in 2025, meaning now could be a good time to move him on and receive a healthy fee.

Chelsea are looking for more attacking reinforcements to come in this summer, as they look to forget all about a woeful season and become top-four challengers again, and it could be that they see Dybala as a potential addition before the new Premier League campaign gets underway.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

Are Chelsea signing Paulo Dybala?

According to Sport Mediaset [via Sport Witness], the attacker actually wants to stay put at Roma, but the club aren't necessarily as keen to retain his services moving forward.

A meeting with his agent and the club is "expected in the coming days", with his rumoured €12m (£10.2m) release clause possibly allowing the Blues to snap him up on the cheap. Chelsea's interest in the player is described as "real", and they would be willing to offer him a "much more substantial salary" to the one he is earning at Roma currently.

Dybala could certainly be an eye-catching signing for Chelsea, considering what a world-renowned player he has been for a number of years now, being described by Roma boss Jose Mourinho as his "sensation" recently. He is clearly a class act who has seen it all in the game, but there would still be reservations about him moving to Stamford Bridge.

For starters, he does turn 30 later this year, and with Mauricio Pochettino hopefully looking to build a young team who can excel together for a number of years, he wouldn't represent a long-term signing who is going to go up a gear any time soon. There is also an argument to say that his very best days are already behind him, hence why Juve were willing to sell him to a Serie A rival last year.

On the flip side, Dybala still possesses undeniable quality with his left foot, making things happen in the final third and being able to operate as a No.10 or out wide, and he could help fill the void left by Mason Mount, providing creativity in the middle of the park and providing for what is hopefully a new No.9 that arrives this summer.
