Gary McAllister is delighted with Rangers capture of George Edmundson

[ad_pod ]

Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has given fans an insight into why the club have signed defender George Edmundson from Oldham Athletic, as reported by The Daily Record.

What’s he said?

Edmundson has become Steven Gerrard’s sixth signing of the summer so far after a reported £700,000 move from the League Two side.

He’ll now be directly competing with first choice defenders Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson this summer, making a massive step up to play in front of 50,000 crowds on a regular basis.

McAllister is delighted with the deal and has revealed what he sees the player providing next season.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

As quoted by The Daily Record, Gerrard’s assistant said:

“We’re very glad to get the deal for George over the line. It’s an area of the team where we feel we need to get some numbers in and he’s a young player that we’ve watched for a while now.

He’s got a bit of composure and he likes to defend his goal. And he’s got experience because he’s played games at Oldham.

He’s chosen Rangers over a number of English clubs so a big positive for us.

George will give us competition which we need because we’re just three weeks away from a Europa League campaign. People have to come in and hit the ground running.”

What opportunities will Edmundson have?

If Rangers again make it to the group stages of the UEFA Europa League and manage to make it through multiple rounds in both domestic cup competitions then Gerrard’s first-team can expect to play almost 60 games next season.

Such a heavy schedule could give Edmundson a great chance to get regular games under his belt, even if he does not usurp Goldson or Katic as the manager’s preferred option in the centre of defence.

Still just 21 years of age, there should be no rush in expecting too much from him too soon, but given McAllister has pointed out he was extensively scouted, the club clearly feel he is already good enough to do a job and that will likely be reward with plenty of minutes on the pitch.

Tottenham fans react positively to Robert Skov speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to El Desmarque, via Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur have contacted Copenhagen to discuss a potential move for Danish attacker Robert Skov in this summer’s transfer window.

Skov was in fine form for his club during the 2018-19 campaign – scoring 32 times and registering 10 assists in 48 appearances in all competitions.

When considering that Skov largely plays as a winger and not a striker, those numbers are incredible at any level of football.

According to El Desmarque, via Sport Witness, Tottenham, alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers, have registered their interest.

And a number of Spurs fans have reacted positively to the news that their club could bring Skov to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

It has been a slow window for Mauricio Pochettino’s side thus far. However, Skov’s arrival would seemingly go down well with the fanbase when considering their reaction on social media.

Greg Stewart could be Steven Gerrard’s third-choice striker

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Rangers’ pre-season preparations continue, with UEFA Europa League qualifiers set to kick off on July 11th.

The club have spent the last ten days or so on a training camp in Portugal, taking the opportunity to prepare in warm weather and bond as a group away from distractions in Glasgow.

Steven Gerrard put his players through their paces on Saturday with a closed door training ground game against English League Two outfit Mansfield, winning 2-0.

As reported by The Daily Record, the game consisted of three 30 minute periods, with different Rangers elevens in each third.

Can anything be gleamed from the teams Gerrard fielded?

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

On the chalkboard

The most curious tactical detail emerging from the fixture is Greg Stewart’s use as a central striker in the second of the three periods.

Stewart’s planned role in the Gers team has to this point been unknown, with the player featuring in a number of attacking positions last term, either on the wings, behind the striker, as a link to midfield or in the centre forward position itself.

The 29-year-old’s best form last term came when leading the line for Kilmarnock, netting eight goals and assisting seven times in half a season at Rugby Park. It was when he made the switch to Pittodrie and played in a variety of supporting positions under Derek McInnes that his direct goal contributions suffered.

It now appears the Gerrard will look to get the best out of him by utilising him in a similar manner to Alfredo Morelos or Jermain Defoe rather than in support of a central goalscorer.

Leeds Transfer Roundup: Anita interest, Halme exit, Leeds after Croatian

[ad_pod ]

Today’s Leeds transfer roundup includes the potential exit of a utility man, one of the club’s younger players being snapped up by a Championship rival and reported interest in a Croatian midfielder.

Anita wanted by Panathinaikos

30-year-old Leeds defender Vurnon Anita is a target for Greek side Panathinaikos according to SDNA. It is also reported that Anita’s contract could be terminated early, which means he would be available on a free transfer.

Halme joins Barnsley

Leeds United have confirmed that defender Aapo Halme has joined Championship rivals Barnsley on a permanent basis. Halme has apparently signed a three-year contract with the Whites’ newly promoted Yorkshire rivals.

Sunjic on radar

The Daily Mail is reporting that Leeds have made a bid for Ivan Sunjic, who is captain of the Croatian U21 national side. Birmingham City have also made an offer to Dinamo Zagreb for the 22-year-old, which is believed to be £3.5m.

What is Ander Herrera’s Manchester United legacy?

[ad_pod ]

This is the fifth instalment in Football FanCast’s Legacies series, which pays tribute to those players and managers who leave a compelling story behind as they move on to pastures new.

Ander Herrera has left Manchester United after five years at the club and joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

While his time at Old Trafford hasn’t been characterised by major collective success, he’s certainly been one of the shining lights through a rocky transitional period in the club’s history.

His commitment has been an outstanding and often redeeming feature in the midst of abject United displays in recent years,

With his departure fresh in mind, Football FanCast analyse his legacy at the club.

An Overview

Following a transfer fiasco that set the tone for a farcical transition into the post-Ferguson era under David Moyes, Herrera finally signed from Athletic Bilbao in 2014.

The midfielder was part of an influx of players – including Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo – who arrived in 2014 as part of Louis van Gaal’s major summer overhaul.

Herrera was one of the few fresh recruits who acclimatised well to his new club. While possessing the technical, aesthetically-appealing and stereotypical attributes of a Spanish midfielder, he also possessed a raw tenacity that naturally endeared him to the fanbase.

The Spaniard lifted his first trophy with Man Utd in the 2015 FA Cup, and quickly added further silverware to his name the season after under Jose Mourinho, where he developed into a more defensive-minded midfielder.

The Community Shield, a Carabao Cup – in which he assisted Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s winner – and a Europa League triumph came next in 2017, rounding off a wonderful year by scooping the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

Things continued to get better for Herrera under the new management of Mourinho as United finished 2nd to their once nonthreatening and noisy neighbours. The Spaniard’s year included some fine moments, one in particular being his semi-final winner against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.

Last season, though, Herrera’s influence dropped significantly and his final campaign saw him bow out in a manner that failed to reflect his boisterous approach to the game.

He did a lap of Old Trafford to thank the fans and spoke on social media of his love for the club before announcing that it was time for him to move on.

Following his departure Herrera appeared to suggest that the Old Trafford hierarchy’s hastiness cost them the opportunity to extent his contract with the club, per Daily Mail.

“I was very happy, I have a lot to thank the club and the fans for it and also Solskjaer.

“He did a lot for me to stay, but things did not happen, they arrived late, and by then I had already made the decision to play in Paris.”

Stat Breakdown

In his five years in Manchester, Herrera has fine-tuned his game and sacrificed aspects of his creative influence in the team to focus on his ball-winning quality, coupling his class and aggression to make a very dynamic midfielder at the base of a three.

A return of six goals and four assists on his maiden Premier League campaign suggested that a forward-thinking midfield talent had arrived, but that was his best return for the club in terms of goal contributions.

He’s managed to register 132 Premier League appearances, averaging just over 26 games a season in the league, proving himself to be a reliable option in the squad.

His goal and assists tally stand at 12 and 17 respectively and, while they aren’t hugely impressive on paper, they’re rather commendable for a holding midfielder.

Herrera’s statistics are incredibly impressive in other areas, though.

The PSG midfielder boasts a tackle success rate of 65%, just 1% shy of N’Golo Kante’s rate – a player widely accepted to be one of, if not the best holding midfielder in the world – and has won a total of 633 duels in the Premier League, making 323 tackles in the process.

Memorable Moments

Having being deployed in a variety of different positions, Herrera found himself playing an old-school man-for-man defensive midfield role in one of his most memorable showings under Mourinho.

United were pitted against Champions-elect Chelsea, who’s talisman Eden Hazard had been in fine form throughout the campaign.

The United boss used his number 21 to man-mark the Belgian throughout the whole 90 minutes, a tactic that was labelled a ‘masterstroke’ by Phil McNulty, BBC Sport’s chief football writer, as the hosts comfortably recorded a 2-0 win against a side who were on course to surpass a 90 point tally.

It was a startlingly transparent yet immaculately executed plot. It was almost so obvious that it shouldn’t have worked. Yet it did.

The Spaniard had many wonderful moments at Old Trafford but, when you consider Hazard’s ethereal quality and Real Madrid’s desire to exchange a fee for his services that could yet rise to £130m, it’s difficult to pinpoint an alternative fixture in which the richness of his repertoire was laid bare to that degree.

What’s his Premier League legacy?

Herrera will be remembered as an absolute fan favourite at United.

Over his time he had no qualms in doing the dirty work, in being aggressive and tenacious, in kissing the badge and by the same token spitting on that belonging to City down the road.

Though the talent perhaps doesn’t match the level of other stars, it’s the commitment and passion that stood him apart from the rest, attributes that fans wish players would embrace more often.

This is his greatest legacy. Herrera’s ability may be replaceable, but his character is not.

Of course he had the talent to go with the determination, but while other United players have been seriously questioned at the end of another mystifying and dismal campaign, Herrera has remained immune to such inquests.

Losing an Old Trafford cult hero this summer is as much a metaphorical blow as it is a physical one.

Legacy: Cult hero

Tottenham deal for Nicolo Zaniolo involving Alderweireld would be a genius transfer move

[ad_pod ]According to Alfredo Pedulla, Tottenham could part with €27m (£24.2m) plus Toby Alderweireld in order to land Italian wonderkid Nicolo Zaniolo.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the north London outfit are seemingly keen to land the 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who scored six goals last season including two strikes in the Champions League.

Zaniolo is a 6 foot 3 powerhouse of a player who also possesses real guile and composure, shown by one goal that he scored last term which highlighted his immense talent.

The report states that Spurs are willing to include Alderweireld in the deal, which seems crazy at first given the fact that the Belgium international is a key player.

Before Tanguy Ndombele, Spurs fans haven’t been able to vlog about a transfer since January 2018! Judging by the video below, it’s been worth the wait…

However, the Champions League finalists may be wary of Alderweireld’s £25m release clause being triggered this summer, so by offering him in a player-plus-cash deal, they would at least be getting something extra in return in Zaniolo.

Player-plus-cash deal is a genius move

If Spurs pull this deal off, it would arguably be the smartest transfer move this summer. It would be a real shrewd move, and would display an extremely sustainable method of business.

Alderweireld, as good as he is, will be 31 next March and his market value and potentially his form too will drop with age.

To swap a player nearing his sell-by date for a gem of a footballer who could become one of the stars of the next generation seems like a no-brainer for Tottenham, and it really should be just that.

Spurs have ample cover at centre-back in the shape of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, whilst Eric Dier can also play there, so losing Alderweireld wouldn’t hurt too much – the arrival of Zaniolo in exchange would also soften the blow significantly.

They would be getting a player a whole decade younger for a relative snip in the modern market, whilst only losing a player who they will have to replace in a few years anyway.

Spurs’ next left-back could be Fulham flyer Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Tottenham Hotspur could complete the £25m signing of Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham next week, per Football Insider.

On the chalkboard

But can he play left-back?

After Danny Rose was left at home as the Spurs squad jetted off for a pre-season tour of Singapore, there is a question over the position next season.

Ben Davies has signed a new contract but one assumes that Sessegnon will be signed to play at full-back if the England international completes a move away.

Per WhoScored, Sessegnon made 28 appearances in the Premier League last term, while Rose made 26 and Davies made 27.

Their sample sizes are similar then, but Sessegnon’s defensive statistics are not exceptional.

He made 0.6 tackles per game, 0.5 interceptions, 0.6 fouls, 1.1 clearances and 0.1 blocks. Rose made 1.9 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, one foul, 0.8 clearances and 0.2 blocks. Davies, by comparison, made 2.1 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.7 fouls, 2.3 clearances and 0.4 blocks.

Although he operated predominantly in offensive capacities last season, Sessegnon is clearly a worse defender than both of Spurs’ current left-backs. He is worse off in tackles, interceptions and blocks. He is better than Rose when it comes to clearances but that may be due to the Spurs star looking to pass instead of hoof the ball.

Perhaps then, he is a better attacker than the Tottenham players?

The stats bear this out, as Sessegnon provided six assists to Rose’s three and Davies’ none. He also has more shots-per-game and scored more goals than the pair – once again, albeit playing further up field. Rose averages the most key passes-per-game, with one, but Sessegnon averages 0.9, a negligible difference, while Sessegnon has similar average dribble numbers.

Rose crosses the ball significantly more than both Davies and the Cottagers man but the attacking stats between the seemingly departing star and the seemingly arriving youngster are strikingly similar.

Coachable

The 5 foot 10 Fulham star will have to be coached if he is to play at full-back.

He will have to make more tackles and he will also be asked to make more interceptions in such a high-pressing team.

Sessegnon is not a diligent defensive presence, as evidenced by his statistics, and is more of a wing-back or a winger.

Indeed, if he is to play under Pochettino, he will have to improve the defensive side of his game.

As it is, both the unremarkable Davies and the seemingly departing Rose are better options.

If Sessegnon is to become the latter’s replacement, he has to improve the defensive side of his game, or else Spurs face a season with very little protection on the left flank.

Arsenal’s summer transfer business can finally kick Henrikh Mkhitaryan into gear

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Amidst all the understandable excitement surrounding the performances of academy products Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock on Sunday, one man whose fine display went slightly under the radar was Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenia international was a real live-wire going forward and showed another tantalising glimpse that the ‘old’ Mkhitaryan is still in there somewhere.

But, with the arrival of Dani Ceballos and potential swoop for Nicolas Pepe, the Gunners’ summer transfer business could be seen as the final nail in the coffin of any hopes of the former Manchester United man becoming a star in north London. Or, could it be a blessing in disguise?

Such has been the incredible difficulties experienced by Alexis Sanchez at Manchester United, that Mkhitaryan’s performances for the Gunners have received far less attention. The attacking midfielder enjoyed a blistering start to life in north London with his performance against Everton in February 2018, but that night arguably still remains his greatest showing in an Arsenal shirt to date – that night accounted for over 20% of his total Premier League assists.

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But against Lyon at the Emirates Cup, the Armenian delivered a timely reminder that he can still be a huge influence for Unai Emery’s side. The 30-year-old’s versatility was on full display as he started out wide before coming into a number ten role. The midfielder was powerful and direct with his running, and always looked to quicken up the tempo with his short incisive passing.

Mkhitaryan’s lacklustre performances last season could in part be put down to the lack of competition he had to face in making the team. The Gunners essentially had Alex Iwobi and the Armenian as their sole wide options, meaning he was largely assured of a place in the first-team squad. But with the return of Reiss Nelson on loan, and Pepe’s reported arrival for £72m, the former Shakhtar Donetsk star is no longer an automatic choice.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

It could quite conceivably lift Mkhitaryan to greater performances in the games where he’s afforded a chance by Emery, knowing full well that he has players itching to take his place. Sometimes even great players can get themselves into a lull and a false sense of security; Arsenal’s summer business may just inspire the £180k-a-week star to impressive heights once again. Let’s not forget he racked up 90 direct goal contributions in 140 games for Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool fans comment as Taiwo Awoniyi leaves the club on loan

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi has joined Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 on loan for the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Nigerian has been with the Reds since 2015 but has not yet made a single appearance for the Premier League club.

Indeed, the 21-year-old was immediately sent on loan to FSV Frankfurt upon his arrival at Anfield, whilst he has also turned out for NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron and Gent on loan during a well-travelled career.

Liverpool are not exactly full of options in the centre-forward position at the moment.

But the decision has been made to send Awoniyi on loan to Mainz, who finished 12th in the Bundesliga last season.

The Merseyside club’s fans have been on social media offering their views on the confirmed exit.

And to be honest, not too many seem bothered that the Nigeria Under-23 international has moved on.

Everton fans fume at Gylfi Sigurdsson following Palace draw

[ad_pod ]

Everton opened their 2019-20 Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

All things considered, it was not a bad result for either side. However, both teams might see it as an opportunity missed at this stage of the campaign.

As expected, the Everton fans were fairly vocal on social media after the match, and Gylfi Sigurdsson has taken a lot of criticism for his performance.

[ad_pod ]

The 29-year-old played 79 minutes of the game before being replaced by Tom Davies after Morgan Schneiderlin picked up a red card following a second bookable offence.

Sigurdsson scored 13 Premier League goals for Marco Silva’s side during the 2018-19 campaign but found it difficult to contribute on Saturday afternoon.

And the Toffees supporters were out in their numbers to criticise the Iceland international for his lacklustre performance on the opening weekend.
