Danny Mills’ latest update should be music to the ears of many Leeds fans

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds United defender Danny Mills relayed information he had been given about the Whites’ upcoming transfer plans.

The ex-England international stated that the Yorkshire outfit will be signing a new centre-back very soon, and that should be music to the ears of many Leeds supporters, some of whom were far from happy on Twitter with the departure of Liam Kitching this week.

What’s been said then?

Mills stated that he expects a new defender to arrive at Elland Road.

“I would definitely expect Leeds to bring in a new centre-back,” he told Football Insider.

“I’m pretty sure the recruitment team is out there looking already and I’m convinced there will be a new signing in the offing fairly soon. That’s what I’ve been told by Leeds.

“Leeds have clearly known for a while that Pontus Jansson was creating one or two issues. This situation hasn’t happened overnight, it’s been going on for some time.

“Leeds have known this was coming and were trying to target a new centre-back.”

Exactly what they need

Many United supporters should be buzzing about these comments from their former player.

There is a huge need for a centre-back in the Whites’ squad as they lack depth in that position – Liam Cooper, Gaetano Berardi and Ben White are the only senior players capable of playing in that role at the moment.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side had a number of injury worries last season, and with Berardi being the joint-most red carded player in the club’s history, there is no guarantee that these players will be fit and available all season.

Luckily Mills has stated that the club are working on bringing in a new centre-half, and during a week where Leeds fans have had plenty to complain about following Pontus Jansson’s exit to Brentford, this may be the best news they could have received.

Mkhitaryan shares throwback photo on Instagram ahead of U19 Euros

[ad_pod ]

The 2019 Under-19 European Championships are just around the corner.

The tournament will be played in Yerevan, Armenia from July 14.

One of the ambassadors of the event is none other than Armenia national team captain and coveted Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The 30-year-old veteran midfielder has taken to

/BzvQWWHI0Pt/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram to promote the tournament with a slick message but also with a brilliant throwback photo.

The snap shows him at the age of just 19, playing for what appears to be the Armenia Under-21 side.

Of course, Mkhitaryan has come a long way since those early beginnings and is now a highly experienced member of the Gunners’ family.

Arriving from Manchester United in January 2018, Mkhitaryan has already played a total of 56 games in all competitions for Arsenal, scoring nine goals and assisting further 13.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t present in arguably the most important match of the 2018/19 season as Arsenal lost the Europa League final against Chelsea.

The Armenian ace was not in the squad travelling to Baku that day.

Crystal Palace fans react as Jason Puncheon scores for the U23s

[ad_pod ]

Jason Puncheon left Crystal Palace following the expiry of his contract last month, so it was something of a surprise development to see him score for the club’s U23 side on Tuesday – naturally Eagles fans were quick to react on Twitter.

The 33-year-old departed Selhurst Park having scored 16 goals and provided a further 22 assists in 169 appearances in all competitions for the south London outfit across two spells, spending the second half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Huddersfield Town.

While Palace’s official Twitter account glossed over the fact that Puncheon was on the score-sheet, their opponents the Corinthian Casuals didn’t and it certainly sparked a reaction from Eagles supporters on the social media platform.

At the time, goalkeeper Stephen Henderson had been the only arrival this summer on a free transfer – Jordan Ayew has since joined him – which has left some of the Selhurst Park faithful frustrated.

They have been linked with a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy in the last week, but given Puncheon has played in more of a central midfield role in recent years rather than out wide, one fan even suggested that they no longer need him if the 33-year-old is still to be involved with the club.

Others were confused about the situation – even though it appears likely he is simply training with them as he searches for a new employer –  while a couple were quick to say that their one-time captain is “one of our own”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Celtic would get "great signing" in Danny Simpson, says Darren Bent

[ad_pod ]

Darren Bent has told Football Insider that he thinks Neil Lennon should sign “consistent” trialist Danny Simpson for his Celtic side.

What’s he said?

The former Derby County striker has spoken of his admiration for Simpson, who has joined the Hoops on a trial period this week, per The Scottish Sun.

“He’s been around the block so he knows the game, he’s a great signing for them because they know what they’re going to get from him,” Bent told Football Insider.

“Every game you’re going to get seven out of ten, solid performer, consistent, knows his job. It’s a very astute signing.”

Simpson joins the Bhoys as they prepare for the Champions League qualification second round tie with Nomme Kalju this week, with the Estonians coming to Parkhead on Wednesday.

Right-back has become a problem position for Lennon, after Jeremy Toljan, Cristian Gamboa and Mikael Lustig all departed this summer.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

An astute bit of business?

If Simpson were to secure a permanent deal at Celtic Park then it could have an impact on the career of Anthony Ralston. The young right-back wasn’t trusted in the Sarajevo games so it doesn’t look like it’ll be his breakthrough year at Parkhead.

That leaves Lennon with no trusted right-sided defenders in his squad and with the Premiership season starting soon a new signing is certainly needed. Kristoffer Ajer has filled in admirably at right-back in the Sarajevo double-header but his long-term future is surely in the centre of the defence.

This leaves Simpson with an opportunity and Bent thinks the 32-year-old can take it. The former Spurs forward described the right-back as a “seven out of ten” performer, and that consistency will surely be music to the ears of the Hoops fans.

Being reliable could be a trait that is of high-value to the Celtic manager this season. Bolingoli-Mbombo has already shown himself to be exciting, if a little rash, on the left-hand side of the defence, and with a lot of young players in the defensive ranks some experience will be necessary.

If Simpson can be as consistent for the club as Bent reckons he is then he would indeed by very a “astute” addition for Celtic and Lennon.

Ligue 1 Transfer Roundup: Monaco eye Onyekuru, Dembele news, Osimhen close to Lille

[ad_pod ]

Yesterday’s Ligue 1 transfer roundup consisted of an update on Neymar, Monaco’s interest in Shkodran Mustafi and Rennes’ talks for Laurent Koscielny. Today’s edition is comprised of Les Monegasques’ eyes on Henry Onyekuru, news on the future of Moussa Dembele and Lille’s pursuit of Victor Osimhen.

Monaco want Onyekuru

Report: According to L’Equipe, Monaco want to take Henry Onyekuru to the Stade Louis II this summer. It is even reported that a deal is close, and the two clubs are said to have agreed a fee of €15m (£13.7m) for the Nigeria international.

Verdict: It is surprising to see Everton close to moving another winger with a lot of potential on after Ademola Lookman was sold to RB Leipzig last week. The 22-year-old scored 16 goals in 44 games on loan at Galatasaray last season and has a career total of 56 in 132 club appearances from the flanks, which is mightily impressive. But the Toffees’ loss is Monaco’s gain, and he would become the second wing signing of the summer following the permanent arrival of Gelson Martins from Atletico Madrid. If the former Anderlecht wide-man can recreate his form from Turkey for the French club, €15m (£13.7m) will represent a bargain.

How likely is the deal? 8/10

Sylvinho adamant Dembele will stay

Report: Lyon manager Sylvinho has confirmed that Moussa Dembele will not be leaving the club this summer. He said, “Moussa Dembele does not move, for us the window is closed. OK? We have a strong squad and a good team.”

Verdict: It was understood previously that Manchester United would be interested in the former Celtic forward if Romelu Lukaku departs during this transfer window, but this is a firm indication that the Red Devils would face a huge fight for the 23-year-old. The former France U21 international only joined Les Gones last year but has impressed for the club by scoring 20 goals in 46 games. It is unlikely that Dembele will spend that long with the club considering his potential to play for a European leading light, but for now, he would be best off staying in France before making another big jump. If he can follow last year up with another good campaign this time around, there will be plenty of opportunities for a move  next summer.

How likely is the deal? 5/10

Osimhen close to Lille

Report: It is understood by footballlive.ng that Victor Osimhen is close to a move to Lille from Charleroi. His representative Ariyo Igbayilola confirmed that himself and his client are in France and “the only thing left is for the boy to put pen to paper.”

Verdict: The Nigeria international has only just signed for current club Charleroi, but it looks like he will be on the move again soon. The former Wolfsburg man enjoyed a lucrative season in front of goal last term as he netted 20 times in 36 games. He is still just 20 years old and therefore is in line with Lille’s transfer policy of bringing in younger players – only one new signing so far this summer is over the age of 25. Osimhen’s arrival will do little to help the club and the fans forget about Nicolas Pepe, whose confirmation as Arsenal’s new winger is imminent, but, in time, he may be able to have a similar impact as the 24-year-old in France.

How likely is the deal? 9/10

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is performing a U-turn with Harry Wilson decision

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Liverpool Echo, Liverpool forward Harry Wilson is undergoing a medical with Bournemouth ahead of a season-long loan deal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Reds only just welcomed the Wales international back to the squad at the start of pre-season after he spent the entirety of last term on loan with Derby, where he shone.

The 22-year-old racked up 16 goals and four assists in the Championship as the Rams just missed out on promotion, losing the playoff final to Aston Villa at Wembley.

Despite that, Wilson’s form looks to have earned him a Premier League loan this time around, and his move to the Cherries looks imminent – it will be a simple loan deal with no obligation or option to buy.

Jurgen Klopp performing a U-turn

As recently as July 30, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s stance on the Reds academy graduate was clear – Wilson would not be leaving on loan again as it would not help his development, and instead, it was time that the youngster settled somewhere.

Just a week later, the former Borussia Dortmund boss seems to have changed his outlook on what’s best for his young attacker in allowing him to travel down to the Vitality Stadium for a medical.

In fairness, a loan move to a club in a higher division will allow the Reds to see just what the former Hull loanee is made of at this level, against some of the best sides in the country.

However, should Wilson flop under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth, then it could potentially damage his stock which is currently fairly high after an excellent campaign last term – it is believed that Liverpool currently value their forward at over £20m.

One thing does seem to be for certain, though – Klopp’s previous stance on Wilson’s future and what’s best for the Welshman has drastically changed.

Liverpool fans react after it is revealed that the Reds turned down Philippe Coutinho

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed by The Telegraph that the Reds turned down the chance to re-sign Philippe Coutinho as part of an £100m package.

The Brazil international left Anfield back in January 2018, moving to Barcelona in a deal worth £142m – Liverpool’s biggest ever sale.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request, allegedly appeared to fake a back injury, and also paid a portion of the transfer fee himself in order to make the move happen, although his dream exit has turned into a nightmare.

The 27-year-old was booed by his own supporters last term and has been put on the market by the Spanish champions as they look to move the 5 foot 8 attacking midfielder on.

Given the way that Coutinho treated Liverpool, it probably makes sense from a moral viewpoint as well as a financial one that the Merseysiders rejected the chance to bring him back to the club.

Let’s see how the Liverpool fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez labelled "absolute disaster" by Gary Neville

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Gary Neville has admitted Manchester United’s signing of Alexis Sanchez has been an “absolute disaster”.

What did he say?

The Chile international arrived in a swap deal from Arsenal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan go in the opposite direction. The former Barcelona star had lit the Premier League alight with his performances at the Emirates, but has failed to reproduce anything remotely similar in a United shirt.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Now, Neville has insisted the time has come for the Red Devils to cut their losses on the 30-year-old and simply move on.

He said: “We talk about Alexis Sanchez going to Italy. I welcomed him coming to the club as he’s a tenacious forward that plays across the line and scores goals. But it’s been a disaster. He has been an absolute disaster. I have no idea what’s happened. There must be two of him. The one that played for Arsenal and Barcelona and then the one that’s turned up in Manchester. They need to get him out of the club.”

A major shock

Wouldn’t it be so perfectly ironic if Sanchez got his reported move to Inter and started banging in the goals again in Italy? The Chilean’s failings at Old Trafford are frankly unfathomable. Yes, his record with injuries has been poor and has no doubt contributed to some of his ineffectiveness, but his transfer to United didn’t see him switch leagues or countries.

Sanchez went from playing for one of English football’s biggest sides to playing for another of English football’s biggest sides. Indeed, perhaps the biggest reason behind his shocking decline is the lack of freedom he has gotten at Old Trafford to play his own style of game.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

At Arsenal, he was the main man. At United, he has simply been one of a number of under-performing players in an under-performing team. The best outcome for all parties would be if the 130-cap star makes his exit this summer.

Arsenal’s David Luiz takes to Instagram to share a motivational message

[ad_pod ]

One of the rather surprising turns of events during this year’s deadline day was definitely David Luiz’s switch from Chelsea to Arsenal.

The 32-year-old centre-back decided to take a trip across London and swap allegiances in a rather interesting last-minute deal.

Luiz spent six-and-a-half seasons at Stamford Bridge across two spells, donning the Blue shirt, after he first arrived in 2011 from Paris Saint-Germain.

But now he is already well adjusted to being one of the Gunners, if his social media activity is anything to go by.

The Brazilian defender took to Instagram to share a motivational message for the fans on Thursday.

He captioned it as “Keep training, keep trying, keep loving your life” which might be a suggestion he is indeed loving his new “family” and enjoying life in north London so far.

The Brazil international will be fighting the likes of Sokratis and Calum Chambers for a spot in Unai Emery’s starting XI, and will be hoping to get the nod against Burnley tomorrow.

As for his Chelsea stint, he played a total of 248 games for the Blues, scoring 18 goals and tallying 12 assists in the process.

Charlton fans react as Adam Matthews is set to be handed a one-year contract

[ad_pod ]

Some Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported by The South London Press that Adam Matthews looks set to be handed a one-year contract by the Addicks.

Matthews, formerly of Celtic and Sunderland, had been training with the south Londoners as they looked to add another option to the right side of their defence following the £2m sale of Anfernee Dijksteel to Middlesbrough in the summer window.

The aforementioned report states that this will be Charlton’s last signing until the winter window opens.

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer also had a look at Tyrone Mears, but has seemingly decided to hand the 27-year-old a one-year deal to provide competition to Chris Solly and Deji Oshilaja.

Matthews was released by Sunderland after the 2018/19 campaign came to an end, in which the Black Cats missed out on promotion having lost the League One playoff final to Charlton – he made 67 appearances for the Wearsiders.

Let’s see how the Charlton fans on Twitter reacted to the news regarding the 14-cap Wales international…
