Jude who?! Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai signings helping Liverpool fans forget all about Bellingham blow

The Reds have almost completely overhauled their midfield for the same amount of money it would have taken to sign the England international

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp knew exactly what he would be asked in his first press conference after it had been revealed that the club had pulled out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham. "What you want to know is, as I sit here, am I angry with our owners (Fenway Sports Group) that we can’t do this or that? No I am not. I am not," the German insisted back in April.

"I don’t agree all the time with everything we do, but I am employed here. I am not here to be angry about things that will work out or not work out. The way we did things in the past is the way we will do it in the future, that is the way."

However, while Klopp may not have been angry, the fans were furious. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher spoke for many of his fellow Scousers when he said that "after a year working on a deal, it feels like a timid surrender to step aside and allow Manchester City and Real Madrid to fight it out."

"Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp built a level of trust with regards to transfers which was the envy of Europe," Carragher wrote in . "That trust has gone with news they will not be pursuing Jude Bellingham this summer. Everything pointed to waiting for Bellingham. The supporters were sold the dream that the next Steven Gerrard was Anfield-bound."

He added: "There are times when a club of Liverpool's stature has to flex some muscle and remind their rivals they can and will be there to compete off and on the pitch. To walk away because there is now too much work needed across the whole squad smacks of weakness, negligence and poor planning."

A season wasted waiting for Bellingham

Indeed, what really incensed the supporters was the claim that FSG had ended their interest in Bellingham for financial reasons, as if they had only just realised that Borussia Dortmund would demand a fee in excess of £100 million ($120m) for the most south-after midfielder on the market.

Consequently, their entire pursuit of the 'perfect' signing felt like a complete waste of time, time that really should have been spent reinforcing the midfield last summer, ahead of a campaign in which Klopp's engine room inevitably – but abruptly – ran out of steam.

Liverpool tried to sign Aurelien Tchouameni but ended up with Arthur Melo. Unsurprisingly, they paid a heavy price. The team that had come within two games of a quadruple the season before failed to even finish in the top four of the Premier League, meaning the Reds failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

There was, therefore, an understandable fear among the fans that Liverpool would fail to land any of their top transfer targets this summer.

The signing of the summer so far

However, less than three weeks since the window opened, they have already significantly strengthened their midfield with two excellent additions – and for roughly the same amount of money that Real Madrid paid for Bellingham.

The acquisition of Alexis Mac Allister for just £35m ($44m) is the signing of the summer so far. The Argentine was one of the best players in the Premier League last season, a key cog and the top scorer (10 goals) in a wonderful Brighton team that qualified for Europe for the first time in the club's history.

Even more impressively, he played a pivotal role in his country's World Cup win. Mac Allister was left on the bench for the duration of Argentina's shock 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their tournament-opener, but he started every game thereafter, scoring the vital opening goal in the must-win group-stage clash with Poland and providing the assist for Angel Di Maria's strike in the final win over France.

  • Getty

'Messi was looking for Mac Allister'

What really stood out in Qatar, was Mac Allister's almost total understanding of the game at the age of 24, which enables him to interpret a variety of roles. "It was so special watching him during the World Cup," Brighton attacking midfielder and former Liverpool favourite Adam Lallana told podcast in January. "Not playing to begin with but then him proving himself… and playing so well that there's no way this guy doesn't play!

"Then, by the end, to see (Lionel) Messi looking for him… Messi was looking for him to link, to play! Alexis' role was to almost mirror where Messi was. Whether Messi was deep, he would take high positions. If Messi was high, he would drop. That just shows how much he understands – his football intelligence. Okay, he's not the quickest or the strongest, but he's so smart, like (Luka) Modric. He knows that football is faster than anyone, or anything."

Fellow new signing Dominik Szoboszlai is a little bit quicker than Mac Allister, but they are similar players in the sense that the Hungarian is a multi-talented midfielder of invaluable versatility.

    'As talented as Haaland'

According to Jesse Marsch, Szoboszlai's former boss at both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, "As talent goes, there aren't many better players that can play his position. Some are strong, some are technical, some are good tactically, and some can defend well or run a lot. However, Dominik is special because he has all of these skills combined. Dominik is just as talented as Erling Haaland."

Klopp is clearly keen to avoid such bold statements, and that is wholly understandable. Liverpool may have paid £60m ($76m) for Szoboszlai, but he is still only 22. Then, there's the fact that the last midfielder the Reds signed from Leipzig, Naby Keita, has just left Anfield as arguably the most disappointing signing in the club's history – certainly in terms of hype.

Keita was meant to be perfect for Liverpool, a player capable of doing it all, and yet he ended up doing absolutely nothing. Injury didn't help, but there was also the fact that he wasn't very good.

Klopp's caution is unsurprising, then. "There is no pressure," the manager insisted. "Dominik is still a very young player. He has so much development ahead of him and this means it makes sense for us all to be patient and to give him the time and space to allow his talent to come through within our team."

Former Nottingham Forest striker Surridge has taken on his own MLS challenge in 2023 at Nashville. He lined up against Messi in the final of the inaugural Leagues Cup – with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner netting a stunning goal in that contest before going on to convert his penalty in a successful shootout for Inter Miami.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Surridge may have found himself on the losing side that day, but he has told of gracing the same pitch as all-time great Messi: "It was quite a surreal experience, especially as it was a final. It was something I didn't think would happen, playing against Messi in a final, so yeah, it was a bit crazy. We felt we should have won with our second-half performance and obviously Messi was the one who scored the equaliser. He wasn't really doing much. At one point, he was just standing on the side of the pitch. And then suddenly within a minute, he gets the ball and puts it in the top corner. That's something he does in games that I can perhaps try and learn from. But it was all quite incredible, to be honest. After Messi's arrival, you can see how much Major League Soccer is growing and the World Cup in 2026 is also going to play a huge part.”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Success in the Leagues Cup, which came a matter of weeks after his arrival in the United States, saw Messi make more history as he landed the 44th major honour of his remarkable career. In total, the 36-year-old South American has scored 11 goals through 12 appearances for Inter Miami.

    WHAT THEY SAID

She hinted after a shock defeat to Sweden that she was done, but has agreed to take in one more outing for the USWNT against South Africa on Thursday. Ertz has said of calling it a day, with the next Olympic Games in Paris only 10 months away: “There's always the next opportunity, and your whole career as an athlete, you're like, ‘I don't want to regret anything’. And I think when I get to a point to be able to choose myself, when I could step away… I do feel I could step away and be like, 'It's not because Momma can't play. Momma can play. She has just adapted [her] priorities.' And I think that just comes with age and just I feel like I've been so blessed to have the career that I've had. I think time with my family is just irreplaceable, especially with just where [son] Madden is and his age.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ertz savoured World Cup glory with the U.S. in 2015 when operating as a centre-half, before then moving up into a midfield holding role to help defend that crown four years later. She has been a model of consistency for the States and returned to action in 2023 just eight months after giving birth to son Madden.

Ertz was unable to complete a hat-trick of World Cup wins in Australia and New Zealand and added on what needs to happen in order for the USWNT to restore global dominance: “It's really about how you learn from this. And I know that there was obviously plenty [of] first-timers at the World Cup, and I'm excited to see their comeback. The way to get back on top is you've got to win. So that's a bunch of things. I feel like it's so obvious. I could sit here and be like, well, this and that. At the end of the day, you have to score goals, you have to get them back in the net and you can't make excuses.”

Portugal ratings vs Slovakia: You can always rely on Cristiano Ronaldo! Superstar's double seals Euro 2024 qualification

The Al-Nassr superstar did what he does best on Friday, scoring twice to secure Roberto Martinez's side's place in Germany next summer

Portugal sealed their qualification for Euro 2024 with their 3-2 win over Slovakia on Friday, but they didn't exactly have it all their own way in a thrilling encounter.

Goncalo Ramos scored a header from a superb Bruno Fernandes cross to open the scoring, before Cristiano Ronaldo notched from the penalty spot after a penalty was awarded for handball. Ronaldo should have added his second and his country's third before half-time, but he somehow missed an open goal from six yards out.

Slovakia pulled a goal back with conditions worsening due to heavy rain, as David Hancko's long-range shot was deflected into the bottom corner by Antonio Silva. Ronaldo, though, hit back just three minutes later, tapping in another exceptional Fernandes cross at the back post.

Stanislav Lobotka scored a wonderful goal to reduce the arrears again, sending a dipping, 25-yard effort into the top corner, although Portugal managed to hold out and seal a precious win. The Euros now beckon.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Diogo Costa (5/10):

Beaten all ends up by Hancko's deflected strike and could not get close to Lobotka's unbelievable goal.

    Joao Cancelo (5/10):

Some superb work down the right flank but his end product left something to be desired. Summed that up with a slaloming run ending with a wild effort.

    Ruben Dias (6/10):

A leader at the back, constantly organising. Made some good tackles and was never beaten in the air, although Lobotka's goal came from his position.

    Antonio Silva (6/10):

Stood up well to Slovakia's aerial threat. Unlucky to see his attempted block send Hancko's shot into the bottom corner.

    Diogo Dalot (6/10):

Barely drove up the flank, instead opting to pass as opposed to running. Never beaten down his side, though.

    Midfield

    Joao Palhinha (6/10):

Swept up behind Silva and Fernandes. A composed operator that keeps the midfield ticking. Unfortunate to be booked for a fantastic challenge in midfield. Subbed late on.

    Bernardo Silva (6/10):

Some very clever interplay in midfield. Continually played the ball forward, always having his head up. Subbed late on.

    Bruno Fernandes (7/10):

Superb cross for Ramos' header and added another when assisting Ronaldo's second, and Portugal's third. Somehow missed a header of his own from four yards that would have capped a great performance.

    Attack

    Cristiano Ronaldo (7/10):

Scored his 124th goal for his country from the penalty spot. Somehow missed with the goal gaping on the stroke of half-time but made up for it with his second, tapping in Fernandes' cross.

    Goncalo Ramos (7/10):

Scored an excellent header from Fernandes' cross. Hit the post as well and ran Slovakia ragged at times.

    Rafael Leao (6/10):

His cross won Portugal's penalty. Got down the left flank continually but struggled to create himself a goalscoring chance.

    Subs & Manager

    Joao Felix (6/10):

Replaced Leao. Had a big chance late on but could not quite reach Fernandes' superb cross.

    Ruben Neves (6/10):

    On late on.

    Otavio (6/10):

    Came on with minutes left.

    Diogo Jota (5/10):

Replaced Ramos late on. Should have scored late on but saw two shots well saved by Martin Dubravka.

    Roberto Martinez (6/10):

Not as comfortable as he would have liked, but Martinez got his key selections right, and can now start preparing for the Euros.

Klopp's men were deservedly beaten by the French side, despite a late fightback from the Premier League team, who thought they had equalised right at the end of the game.

With Toulouse leading 3-2 until the dying minutes, 20-year-old defender Jarell Quansah fired into the net to tie things up. Unfortunately for Klopp's side, however, a VAR review showed that the ball had struck Alexis Mac Allister's arm in the build up and it was eventually disallowed, giving Toulouse the three points.

Goodbye Thomas Tuchel! Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the 10 candidates to take over at Bayern Munich next season

Bayern are on the lookout for a new manager after confirming that the ex-Chelsea boss will be leaving in the summer

On Wednesday morning, we got the news we had all been expecting for some time: Thomas Tuchel had been given his marching orders by Bayern Munich. The announcement did come with a twist, though, with the German not set to depart his post until the end of the season.

It's an odd decision, considering that many of Bayern's top players have seemingly lost faith in Tuchel and they have a campaign-defining Champions League last-16 second-leg clash with Lazio to come next month. Perhaps finding someone to take the job mid-season seemed impossible, or maybe the club are looking to save some money by avoiding a hefty compensation package.

Regardless, the search is now firmly underway to find Tuchel's successor and there is a lot of options out there. Below, GOAL has analysed 10 of the top candidates who could end up in Bavaria this summer.

  • Getty Images

    Xabi Alonso

Liverpool will have greeted the news of Tuchel's imminent departure with trepidation. The Reds are understood to have identified Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso as their No.1 target to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

However, with Bayern now on the lookout for a new head coach too, competition for his services is about to ramp up significantly. It's not hard to see why both clubs are so besotted by Alonso. In a short space of time he has overhauled Leverkusen's playing style, making them one of the most watchable teams in Europe, while also getting extremely impressive results.

For now, the Spaniard's focus will very much be on bringing the Bundesliga title to western Germany, but in the summer he has a seismic decision to make. Both the Bayern and Liverpool jobs are appealing, though he could even disappoint both by opting to stay put for the time being.

  • Getty Images

    Zinedine Zidane

Zidane has been out of the game for some time now, having not returned to management since he left Real Madrid in May 2021. There's been plenty of rumours since, with interest coming from Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and the United States, but Zizou has remained on the sidelines.

Could that change this summer now the Bayern job has come up? He would seem to be a pretty good fit at least. Tactically flexible, Zidane's main strength appears to be his squad management. And with Bayern possessing a lot of egos at present, his ability to be a unifying figure who commands respect would be welcomed.

Whether he would be interested in the role is another matter. Zidane holds a burning desire to manage France one day and during a tournament year – after which Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps could feasibly leave – he may prefer to remain a free agent.

  • Getty

    Hansi Flick

Flick's reputation took a battering during his time in charge of Germany. However, it should not be forgotten what an outstanding job he did at Bayern between 2019 and 2021.

Parachuted in to save Die Roten's season following Niko Kovac's disastrous reign, Flick would go on to lead the club to only their second-ever continental treble. His only full campaign wasn't quite as successful, but he still led Bayern to the Bundesliga title – something Tuchel is currently proving is far from the guarantee it is often portrayed as.

The less said about his time as Germany boss the better, but if the club are looking for a safe pair of hands, Flick could be the ideal, short-term choice to provide a bit of stability.

Robert Lewandowski, Lautaro Martinez and Donyell Malen are the heroes of UEFA Champions League FedEx Performance Zone

The star forwards put in impressive displays for their sides in the first legs of the round-of-16

The UEFA Champions League knockout stage is starting to take shape now that all of the first legs of the round-of-16 ties have taken place. Inter and FC Porto have the advantage from the latest round of games, while PSV are tied with Borussia Dortmund and Napoli are all square with Barcelona.

Serie A leaders Inter are flying high and took a narrow advantage from their encounter with Diego Simeone's Atletico de Madrid. FC Porto, too, picked up a slender lead as they snatched a last-gasp winner from their home match against Mikel Arteta's Arsenal.

Things are all square between PSV and Borussia Dortmund, as the Dutch side fought back to earn a vital draw after falling behind on home soil, while Barcelona went ahead in Italy before Napoli managed to snatch a draw later in the second half.

It was an interesting week of matches in Europe's most prestigious competition, but who were the standout performers? With the help of the FedEx Performance Zone, GOAL takes a look at the stars of the UCL last week.

  • Getty Images

Donyell Malen | Borussia Dortmund | 65 points

Back on home soil against the team that sold him to Borussia Dortmund, Donyell Malen made a huge impression against PSV. The forward opened the scoring just 24 minutes into the UEFA Champions League tie in Eindhoven but he did much more than that. No one had more shots in the game than the Oranje star's five attempts, but he had an incredible four on target – no one else forced more than one save in the entire game. He was absolutely pivotal for his team and was unlucky not to have given them a lead when they left Noord-Brabant.

  • Getty

    Robert Lewandowski | Barcelona | 50 points

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski was a huge force for Barcelona in their trip to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday. He gave his team the lead on the hour mark, but he was a massive threat throughout the game. The 35-year-old had four shouts overall – all inside the box – and won four aerial challenges over the field, marking him as a big help to Xavi's team leaving with a 1-1 draw.

  • Getty

    Lautaro Martinez | Inter | 50 points

Inter look devastating in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League. They owe much of that to coach Simeone Inzaghi, but perhaps even more to star striker Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine has grown into an unbelievable figure for the San Siro side and that was on show in their match against a brutal Atletico de Madrid team. He did not get on the scoresheet, but the forward was integral as he had a total of seven shots and fought hard to win the ball as Inter managed a 1-0 win.

    Galeno | FC Porto | 48 points

FC Porto midfielder Galeno has been unbelievable in the UEFA Champions League this season. It was no surprise, then, to see that the late winner in his team's match against Arsenal was scored by the 26-year-old. He had already hit the woodwork in the last-16 tie and with four goals and three assists to his name in the competition before kick-off, he was a man to watch for Arteta's team, yet they could not keep him silent until the end.
