Presenter Wowed After Hearing Toon Links To £60m Star

Newcastle United's potential move for James Maddison has been hailed by presenter Terry Flewers who has suggested this deal would be a real steal for the Toon.

How much is James Maddison worth?

The 2022/23 season will be one Maddison will be looking to forget having been relegated with Leicester City down into the Championship.

However, the England international had a mightily impressive campaign on a personal level as he was able to provide a struggling Leicester with a return of 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League alone (via Transfermarkt).

As a result of his impressive displays at the King Power Stadium, the 26-year-old now looks set to depart over the summer as he looks to play top-flight football.

Although he has been one of the star players at Leicester, his expected exit will provide the Foxes wth an opportunity to bring in some significant funds ahead of their first campaign back in the Championship.

It has even been reported that Leicester could demand a fee in the region of £60m for the midfielder despite them being relegated to the second tier.

Speaking on The Football Terrace, Flewers has claimed even if Newcastle end up paying around £50m for the midfielder, this would be a steal which could dramatically improve their side:

"James Madison, excellent, excellent Premier League player with the way Newcastle are playing and developing, he could be an absolute steal, even at £50 million which is the quoted price.

"I believe that is a steal. He's going to take them up to another level as Newcastle look to not only do well in the Champions League but maintain their position in the top four."

Who could sign James Maddison?

Evidently, Newcastle are seriously interested in the possibility of landing Maddison this summer with reports claiming they currently lead the race.

Newcastle have been linked with the England star previously with last summer seeing their two bids rejected by the Foxes as they fell considerably short of their valuation.

However, they are not the only side to have shown their interest in Maddison already this summer with suggestions Spurs had opened over a potential move.

The Lilywhites are also said to hold a long-standing interest in Maddison but are unable to offer him any form of European football for the upcoming season.

There have even been reports over the last few months claiming the newly-crowned Champions League champions, Manchester City, hold an interest in the 26-year-old.

It will be intriguing to see whether Maddison would be willing to take on the change of living up in the north given reports in the recent past have claimed he would be keen to make a move to London.

But with only Arsenal and West Ham United able to provide European football in the capital, perhaps a move to Tyneside has become a lot more appealing.

Kohli surprised by England's defensive tactics

Virat Kohli on…

India’s first-innings performance: “First innings is quite important in India. In Rajkot too, the general feeling was that England played better cricket than us. But once you put a total on the board, if there is nothing in the wicket, even then you feel pressure of the big runs.
“The more runs you make initially then those runs come handy because you have a bigger target and more overs against the opposition batsmen. So in the start if you can get 100-150 runs extra then you get advantage of that in the second innings for sure.”
Juggling captaincy and being a key batsman: “It’s a difficult thing to detach yourself from being captain when you go out there to bat especially when you are playing five batters. The responsibility obviously increases much more. But it also makes me not hit the ball in the air which I probably prefer in Test cricket. Honestly I don’t feel the need to do that because I believe in my abilities to play on the ground and still score at a healthy rate. So I don’t need to try any fancy things.
“I also feel the more you stay on the wicket, the more time you spend, things start getting easier. That’s the whole plan to actually go out there and see whats happening, understand the bowlers, not necessarily have your plans of attacking bowlers but to understand how the situation is playing out. Stay calm on the wicket, try to spend as much time on the wicket. Instinctive players obviously get runs when they spend time on the wicket. I think I am one of them
It [captaincy] does take a toll on you but right now i am pretty fine. Maybe in three-four years’ time I can analyse how much load I am feeling but at the moment it’s coming along nicely so I am pretty OK with it.”

Virat Kohli has said England’s decision to stonewall in the second innings played into India’s hands after they secured a 246-run victory in Visakhapatnam.Set 405 on a wearing pitch with considerable variation in bounce, Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed dug in for 50.2 overs to put on 75 for the opening stand. It was high-class defensive batting from two batsmen with the technique to pull off such a difficult skill but Kohli felt that, in bowler-friendly conditions, not having the “intent” to score was not the way to go.”We thought they would come out with more intent, to be honest,” Kohli said. “And to see them approach that they had obviously gave us assurance that once we get a couple of wickets, it will crumble pretty quickly because there wasn’t much intent from the batsmen.”India were able to break the opening stand late on the fourth day, an R Ashwin grubber pinning Hameed lbw and then, with what became the final ball of the day, Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Cook.”It was a test of our patience,” Kohli said. “We knew that they are going to try and annoy us by playing like this and hope that we lose that our cool, bowl with different plans and do too many things, which we did not. We maintained a similar field throughout.”It’s just that in the last over, the suggestion came from [Cheteshwar] Pujara that we could try probably a different field, have two more on the leg side and make him really defend well in the last six balls. Put a bit of doubt in his head, and it worked.”He tried to play in front of his pad, not close to the body. That’s it, little margins can give you the game. I think that was a crucial breakthrough we needed and end of day’s play as well, so the new batsman did not get to face any more deliveries. He knew first thing in the morning, four more balls to go in the over and he’s straightaway under pressure. As a batsman, I know that for a fact. It was a pretty crucial dismissal that for us and it really set the tone for us today.”As well as England had played to get to 87 for 2 in 59.2 overs, they lost their remaining eight wickets for only 71 runs and were bundled out 20 minutes after lunch on the fifth day.Kohli himself made 167 in the first innings, when the pitch was at its best to bat on, but topped it up with 81 off 109 balls in the second innings when the ball began to misbehave quite frequently. He credited his success to a conscious decision not to go into a shell.”That was the plan. To have intent. It is only if you have intent that you will be able to play the ball accordingly because you are looking to play with the bat. If you don’t have intent, and you are looking to control the ball, and if it does something, then you are in no position to control it. So the edges fly off and you are not in position.”If you are looking for runs, you defend well because your head is on the ball as well. So that was the idea to get runs as the pitch gets tougher to bat on, show intent and keep getting runs in between, extend the lead so the opposition feels the heat of those 30-40 runs. It is a pretty basic thing to do, to be honest, and if you don’t have intent in the fourth innings, it is tough to play out four and a half sessions.”Cook, for his part, defended England’s tactics saying there were times that players need to adapt and play against their natural way.”We set our stall out pretty clearly that from the start of the innings that we wanted to take it as deep as possible,” he said. “We saw in one game, South Africa played 140-odd overs. If we got to play 150-odd overs then we could have saved the game.”Often in those circumstances, you just say, ‘well I’ll just play and we’ll see where we end up at.’ We made a conscious effort to play that way. Everyone bought into it. It’s not some people’s natural way of playing. But you say, ‘play your natural way and suddenly you’re four down then lower order start digging in and you think, ‘why didn’t we start that right at the beginning of the game’.”So we made a very clear policy. Of course, when it does not work you feel you could have been more positive. Get the men out around the bat. You make a decision as a captain or as a leadership group. Everyone bought into it and we came up a bit short.”

'Bullet-proof' Hatchett lives to tell the tale

Former Sussex seamer Lewis Hatchett has become a motivational speaker, telling the remarkable story of how he overcame a disability to become a professional cricketer

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Nov-2016Former Sussex seamer Lewis Hatchett is forging a new career as a motivational speaker, inspiring others with the remarkable story of how he overcame a disability to become a professional cricketer.Hatchett was born with Poland Syndrome, a rare condition which appears in only one in 100,000 births and which affects one side of the body in different ways. In Hatchett’s case he is missing his right pectoral muscle and the two ribs that would have been behind it, which means his chest is visibly sunken on that part of his body, leaving complications that he has to deal with on a day-to-day basis. His right shoulder muscles overcompensated for the missing pectoral, causing these muscles to be over-used and they become fatigued quickly, resulting in aches, burning sensations and headaches daily along with his right chest offering little protection to his right lung.Although he was advised as a youngster not to play contact sports, Hatchett’s determination helped him to overcome his condition. He spent six years as a professional with Sussex, taking 102 wickets in 53 first-team matches in all competitions, and batting in a bullet-proof vest.He was advised to retire at the end of last season because of a lower-back complaint.Hatchett is still adjusting to life outside the Sussex dressing room but he has kept busy by helping his brother Bradley in a business networking business, works as a personal trainer – a course he took with the help of PCA funding while he was playing – and has also begun a career as a motivational speaker.”The more I have spoken about my condition and my path into the game, the more I have realised how rare this story is,” Hatchett said. “It’s not just relevant to people with disabilities. A lot of the people who have heard me speak don’t have a disability, but tell me that, having heard my story, they realise that they don’t have a reason to complain about things that they think are wrong in their own lives.

“I could accept not being selected for my cricket, but not my body”

“I believe that there are so many messages in my story that are transferable to all aspects of life and I am really enjoying telling it. Each time I speak I get better and the feedback is brilliant.”Hatchett was not always so comfortable in discussing his condition and for a long time he hid it so that it could not be used as an excuse to not select him.”I protected it because I didn’t want to give anyone the chance to use it against me, to not pick me or to drop me. I could accept not being selected for my cricket, but not my body, that wasn’t an option in my eyes,” he said.”I worked incredibly hard to make myself the fittest player in the team so no one could use my body against me. I know I did everything possible to play professional cricket and probably went further than I ever should have.”My family never made it a big deal. I have a younger brother who is fully able-bodied. We competed against each for years and I didn’t see myself as any different for him.”I wasn’t put in cotton wool. I wasn’t protected from anything. As a youngster I knew I wasn’t the best player around, but I knew I could work harder than everyone else I came up against and I’d give myself a chance, which is what I did.”Hatchett’s condition meant that he had to work hard to develop his leading right arm for bowling and catching. The vulnerability of his right chest meant that, if struck, the consequences could have been fatal and so he had a specially-designed vest made out of Kevlar to protect the right side of his chest while batting.”The chest guard was something I had built in my second year of being a pro because I realised that chest guards that you get off the shelf weren’t going to cut the mustard with bowlers bowling up to 90mph,” Hatchett said. “The Kevlar chest guard is literally bulletproof, so when I was batting I could say to bowlers, I’m bulletproof!”

Chelsea Could Sign Outstanding £55m Caicedo Alternative

It is all change at Chelsea, particularly in the centre of the park.

N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are close to departing Stamford Bridge as the club is set for a completely new era under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Blues are very interested in Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, however, Tony Bloom’s £120m asking price is a stumbling block and the deal is likely to drag out across the summer.

A cheaper and more attainable alternative to the Ecuadorian is Everton’s Amadou Onana.

What’s the latest on Amadou Onana to Chelsea?

Last week, Sacha Tovolieri reported that Chelsea could be in the market for Onana who may cost around £55m.

Now, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, reputable journalist Dean Jones has delivered his own thoughts on whether a move could go through, saying: “Onana's an interesting one. Ideally, Everton won't let him go. He's had a great season, but he's very young. He does fit the profile that we're seeing Chelsea go for at the moment.

"He's 21 and he's new to the Premier League. He's making his impact and, as part of that, he'll have huge resale value if he does come through the door. And this is part of Chelsea's new model."

How would Amadou Onana fit in at Chelsea?

After making a £33m move to Goodison Park last summer, the Belgian made 33 Premier League appearances in his debut year in England, averaging 2.2 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, and 1.1 clearances per game in a solid defensive season.

Described as “outstanding” by journalist Connor O'Neill, the six-cap international ranks within the top 26% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for the aforementioned metrics, as well as the highest 7% for aerials won per 90, according to FBref, to underline his dominant presence.

As such, the 6 foot 4 colossus has the potential to form a formidable partnership with Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea.

Since the Argentine’s record-breaking £106.8m move to west London, he has flashes of his wondrous brilliance, particularly with his pinpoint long-range passing and close control. This is demonstrated by his rank within the best 3% for passes attempted and progressive passes per 90.

But, we are yet to see the best of the World Cup winner on a consistent basis as he has often been deployed as a lone pivot, where he has been exposed due to his lack of pace and dynamism.

Enzo Fernandez

In Onana, this ball-winning, athletic titan would therefore be able to take the burden off Enzo and their differing styles of play make for a perfectly curated combination in the middle of the park.

In a deal worth potentially just half of what may be paid for Caicedo, the signing of Onana would be a rarely astute piece of business under the new ownership.

Aston Villa Could Land Magical Premier League Ace For £0

Unai Emery kickstarted Aston Villa's summer transfer business over the weekend with a swoop for Youri Tielemans on a free transfer.

The Belgian will officially join the group at the start of next month, upon the expiry of his contract at Leicester City, to bolster the club's options in the middle of the park.

He could be joined by Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is also set to be a free agent at the end of June. talkSPORT have claimed that Villa have held talks with the former England international over a possible move to be their second addition.

The Villans are also reportedly eyeing up West Ham United ace Manuel Lanzini, who is another Premier League player who is on the verge of being available on a free transfer.

How did Manuel Lanzini perform this season?

The Argentine attacking midfielder only played 19 times in the Premier League and the Europa Conference League combined but produced impressive progressing passing numbers that suggest he could be a bargain signing for Villa.

Over the last 365 days, Lanzini ranks in the top 12% or higher of players in his position in the Men's Next Eight Competitions for shot-creating actions, progressive passes and progressive carries per 90.

West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini.

This means that the West Ham ace has been one of the best midfielders in that group of players at moving his team up the pitch and opening up space to either create a chance or allow one of his teammates to provide the creativity.

The Hammers wizard, who was once hailed as "magical" by West Ham Fan TV co-founder Nicky Hawkins, excels at breaking lines and dribbling past the opposition to make things happen in the final third, suggesting that Lanzini could be an excellent option for Villa when they are trying to break down a low block.

Emery could call upon the 30-year-old in tight matches where his side will need to find ways of progressing the ball up the pitch quickly and effectively, which the Argentine gem is seemingly superb at doing.

Lanzini, who has scored 27 goals in 179 Premier League appearances, is a proven top-flight performer in England and could be a shrewd addition to Villa's squad as they would be getting someone who can hit the ground running and instantly perform.

This is also the case with Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has featured in 235 games in the division throughout his career, and Tielemans, who played 151 times in the league during his time with the Foxes.

Such a dynamic and fluid midfield trio would no doubt boost Emery's ranks next term and to get three hugely experienced Premier League players for £0 would be remarkable business.

Indeed, this has the potential to be a masterclass from Emery if he can get these three deals over the line and, hopefully, the Spaniard will be able to do just that in the coming weeks.

Celtic Could Land Potter Upgrade In 54 Y/o "Kamikaze" Boss

Celtic lost Australian boss Ange Postecoglou earlier this month and majority shareholder Dermot Desmond must now find his replacement ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 57-year-old gaffer completed a move from Parkhead to the Premier League but the Hoops are now quickly identifying candidates to take his place.

It was recently reported that former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter was approached by the club about potentially taking the job but the Englishman is now allegedly out of the race to take on the role.

He is said to be eyeing up another Premier League move after departing Stamford Bridge, following on from his spell in the English top-flight with Brighton, and this has prevented Celtic from being able to tempt him into joining them.

The Daily Record has claimed that Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen, whose style has been described as "kamikaze" by the club's captain, Ulrick Saltnes, is one of the managers on the club's radar this month.

Would Kjetil Knutsen be a good appointment for Celtic?

Desmond could strike gold by appointing the Norwegian tactician as the 54-year-old could be an excellent coach for the club and a better one than Potter would have been.

Former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter.

The Bodo/Glimt tinkerer has enjoyed a terrific spell in his home country and has a proven track record of leading a team to glory domestically, whilst also showing signs of being able to produce results in Europe.

Knutsen has won two titles in the last three seasons in the top-tier of Norwegian football and his team are currently ten points clear at the top of the table with ten wins out of 11 games in 2023, which means that he is on course for a third title in four years if his side can maintain that form.

He also led his men to the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League and won seven out of 11 matches in the competition in the 2021/22 campaign.

Potter, on the other hand, has never won a title outside of the third division of Swedish football and has only finished higher than fifth once in any division since 2013. This means that he would have arrived at Celtic with no experience of winning titles at the top level, something that is surely a requirement for a team who have just won the treble.

The 48-year-old did win five of his seven Champions League matches in charge of Chelsea but has only managed 21 games in European competitions, in comparison to Knutsen's 37.

Taking all of this into consideration, the Bodo/Glimt boss could be an excellent and better alternative to Potter as the attack-minded manager, who plays a 4-3-3 system, boasts a proven track record of winning titles and dominating a league, which is what Celtic will be hoping to carry on doing after back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles under Postecoglou.

Tottenham Will Heavily Pursue Deal For £110k p/w Ace In N17

Tottenham Hotspur have got 'good lines open' and will push to try and sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving James Maddison?

As per Sky Sports, Tottenham are keen on signing Maddison this summer; however, they face fierce competition to land the £110k-a-week ace from Newcastle United.

Due to the fact that Spurs have finally found a new manager in the form of Ange Postecoglou, they could now 'formalise' their interest in Maddison in the coming weeks.

According to the Northern Echo, the prospect of being able to relocate to London would appeal to Maddison, which is something that could give the Lilywhites an advantage in the race for his signature.

Postecoglou is said to value Maddison as a key target this off-season and Spurs have opened preliminary discussions with Leicester City at board level.

90min journalist Graeme Bailey, speaking on the Chasing the Transfer podcast, has indicated that Tottenham may be frontrunners to sign Maddison, stating: "I think Tottenham are in pole position here. As long as Maddison likes Ange Postecoglou and wants to play Ange ball at Tottenham, I make them favourites at this point. They’ll pay more than Newcastle are willing to pay.”

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Tottenham will pull out all the stops to land Maddison this summer.

Jones told FFC: "The fact that he has to move this summer means that other teams are going to obviously be looking at it and could make a move at any moment. Tottenham kind of have to prioritise it because of that, I understand that they've got good lines open to try and make it happen."

Would James Maddison be a good fit for Tottenham Hotspur?

Maddison, who has been hailed as a "magician" embodies the type of flair and intuition that Tottenham were missing during this campaign and would be a very intelligent capture by Postecoglou if he was able to land the England international.

All in, Maddison made 32 appearances in all competitions for Leicester City in 2022/23, registering ten goals and nine assists in total, as per Transfermarkt.

james-maddison-leicester-premier-league-man-united-transfer

Functioning as a midfield technician for the Foxes, Maddison was also able to provide an inventive spark from the middle of the park and successfully carried out 138 short-creating actions in the Premier League, as per FBRef.

WhoScored also note that the Coventry-born playmaker carried a keen goal threat this term and took on an average of 2.8 shots per match in the English top flight.

Interest in his services is likely to be widespread this summer and it will remain to be seen where Maddison chooses to take the next step in his career over the next few months.

Man United In Contact For "Spectacular" Attacker

Manchester United appear to be keeping an eye on PSV Eindhoven attacker Xavi Simons ahead of a potential summer move, according to reports.

What’s the latest Man United transfer news involving Simons?

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of players this summer as the club seemingly look to back Erik ten Hag with a number of new additions.

Two positions that were previously top of Manchester United’s transfer wishlist were midfield and attack. Chelsea’s Mason Mount is seemingly the key midfield target at Old Trafford, with a £40m offer made earlier in the month. That was rejected by those at Stamford Bridge, and the Red Devils improved £50m bid for the England international was also turned down.

In attack, Harry Kane was previously the top attacking priority, however, a transfer for the Spurs star is unlikely. As a result, United have been linked with moves for the likes of Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos, Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani.

A new final third target has emerged in the shape of Simons, though, who appears to be a player in demand over the coming months.

Fabrizio Romano provided an update regarding Simons on Wednesday, where Manchester United were named. The transfer expert said that Paris Saint-Germain have a buy-back clause for the PSV gem worth just €6m, adding that the Red Devils are one of four Premier League sides that have been in contact with PSV, asking to be kept informed about the situation.

“Paris Saint-Germain buy back clause for Xavi Simons is just €6m! It can only be activated in July, from 1 to 31st. The final decision is ONLY up to the player. He’s waiting to hear from PSG.

“Man Utd, Arsenal, Brighton, Spurs, BVB and Leipzig asked to be informed.”

PSV attacker Xavi Simons.

Who is Xavi Simons?

Simons is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play on the wing if required. The 20-year-old, labelled as “spectacular” in the media at the end of 2021, made the move to PSV from PSG last summer.

Since then, the Netherlands international has seen his Transfermarkt valuation increase from €8m to a career-high €30m. He has starred in his native country, contributing to 34 goals in 48 PSV appearances. He appears to be going from strength to strength, with scout Antonio Mango stating that Simons “has the X-factor”:

“Xavi has one of the best Football IQ’s as just 19 which makes him incredibly versatile to play anywhere along the front line. It’s visibly clear that Xavi has the x-factor, technically special blended with.”

Therefore, should he make the move to Old Trafford over the coming months, he would add strength in depth to United's attacking midfield ranks, with Bruno Fernandes the only senior option, while also providing an option out wide.

However, following his incredible rise over the past 12 months, you’d expect that PSG would be willing to activate their buyback clause for a relatively low fee, so a deal could prove tricky for the Red Devils.

MCC moves to limit bat dimensions

The MCC World Cricket Committee has responded to growing concerns about the size of bats by introducing new limits on their dimensions

Sidharth Monga in Mumbai07-Dec-20163:40

Dobell: MCC World Cricket Committee recommendations welcomed

The MCC World Cricket Committee has responded to growing concerns about the size of bats by proposing new limits on their dimensions, in a bid to reduce the number of mis-hits off the edge or the toe of the bat flying over the boundary for sixes. The size of bats has been a constant matter of debate at MCC meetings. In July 2014, the cricket committee had discussed the issue at length, debating the benefit of a greater number of boundaries for television viewers against the fairness of the balance between bat and ball. At that point, the members couldn’t reach consensus, and the law was left as it was. Now, however, the committee believes that enough is enough, and has recommended a new limit of 40 millimetres for the edge of the bat, and 67 millimetres to the spine.”We have talked for the last couple of years about concerns that the committee has had about the size of bats and where the size of bat is going to go in the next five-ten years,” Ricky Ponting, a member of the committee, said. “So we have actually come up with some dimensions that we are comfortable with as a committee.””The time has come to restrict the size of bat edges and the overall width [depth] of bats,” Mike Brearley, chairman of the committee, said. “It was pointed out to us that, in 1905, the width of bats was 16mm and that, by 1980, it had increased to 18mm. It is now an average, in professional cricket, of 35-40mm and sometimes up to 60mm. That shows how fast the change has been.”Ponting said the imbalance between bat and ball had been a concern with the committee for a while. He also said some current batsmen were concerned they might now be limited in their strokeplay, but the overwhelming feeling was a need for the restoration of a balance between bat and ball.”This is being done with consultation with bat manufacturers and also current players,” Ponting said. “The current players were surveyed by FICA, and over 60% of current players were also concerned with where the size of cricket bats were going. What we are really conscious of as well is that we don’t want to take the game back to the ’50s or ’60s, we are just worried about where it was going to go.”So the average player’s bat-edge size is between 38 and 42 millimetres. There are exceptions to it, some guys are using bats with edges in excess of 50 millimetres and that is what we are worried about. We are worried about the real extremes of that, and the numbers that we have come about, we are happy with that.”Compare and contrast: Barry Richards’ bat from 1970, compared to David Warner’s current model•Cricket Australia

The main concern was mis-hits clearing grounds. “When we are talking about changing the size and dimensions of the bat, all we are talking about is the balance between bat and ball and bringing that back,” Ponting said. “We feel that in the last few years that it has actually gone a little bit too far in the favour of batsmen, and it is more about mis-hits going for a six. There are top-edges in the game that might travel over fine leg or deep backward square leg, that doesn’t have to do anything with the size or the shape of the bat. But more so the mis-hits off the toe or the leading edge of the bat, that are quite clearly still covering the boundaries.”One thing we know is we can’t make the grounds bigger, so certainly one of the concerns was the middle of the bat, because of the shape of the bat is increasingly getting bigger and bigger every year.”Ponting reassured the current players. “We haven’t individually spoken – well, I have received a few messages from current players being worried about limiting their equipment,” Ponting said. “We are just trying to make the game fairer. The balance between bat and ball a little bit better. Bat manufacturers will tell you now, even with edges of 40mm maximum and 60mm on the back, that players won’t notice a huge difference. Some of the mis-hits won’t quite go as far but, if you are good enough to hit the ball consistently somewhere near the middle of the bat, with the bats we have got you are going to clear the rope easily.”Players like Dhoni, Pollard, naturally born strong big hitters, they have got nothing to worry about. It is going to affect guys that are not naturally that strong, that have got away with excessively sized bats, if you like. Those players will notice the difference more than anybody else.”
