Liverpool: Tanguy Ndombele signing would top Alisson deal on Merseyside

When Liverpool announced the signing of Alisson from Roma, fans knew the club had acquired a superstar.

The then record-transfer for a goalkeeper has been a game changer for the Reds, who head into the final league game of the season with the chance of winning the Premier League and have a second consecutive Champions League final to look forward to, and there is a good debate to be made that Alisson has been the difference maker.

A world-class pair of hands in between the sticks has made Liverpool one of the best teams in the continent, and now it is emerging that Jurgen Klopp could be set to make yet another signing that could top the Alisson one.

According to Euro United, Liverpool have reached a contractual agreement with Lyon over the signing of midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, who has been one of the most sought after players in world football for the past two seasons.

The 22-year-old, who has been likened to Chelsea and France star N’Golo Kante, would be the final piece in Jurgen Klopp’s team should the Reds acquire the midfielder this summer.

His ability to roam as a defensive and box-to-box midfielder, as well as a creative powerhouse, have made him an elusive target for many teams over Europe, and Ndombele joining the likes of Naby Keita and Fabinho in the Liverpool midfield would have as big an impact on the team as Alisson did when the Brazilian joined the club.

Liverpool have the funds and the ambition to complete their squad, and in Ndombele, he would be the final piece in the puzzle.

Liverpool fans, would Ndombele be a bigger signing than Alisson this summer? Let us know!

Watch: Which Sheff Utd players won’t hack it in the EPL?

[ad_pod ]

“Nobody.”

That was the response given by InGood Nick when he was asked if any of the current Sheffield United players would be good enough for the Premier League.

He believes that Chris Basham and George Baldock will struggle on a technical level and that “we could definitely improve in those areas.”

He went on though to claim that “they have proved us wrong every season, they could all prove us wrong again.”

It remains to be seen what Chris Wilder does in the transfer window but he must realise that technically some of his players are going to struggle when pitted against some of the finest players in world football.

However, the dressing room atmosphere at Bramall Lane is excellent, so Wilder must find the right balance of technique and attitude in any of his potential signings.

Manchester United: Mason Greenwood must feature more prominently next year

Manchester United’s season couldn’t have finished any worse than losing at home to a relegated Cardiff City.

Indeed, their worst nightmare came true in front of a disgruntled audience, but one tiny silver lining on the frankly disastrous day was the bright performance from 17-year-old Mason Greenwood.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stayed true to his words and gave Greenwood a full-time debut, making him United’s youngest ever debutant in the Premier League. He might’ve been let down by his senior players, but the teenager was actually impressive. In that team, too, that really is some saying.

He was on the attack right from the get-go, moving in from the right with confidence and always looking to wander into promising positions. The 17-year-old forced a few excellent saves from Neil Etheridge, troubling Cardiff’s defence with his feisty movement and exuberance in the final third.

At least someone did, after all.

While he might’ve been unlucky not to get a goal, he had a day to remember. Greenwood attempted 7 shots, 4 of which were on target. Moreover, he also created 3 chances along with 84% passing accuracy (stats via Fotmob), being more efficient going forward than the lethargic Jesse Lingard or indecisive Marcus Rashford.

The teenager impressed the dejected fans, proving to have a bright future at Old Trafford. Rather than loaning him, Greenwood needs to be kept in the squad. He can definitely create an impact in the UEFA Europa League or other cup games. The 17-year-old could be Solskjaer’s unearthed jewel and the Mancunian to bring him glory.

What Daniel James could learn from Wilfried Bony’s failed transfer from Swansea to Manchester

[ad_pod ]

Daniel James has all but agreed his big transfer from Swansea to Manchester United, Sky Sports understands, as personal terms have already been dealt with.

The young winger is set to follow the footsteps of many more before him and is bound to become another player on the Swans’ departure list for a reported fee of £15m.

The story behind the talk

Sky Sports believe the deal is yet to be fully concluded but it is definitely close. James was Leeds bound in January but that transfer broke down on deadline day.

The 21-year-old forward seems to be keen to leave Swansea behind as his contract comes towards its end with one year left to go. Seeing how that’s the case, the Red Devils will get a discount as the sellers risk losing a big asset for free if they don’t act now.

The same source also claims that a number of other suitors are following the situation closely so the outcome is still pretty much in the air.

Demons of the past

While the general opinion is very much Manchester United oriented and in praise of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s bold and ambitious move, it’s still an easy trap for Swansea and James to fall into.

Sure, the big money move to a Premier League giant is a clear dream for any Championship players but it also isn’t necessarily the right one by default. James doesn’t have to look far back to find clear proof of this being the case as the peculiar case of their ex-star Wilfried Bony.

The Ivorian national was quite a big thing for the Swans but a change of scenery as big as a move to Manchester City pretty much put his development and a bright future on hold. Fast forward a season later and he’s out of the team and cutting through loan deals like a hot knife through butter.

A big transfer can break a career just as easily as it can make one and choosing the right time, as well as the right destination, is key here. Swansea might very well be a selling club and one showing a clear lack of ambition at the moment, but they should also be an option James shouldn’t discard so quickly for the sake of his own development.

West Ham: Nathan Trott’s inclusion in Toulon Tournament is encouraging

Nathan Trott could achieve big things with West Ham United in the future.

The young goalkeeper has been developing rather well in the academy and looks destined to have a bright future, although it remains to be seen if that is with the London Stadium outfit.

However, with the recent developments regarding the 20-year-old, all the signs are suggesting he could be in line for an opportunity within the senior Hammers side in the future.

The club’s official website has announced that he has been selected for England’s 2019 Toulon Tournament that will be played at the beginning of June.

And, being included in that team should be a sign of how highly-rated he is at a national set-up, let alone just at club level.

We all know he is regarded in high esteem at West Ham, as the club only recently rewarded with a new contract and have extended his stay to 2022.

However, there has been transfer talk in recent weeks regarding a new goalkeeper coming in to deputise Lukasz Fabianski. Indeed, Tuttomercatoweb are claiming Bartlomiej Dragowski whilst Football Insider are suggesting Neil Etheridge are both two possibilities for the Hammers this summer.

Admittedly, Trott is probably too young to be considered a back-up for the first-team at this present moment, however, age is nothing but a number when it comes down to things on the football pitch and if he proves himself, it could leave Manuel Pellegrini with an interesting decision to make in the summer.

It is likely a new and experienced shot-stopper will arrive in east London during the transfer window, however, if given the chance to perform and impress for England in the tournament, then demands for his services may go through the roof and the Hammers will be able to loan him out and take a closer look at him in action at a more senior level if they deem it necessary.

West Ham fans, do you think Trott has what it takes to make Pellegrini have a think about him? Let us know your thoughts below!

West Ham eye Shaqiri bid, Liverpool fans react

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to a surprising transfer rumour, as West Ham want to sign Xherdan Shaqiri for £22.5m.

According to The Daily Post, the Irons are eyeing Shaqiri as they prepare themselves for a busy summer.

Under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos, the east-London outfit signed ten new players last summer, and will look to strengthen the squad again this term.

According to the report, the Reds have set a £22.5m asking price on the Swiss international after he fell down the pecking order in the second half of the season, and the Hammers are willing to stump up the cash.

However, many Reds are taking issue with the reports, wondering why the club would cash in on a player who added some much-needed attacking depth this season.

On the one hand, the club would be nearly doubling the £13m they paid for him last summer (BBC), but there is no point building a squad if you take it apart 12 months later.

The Chalkboard: Celtic’s Premier League attitude will ensure standards don’t slip under Lennon

[ad_pod ]

One of the big worries for Celtic supporters in the wake of Neil Lennon’s appointment is standards at the club slipping from the Brendan Rodgers era.

There’s a consensus that the former Hoops boss brought Celtic to a new level on and off the pitch, making improvements to coaching staff, to the training ground at Lennoxtown and to the club’s overall approach to player development.

It’s a worry that has some merit. Lennon may be a successful Celtic manager, but he’s never taken charge of a team in any of Europe’s elite leagues and so it could be argued he is something of a step back for the club.

Celtic fans shouldn’t been too concerned though because the attitude and mentality of this Hoops squad is beyond what anyone in Scotland has seen in a generation and that should smooth transition into the Lennon era.

Keith from C’mon the Hoops throws back to Celtic’s greatest ever No. 7 and “Lord of the Wing” in the video below…

On the chalkboard

Celtic have a core to their squad that is undoubtedly a bonded unit and one that has overcome every domestic test thrown at them for a number of years now.

It’s also a squad that is about as professional as Celtic ever have been, with Rodgers this weekend paying special mention to two of his former charges – Callum McGregor and James Forrest.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the now Leicester manager said of the duo:

“Both boys are focused and they’re top guys off the pitch as well. Callum and James speak well and don’t involve themselves in silly things.

“They lead their lives professionally. They’re not on social media, their only focus is football. They prepare their lives to be footballers. And they both play and train with smiles on their faces. They were a joy to work with at Celtic and it was so refreshing for me, in my time there, having just come out of the Premier League.

“Callum developed his game and plays with incredible personality. He has a wonderful brain for a footballer. But he was another, like James, who is consistent in training and games.

“He’s always had the capacity to play for a big club and deal with the pressure that comes with it.”

It’s players like this, both of whom are in their peak years as footballers, who will ensure that the transition into next season will likely go off without a hitch.

The Rodgers effect

There’s no doubt that losing Rodgers, almost overnight without warning, was a bitter blow to this Celtic squad.

The concerns of that week were massive for followers of the club everywhere. Where would they possibly go next? Was the success of prior seasons about to evaporate?

The players may have lost Rodgers abruptly but what had been instilled into them before he left hasn’t disappeared. Romping to another treble of trophies made that clear.

That elite attitude the former Celtic boss mentions hasn’t and isn’t going to go off with him to Leicester and it’s these attributes that will again contribute massively to Celtic’s quest for trophies next term.

Lennon deserves massive credit for taking the pressure of winning trophies in trying circumstances on his shoulders and delivering what he was tasked to do. He brought the squad over the line when they needed a personality like him most.

His winning mentality, combined with the professionalism of players such as McGregor and Forrest, is what makes the Hoops red hot favourites to rout Scottish football again next season.

Standards don’t slip that easily.

Pereira leaving Leicester for Barcelona would be disastrous

[ad_pod ]

According to Spanish outlet AS, Ricardo Pereira is on Barcelona’s wish list as they eye up a new right-back.

What’s the word?

Pereira has quickly established himself as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, showing impressive strides since switching Porto for Leicester.

However, after just a season in England he could be on the move.

Mundo Deportivo have reported that current Barcelona full-back Nelson Semedo avoided journalists in the mixed zone following Portugal’s win over Switzerland at the Nations League. That came just a day after the same publication claimed he wanted to leave.

With that in mind, the Catalan club have now drawn up a list of potential replacements.

Among those names, according to AS, is Leicester’s Pereira. The report doesn’t specify how much he is likely to leave for, but Transfermarkt rate the player at £18m.

Disaster on the cards for Leicester

After Brendan Rodgers said he wanted to keep his squad intact over the summer this piece of news will be particularly worrying for fans of the Foxes.

He isn’t the first full-back to be linked with La Liga, though, after Ben Chilwell was the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid.

Both of them were excellent over the course of the 2018/19 season but there was arguably no player more important to Leicester than Pereira.

The 25-year-old had a stunning campaign, being named the club’s Player of the Season and also Players’ Player of the Season.

It was fine reward for a term where he claimed six assists, proving to be a valuable asset down the right hand side.

Was Gareth Southgate wrong to overlook potential England stars from Palace, Leicester and Saints? Fan discuss “big club bias” in the video below…

After seeing Danny Simpson released, Leicester now only have one right back in the squad. Daniel Amartey has been utilised in that position in the past but he doesn’t come close to Pereira’s quality.

As a result, losing someone with the attributes he possesses would be nothing short of a disaster. Considering the transfer window has only just opened, it would be the worst possible way to open proceedings.

He’s a player you sense would be incredibly difficult to replace and considering Leicester’s £85m valuation of Harry Maguire, it hardly seems as though they’re strapped for cash.

In that case, allowing him to leave isn’t in their best interests.

The Chalkboard: Fernandes proves West Ham’s decision right

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United’s decision to sell Edimilson Fernandes to Mainz was justified on Sunday as the midfielder struggled during Switzerland’s clash with England in the Nations League.

On the chalkboard

Fernandes, a leggy central player with the ability to play in both attacking and defensive midfield, started the game in central midfield.

Of course, Switzerland were dominated by Gareth Southgate’s side in the third-place play-off, with England clocking 60% possession, though they were unable to make much of it.

They ultimately won on penalties, their second penalty triumph in 12 months after they also defeated Colombia on spot-kicks at the World Cup in Russia, and Fernandes’ struggles were a key part of England’s dominance.

Per WhoScored, he had a 93% pass completion rate from 27 passes but none of them were key passes – suggesting that he merely recycled the ball in midfield by moving it either sideways or backwards – while he also failed to register a shot on goal.

Far from being a box-to-box midfielder, he did not win an aerial duel, he made just one tackle throughout his time on the pitch and he was dispossessed twice.

Not up to Premier League standard

West Ham pocketed £8m from the Bundesliga side for Fernandes’ signature and that looks like a better deal every time you look at it.

He made a total of 48 appearances for the Hammers but he never once stood out as being the future of the club’s midfield.

At the age of 23, he clearly has room to improve, but he was roundly outclassed by England’s midfield of Fabian Delph, Eric Dier and Jesse Lingard.

They are not world-class central midfielders, nor are they really first-choice for their clubs, bar Lingard.

That Fernandes had next to no impact against them suggests that the Hammers were absolutely right to cash in.

Spurs fans thrilled with Sanchez’s display against Messi & Co

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have lavished praise on central defender Davinson Sanchez after Colombia beat Argentina in the Copa America over the weekend.

The centre-back played the 90 minutes against the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria as Carlos Queiroz’s men ran out surprise 2-0 winners.

Second-half goals from Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata ultimately proved decisive in Salvador.

The result was a major setback to Argentina’s hopes of reaching the Copa America final for the third straight tournament, with Sanchez’s side tasting victory over Messi and co for the first time in 12 years.

Paraguay and Qatar make up Group B, while Colombia face the 2022 World Cup hosts on Wednesday.

And Spurs fans were thrilled with defender Sanchez’s performance, as he made four tackles – no player made more – won five aerial duels and produced five clearances, per WhoScored, throughout the 90 minutes.
