Exclusive: Man Utd urged to replace Andre Onana to 'move forward' as ex-Red Devil believes No. 1 is 'an outfield player who has gone in goal'

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Onana has been a big disappointment for United since his £47m ($63m) move from Inter in 2023, making a number of high profile errors in his first and second seasons. The frequency of his errors has led to suggestions that coach Ruben Amorim would like a different goalkeeper next season and former United defender Paul Parker has urged the Portuguese to make a change.

  • WHAT PARKER SAID

Parker, speaking exclusively to Goal.com via Betsson, the home of odds, said: "I have to say that they do need a new goalkeeper. If they’re going to move forward next season, they need players, fans and everyone to be confident in one of the most important players on the pitch; the goalkeeper. Top sides always have a top goalkeeper that they are assured with, and Onana is not that goalkeeper. I can’t see how he’s going to cover up what he did last season, and I just really don’t believe that he can. If I don’t believe as someone watching, I worry what the players in the team are thinking. If you don’t believe in your goalkeeper and you’ve got that fear factor, it will cost you."

  • Getty

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Onana made two slip ups in the Europa League quarter-final first leg with Lyon, a day after being told by Nemanja Matic that he was "one of the worst goalkeepers in the history of Manchester United". He also made costly mistakes in United's defeats by Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and Wolves and Parker believes his defenders no longer trust him. "I believe they are there [not trusting him] and that is how it went last season – you didn’t know what was going to happen next, what he was going to do."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Parker believes Onana lacks basic goalkeeping qualities and focuses too much on playing out from the back with his feet. He added: "All you want a goalkeeper to do is save the ball. I don’t want a keeper with great feet, and if you’ve got great feet, go be an outfield player. Focus on just stopping as many shots as possible. And if Onana’s saving shots, don’t just throw it back out to people’s feet. I question if he was born a goalkeeper. I think he was an outfield player that has gone in goal. He wasn’t a goalkeeper from day one. The only thing he really hasn’t done, is become a goalkeeper. I don’t care what he did at Ajax or Inter; he’s not good enough to play at Manchester United."

Reyna has already given his green light to a move to Parma, with a personal agreement in place. However, Dortmund are not pleased with the Crociati's first offer. Per the report, the two clubs have entered talks to discuss potential revised terms for the operation and find a solution, with the German side keen on offloading the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.

Reyna was once touted as the next big thing as he followed in the footsteps of fellow American star Christian Pulisic, who also played for Dortmund. In the 2020-21 season, Reyna clocked over 2,000 minutes, but has since been on a downward trajectory. Injuries have played their part, but the player has also failed to produce top quality displays on a consistent basis. He was handed a meagre 12 minutes of action at the recent Club World Cup.

Benjamin Sesko: Why Man Utd are spending up to £74m on the Slovenian speed merchant who Arsenal backed away from

The Red Devils have beaten Newcastle to the signing of the RB Leipzig hitman, who models himself on Erling Haaland and Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Manchester United first set their eyes upon Benjamin Sesko when he was just 16 years old, and even had the chance to snap him up for a pittance. They didn't take it, though, instead leaving Red Bull Salzburg to sign the Slovenian teenager in the summer of 2019 for just €2.5 million.

Meanwhile in 2022, Erik ten Hag's first summer in charge, the Red Devils had another look at Sesko, but again balked at the price, which had by then risen to €24m for a player who had only one season of top-flight football under his belt in the Austrian Bundesliga. Instead, Sesko agreed to jump ship to fellow Red Bull franchise RB Leipzig, although he did not make the move until the following year, which is when United signed Rasmus Hojlund for up to £72m.

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to miss out on a promising and prolific striker once may be regarded as a misfortune, to miss out twice looks like carelessness. But six years after first failing to sign the player once billed as the next Erling Haaland, United have, at the third time of asking, finally secured a deal to get Sesko to Old Trafford.

Having organised a secret trip to Germany, led by head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who brought Sesko to Leipzig when he was the Bundesliga side's technical director, to try and get the deal done, United are now set to pay a huge price for their earlier indecision, with Leipzig having accepted an offer of an initial £66.5m ($89m), plus £7.5m ($10m) in achievable add-ons, for the 22-year-old, who was also being pursued by Newcastle.

Yet, despite the big fee and some concern that United could be about to make the same mistake they made with Hojlund by signing a costly 'project' in favour of a proven Premier League striker like Ollie Watkins, there is a lot of excitement about the striker heading to the red side of Manchester and completing Ruben Amorim's new-look attack…

  • Getty

    Where it all began

Sesko received his early football education in his hometown of Radece and began making waves in Slovenian football when he was barely a teenager, as he scored a stunning 59 goals in 23 matches for second division outfit Krsko's Under-15s side in the 2017-18 season. He subsequently joined two-time national champions NK Domzale, but far bigger clubs came calling just a year later as Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund all expressed their interest. So too did United, who tabled a bid of £1m for the then-16-year-old.

But it was Salzburg, who a year earlier had snapped up another precociously talented and physically imposing striker in Haaland, who appealed the most to Sesko and his representatives.

"The biggest clubs in Europe tried to get him. The interest in him was huge; I have never seen anything like it before," said Sesko's agent Elvis Basanovic at the time. "We had a lot of offers from really big clubs. Had we decided on the money, Benjamin would have moved to England or Italy. But we decided to look at the bigger picture and the Salzburg project."

Unlike Haaland, however, Sesko was considered too young and raw for the Salzburg first team upon arrival, and while the Norwegian was tearing it up in the top-flight and scoring against the likes of Liverpool in the Champions League, the Slovenian was drafted into Salzburg's reserve side, FC Liefering, who play in the Austrian second division. Sesko initially struggled to cope with the jump from youth to senior football and scored only one goal in 15 appearances in his first campaign. However, he got to grips with the level soon enough and netted 21 times in his second season.

  • Getty

    The big break

Sesko became Slovenia's youngest-ever player when he made his debut in June 2021 against North Macedonia, the day after his 18th birthday, and four months later, he became his country's youngest-ever scorer when he struck against Malta. That same year he was promoted to Salzburg's first team for the 2021-22 season, and at the end of the campaign he secured a move to Leipzig, despite only scoring five goals in the Austrian top flight.

He considerably improved on those numbers in his final season at Salzburg, scoring 16 league goals and setting up a further four, and by the time he left Austria for Germany, Sesko had averaged a goal or an assist every two games.

After an underwhelming debut season at Leipzig, Sesko suddenly hit a ruthless vein of form, scoring in each of his side's final seven league games. He also became the youngest player to score in seven consecutive games in the Bundesliga as his goal glut helped fire Leipzig to a fourth-placed finish in the table and a return to the Champions League.

  • How it's going

Sesko's hot streak increased the hype around him ahead of Euro 2024, although he underwhelmed at the tournament, failing to score in any of Slovenia's four games while missing two big chances in the last-16 tie against Portugal, which his side eventually lost on penalties.

Back on the domestic front, highlights of his second season at Leipzig included doubles against Juventus and Augsburg as well as a long-range trivela against Bayern Munich. He also provided an assist as Leipzig beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 to end the then Bundesliga champions' 43-game unbeaten run. The season ended in disappointment, however, as Leipzig finished sixth in the league and failed to qualify for European football for the first time in nine years.

There was some disappointment over Sesko's season too – he scored 13 league goals compared to 14 strikes in his debut campaign despite starting an additional 13 matches. Nonetheless, there was big expectation that he would make a big-money move in the summer, one year after signing a long-term deal with Leipzig which protected his value.

Arsenal were seen as the main candidates to buy him, but instead opted for Viktor Gyokeres, leaving United and Newcastle to battle for his signature. And though the Magpies offered more money than the Red Devils, the lure of playing at Old Trafford was enough to convince Sesko to join Amorim's project at United.

    Biggest strengths

Sesko is an ideal build for a striker, standing at 6'4 (193cm) and boasting huge physical strength. He also has electric pace, famously clocking the same top speed as Kylian Mbappe when he was breaking through at Salzburg.

His pace and power makes him a formidable force running in between the lines and onto through balls, while Sesko also has impressive dribbling ability for a player of his size. The forward's ball-striking ability, which has led to him scoring a large number of long-range goals, also stands out.

"He’s extremely quick, has a great jump on him and is strong in the air. Benjamin is a real goal-scorer, who despite his height, is mobile and technically strong," is how Vivell described Sesko when unveiling him as a new signing for Leipzig. "His abilities make him a special player with a special profile."

‘Loyalty has really gone’ – Alexander Isak urged to continue demanding Liverpool transfer as Michail Antonio tells Newcastle striker to ‘better himself’ with move

Recently released West Ham striker Antonio has expressed his sympathy for Isak, who has requested to leave Newcastle. Amid ongoing interest from Liverpool, the 35-year-old has suggested the Sweden international does not owe the Magpies hierarchy anything and to do the best thing for his career.

    WHAT ANTONIO SAID

He told : "People are gonna love it or gonna hate what I'm gonna say, but I'm gonna say either way. As a player, loyalty in the game has really gone. Obviously, I was at West Ham for 10 years, that [loyalty] doesn't really last anymore, and I feel rightly so, because end of the day, clubs no longer treat players like they used to either. Why should the player be loyal to a club? I understand being loyal to fans, but being loyal to a club when he's going to try and better himself and better his life and try and achieve things that he's not going to achieve at another club."

Antonio added: "We are meat to them. As soon as we start going stale, it's time to sell or throw away. It's all about money, and how much money can they make [for] the club? If a club is going to think about the money side of things, why shouldn't a player?

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has opened the door for an Isak exit but the Carabao Cup holders are hoping to find a replacement for him before entertaining a Liverpool transfer. For Antonio, he said this days after his 10-year spell at West Ham came to an end, with the veteran not getting a contract extension eight months after his horror car crash. Like all elite sport, football can be a ruthless business.

Benjamin Sesko vs Viktor Gyokeres: Man Utd-Arsenal showdown sets early stage for big-money No.9s to show the Premier League what they can offer

The strikers will be the headline acts in Sunday's blockbuster match at Old Trafford but they could easily have ended up at opposite destinations

Cesc Fabregas throwing pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson. Gary Neville scissor-tackling Jose Antonio Reyes. Roy Keane telling Patrick Vieira "I'll see you out there". Peter Schmeichel taking on Ian Wright after having his leg stamped on. It was rarely a dull affair when Manchester United met Arsenal.

But as well as the vitriol, the epic clashes between the clubs in the late 1990s and early 2000s were remembered as meetings of fearsome forwards. And the best moments belonged to Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy, the two leading marksmen who spearheaded the pitched battles between the teams for five seasons.

The rivalry never really truly recovered from their eventual departures and United-Arsenal was eventually overtaken by Manchester City versus Liverpool as the Premier League's biggest fixture.

But this summer both United and Arsenal have broken the bank to land leading strikers and when they meet on Sunday at Old Trafford, all eyes will be on Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko – two lethal centre-forwards who both clubs hope will take them to the next level.

  • Getty/GOAL

    Trading places

The names Gyokeres and Sesko have been the lips of United and Arsenal fans for the last year, as both clubs had kept a keen eye on the two most coveted strikers in Europe. Gyokeres' career finally lifted off under the tutelage of Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, so when the Portuguese coach moved to Old Trafford last November it seemed natural that the new boss would want to take his super-striker with him. But it soon emerged that Gyokeres only wanted a club that would be able to offer him Champions League football, which played to Arsenal's advantage.

The Gunners, though, remained very interested in Sesko. The player’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, was a guest at their final home game of the season against Newcastle and at the end of May reports suggested that they were going to pick him to be their new No.9. The news stories were met with a lot of anger from Arsenal fans online as Gyokeres was felt to be the safer option, a guarantee of goals rather than a project. Those fans needn't have worried as Arsenal eventually agreed to pay Sporting up to £63m ($86m) for the 27-year-old after new sporting director Andrea Berta urged them to change direction and go for the Sweden frontman instead of the Slovenian.

Sesko, meanwhile, was left without the big move to the Premier League that he had been craving. United were still on the lookout for a striker, however, after Chelsea beat them to Liam Delap and Liverpool landed Hugo Ekitike at their expense. They logically turned to Sesko, who they had explored signing in 2019 when he was 16, then again in 2022 and once more last year before eventually signing Joshua Zirkzee.

With Arsenal out of the picture, it was a straight choice between Newcastle United and the Red Devils for Sesko. He immediately opted for the 20-times league winners over the Magpies, rejecting the chance to play Champions League football at St. James' Park.

    The missing piece

United and Arsenal have been crying out for a reliable centre-forward for some time, hence why they both committed so much time and money to their new recruits. A top-level striker, in theory, is the last missing piece for Arsenal after finishing second in the league for three years in a row and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.

Mikel Arteta's side had the best defence in the Premier League last term, conceding just 34 goals compared to champions Liverpool's 41. They were let down by their attack, scoring 69 goals compared to 91 the year before – when they missed out on the title to Manchester City by two points – and 88 in 2022-23.

No Arsenal player managed double figures last season, with Bukayo Saka's long absence after injuring his hamstring in December proving a big factor in their blunt attack. Kai Havertz finished as their top scorer with nine goals, his season ending in February after tearing his hamstring during a warm-weather camp in Dubai. It forced the Gunners to play central midfielder Mikel Merino up front for the remainder of the campaign.

Even without a natural centre-forward, Arsenal rarely struggled to create chances. Converting them was a different matter. Their wastefulness was a big factor in them drawing 14 games last season. In 12 of the 18 matches in which they dropped points, they had a higher expected goals (xG) than their opponents.

  • Getty Images

    Only behind Mbappe

Arsenal have not had a consistent out-and-out striker since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored 22 league goals in back-to-back seasons between 2018 and 2020. It was hoped that Gabriel Jesus could have a similar impact after signing from Manchester City in 2022 but a strong start to his first campaign in north London was derailed by a knee injury at the World Cup and he suffered a similar problem last season. He has scored a total of 18 Premier League goals in his three seasons.

Arsenal could not have signed a more prolific striker than Gyokeres, who scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting. He scored 39 goals in the league, averaging 1.25 strikes per start. That's more goals per start than the entire United squad managed.

He ranked second in the European Golden Shoe rankings, only losing to Kylian Mbappe because the Portuguese league was given a lower weighting than La Liga as it is outside of Europe's top five leagues. The lack of quality beyond the major three sides in Portugal has to be considered, but it is worth stating that no player in Portugal had scored as many goals as Gyokeres since Mario Jardel in 2002.

    Henry: 'The perfect match'

Amorim warned that Gyokeres will have to adapt to a different and more physical league but he is not an English football novice. He joined Brighton when he was 20 but never made the first team. He did have success in the second tier of  English football, though, when being loaned to Coventry City, and after making the move permanent he scored 21 goals in the Championship, leading to him signing for Sporting for a club record €24m (£21m/$28m).

"He already was in England, let's not forget that. He was at Coventry, he couldn't do it at Brighton. So, you can see a guy who already knows what struggling is and comes back from that," said Thierry Henry, Arsenal's all-time top scorer. "He's more confident, and you can see from his body the way he's looked after himself, the way he's changed. You have a guy that's a killer in the box – numbers don't lie – and you have a team that creates a lot of chances, so it should be the perfect match."

While Arsenal see Gyokeres as the missing link between them and a first league title in 22 years or even a first major trophy in six, Sesko has a different remit at United. He has been brought in to help the team rise from the ashes of their lowest league finish, lowest points total and lowest goal count (just 44 strikes) in 51 years.

A lack of goals, however, is not a new problem for the Red Devils. Even when they finished third under Erik ten Hag they only scored 58 times. And they have only scored more than 70 times in one season since Ferguson retired in 2013. No player has scored 20 goals in one campaign since Robin van Persie in that same season. Cristiano Ronaldo has come closest with 18, with Marcus Rashford hitting 17 in two campaigns.

More sixes, and sensational Sixers

The third season of the WBBL broke plenty of run-scoring records, with shots clearing the boundary more frequently than ever before, but work still remains before the tournament realises its full potential

Geoff Lemon and Adam Collins08-Feb-2018It has to be said: the three finals to wrap up WBBL03 were collectively a damp squib. Each game involved one batting side falling to pieces, though at least the Sydney Sixers and the Perth Scorchers made the first innings of their respective semi-finals a spectacle. The games were also a great demonstration of the power of bowling pressure. As we highlighted last week, the atmosphere wasn’t helped by the final being played at a neutral venue, and far too early in the day, to accommodate a reality TV show after the men’s final. There is work to do. Once again, players left the tournament early for international duty. An exclusivity window akin to the IPL has been discussed at Cricket Australia, but talk needs to become actions.None of this detracts from the quality on the field, from the opening weekend in North Sydney when enormous tallies broke every imaginable record. Scoring rates ebbed back as the season went on, but it remained the highest-scoring tournament of its kind. Seven players passed 400 runs, while Ellyse Perry and Elyse Villani passed 500.Or look at the six-hitting: 111 in the first WBBL, 162 in the second, 206 this season. Sophie Devine won the first two seasons with 10 and 13, but even lifting her game this season to 17, she was equalled by Lizelle Lee and comfortably surpassed by Ashleigh Gardner’s 21.Or take another metric: of players who had a bat, the first season saw 43 of them hit at least one six, while 69 of them didn’t. The second season, 48 hit a six and 59 didn’t. This season, 51 hit a six and 56 didn’t. More players are coming to grips with the level and the format. At the bowling crease, veteran seamers Katherine Brunt and Sarah Aley topped the charts with 23 victims apiece, reinforcing that age is no barrier in the shortest form of the game. That the England attack-leader conceded fewer than five runs an over was magnificent.Spin was as effective third time around for the WBBL. South African leggie Dane van Niekerk claimed 20 wickets before leaving the Sixers for international duty, while Amanda Wellington (Adelaide Strikers), Molly Strano (Melbourne Renegades), Stafanie Taylor (Sydney Thunder), Emma King (Melbourne Stars), and Samantha Bates (Thunder) all won matches.Sydney SixersOnce again the standard-bearer from start to end, a brief mid-season stumble was put aside to claim back-to-back pennants. Erin Burns made a seamless move from Hobart Hurricanes in the middle order, while van Niekerk and compatriot seamer Marizanne Kapp (12 wickets at an absurd and league-leading 4.72 runs an over) were the league’s best imports.Aley ploughed on as ever, saving her best for the business end. That was when Sarah Coyte returned to cricket after having retired. Another good news story was Ireland seamer Kim Garth, the only regular pick in the league to have started as an ICC rookie.Perth ScorchersThey recruited big, but fell at the final hurdle again, and in truth were lucky to get that far after an underwhelming home and away campaign. A home semi-final despite finishing third was a massive four-leaf clover. Heavily reliant on leaders Villani and Nicole Bolton at the top of the list and Brunt with the ball, all three stepped up to deliver but too often lacked support.A lasting riddle of this league is why Natalie Sciver can’t find runs the way she has for England in the last couple of years. Heather Graham embodies the team, good enough to win a match with bat or ball, but not enough to bank on. Next season they add Meg Lanning to the the top of their list, but some next-tier players must emerge.Sydney ThunderA funny old season, where the Thunder at times topped the league but never looked more a threat than their Sydney rivals. They were dealt an awful hand in having to play their semi-final in Perth despite finishing second – the hardest road trip in the country. The winning captain from the first WBBL, Alex Blackwell struggled with the bat after finding herself out of national T20 calculations during the Ashes. Her replacement in that team, Rachael Haynes, punished the bowling in a way she hasn’t done before, finishing top five for tournament runs at a great clip. Naomi Stalenberg played some attacking knocks, Nicola Carey had an outstanding all-round campaign, and Samantha Bates was a revelation with her left-arm spin. Stafanie Taylor was down on her usual output, used as a floater in the batting order, and Rachel Priest would have wanted a better first season with the club. Near enough for long enough, but a twist of luck away.Melbourne Stars captain Kristen Beams leads the team out ahead of the start of play•Getty ImagesAdelaide StrikersSo close. The tenacity of this side cannot be questioned, consistently finding a way to defend small totals with a frugal bowling line-up led by Australian swing star Megan Schutt, who at times seemed to be operating the ball by remote control. Amanda Wellington’s massive leggies were always a threat, while Devine was perhaps more influential with ball than bat this season, though we noted her six-hitting exploits above.Suzie Bates was the steady batting presence with her 434 season runs, England’s 50-over opener Tammy Beaumont started to find her way in the format, and Tahlia McGrath was handy with bat and ball. But no one from the Strikers scored at a rate that would frighten a bowling team, and, as Sixers keeper Healy observed on the on-ground commentary mic, the top order panicked in their semi-final collapse.Brisbane HeatTime and again this column was convinced the Heat were hot enough to back up their finals appearance from last season with another. But in reality, any side that comes to rely on one player as much as this team comes unstuck in the end. Beth Mooney was that player, keeping wicket and opening the batting to smash 465 runs at a strike rate of 143.51, the fastest in the league among specialists. Her opening partner Kirby Short was solid but not as influential as previous seasons. One-time West Indies star Deandra Dottin was a faded force. An all-rounder on the fringes of the national team, Delissa Kimmince did her part across the disciplines, but the more established Jess Jonassen has never quite brought the same level to Big Bash as she does in green and gold.South African opener Laura Wolvaardt was a bust in eight appearances, the teenager accustomed to more time in the 50-over form. Up to eight players were required to share the load when bowling, such was the impotence of the attack. Another team with thinking to do.Melbourne RenegadesInconsistency is Red Melbourne’s hallmark, and it got them in the end, after looking finals-bound for much of the season. Recruiters got them a dream batting line-up on paper – the flowering Sophie Molineux teaming up with Sri Lanka’s brutal Chamari Atapattu and the class of former Australia star Jess Cameron (aka Duffin) at the top, with skipper Amy Satterthwaite calling the shots from the middle.Winning a couple of close ones looked like turning an important corner. But the Renegades contrived to lose to the Stars and the Hurricanes, the worst teams of the year, and fell out of the four by the final weekend. It was especially disappointing for the young band on the fringes of Australian selection: Maitlan Brown (15 wickets), Molly Strano (14 wickets) and Molineux (318 runs and 6 wickets) are yet to experience Big Bash finals.Melbourne StarsFor a club that relied entirely on Meg Lanning, there’s not much left when you lose Meg Lanning. A few administrators probably wept in their cars when Australia’s skipper signed for the Scorchers, though she busted her shoulder and wouldn’t have played this tournament anyway. Sciver followed Lanning, though she had always been more promise than delivery to the Stars. But what did they have left? Lizelle Lee was a good pick-up, clobbering 17 sixes in her 349 runs before she had to leave for South African duty. There was the strange recruitment of Georgia Elwiss, a player England used in the recent Ashes as a Test specialist. Annabel Sutherland, daughter of the CA boss, grabbed nine wickets in seven games at 5.48 per over, that rate leaving her fourth in the league for frugality. Not bad when you’re still in high school. Kristen Beams tried hard as skipper but lost the knack of taking wickets. Erin Osborne was a good recruit with a solid all-round season. But there was rarely a sense of threat from the Stars, who didn’t compete for much of the season.Hobart HurricanesIt started badly. Before the season was underway, current England captain Heather Knight became a coach thanks to a busted foot, Satterthwaite swapped purple for red, and key all-rounder Burns followed the glitz of the Sixers and flourished. This exodus was from a club that has never had a current Australian team member don its shirt. The Grapes had punched above their weight in seasons one and two, but finally hit the canvas. Aside from wicketkeeper Georgia Redmayne, who battled hard all season, local players couldn’t reach the standard. Some nominally good imports – West Indies’ Hayley Matthews, England’s Lauren Winfield and India’s Veda Krishnamurthy – barely fired a shot. The Hurricanes need an intervention, and CA has to help get the relatives around the kitchen table. If not, next season could be no better.
