Chelsea Hold Meeting Over Deal For £51m-Rated Player

Chelsea could be eyeing a fresh striker move this summer, with the club already holding a meeting over a potential deal for Dusan Vlahovic according to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Chelsea Chronicle.

Is Dusan Vlahovic leaving Juventus?

The striker has been prolific for Juventus in Serie A this season, bagging himself ten goals with two assists in just 22 starts for the Italian side. It made him the club's top goalscorer in the league this year and whilst the Turin side struggled – they finished only seventh in the division due to points deductions – it was a personally successful year for the Serbian in that respect.

He was a real threat for his club this year, with his 2.5 shots per game a better rate than any teammate and demonstrating his ability to get in good positions to then fire away at the opposition goalkeeper. His commanding displays upfront led to a WhoScored rating of 6.75 and it means that he was within the top ten best players at Juventus over the course of the season based on that score.

Juventus attacker Dusan Vlahovic.

Now, he could be given the chance to try his luck in England and in the Premier League. That's because according to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport via Chelsea Chronicle, Chelsea have already held a meeting with Juventus representative Giovanni Manna, who is the current Sporting Director with the Turin outfit. The meeting took place in London and the player was discussed in regards to a potential transfer deal. There is no fee mentioned over a potential sale yet but CIES Football Observatory suggest that his value could be around 60 million Euros (or £51m).

How does Vlahovic compare to other strikers?

The Serbian has proven his ability at scoring goals in a weaker Juventus side this campaign and it suggests that he could be a good addition to the Chelsea ranks if he did make the move.

This is further backed up when you consider how the player compares to others in his position across the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues in Europe. His rate of 0.43 non-penalty xG per 90 ranks him within the 72nd percentile, which is well above average and shows how prolific he can be. His Shot-Creating Actions rate of 0.16 actually puts him in the top two percent in that area. It means that he often has efforts at goal and his attempts to create opportunities often lead to his teammates getting involved in the action as well.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has previously labelled Vlahovic as the "Serbian beast," which shows how highly he is regarded and the presence he provides up front. Chelsea then would be getting themselves a very capable attacker if they did sign the rising star.

"Dark Horses" – Leeds Could Make Surprise Appointment

Leeds United are on the lookout for a new manager and Scott Parker is a name that people are 'continuing to link' to the vacancy at Elland Road, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United's hunt for a new manager?

According to Phil Hay, who is a journalist for The Athletic, Parker has been 'internally discussed' at Leeds United in connection with their managerial position.

Writing a piece for the outlet, Hay stated: “Scott Parker has been discussed on the basis he won promotion from the Championship twice before, with Fulham and Bournemouth. Leicester City are another possible destination for him.”

The Telegraph also report that Parker is in contention for the Whites' job; however, Steven Gerrard and Carlos Corberan have also emerged as candidates for the role.

Parker was most recently in charge of Club Brugge, where he was relieved of his duties following just 12 matches in charge, with his last being a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Benfica in the Champions League, as per Sky Sports.

Nevertheless, the 42-year-old has become something of a promotion specialist and led both Fulham and Bournemouth to the English top flight in spells at both respective clubs.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that despite doubts over his long-term suitability as Leeds United's potential new manager, Parker will continue to remain among the leading contenders for the role.

Jones told FFC: "There's some dark horses that have recently been mentioned, like Scott Parker. I think that Leeds would be reticent about Parker because perhaps they saw what he did in the Premier League and wonder whether he's the right long-term name and has enough experience and pedigree, but he's nonetheless a name that people are continuing to link."

Who is the right man to take Leeds United forward?

Realistically, it is difficult to guess who Leeds United chiefs may fancy to take on the challenge of guiding them out of the Sky Bet Championship at the first time of asking, which has prompted a list of candidates from wide-ranging backgrounds that has circulated among the media.

Brendan Rodgers has emerged as a contender for the job and it is believed that he is on the shortlist to take over at Elland Road, as per The Daily Star.

Daniel Farke has also come into the conversation and is among the bookmakers favourites to land the role; however, it is unclear whether he would be genuinely considered by Leeds United, as per The Yorkshire Post.

Whoever Leeds United turn to will have a lot on their plate as they gear their new side up for 2023/24, with much change expected at the Yorkshire outfit on and off the pitch.

"Superb" 21-y/o Could Stay At Everton Despite Transfer Interest

Everton stand a good chance of keeping midfield powerhouse Amadou Onana beyond the summer transfer window, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

What's going on with Onana and Everton?

The midfielder has had an impressive first campaign in English football since joining from Lille last year, and earlier this season had attracted transfer interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

The 21-year-old helped Everton survive the threat of relegation, and although there may be fears that he could depart this summer, the Toffees may be able to keep hold of one of their star players.

Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano claimed that Chelsea's pursuit of Manuel Ugarte is their priority, meaning any current move for Onana is unlikely, and that Everton stand a good chance of keeping the Belgian.

"I think Everton have a chance to keep the player, it's not going to be easy, but they have a chance because he really loves the club," he stated.

"He loves the atmosphere, the city, his teammates. So he has a special connection with the club. And also at the moment, while we're speaking there is nothing advanced.

"I saw new rumours about Chelsea in the last 24/48 hours, but I'm told that Chelsea are busy with Ugarte, this midfielder from Sporting, so they have not made Onana a priority.

"This is positive news for Everton. Also, let's see what's going to happen in the coming months, because maybe in July or August, some big club will arrive with big money on Onana, but at the moment the situation is quiet and the player is not desperate to leave."

How important is Onana to Everton?

The midfielder has provided a strong presence in the middle of the park for Everton and was described as "superb" following a player-of-the-match display in his side's victory over Arsenal.

Everton won just eight league games all season, and Onana started in seven of them, highlighting just how crucial he is to Sean Dyche's side, who struggled to find victory without him in the team.

The Toffees will be hoping to avoid another season where they are involved in a tense relegation battle, and building around younger talents like Onana could help them to start progressing up the table.

If a big bid does arrive for Onana, then the club may have to consider a sale, but they will be wary of the potential consequences of losing such an important player ahead of what could be another difficult campaign.

Shahid three-for helps Dhaka retain top spot

Three-wicket hauls from Tymal Mills and Mohammad Nabi were not enough for hosts Chittagong Kings to halt Dhaka Dynamites

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Nov-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMohammad Shahid took three wickets in nine balls•BCBFast bowler Mohammad Shahid claimed 3 for 23 to help Dhaka Dynamites defend 148 against hosts Chittagong Vikings and secure their third consecutive victory in BPL 2016-17. The result meant Dhaka stayed on top of the table with eight points from five matches.Having been sent in, Dhaka got off to a blistering start thanks to Mehedi Maruf, who hit 33 off 20 balls, including six fours and one six. In the process, Maruf went past Shahriar Nafees as the top-scorer in this season’s BPL. His knock ended when he was pinned lbw by offspinning allrounder Mohammad Nabi in the fifth over.Tymal Mills, the fast bowler from England, then removed Nasir Hossain and Kumar Sangakkara in the tenth over to reduce Dhaka to 73 for 3. This came after a dramatic ninth over by left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib . Nasir survived a caught-behind chance off the second ball of the over, despite getting an inside edge, which ricocheted off the thigh pad to Anamul Haque, the wicketkeeper. Saqlain responded by stopping halfway in his bowling stride to disturb Nasir’s concentration, only for the batsman to return the favour the next time he looked to bowl.Mills then bowled Nasir for 20 in the next over. The wicket gave way to a collapse: Dhaka lost 4 for 28 in 3.1 overs. Mosaddek Hossain then gave the innings a boost with the lower order, taking his side to 148. He top-scored with 35 off 26 balls, including two fours and two sixes. Mills and Nabi finished with three wickets each for Chittagong. In reply, Chittagong lost opener Jahurul Islam for 6 in the third over. The other opener – Tamim Iqbal – hung on for 26 off 35 balls before falling to Dwayne Bravo. Anamul and Mahmudul Hasan also reached double-figures, but failed to press on. Shahid then went on to rip through the lower-middle order, collecting three wickets in a space of nine balls. Eventually, the hosts fell 19 runs short of the target.

Levy Hoping To Finalise Tottenham Terms With 4-3-3 Manager

Tottenham Hotspur could reportedly announce Ange Postecoglou as their new manager next week, with Spurs hoping to finalise the terms of a deal following Celtic’s Scottish Cup final on Saturday.

What’s the latest Tottenham manager news?

Postecoglou appears to be the latest front-runner for the north London vacancy as Daniel Levy and co’s search for a new manager goes on after a failed swoop for Feyenoord boss Arne Slot.

Spurs are thought to be readying an approach for the 57-year-old, although the likes of Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, Fulham manager Marco Silva and even free agent Graham Potter have also been named as potential contenders. It does look as if it is pointing towards a move for Postecoglou, though, and a further update has come to light.

The Sun shared news regarding Spurs and Postecoglou on Thursday, claiming the Australian may be announced in north London next week. Celtic are said to be gutted and are thought to be resigned to losing their manager and are already on the search for replacements.

Spurs have kept their distance ahead of the Hoops’ Scottish Cup final but are hoping to agree on the finer details of the deal as soon as that is out of the way, with Postecoglou keen to test himself in the Premier League.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

What sort of manager is Postecoglou?

Postecoglou has been in charge of Celtic since 2021 and has enjoyed great success in Glasgow, and a win on Saturday over Inverness would complete a domestic treble.

In 112 games as manager, Postecoglou has averaged an impressive 2.3 points per game, with his side also scoring for fun at an average of 2.51 goals per 90. Prior to working for Celtic, Postecoglou won 80 of his 161 games in charge of Yokohama F Marinos, once again averaging two goals a game. [Transfermarkt]

He likes to play an attacking 4-3-3 formation and is someone who "seems to get the best out of players" – according to former Australia colleague, Simon Moore. Therefore, you’d expect he could bring an exciting brand of football to north London, something which could benefit the likes of Heung-min Son and Richarlison, two players who actually share the same agency as the manager.

It seems as if there could be further developments over the coming days following Celtic’s cup final, so this will be one to keep an eye on and hopefully, may bring Spurs’ managerial search to an end.

Nicholls wary of Pakistan bowling revival in Hamilton

Henry Nicholls says Pakistan’s seam attack and Yasir Shah’s spin will present New Zealand with “different” challenges in Hamilton, given the conditions there

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Hamilton22-Nov-2016

Henry Nicholls: ‘The nature of Hamilton is that you’re going to be faced with different challenges’•Getty Images

It had been in Hamilton – just under six years ago – that Misbah-ul-Haq’s captaincy had really got off the ground. On a track that had started out with a little pace and carry, Pakistan restricted New Zealand to 275, then put on 367 themselves. With the first innings having ended only just before tea on day three, the match appeared to be heading to a fifth day – even a draw on the cards, perhaps. This would not do for Pakistan’s attack.Spinner Abdur Rehman made the first second-innings incision, removing Tim Macintosh soon after tea. Then, in one session of searing reverse-swing, Wahab Riaz and Umar Gul tore New Zealand apart, tailing balls into pads, roughing batsmen up with short balls, and taking four wickets for a single run at one stage. The quicks shared 6 for 66 between them, and Rehman claimed three for himself, while New Zealand lost 10 wickets for 74 in a 27-over stretch that would go on to define the series. This was Misbah’s first of what is currently 24 Test wins as captain.Pakistan may be missing both Misbah and Rehman on this trip to Hamilton, but the hosts are aware their opposition remains dangerous. Wahab didn’t play in Christchurch, but with the Seddon Park surface generally offering pace and bounce, as well as reverse swing, he may feature in the XI. Yasir Shah was muted in Christchurch, but will perhaps find the warmer climes of the North Island more to his liking.New Zealand batsman Henry Nicholls said that even a victory as comprehensive as theirs in Christchurch, may not necessarily breed another here.”I managed to spend a little bit of time in the middle in Christchurch, but the nature of Hamilton is that you’re going to be faced with different challenges – especially with their strong seam attack,” he said. “Yasir’s also one of the best spinners in the world, so when you’re playing these top teams you’re always being challenged. I don’t think you’re ever quite dominating them or anything like that.”Rare is the series in which Yasir does not make an impact, and it is he who has produced the definitive bowling performances in Pakistan’s away tours over the past two years – in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and England.”It wasn’t long ago Yasir was the No. 1 bowler in the world,” Nicholls said. “I’m sure Pakistan will be hoping he’ll bowl a few overs and be threatening. We even saw in the second innings at Hagley [Oval] that he got a bit more turn and was a real threat.”For Yasir to come into the game, however, Pakistan’s batsmen will need to muster more runs than they had managed in Christchurch. Their preparation for the tour had been hampered when their sole practice encounter had been washed out in Nelson, but they have now had a taste for New Zealand conditions in their Christchurch outing.”The nature of when you play in different conditions is that the more you play in them, you hope to get better,” Nicholls said. “We’re expecting them to be at the top of their game. And it’ll be the same for us – we’ll be looking to improve on our performance from Hagley as well.”

Chelsea Can Sign Dream Onana Alternative In £18m Star

It is becoming increasingly apparent that new Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino is in the market for a new goalkeeper, with the Blues seemingly being linked with a new option every day.

Following links with Illan Meslier and Andre Onana already this week, Juventus 'keeper Wojciech Szczesny has now emerged as a possible target for the Premier League side.

What is the latest with Wojciech Szczesny's Juventus future?

According to Caught Offside, Chelsea are exploring a deal to bring Szczesny back to the Premier League, six years on from his Arsenal departure.

It is claimed that Juve, who missed out on a place in next season's Champions League, would be willing to accept an offer of between €15m-€20m (£13m-£18m) this summer.

Szczesny, who has two years left to run on his deal at the Allianz Stadium, is also said to be a target for ambitious Saudi Arabian clubs, who could easily match that valuation.

Is Wojciech Szczesny a better option than Andre Onana?

As pointed out in that aforementioned report, Onana is still considered Chelsea's number-one target, but the West London side would consider going for Szczesny if it becomes clear Inter Milan are unwilling to sell.

Onana is coming off the back of a hugely impressive season in which he kept the most clean sheets (eight) and made the most saves (47) of any goalkeeper in Inter's Champions League run, which ended with a 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday.

The former Cameroon international is strong in a number of areas, but so too is Szczesny, who may be six years older than Onana but boasts more experience – including in the Premier League.

Szczesny made 132 appearances for Arsenal in the competition between 2010 and 2015, at which point he moved to Roma and then to Serie A rivals Juve.

On the basis of the pure stats alone, Szczesny can still more than do a job as Chelsea's number one, having kept a clean sheet in 44.7% of his Juventus appearances over the past 12 months.

Inter's Andre Onana

That ranks the Poland international in the top 6% of his positional peers across Europe's top five leagues and is far superior to that of Kepa Arrizabalaga (32.4%) and Edouard Mendy (10%), the men he will effectively be replacing at Stamford Bridge. Onana, if you were wondering, has kept a clean sheet in 43.2% of matches.

Goalkeepers cannot be judged on clean sheets alone – defenders play just as big a part in that metric – but Szczesny ranks well in other areas, namely arguably the most important one: Shot stopping.

The "world-class" Pole – as dubbed by reporter Sam Street – saved 75.3% of the shots he faced in Serie A last season, which is second only to Lazio's Ivan Provedel (77.3%) and superior to that of Onana (73.5%). In that same metric in the Premier League last season, Kepa saved 73.3% of shots faced; Mendy 64.1%.

After ousting the legendary figure of Gianluigi Buffon to become Juve's number one and keeping hold of the shirt for the past five seasons, there is no sign of Szczesny wanting to wind down his career by moving to the Middle East.

"Being at Juventus makes me happy and motivated," Szczesny said on his future in April, with talk that he could be on his way.

But if those reports are to be believed, the feeling is not mutual and Juve will look to cash in this summer. Should that be the case, Chelsea would be wise to at least consider matching the Bianconeri's valuation.

Tottenham: Spurs Look To Sign "World’s Best" Goalkeeper

Tottenham Hotspur are looking at signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan as a possible alternative to Brentford's David Raya, according to reports.

Which goalkeepers could Spurs sign this summer?

Long-serving Spurs shot-stopper and France number one, Hugo Lloris, could be nearing a departure from north London after over a decade at the club.

The 36-year-old has gone on to make nearly 450 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, captaining them for a significant period, but his recent interview with Nice-Matin indicates a Spurs exit is around the corner.

"We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It's the end of an era," said Lloris.

"I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible. But I don't forget that I still have a year of contract with Tottenham and that in football it is always difficult to predict what will happen."

Spurs have been targeting keepers step into Lloris' shoes, with the likes of Jordan Pickford (Everton) and Croatia nunber one Dominik Livakovic attracting interest from chairman Daniel Levy.

However, perhaps the most prevalent among these links is Brentford's Raya, with some reports even suggesting that terms have already been agreed with the Spaniard.

It appears the Bees star is a firm target for Tottenham, as also backed by The Athletic, but they also say that Milan's Maignan is a wanted man in N17.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The Frenchman, who helped his side to a Champions League semi-final last season and title win the campaign before, is apparently a target for Spurs as they hunt for new keepers.

While Raya is firmly on the agenda, according to this report, Spurs continue to weigh other options as a deal for the 27-year-old proves more complicated.

As a result, while Tottenham have set their sights on Raya, they are also "looking at other options" with Maignan being one of them.

However, he would cost "far more" than Brentford's shot-stopper, and it's clear to see why.

Who is Mike Maignan?

The 27-year-old is a mainstay for Milan and key player, starting every league game for them last season until his calf injury midway through 2022/2023.

Maignan has been revered by sections of the Italian press, like Carlo Garganese, who even called him the "world's best" goalkeeper back in April – after Milan knocked Serie A champions Napoli out of Europe.

France boss Didier Deschamps is also a huge fan, calling him a "great leader" and "great player" after a brilliant Euro 2024 qualifying performance against the Republic of Ireland.

Leeds United Eyeing 40-Year-Old As New Manager

Leeds United reportedly see West Brom boss Carlos Corberan as a possible ideal option to be their next manager moving forward.

Has Corberan been linked with Leeds job?

The 40-year-old has done a hugely impressive job at the Hawthorns during his short spell there to date, having arrived when they were second-bottom of the Championship late last year.

West Brom ended up coming close to finishing in the playoff positions, however, and if Corberan had been in charge a little longer, chances are they would have achieved that goal.

Since Sam Allardyce's exit as Leeds manager was confirmed last week, numerous names have been linked with replacing him in the Elland Road hot seat. Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers have emerged as high-profile options, but Corberan's name has also been thrown into the hat.

The Whites seemingly consider the Spaniard as a strong choice to come in, having seen the job he is doing with the Baggies, but it remains to be seen if he will eventually be the man to be handed the reins.

carlos-corberan-west-brom-leeds-united

Is Corberan really a target?

According to Football Insider, Corberan is indeed "on the shortlist" at Leeds currently, and it is unlikely that they will look to bring in a "traditional figure" in the mould of Allardyce.

Interestingly, the West Brom boss is seen as "ideal" by those high up at the club, should they want to bring in a long-term appointment who can build something special over time.

Leeds are further boosted by a claim in the report that states that Corberan's future with the Baggies is also in doubt "amid a backdrop of financial issues at the club".

It is so important that the Whites get this decision spot on, avoiding the same ludicrous situation they have found themselves in this season, with Jesse Marsch, Javi Garcia and Allardyce all in charge at some point in the campaign.

Corberan may still be a young manager – one who isn't as proven or well-known as the likes of Gerrard and Rodgers – but the progress he has made at West Brom has been bordering on astonishing, and he has even reportedly been inspired by the style of former Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa.

The fact that Corberan has worked at Leeds in the past is also a bonus, having spent three years in charge of the Under-23s between 2017 and 2020, and he will have learned plenty from Bielsa in that time.
